Distribution Maps

The Conspectus of the vascular flora of Bulgaria – fourth revised and enlarged edition – contains information about 4102 species of plants, with distribution maps according to the floristic regions, vertical range of distribution, floristic elements and protection status according to the Biodiversity Act.

The archaeological data available for interpreting and understanding the past are heavily influenced by many factors, some of which are driven by processes beyond our control, but others by the ways in which we think and work. Thus, on the one hand ongoing activities such as farming differentially destroy or preserve earlier remains, in effect controlling what survives and where it survives, while on the other the methods and sensors that archaeologists use to collect data, and their intellectual frameworks, influence what they see and record. The disjunctions caused by these factors, acting both singly and in consort, produce gaps in the evidence, not only distorting our perception of the survival and visibility of the archaeological remains of people’s past activities, but by extension our interpretations. Understanding the nature of these gaps, and whether they are real or imagined, is central to moving from data collection to archaeological interpretations of the past. This paper is in two parts, the first identifying some of the sources of bias inherent in survey data, and the second some of the ways that we might deal with these biases. It presents examples of landscape-scaled analyses of remote sensed data, primarily drawn from the author’s experience of aerial survey in Scotland. These illustrate some of the many issues that arise when trying to establish the  reliability of archaeological distributions.

By plotting out the locations of individual bead finds in the region, analyses were made to determine if there were any specific geographic patterns and/or connections concerning these different finds based on a number of factors. Bead finds analyzed were found to be relatively spread across the whole of the region and warrant further analysis.
