Access to trans-affirmative mental health care can contribute to the well-being of the trans community. Historically, the psychiatrization and pathologization of trans and non-binary people has led to interventions which have negatively affected the well-being of this population(Turban et al., 2020). In response, both the trans community and mental health professionals now identify trans-affirmative interventions as a way to enhance trans and non-binary people well-being (Pullen Sansfaçon et Medico, 2021).

The objective of this presentation is to point out which factors impact the access to trans-affirmative mental health care for trans and non-binary people. The results emerged from a qualitative research realized by Yannick Gaudette during his master’s degree, under the direction of Maria Nengeh Mensah, at Université du Québec à Montréal. 

In light of recent "bathroom bills" in several states, this essay addresses gender identity in the Bible, which proponents of the bills claim supports their legislation. However, this essay argues that the Bible challenges many aspects of gender, especially in Roman perspective, and actually supports a more tolerant and communal respect for gender identity and the transgender community as a whole.

In this paper, I explain how the gender binary is described by Sandy Stone, an academic theorist, media theorist and author, and considered a founder of the academic discipline of transgender studies, as a matter of space from which trans people cannot participate in the discourse. I use this notion of gender as a matter of space to compare Stone’s discourse to that of feminist theorist and artist bell hooks, who describes the position of black women as a matter of space as well – a space from which black women develop an oppositional gaze and thus engage in the discourse, instead of being excluded from it. I compare Stone’s strategy of reclaiming the insult and the notion of counter discourse that arises from that with hooks’ notion of the oppositional gaze, as I examine how these new discourses can lead to forms of agency in a context of oppression. I take into consideration philosopher of feminist epistemology Sandra Harding’s Standpoint Theory,  in order to understand Stone’s and hooks’ creation of a critical space that is developed through the deconstruction of oppressive binary systems, and in which knowledge and agency are generated by marginalized groups.

This MSc thesis explores a transmasculine embodiment through bodies, acts, and objects, from a new materialist perspective. The study is situated within the field of transgender studies, and the research question, ‘how can transmasculine embodiment through the materialities of the body and everyday acts and objects be understood through new materialism’, is answered through an autoethnography. Key findings are that a) a trans-becoming emerges through the phenomenon of meeting someone’s eyes, b) through material-discursive practices transmasculine people work with and against the body, and c) onto-epistemologies of race and gender emerge through the interplay of temporal, spatial, and corporeal processes.

Third genders have a recorded history of more than 4,000 years. Asian countries have centuries old histories of existence of gender-variant males who in the moderns times are labeled as 'transgender women'. Kama Sutra provides vivid description of sexual life of people with 'third nature' (Tritiya Prakriti). These identities have always been part of the broader culture and were treated with great respect. There was a practice from advantaged sections of society to treat the vulnerable groups of people as their main target. They are hassled by the superior community on the basis of customs, social practices and cultural factors. In many situations they are denied life and liberty to enjoy their human rights and the basic rights to live in the society. They are facing many issues in the society. Of which the most important are the denial of land, property rights , basic dignity, acceptance from the society as basic human beings, denial of their social and cultural status. They are deprived from the mainstream society and they are still in the stagnant situation. Apart from this many factors such as economic aspect of poverty, customs and traditional practices in each society also keep them away from the main stream of the society. The case of third gender people and the severity of their situations are very pathetic, leading them to lead a life of agony and frustration. Every individual in the society has some basic rights to be treated on an equal basis, denial of their rights on routine life, social, economic and cultural perspectives only contradict the development of a society.

This article discusses the acquisition of a physical impairment/disability through voluntary body modification, or transability. From the perspectives of critical genealogy and feminist intersectional analysis, the article considers the ability and cis*/trans* axes in order to question the boundaries between trans and transabled experience and examines two assumptions impeding the conceptualization of their placement on the same continuum: 1) trans studies assume an able-bodied trans identity and able-bodied trans subject of analysis; and 2) disability studies assume a cis* disabled identity. The perception of transsexuality and transability as mutually exclusive phenomena results from a non-intersectional analysis of transsexuality as an issue of sex/gender, but not ability, and of transability as an issue of ability, but not sex/gender. Difficulty recognizing continuities between these phenomena thus stems from an ableist interpretation of sex/gender and a cis(gender)normative* interpretation of ability. This article aims to: 1) enrich intersectional analysis in trans and disability studies and transability scholarship; 2) complicate disability studies, in which disabilities are often presumed “involuntary”, and encourage the decentering of a cis* subject; 3) encourage trans studies to decenter an able-bodied subject; and 4) advocate for increased dialogue and the creation of alliances between trans and disability studies and movements.

This monography aims to reflect the problems in detention of transgender people in Brazil.
For this purpose, initially, we face the difficulties of classification and determination of the
object of study. This fact highlights the importance of analyzing the phenomenon of the
gender binary pattern, emphasizing the reflections of Judith Butler, and the limits of this
categorization since this standard justifies and defines the stigmas against those who are
fleeing from the gender binary pattern, which makes the inclusion of transgender individuals
in the western penitentiary system more complicated and doomed to repeated violence and
discrimination. To finer grasp the subject, we approach the Yogyakarta’s Principles, already
used to support a decision of the Brazilian Supreme Court, seeking to better debate, respect
and unify the rights of this group of people regardless of their gender identity, including,
expressly, the situation of transgender inmates. Still, we observe the prison praxis measures
being adopted in other western legal systems in order to achieve a better understanding of the
phenomenon in Brazil, specifically the U.S. and Italy. Last, but not least, having as parameter
all theoretical, legal and practical framework raised, we intend to analyze the situation of
transgender inmates in the Brazilian legal system more broadly, noting both legislative
attention given to the subject and actions adopted in Brazilian prisons. To perform this
necessary debate about the situation of the transgender inmates, we did, in the methodological
point of view, a qualitative, exploratory, and jurisprudential literature search, with the
purpose, in the future, to provide a penitentiary policy more effective, which respect the
dignity of the transgender people and avoid practices of disrespect and violence against these
individuals.

Les personnes trans et non-binaires accèdent aux services en santé mentale pour diverses raisons : questionnements identitaires, soutien au processus de transition, détresse psychologique (Gaudette, 2020). La littérature sur les expériences de cette communauté auprès des services en santé mentale demeure émergente, particulièrement en contexte québécois. Les objectifs de cette recherche, réalisée dans le cadre de la maîtrise en travail social à l’Université du Québec à Montréal, sont les suivants: 1- Identifier les facilitateurs, ainsi que les obstacles, à l’accès aux services trans-affirmatifs en santé mentale; 2- Connaître la perception et les expériences des personnes trans à propos des interventions qu’elles ont reçues et qu’elles souhaiteraient avoir en santé mentale; 3- Produire une réflexion sur le développement des services trans-affirmatifs en santé mentale.

ABSTRACT
This research, situated at the junction of feminist, trans and disability studies, examines the limits of intersectional feminist analyses and the difficulties faced in their consideration of gender identity and ability through an analysis of two types of body modification: transsexuality and transability (voluntary disability acquisition). In response to the question “what are the limits of intersectional analyses and how can they be addressed?”, three objectives are proposed: 1) participate in the critical examination of specific limits of intersectional feminist analyses in order to diversify their axes through the consideration of gender identity and ability; 2) question the conceptual assumptions and cisgenderist and (cis)ableist privileges informing negative discourses around these body modifications and highlight points of convergence among feminist, transactivist and anti-ableist movements in order to encourage dialogue and solidarities among them; 3) provide feminist, trans and disability studies with an enriched model of intersectionality capable of addressing new claims for justice from oppressed groups, such as those of transsexual and transabled individuals. The negative discourses of certain feminists and other scientists regarding these body modifications are mapped and critiqued through a methodology combining archeological, genealogical and critical discourse analysis. The reflections presented here, inspired by poststructuralist and queer approaches, explore neither the “origins” of transsexuality and transability nor their motivations; this is a study of the negative discourses about these phenomena and the normative systems from which they originate. The result is an important contribution to theoretical, normative and political fields of knowledge: the examination of two “extreme” cases of body modification reveals the bodily normativities of dominant regimes, specifically cisgenderism and (cis)ableism, that remain as unrecognized in our societies as in our social movements.

Cette recherche se situe à la jonction des études féministes, trans et sur la production du handicap. Elle s’intéresse aux limites des analyses féministes intersectionnelles et leurs difficultés à considérer certains axes identitaires, telles l’identité de genre et les capacités, à travers l’analyse de deux cas de figure de modifications corporelles, soit la transsexualité et la transcapacité (transformation visant à acquérir un handicap). Cette thèse s’articule autour de la question suivante : quels sont les angles morts des analyses intersectionnelles et comment pouvons-nous y remédier? Pour répondre à cette question, cette thèse propose trois objectifs : 1) Participer aux questionnements critiques entourant certaines limites des analyses féministes intersectionnelles pour en diversifier les axes à partir de l’identité de genre et des capacités; 2) Remettre en question les présupposés conceptuels et les privilèges cisgenristes et (cis)capacitistes qui sous-tendent les discours négatifs entourant ces modifications corporelles et mettre en valeur les points de convergence entre les mouvements féministes, transactivistes et anticapacitistes pour instaurer des dialogues et des solidarités entre eux; 3) Fournir un modèle enrichi de l’intersectionnalité pouvant être déployé en études féministes, trans et sur la production du (trans)handicap, apte à répondre aux nouvelles revendications de justice de groupes opprimés, comme celles des personnes transsexuelles et transcapacitaires. Who was Catalina de Erauso, the Lieutenant Nun? Swashbuckler, brawler, hard-headed businessperson, soldier, gallant, celebrity, transvestite, nun? How can one fail to be fascinated by her? A woman, yet a man; a soldier, yet a nun; Spanish, yet Basque. Catalina de Erauso embodied the contradictions and conflicts of the Early Modern Period, but she also transcended them in her own way. She became a stage on which we see how tensions between different identities played out in sixteenth-and seventeenth-century Spain, particularly the tensions between two sexual identities, male and female, and between the competing and multiple national "identities" already defined and being defined within that new thing that was "Spain." This book explores the different facets of Erauso's persona: her sexual identity and the factors that determined her choice of gender roles; and her Basque origin and its impact on her life and her self-image.

Rationale and background: Many surveys include gender in demographic data. This has historically been male / female in many fields. All surveys and human research are concerned with gendered humans. As such, this is a consideration for all social researchers. In order to accurately and meaningfully measure gender of participants, it must be acknowledged that growing numbers of people are identifying with a gender outside of man or woman. As well as reduced accuracy of data, neglecting to include these people in surveys may result in feelings of exclusion and discrimination. These two aspects make this a concern for ethical conduct of research. Additionally, woman / man is now preferred to female / male as the latter is considered biologist and not appropriate when talking about gender (as opposed to sex). Sex assigned at birth and gender identity are sometimes both specified. It is proposed that for studies that are not explicitly about sex/gender, for pragmatism and ease, only gender is asked. These guidelines include recommendations about respectful language for projects that are not specifically about sex/gender in content but have a demographic question about gender. They also include more detailed guidelines for projects that are specifically about gender, and another set of guidelines for those that are about sexuality or sexual identity. Projects that are not specifically about sex/gender The key here is to allow for accurate representation of genders outside of men and women, as well as using man / woman (gender) rather than male / female (sex). Longtemps cantonnée au changement de sexe, la question trans est aujourd’hui abordée comme changement de genre au sein des disciplines ouvertes aux études de genre dans un renouvellement et un enrichissement du champ épistémique. Cette recherche inscrite dans l’interdiscipline que forment les Sciences de l’information et de la communication se veut aussi un travail précurseur des Transgender studies francophones suivant la pensée de Sandy Stone et dans la lignée des studies anglo-saxonnes. Cette recherche porte ainsi son attention sur la construction sociale et médiatique des transidentités (personnes transgenres, transsexuelles, identités alternatives). La problématique semble innovante car elle conjugue exigence et créativité  de la recherche avec le statut de la chercheuse insider et outsider à son terrain. Ce premier volume s’attache à croiser l’état des lieux du terrain associatif et militant transidentitaire français avec l’histoire des définitions de la médecine légale depuis les années 1970 aux révisions les plus récentes. Cette nouvelle histoire des trans en France est éclairée par la description des processus de politisation des groupes, de la diversité des identifications de genre, de leurs subcultures, des apports de l’internet et des épistémologies féministes, de leurs rapports aux médias et en retour aux effets de la médiatisation.

Ce travail de recherche a été récompensé par  le 2e Prix jeune chercheur francophone en SIC – 2014,  décerné par la Société française des sciences  de l’information et de la communication (SFSIC).

RESUMO
O presente artigo discute os direitos e garantias constitucionais da pessoa transexual e seu reflexo na seara previdenciária. Trata-se de pesquisa qualitativa, que utiliza do método dedutivo com suporte de fontes bibliográficas, históricas e documentais. Compreende existir uma diferença entre a identidade de gênero, o que leva as diferenças entre as pessoas cisgêneros, transgêneros, transexuais, travestis e não binários. Reconhece a batalha da pessoa trans em busca da despatolização da transexualidade. Visualiza a existência de direitos e garantias constitucionais das pessoas trans, ante a universalidade dos direitos fundamentais. Identifica que não há legislação específica sobre a matéria, o que conduz a uma incompatibilidade do sistema previdenciário atual com as questões constitucionais, identificadas pelos tribunais superiores e que são relativas à pessoa trans como sujeito de direito. Ao final, propõe como solução que seja tomado como critério para concessão da aposentadoria por idade o sexo constante no registro civil no momento da requisição do benefício.

ABSTRACT
This article discusses the constitutional rights and guarantees of the transsexual person and their impact on social security. It develops a qualitative research, which employs the deductive method supported by bibliographic, historical and documentary sources. It understands that there is a difference between gender identity, which leads to differences between cisgender, transgender, transsexual, transvestite and non-binary people. It recognizes the battle of the trans person in search of the de-patholization of transsexuality. It visualizes the existence of constitutional rights and guarantees for trans people, in view of the universality of fundamental rights. It identifies that there is no specific legislation on the matter, which leads to an incompatibility of the current social security system with the constitutional issues, identified by the higher courts and which are related to the trans person as a subject of law. At the end, it proposes as a solution that the gender shown in the civil registry at the time of request of the benefit be taken as a criterion for granting retirement by age.

This paper offers a discussion of the rationale for the creation of sports categorization criteria based on sporting genealogy and the gendered body, as proposed by Torres et al. in their article 'Beyond Physiology: Embodied Experience, Embodied Advantage, and the Inclusion of Transgender Athletes in Competitive Sport'. The strength of their 'phenomenological' account lies in its complex account of human experience; but this is also what makes it impractical and difficult to operationalize. Categorization rather requires simplicity and practicability, if it is to be applied to all athletes (and not exceptionally to transgender athletes). This discussion helps us to formulate three general principles for the process of categorization of athletes, relating to fairness, verifiability and practicability.

Transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) youth who suffer from gender dysphoria are at a substantially elevated risk of numerous adverse physical and psychosocial outcomes compared with their cisgender peers. Innovative treatment options used to support and affirm an individual's preferred gender identity can help resolve gender dysphoria and avoid many negative sequelae of nontreatment. Yet, despite advances in these relatively novel treatment options, which appear to be highly effective in addressing gender dysphoria and mitigating associated adverse outcomes, ethical challenges abound in ensuring that young patients receive appropriate, safe, affordable treatment and that access to this treatment is fair and equitable. We will explore the gendered viewpoints and voices of a variety of essayists, writers, filmmakers, storytellers, historians, and activists. In particular, we will investigate how personal & political identities (like gender, race, class, and sexuality) position individuals differently in society, which contributes to how individuals experience and make sense of their world. We will study how our own relationships within American cultural systems of privilege and oppression contribute to the theories, ideas, narratives, norms, and stories we see as the " norm. " We will examine how individuals resist inequalities, create new systems of change, and engage in transformational politics. Although some of the focus of the course is women's experiences, we will question what the term " woman " actually means by expanding the category to include a range of diverse perspectives. We will consider women, men, and non-binary individuals equally as agents of change, whose lives and projects impact the direction of feminism, culture, and " voice " on a wider scale.

Stigmatization is a socially and culturally constructed process, occurring in social interactions, whereby a person is labeled as different and then devalued, resulting in status loss and discrimination. In this article, we present four key arguments as to why qualitative research is imperative to understanding and changing stigma: (a) Stigmatization is complex and qualitative research is well-suited for exploring complex phenomenon; (b) Qualitative research is participatory and offers substantial opportunities for meaningful community engagement, which promotes agency and empowerment, and redresses power imbalances; (c) Qualitative research is imperative to effective stigma reduction; and (d) Qualitative research informs further scientific inquiry and plays an important role in ensuring that we focus on important and relevant aspects of stigma in our research. For each argument, we outline relevant literature and discuss our own experiences with conducting qualitative research on stigmatization. We lean on both theory and practice, paying attention to not only the outcomes of, but also the processes involved, in conducting qualitative research on stigmatization. We then address two criticisms of qualitative research that undermine its legitimacy. We conclude that to better understand stigma, to redress power imbalances, and to inform interventions and further scientific inquiry, we must continue to conduct qualitative research across stigmatized identities and conditions.

Trans*, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-Conforming individuals and communities are often rendered invisible within quantitative data; silenced and stifled by binary gender options, an inability to indicate transitions (i.e. grouped in with Cisgender individuals), being limited to selecting one gender, or lumped into categories as part of research designs rather than in accordance with who they are. They also run the risk of being treated as part of a monolith, with their unique lived experiences unexplored and intersectional analysis unpursued. Although accommodating diverse genders presents considerable challenges for statistical analysis, these obstacles are surmountable and must be challenged in order to gather vital data. This paper will provide an overview of the design, dissemination, and analysis of a survey focused on Gender Minority students in Irish third-level institutions. Focus will be paid to the demographic results of the survey and the growing complexity of gender identity (e.g. nearly a quarter of respondents selecting multiple genders). The paper will also highlight the challenges posed by the findings (e.g. conducting analysis on 18 different genders) and how the research team attempted to address them while maintaining a commitment to empowering each respondent’s voice, thereby providing suggested practices for future surveys. The paper will conclude by stressing the importance of quantitative data for designing effective policies, especially in terms of LGBTQIA+ healthcare, public safety, and educational inclusion.

I was given the assignment to write a paper connecting Jay Prosser's 1998 "Second Skins: The Body Narratives of Transsexuality," specifically the chapter titled A Skin of One's Own: Toward a Theory of Transsexual Embodiment, and a more contemporary photo series by Zackary Drucker and Rhys Ernst, a couple in the earlier stages of their "opposite" physical and medical transitions. Additionally, I delve into an analysis of one particular photo in juxtaposition to a famous but widely criticized 19th c. painting.

Given the relative invisibility of female-to-male trans identities in academic literature and cultural representations, the author attempts to provide a psychoanalytical understanding of his therapeutic work in the French activist milieu with an adult wishing to change the female gender assigned at birth. On the basis of the theoretical framework of enigmatic messages by Jean Laplanche and gender melancholy by Judith Butler, he explores the multiple expressions of violence—intrapsychic, family, social, and clinical—that contribute to the complex dynamics of gender subjectivity. In the context of these cumulative traumas, the therapist’s self-questioning of his own countertransference proves crucial. The author further reflects on the intersectional interweaving of ethnicity and gender.

An examination of the early Common Law’s recognition of intersexuality, focusing on three cases in which a person’s legal sex designation was a central issue.  This article was published in the Texas Journal of Women and the Law, 14:77 (2004).

This essay seeks to interrogate what it means to become a legible man as someone who held space as a multiplicity of identities before realising and negotiating my trans manhood. It raises the question of how we as trans people account for the shifting nature of our subjectivity, our embodiment and, indeed, our bodies. This essay locates this dialogue on the site of my body where I have placed many tattoos, which both speak to and inform my understanding of myself as a trans man in Ireland. Queer theory functions as a focal tool within this essay as I question family, home, transition, sexuality, and temporality through a queer autoethnographic reading of the tattoos on my body. This essay pays homage to the intersecting traditions within queer theory and autoethnography. It honours the necessity for the indefinable, for alternative knowledge production and representations, for the space we need in order to become, to allow for the uncertainty of our becoming.

This essay traces the history of the debates about and the  theological approaches to widening the embrace of LGBTIQ people in The Episcopal Church. It includes substantial discussion not only of gay and lesbian clergy and marriage equality but also of transgender people, lay and ordained, in the life of the church.

Notre étude des représentations médiatiques des transidentités est centrée sur la télévision, en raison de la richesse de ses différentes formes de création et de diffusion (actualités, reportages, documentaires, débats, divertissements, fictions et cinéma). Elle s’appuie sur cinq années d’observation participative du terrain transidentitaire français (associations et collectifs transidentitaires, personnes transgenres et transsexes) et sur un corpus de plus de huit cents documents audiovisuels, constitué sur les bases archives de l’Institut National de l’Audiovisuel. Nous nous intéressons aux modélisations sociales et culturelles, causes et conséquences du processus de médiatisation. L’analyse des glissements successifs du lexique médiatique du fait-divers au fait de société, jusqu’à la notion de l’égalité des droits permet de décrire et d’étudier les liens qu’entretiennent des représentations sociales et des représentations médiatiques consubstantielles. Les logiques de production, les structures de représentation des périodes déterminées éclairent sur les dynamiques sociales en action et en interaction.

Abstract. Our study of the media representations of trans-identities focuses on television, because of the wealth of its various forms of creation and broadcasting: news, reports, documentaries, debates, entertainments, fictions and cinema. It leans on five years of participant observation of the French field (transgender and transsexuals associations) and on a corpus of more than eight hundred audio-visual documents, constituted on the archival bases of the French National Audio-visual Institute. We are interested in the social and cultural modelling, causes and consequences of the process of mediatisation. The analysis of the successive shifts of the media lexicon, from the news stories to the social phenomenon and lastly the notion of equal rights, allows us to describe and to study the links which maintain social representations and consubstantial media representations. The logics of production, the structures of representation of determined periods enlighten on the social dynamics in action and interaction.

Aim: Patients with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) are considered to have an increased risk for wound healing complications. Surgeons may therefore be hesitant to offer elective surgeries, including gender-affirming surgeries (GAS), to EDS patients. At our center, we frequently encountered patients presenting for GAS evaluation with the co-existing diagnosis of EDS. This study aims to establish the prevalence of EDS diagnosis in our GAS patients and compare their post-operative complications to patients without EDS diagnosis. Methods: This is a single-institution retrospective case-control study on all patients who underwent GAS from 2016-2020. Data include EDS diagnosis, demographics, operation, and complications (including minor wound healing issues). Results: Of 1363 patients presenting for GAS, 36 (2.6%) had EDS diagnoses and were matched with 108 control patients. Major complications requiring surgical intervention in the OR occurred in 6 patients (4.2%), (2.8% EDS vs. 5.4% controls; P = 0.63), while 8.3% of EDS and 14% of controls required minor interventions (P = 0.38). The rate of wound healing issues of any severity was 28% in EDS vs. 47% in control groups (P = 0.04). Conclusion: The prevalence of EDS diagnosis in our patient population is 132 times the highest reported prevalence in the general population. Wound healing issues and the need for additional post-operative interventions in the group with EDS diagnosis were not significantly different from the control group. Our findings suggest that patients with a diagnosis of EDS undergoing GAS have comparable outcomes to patients without EDS. Concerns for postoperative complications should not be a barrier to offering GAS to patients presenting with an EDS diagnosis.

Trans individuals face unique sets of obstacles when accessing resources to end the violence due to their marginalized identity and the feminist definitions of what intimate partner violence is. Kimberly Nixon, a transwoman who was refused a volunteer position within the Vancouver Rape Relief Society due to being a transwoman, exemplifies the struggles that trans individuals face due to structural violence and heteronormativity. The case of Nixon v. Vancouver Rape Relief Society demonstrates the additional obstacles that trans individuals face to accessing services to ending domestic violence, and supports the resistance to a heteronormative system which excludes trans individuals.

This article considers and rejects claims reform of the Gender Recognition Act 2004 (GRA) to allow gender self-declaration will undermine non-trans women's rights and lead to an increase in harms to non-trans women. The article argues that these claims are founded on a mistaken understanding of the proper legal relationship between the GRA and the Equality Act 2010 (EA), and that the harm claim, in any event, lacks a proper evidential basis. The article considers three legal arguments made by gender critical feminists: that sex-based exceptions under the EA cannot be invoked against trans women with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), that the appropriate legal comparator for a trans woman non GRC-holder in a discrimination case is a non-trans man, and that section 22 of the GRA, which protects the privacy of GRC-holders, undermines the ability of women's organisations to regulate access to women-only spaces.
