EnglishFunnyhouse highlights the struggle of Sarah whose black skin evinces a lack of iden...

In my analysis I deal with some causes and origins of evil and of moral degeneration in the human dimension. My analysis focuses on Plato's Republic. The origins and causes of the presence of injustice and of vice lie in the very structure of the human soul. The division of the soul into parts which are at least reciprocally independent of each other implies that there is the possibility that they are in conflict with each other. This is the origin of injustice and the root of every form of evil. The correct equilibrium among the parts of the soul, which, in my opinion, are to be interpreted as authentic potencies, can be achieved only by developing the rational part. This development requires a thorough education in philosophy. Throughout my analysis I quote passages in which Plato points out the presence of bad instincts and, in general, of a morally difficult component in our soul. The kind of soul considered in my analysis is the embodied soul.

This paper proposes an analytical form of CoVaR, which is compatible with the existing VaR and stress-test based risk management framework, adding value by capturing systemic risk of a portfolio. Analytical CoVaR is a computationally inexpensive risk tool used to screen systemic risk. It is reasonably accurate and also has desired statistical properties hence is suitable for use by investment companies, brokerage …rms, mutual funds and any business that evaluates risk. Empirical backtest results show that historical analytical CoVaR exceedances pass both Failure Frequency Test and Conditional Test. The paper also presents a theoretical frameworks within which to investigate how analytical CoVaR captures systemic risk when asset and market returns are serially independent and when they are serially correlated. Analytical CoES is presented as an extension to capture loss beyond CoVaR.

Abstract: We are presenting a method to recognise geographical references in free text. Our tool must work on various languages with a minimum of language-dependent resources, except a gazetteer. The main difficulty is to disambiguate these place names by distinguishing places from persons and by selecting the most likely place out of a list of homographic place names world-wide. The system uses a number of language-independent clues and heuristics to disambiguate place name homographs. The final aim ...

In this paper we explore alternate projection and imaging mechanisms that don’t rely on luminous sources, such as screens or LEDs. We investigate how sunlight can be used along a continuum ranging from non-informational aesthet-ic lighting to simple controlled reflections of sunlight that provide enough information to depict legible content. Re-thinking the pixel as a reflection exposed challenges in me-chanics, material and ease of control. We found that slow, precise movements work best. The threshold between pixel and non-pixel provides great potential to add additional aes-thetics to a depiction based on sunlight, by transitioning be-tween atmospheric ambient lighting and information repre-sentation. Our exploration of depictions without traditional information-rich content provides an alternative to think about ambient, calm and public displays. ESR: estrogen receptor locus IGF-I: insulin-like growth factor I MAS: Marker-assisted selection QTL: quantitative trait loci This paper discusses the use of genetic engineering applications in animal breeding, including a description of the methods, their potential and current uses and ethical issues. Genetic engineering is the name of a group of techniques used to identify, replicate, modify and transfer the genetic material of cells, tissues or complete organisms. Important applications of genetic engineering in animal breeding are: 1) Marker-assisted selection (MAS). The objective of this technology is to increase disease resistance, productivity and product quality in economically important animals by adding

Abstract: In this work we discuss the exact solution to the algebraic equation associated to the Ricci tensor in the quadratic f(R,Q) extension of Palatini gravity. We show that an exact solution always exists, and in the general case it can be found by matrix diagonalization. Furthermore, the general implications of the solution are analysed in detail, including the generation of an effective cosmological constant, and the recovery of the f(R) and f(Q) theories as particular cases in the corresponding limit. In addition, it is proposed a power series expansion of the solution which is successfully applied to the case of the electromagnetic field. We show that this power series expansion may be useful to deal perturbatively with some problems in the context of Palatini gravity.

Whenever I edit a poorly written manu-script, I wish that the authors were aware of the importance of writing concisely and clearly and of the proper structuring of a research report. That knowledge would save both their time and my time, and scientists who are not proficient in English could also save the money they may have to pay translators or author’s editors for sub-stantial corrections of their manuscripts. We can alleviate the problem by provid-ing instructions for scientists and science translators. However, to be effective, the instructions must be concise and clear. That is why in 2010 the European Association of Science Editors (EASE) published its

We are presenting a method to recognise geographical references in free text. The final aim is to index texts with the countries and cities they mention and to automatically visualise this information on geographical maps using various tools.
