The paintings gallery of the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum holds one of the great princely collections in Germany. Its core consists in the acquisitions of Duke Anton Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in the late 17th and early 18th century. To house these paintings, the Duke ordered one of the first independent gallery-buildings in Europe to be erected as part of his palace Salzdahlum. But the current frames of the paintings rarely provide evidence of this long history of the collection. They are furthermore dominated by classicist picture frames of the 19th century. Just a small number of paintings still remains in their baroque frames, many stored in the museums depository. Those examples are today valuable sources for the otherwise not documented framings at the lost gallery of Salzdahlum palace. The surviving baroque frames encompass examples in which the paintings were originally acquired as well as products of local workshops, adapting and interpreting various stylistic influences.
Furthermore the observations for Braunschweig get contextualized in the wider development of gallery-framings throughout the 18th century.

Die Gemäldegalerie des Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museums zeigt eine der bedeutenden fürstlichen Sammlungen Deutschlands. Ihr Kernbestand geht auf die Erwerbungen Herzog Anton Ulrichs von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel im späten 17. und frühen 18. Jahrhundert zurück. Um seine Sammlung zu präsentieren, ließ der Herzog eines der ersten freistehenden Galeriegebäude Europas an seinem Schloss Salzdahlum errichten. Die gegenwärtigen Rahmungen der Gemälde geben jedoch nur wenige Hinweise auf diese lange Geschichte der Sammlung. Sie werden vielmehr von klassizistischen Rahmen des 19. Jahrhunderts dominiert. Nur eine relativ kleine Zahl von Bildern trägt noch ihre barocken Rahmen, viele von Ihnen verwahrt in den Depots des Museums. Diese Beispiele bilden heute wertvolle Quellen für die sonst nicht dokumentierten Rahmungen der Salzdahlumer Galerie. Der erhaltene Bestand reicht dabei von „Originalrahmen“, die wohl bereits mit den Gemälden erworben wurden, bis hin zu Produkten lokaler Werkstätten, die unterschiedlichste Einflüsse aufnahmen und neu interpretierten.
Darüber hinaus werden die Beobachtungen zur Braunschweiger Sammlung in den weiteren Kontext der Entwicklung der Galerierahmung im 18. Jahrhundert eingebunden.

In 1994 the Augsburger Kunstsammlungen bought a painting by the german, longtime Italy-based artist Christian Berentz. It shows a fragmentary slab, now lost, from the Ara Pacis Augustae, situated in the garden of Villa Medici in Rome. The same fragment occurs on a drawing by Joseph Wright of Derby, dated in 1774. The paper discusses the now lost fragment and locates it on the  backside of the so called Tellus-Relief. It may have been used to restore the figurative slabs of the altar in 1782 by Francesco Corradori.

Primo studio dedicato a questi due disegni precedentemente inediti, ne chiarisce la tecnica esecutiva, la provenienza, i soggetti e l’autore. 
Inventariati come olii su tela, i due ovati risultano invece disegni eseguiti a penna, pennello e inchiostro marrone acquerellato, con lumeggiature a biacca, su carta applicata su tela. Si tratta probabilmente di bozzetti preparatori per medaglioni da soffitto di una dimora privata, appartenenti in origine ad una serie più ampia. Provenienti dalla collezione di Camillo Tanzi, che li donò al Comune di Milano nel 1881, corrispondono con ogni probabilità a due “modelletti” dello Storer descritti nel 1796 nella collezione bergamasca del conte Giacomo Carrara, alienati nel 1835. I soggetti sono qui identificati con l’episodio biblico dei "Fratelli che mostrano al padre Giacobbe la tunica insanguinata di Giuseppe" e con il "Supplizio di Issione" narrato nelle "Metamorfosi" di Ovidio.
Riferiti alla Scuola veneta del Settecento (Vicenzi, 1915), alla Scuola lombarda di metà Seicento (Roberto Longhi, 1916), e allo Storer in particolare (Frangi, com. or. alla Direzione), sono qui confermati a Johann Christoph Storer sulla base di stringenti confronti con l’opera grafica e pittorica dell’artista tedesco. Caratterizzati da richiami al Cerano e da un’estrema scioltezza compositiva di matrice rubensiana, che anticipa il barocchetto di Sebastiano Ricci, i due disegni sono qui situati negli anni della svolta barocca dello Storer, verso il 1646-48, in prossimità degli affreschi di palazzo Durini.

Primo studio dedicato a un’inedita "Maddalena convertita" di collezione privata, affiorata sul mercato d’arte milanese presso la Porro. Di qualità rilevante ma di attribuzione problematica, l’opera reinterpreta in chiave barocca l’esuberante "Cantante alla spinetta" o "Allegoria della Vanitas" della Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco di Milano, qui riconosciuta definitivamente al cremasco Gian Giacomo Barbello (vedi sotto). La "Maddalena Porro", in cui il rapporto con il modello barbellesco accresce le difficoltà del riconoscimento, è attribuita dall’autrice al pittore tedesco Johann Christoph Storer, tra gli artefici della svolta barocca della pittura milanese del Seicento, che dal 1645 ebbe ripetute occasioni di incrociare il Barbello a Bergamo.

Primo studio dedicato al dipinto, rintracciato nella chiesa parrocchiale di Stresa sulla sponda piemontese del lago Maggiore.
L’attribuzione al pittore tedesco Johann Christoph Storer è argomentata sulla base delle forti suggestioni rubensiane e vandyckiane della figura, ammantata da ridondanti panneggi barocchi . Riscontri probanti con il ciclo di tele di palazzo Terzi a Bergamo, in particolare con il "Convitto di Assuero" firmato e data 1655, consentono all’autrice di situare l’opera negli anni estremi del soggiorno milanese dell’artista, tornato in patria nel 1656.
