Digital Multimedia Broadcasting

In this paper, we propose a PIFA based multiband internal antenna that can support seven frequency bands. The antenna is designed to operate at GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications, 880-980 MHz), PCS (Personal Communication Services, 1880-1990 MHz), UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, 1.9-2.17 GHz), WiBro (2300-2390 MHz), Bluetooth (2.4-2.48 GHz), S-DMB (Satellite-Digital Multimedia Broadcasting, 2.630 ~ 2.655 GHz) and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network, 5.16 ~ 5.5 GHz) frequency bands. Multiple frequency bands have been realized by using slots and quarter-wave length resonating strips. A matching stub and multiple short circuiting strips are utilized for improving impedance matching across the targeted frequency bands. A prototype antenna is fabricated and characterized by measuring return loss and radiation patterns. Comparison of the measured and simulated results is given in the paper.

We present a statistical framework based on Hidden Markov Models(HMMs)for skimming feature films. A chain ofHMMsis used to model subsequent story units:HMMstates represent different visual-concepts, transitions model the temporal dependencies in each story unit, and stochastic observations are given by single shots. The skim is generated as an observation sequence, where, in order to privilege more informative segments for entering the skim, shots are assigned higher probability of observation if endowed with salient features related to specific film genres. Future Video Coding (FVC) is a modern standard in the field of video coding that offers much higher compression efficiency than the HEVC standard. FVC was developed by the Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET), formed through collaboration between the ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG. New tools emerging with the FVC bring in super resolution implementation schemes that are being recommended for Ultra-High-Definition (UHD) video coding in both SDR and HDR images. However, a new flexible block structure is adopted in the FVC standard, which is named quadtree plus binary tree (QTBT) in order to enhance compression efficiency. In this paper, we provide a fast FVC algorithm to achieve better performance and to reduce encoding complexity. We present a multicamera real-time 3D modeling system that aims at enabling new immersive and interactive environments. This system, called Grimage, allows to retrieve in real-time a 3D mesh of the observed scene as well as the associated textures. This information enables a strong visual presence of the user into virtual worlds. The 3D shape information is also used to compute collisions and reaction forces with virtual objects, enforcing the mechanical presence of the user in the virtual world. The innovation is a fully integrated system with both immersive and interactive capabilities. It embeds a parallel version of the EPVH modeling algorithm inside a distributed vision pipeline. It also adopts the hierarchical component approach of the FlowVR middleware to enforce software modularity and enable distributed executions. Systematic lossy error protection (SLEP) is a robust error resilient mechanism based on principles of Wyner-Ziv (WZ) coding for video transmission over error-prone networks. In an SLEP scheme, the video bitstream is separated into two parts: a systematic part consisting of a video sequence transmitted without channel coding, and additional information consisting of a WZ supplementary stream. This paper presents an adaptive SLEP scheme in which the WZ stream is obtained by frequency filtering in the transform domain. Additionally, error resilience varies adaptively depending on the characteristics of compressed video. We show that the proposed SLEP architecture achieves graceful degradation of reconstructed video quality in the presence of increasing transmission errors. This paper addresses methodology and tools applied to the monitoring of accessibility services in digital television at a time when the principles of accessibility and design are being considered in all new audiovisual media communication services. The main objective of this research is to measure the quality and quantity of existing accessibility services offered by digital terrestrial television (DTT). The preliminary results, presented here, offer the development of a prototype for automatic monitoring and a methodology for obtaining quality measurements, along with the conclusions drawn by initial studies carried out in Spain. The recent approval of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities gives special relevance to this research because it provides valuable guidelines to help set the priorities to improve services currently available to users.

Wireless personal area networks (WPANs) are getting popular in a variety of fields such as smart home, office automation, and e-healthcare. In WPANs, most devices are considerably energy constrained, so the communication protocol should be energy efficient. The IEEE 802.15.4 is designed as a standard protocol for low power, low data rate, low complexity, and short range connections in WPANs. The standard supports allocating several numbers of collision-free guarantee time slots (GTSs) within a superframe for some time-critical transmissions. Recently, COPE was proposed as a promising network coding architecture to essentially improve the throughput of wireless networks. The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation technique is one of the key strategies for multiuser signal transmission especially in smart grids and wind farms. This paper introduces an approach for peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction of such signals based on novel global harmony search (NGHS) and partial transmit sequence (PTS) schemes. In PTS technique, the data block to be transmitted is partitioned into disjoint subblocks, which are combined using phase factors to minimize PAPR. The PTS requires an exhaustive search over all combinations of allowed phase factors. Therefore, with respect to the fast implementation and simplicity of NGHS technique, we could achieve significant reduction of PAPR.

A reliable video communication system is proposed based on data partitioning feature of H.264/AVC, used to create a layered stream, and LT codes for erasure protection. The proposed scheme termed rate adaptive selective segment assignment (RASSA) is an adaptive low-complexity solution to varying channel conditions. The comparison of the results of the proposed scheme is also provided for slice-partitioned H.264/AVC data. Simulation results show competitiveness of the proposed scheme compared to optimized unequal and equal error protection solutions. The simulation results also demonstrate that a high visual quality video transmission can be maintained despite the adverse effect of varying channel conditions and the number of decoding failures can be reduced.

This paper proposes the establishment of a simultaneous cognitive radio communication based on a subdistribution of power made over unselected subchannels which were discarded by the primary user through an initial optimal power allotment. The aim of this work is to show the possibility of introducing an opportunistic communication into a licensed transmission where the total power constraint is shared. The analysis of the proposed transmission scheme was performed by considering 128 and 2048 independent subchannels affected byRayleighfading, over 10,000 channel realizations, and three different signal-to-noise ratios (8 , 16 , and 24 ). Digital video broadcast-terrestrial 2 (DVB-T2) is the successor of DVB-T standard that allows a two-dimensional multiplexing of broadcast services in time and frequency domains. It introduces an optional time-frequency slicing (TFS) transmission scheme to increase the flexibility of service multiplexing. Utilizing statistical multiplexing (StatMux) in conjunction with TFS is expected to provide a high performance for the broadcast system in terms of resource utilization and quality of service. In this paper, a model for high-definition video (HDV) traffic is proposed. Then, utilizing the proposed model, the performance of StatMux of HDV broadcast services over DVB-T2 is evaluated. Results of the study show that implementation of StatMux in conjunction with the newly available features in DVB-T2 provides a high performance for the broadcast system.

An algorithm for cooperative Dynamic Spectrum Access in Cognitive Radio networks is presented. The proposed algorithm utilizes Medium Access Control layer mechanisms for message exchange between secondary nodes that operate in license exempt spectrum bands, in order to achieve interference mitigation. A fuzzy logic reasoner is utilized in order to take into account the effect of the coexistence of a large number of users in the interference as well as to cope for uncertainties in the message exchange, caused by the nodes' mobility and the large delays in the updating of the necessary information. The proposed algorithm is applied in Filter Bank Multicarrier, as well as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing systems, and its performance is evaluated through extensive simulations that cover a wide range of typical scenarios. Interference coordination methods for Evolved-Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (E-MBMS) in Long-Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) are presented. In addition, we consider signal space diversity based on Rotation Matrices (RM) known to provide good performance gains over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. OFDM/OFDMA systems can make the use of RM very attractive both for single and multiple antenna transmissions. In this paper, OFDM/OFDMA signals based on LTE parameters are combined with RM, MIMO, Turbo, or LDPC codes. We have considered different types of receivers, namely, we used an MMSE (Minimum Mean Squared Error) equalizer and a Maximum Likelihood Soft Output criterion (MLSO). Frequency, signal, and space diversity gains are evaluated for different spatial channel models (SCM) based on ITU multipath propagation channels. Different adaptive frequency reuse and schedulers are considered to evaluate the E-MBMS spectral efficiency at the cell borders.
