Studies were conducted to determine whether maternal substrate utilization during pregnancy affects fetal growth and predisposes offspring to metabolic disease. Female wild-type (WT) and glucose transporter 4 heterozygous mice (G4+/-, a model of altered peripheral substrate utilization) were fed high-fat diet (HFD, 35.5% fat) or control chow (C, 9.5% fat) for 2 wk before mating, throughout pregnancy and lactation (IU/L). WT HFD females exhibited increased serum nonesterified fatty acid and lactate levels and increased hepatic mRNA expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1-beta and SREBP-1c, consistent with increased lipogenesis. G4+/- HFD females exhibited enhanced lipid clearance, and exposure to HFD did not increase hepatic gene expression. HFD independent of maternal genotype decreased fetal growth and birth weight. The college-aged female bodybuilders in this study consumed nutrient-dense, low-fat foods and participated in strenuous exercise to develop their physiques. Non-competitors maintained consistent energy intake, exercise patterns, and body weight throughout the study period. In contrast, competitors exhibited periods of caloric restriction and excess associated with the pre- and post-competition events. This study indicates that college-aged female bodybuilders have food intake and exercise patterns that are unique to the sport.

Leptin receptors are present in taste buds and previous research indicates that leptin administration modified electrophysiological and behavioral responses to sweet taste. It is now known that sweet taste is temperature dependent. We examined the influence of (1) stimulus temperature on chorda tympani (CT) nerve responses to sucrose, saccharin and NH(4)Cl; and (2) leptin administration on CT nerve responses to sucrose, saccharin and other basic taste stimuli at 35°C that maximized sweet-taste sensitivity in C57BL/6 mice. We found that the CT nerve responded with greater magnitude to sucrose and saccharin as stimulus temperature increased from 23 to 35°C and then declined at higher temperatures. In contrast, the CT nerve responses to NH(4)Cl increased in magnitude as temperature increased from 23 to 44°C. We also showed that leptin selectively increased the CT nerve responses to sucrose at 35°C in both fasted and free-fed mice. The responses of mice treated with the saline vehicle did not change. Our findings are consistent with the notion that leptin binds with its receptors in fungiform taste buds and alters the message conveyed by sugar-responsive neurons to the brain.

This study investigated changes in oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in partially edentulous patients treated with removable dental prostheses (RDPs), fixed dental prostheses (FDPs), fixed-removable (combined) restorations (COMBs), and implant-supported fixed prostheses (ISFPs). A total of 200 patients (30 to 50 years old) were enrolled: 45 received RDPs, 32 received FDPs, 66 received COMBs, and 57 received ISFPs. OHRQoL was measured using the shortened version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) before treatment and 6 weeks and 6 months after treatment. Treatment groups were sex-neutral; however, significant differences were found relative to age and Kennedy classification. A clinical and a non-clinical sample are compared. The sample of in total 704 infants younger than one year consists of different subsamples. To test the differences between a clinical and a non-clinical sample assessed with the questionnaire, data of 134 infants brought to the outpatient unit for parents with their infants and toddlers and a matched sample are used. The principal components analysis results in three well-interpretable scales correlating with each other, which all show a high internal consistency. The aim of our study was to determine the efficacy of three different adsorbents, inorganic (modified zeolite), organic (esterified glucomannans) and mixed (inorganic and organic components, with the addition of enzymes), in protecting broilers from the toxic effects of ochratoxin A in feed. Broilers were fed diets containing 2 mg/kg of ochratoxin A (OTA) and supplemented with adsorbents at the recommended concentration of 2 g/kg for 21 days. The presence of OTA led to a notable reduction in body weight, lower weight gain, increased feed conversion and induced histopathological changes in the liver and kidneys. The presence of inorganic, organic and mixed adsorbents in contaminated feed only partially reduced the negative effects of OTA on the broiler performances. Pinealectomized (Px) and sham-operated (non-Px) rats were used. We evaluated structural changes, and catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH), super oxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. We propose that deletion of pro-melanin-concentrating hormone (pMCH) would increase energy expenditure and further improve glucose tolerance in mice lacking stearoyl-coA desaturase-1 (SCD1). To test our hypothesis, we bred and metabolically challenged Pmch-/-; Scd1-/- double-knockout mice, with comparison to Pmch-/- mice; Scd1-/- mice and C57Bl/6J controls. Deletion of both Pmch and Scd1 increased both food intake and energy expenditure relative to control mice. Pmch-/-; Scd1-/- double-knockout mice had improved glucose tolerance relative to control mice. The majority of the metabolic effects were contributed by inactivation of the Scd1 gene. We conclude that the increased food intake and increased energy expenditure of Scd1-/- mice are independent of the neuropeptide melanin-concentrating hormone.

The aim of this study was to assess lycopene intake in daily food rations of women (n = 725) from the Lower Silesia region. The data on the lycopene intake were collected using 24-hour recall and diet history questionnaire. The intake of lycopene was not too low. The average lycopene contents in the daily food rations of 725 women from Lower Silesia region was 7.5 mg. The highest lycopene intake was found in the food daily rations of women with BMI > 30. In examined group of women low knowledge on the importance of the role of lycopene in health was noticed. Educational interventions are required to inform women and to increase lycopene intake among them.

Twelve female Fischer rats were randomized into ovariectomy and sham operation groups. A rat eater meter measured the feeding indexes for 15 days before and 25 days after ovariectomy, and later for 35 days with hormone therapy.
