Two major influences on contemporary societies dictate that diffusion and hybridization of communicative norms will be an increasingly significant feature of our communication landscape: Transnational population flows; and the impact of mediated communication, including by means of the Internet. This study explores implications of different ways of viewing the ‘cultural’ and ‘communication’ dimensions of intercultural communication in such volatile circumstances.

One year after the massive, five-volume Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa Report appeared in 1998, we indisputably witness in Coetzee's Disgrace, by way of the account of professor David Lurie's downfall, the upheaval of a country in transition. The representation of this upheaval, however, drew considerable attention nationally and internationally and sparked a still ongoing debate on what Coetzee was trying to say about the life and times of post-apartheid South Africa. In this essay it is argued that an interpretation that allows itself to be guided too much by an allegorical meaning of Disgrace's mirror plot and that is too quick to accept the referentiality of a post-apartheid South Africa screaming for future images, ignores important if not essential plot lines and intertextual echoes. The powers of imagination, as masterfully deployed by J. M. Coetzee, make the role of literature in the production of cultural memory both monumentalising and ambiguous.

This essay will focus on the unpublished legal papers relating to the 19th-century Irish women authors E. Œ. Somerville (1858 – 1949) and Martin Ross (1862 – 1915) and their case of plagiarism against the authors of By the Brown Bog in 1913. The article will begin by summarising the ways in which the introduction of copyright law in Great Britain in 1709 altered aesthetic and legal definitions of authorship, and how this new conceptualisation of the author figure effectively disenfranchised collaborative modes of creativity and literary production. In so doing, the essay will investigate Somerville and Ross's classification as popular, collaborative short story writers. The popularity of their Irish R.M. tales, it will be argued, harmed their case of plagiarism. The study will use a detailed analysis of Somerville and Ross's legal correspondence to argue for the ways in which copyright law not only defined the ‘author’, but also the term ‘originality’, which was sorely affected by aesthetic and moral conceptions of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ literature.

Invested in a mimetic approach, scholarship on Partition narratives in Indian cinema rarely addresses the films in terms of the body of culture memory they produce. In addition, it often disregards popular cinema. Thus, while the films of Ritwik Ghatak have been widely discussed, they have rarely been considered alongside popular Bengali cinema of that decade, films which often refer to Partition within the broader framework of popular melodrama. This article will read the two ‘rival’ bodies of work for their potent engagement with the production of memory within the cinematic poetics of partition. In relation to images of the city as a cinematic trope, this essay aims to offer fresh insights into Partition within the broader scopic regime of visual modernity.

Originating in humanities departments, narratology has always prided itself on being a transparent and teachable discipline. The challenge addressed in this essay is the design of an interdisciplinary course in which students and theorists from literature, linguistics, pragmatics, philosophy, and cognitive psychology join forces in order to address the common subject of storytelling, memory, and cognition. Since narratology, in its most general definition, is the theory of stories and storytelling, and, in its postclassical guises, has become strongly aware of psychological and cognitive factors, it offers an ideal meeting ground as well as a promising point of departure. The essay is strongly indebted to Cynthia Freeland's (2001) articles on "Teaching Cognitive Science and the Arts", and, following Freeland's example, it concludes by presenting a five-unit course pack of reading and discussion materials.

Abstract This essay analyses Coetzee’s success as a world literary author, from two distinct angles. The first stems from his non-European ‘southern’ position (and self-positioning) as a South African and then Australian writer with South American links, and his subscription to an ‘imaginary of the South’. The second looks beyond the colonial indebtedness to Europe, focusing instead on some of the ‘minor’ European cultures to which the oeuvre refers, and then on the ways in which it evokes Asia. As will be seen, Coetzee’s work from the very start acknowledges the pivotal role of Asia in the formation of Western identity.

Building on the achievements of the New Economic Criticism, literary critics have continued to expand our understanding of the many points of contact and separation between literature and economics. This issue aims to push established scholarship into new directions. It seeks to explore new approaches and methodologies and thus to shed light on some of the many connections between literary texts and, to use William Wordsworth’s words, ‘Getting and Spending’. The contributions span a wide historical range and reflect, in different ways, about the New Economic Criticism in European contexts.

This introduction to the special issue Brexit and Academia sketches some of the key challenges for academia that emerged from Brexit. Based on a brief overview of the current state of the withdrawal and the trade agreements, we reflect upon the consequences of Brexit on transnational research, academic mobility, and research funding. We discuss the role and function of Euroscepticism for understand- ing the United Kingdom’s slow but constant move towards exiting the Union. We further outline the key function of Euroscepticism for explaining the formation of an imagined community of ‘Brexiteers’ in fostering the rise of an ‘island mentality.’ The introduction closes by considering potentially productive effects of a crisis such as Brexit, which has opened up new areas for research across various disciplines.
