In light of the recent passing of the neoliberal geostrategic tactician, Zbigniew Brzezinski, I felt it was time to revisit his 1997 text "Grand Chessboard". Within this book, US Foreign policy objectives were so succinctly explained as the geopolitical landscape moved so turbulently into the beginning decades of the 21st Century.

Despite his vision of American foreign policy as "benign and visionary", the tone of Brzezinski's text is concerned with preserving U.S hegemony as the world's "first truly global superpower".  He saw Eurasia as the "Grand Chessboard" on which this struggle to maintain "continental equilibrium" was to be played out on the road to establishing global governance.

"The defeat and collapse of the Soviet Union was the final step in the rapid ascendance of a Western Hemisphere power, the United States, as the sole and, indeed, the first truly global power. ... 

... it is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges, capable of dominating Eurasia and thus also of challenging America."

The insertion of American idealism into the politics of the Eurasian landmass first occurred with The U.S entry into the First World War, and continued after the Second World War with the ideological struggle with the Soviets during the Cold War. The fate of the continental landmass became dominated by the power struggle between the two major superpowers. 

The struggle was between a great sea power (the U.S) and a great land power (the U.S.S.R), but the decisive area of dispute took place in a central Asian country that still has vital strategic importance on the world stage. ...

Theories of hybrid culture and transculturalism are analyzed from the point of view of comparative literature. In the modern world the transformation of multiculturalism and
globalism towards transculture is an inevitable consequence of the complicated
processes of cultural interaction in all countries of the world. Transculturalism is an
alternative to multiculturalism as a product of globalism and has different rhetoric of
the Other. The transcultural concept, put forward by F. Ortiz as an alternative to the
asymmetric concept of acculturation in the area of cultural contacts, provided
opportunities for describing the complex processes of cultural interaction in the era of
globalization. Transculture is based on the cultural polyphony, in which there should
not be a complete synthesis, where the cultures retain some opacity. The concept of
transculturality can be used as a basis for a modern comparative analysis of literature.
At the same time, key issues of interaction of cultures in post-Soviet discourse are not
solved. Therefore, the study of methodologies of post-Soviet studies is important not
only as theoretical problem, but also as a problem of general cultural significance.
Therefore, the Caribbean philosophy, which is being built as a significant element of
contemporary comparativism in the field of interaction between cultures, directly
concerns the problems of choosing ways of further postcolonial development of postSoviet cultures. Transculturalism proposes the principle of hybridity instead of the
archaic principle of the purity of national culture, declaring the change in attitude to
national languages, cultural traditions and the very concept of nation-state, giving way
to the processes of transnationalization and polyglossia associated with the principle of the networked cosmopolitanism. This is a new relationship between languages and
cultures. Ultimately, this new andmagological interaction between the Own and the
Other. It is a search for a new unity of the various Others.

This paper argues for conceptually dislocating national identity from the nation-state, so that we can recognise the risks and opportunities for global inclusion that national identity presents. The paper offers two arguments for this dislocation approach. First the origins of national identity lie in international mobility and exchange. Second, the contemporary experience with national identity frequently exceeds and may in fact be re-shaping the nation-state. The paper then considers two risks of this dislocation. One is that the strategic choices of individuals with multiple national identities will create unfairness or inequity, the other is that the interpenetration of national identity into the affairs of other states creates problems for democracy. Yet these practices can also provide avenues for representing complex patterns of mobility and attachment, as well as integrating the fates of disparate states, which means they present resources – as well as risks – for global inclusion. So if national identity does not neatly map on to the state structure, and is unlikely to ever do so without considerable conflict and alienation, then we should seek ways to bring out the inclusive potential of such dislocation, while minimizing its tendency to generate patterns of privilege or influence.

In the past decade, urban regeneration policy makers and practitioners have faced a number of difficult challenges, such as sustainability, budgetary constraints, demands for community involvement and rapid urbanization in the Global South. Urban regeneration remains a high profile and important field of government-led intervention, and policy and practice continue to adapt to the fresh challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century, as well as confronting long-standing intractable urban problems and dilemmas. This Companion provides cutting-edge critical review and synthesis of recent conceptual, policy and practical developments within the field. Market globalism reflects the concepts of globalization with neoliberal values and meanings. Neo-liberal is a form of liberalism which favours free-market capitalism. The economy is self-regulated through supply and demand. Globalization boosted a rise in competition in the global world. This benefits many countries in terms of economic advancement. This influence the country positively in aspects regarding the wellbeing of consumers and the economy as a whole. Competition strengthens international competitiveness and the productiveness of the business sector and enhances economic growth as well as dynamic market systems. The fast and vast increase in technology also opened a new era in communication which in return encourages interaction between different nations. Consumers gain the advantage of being able to buy products through online suppliers across the world, getting their goods for a fraction of the cost and delivered directly to your doorstep. The unmatched speed and volume of human mobility caused by globalisation are the most undisguised manifestation in today's era of globalisation. Global population grows at an increased rate in such a way that social and economic imbalance between the rich and the poor countries become intense. This leads to immigration numbers rising in search of better opportunities of employment and quality of life. Better and modern transportation that was created to enable more products and people to be transported to different places, enable the spreading of diseases to increase significantly. To stay in a competitive market, farmers now have to administer drugs and other hormones into animals which produce milk, meat and eggs. These drugs and hormones has a lot of side effects to humans, for example they build resistance against medication that are used to treat certain human diseases. Globalization threatens local production. The availability of foreign foods and produce at a fraction of the cost, displaced local producers and farmers who would have earned a living by selling their produce to local markets. I personally tend NOT to align with market globalisation. The famous quote from Animal farm by George Orwell: " All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others " is a great metaphor for what market globalisation has done to the world. All countries can be seen as equal in the new world, but due to market globalisation some countries seems to benefit more and in such a way advance faster than the rest of the world.

Reactionary anti-globalism is on the march globally. Intersecting with ultra-nationalism, embittered populism, xenophobic racism, police-state authoritarianism, show-man sexism, science-denying anti-environmentalism and border-building calls for the reassertion of sovereignty, it is now crossing borders as prominently as the managerial globalists and vulnerable migrants that its agitators target for repudiation and rejection. This chapter seeks to examine these reactionary developments as morbid symptoms of global social changes that together have led to a crisis of Globalization.  Rather than dehistoricize this crisis as the result of natural populist impulses, the chapter instead offers explanations focused on underlying global social changes that have together led to increasing inequalities, insecurities and instabilities.  Many of these changes, the chapter argues, are linked to the growing power of plutocratic elites who have been able to expand new kinds of monopolistic control and value capture in the context of economic globalization.  While rising plutocratic power undoubtedly contributes to anti-globalist resentment, however, the chapter suggests that we are seeing a kind of contradictory plutocratic convergence of interests globally in which the same elites who have inspired anti-globalism are able to ride the reactionary responses in order to maintain monopolistic advantage.

Como o globalismo vem sendo atacado de maneira superficial e simplista por alguns espíritos neogóticos, com argumentos totalmente equivocados, vou divulgar o meu manifesto globalista, especialmente voltado para o mundo diplomático brasileiro, onde o besteirol antiglobalista que está sendo disseminado desde algum tempo é bem maior. This anthology investigates and explores the far larger body of work coming from sources beyond mainstream cinema reinventing Dracula.

Draculas, Vampires and Other Undead Forms assembles provocative essays that examine Dracula films and their movement across borders of nationality, sexuality, ethnicity, gender, and genre since the 1920s. The essays analyze the complexity Dracula embodies outside the conventional landscape of films with which the vampire is typically associated. Focusing on Dracula and Dracula-type characters in film, anime, and literature from predominantly non-Anglo markets, this anthology offers unique perspectives that seek to ground depictions and experiences of Dracula within a larger political, historical, and cultural framework.

Japanese popular culture unifies fans from different countries and backgrounds. Its rich participatory culture is beyond any other and flourishes around comics (manga), animation (anime), games and music. Japanese storytelling showcases elaborate story worlds whose characters are branded on many products. The sub genres of Japanese pop-culture and the lingua franca of their audiences shape Western fandom. In this article, I scrutinize the global dynamic of manga. I specifically focus on the creation of fan manga (‘doujinshi’) and dress-up (‘cosplay’) as two migratory fan practices. The form and content of fan works, and the organizational structure behind them, varies intensely per country. If manga is an international language and style, where is its international fan identity located? In this article, I explore this uncharted territory through ethnographic views of diverse Western and Japanese fan sites where these creative practices emerge. This ethnographic overview is thus concerned with the heterogeneous make-up and social protocols of anime fandom.

Þessi ritgerð fjallar um Einar Þorstein Ásgeirsson, arkitekt, hönnuð og stærðfræðing, sem segja má að hafi verið eini geimaldararkitektinn í íslenskri hönnunarsögu. Í gegnum Einar Þorstein öðluðust Íslendingar bein tengsl við frjóustu hugsuði 20. og 21. aldar á sviði hönnunar og byggingarlistar. Einar var frumkvöðull á mörgum sviðum, til að mynda í rúm- og formfræði, léttbyggingum og burðarforma, tjald- og hvolfbygginga og síðast en ekki síst á sviði vistvænna lausna. Hugmyndaheimur Einars Þorsteins átti sér fá takmörk og hannaði hann allt frá geimbyggðum á reikistjörnunni Mars til barnaleikfanga. Hugmyndum Einars var þó oft fálega tekið og þær álitnar á jaðrinum. Segja má að ferill Einars Þorsteins hafi fengið endurnýjun lífdaga þegar hann kynntist listamanninum Ólafi Elíassyni skömmu fyrir aldarmótin 2000. Í þessari ritgerð verður fjallað um ævi og hugmyndaheim Einars Þorsteins og samstarf hans við listamanninn Ólaf Elíasson. Þá verður sjónum beint að verkum Ólafs sem bera þess merki að vera undir sterkum áhrifum formheims Einars Þorsteins. Þá verður fjallað um þá togstreitu sem birtist í samstarfi listamannanna út frá hugmyndum um hnattvæðingu og samtímaleika, og hvernig hún birtist með ólíkum hætti í verkum þeirra.

In the beginning of Roberto Bolaño’s novel 2666, three academics travel to Switzerland for a conference and while there decide to visit the residence of an artist named Edwin Johns.  The painter’s current home is a lunatic asylum and Johns is notorious for having cut off his painting hand, embalming it and attaching it to a self-portrait. When asked why he mutilated himself, he replies that he believes in investments, the flow of capital. The act’s madness and its linkage with capital is a preview of the madness that pervades the entire novel.  In Bolaño’s world, Johns and the lunatic asylum are metonymic for society.  The objectives of this paper are two-fold. The first is to examine the critiques which Bolaño makes about global investments and to show how the madness in 2666 is associated with economic neoliberalism. The second objective is to determine if Bolaño offers a solution and if so, to evaluate his solution against several philosophical and theological treatments for economic neoliberalism.

L'articolo discute le opere fondamentali del filosofo russo Aleksandr Dugin, in particolare per ciò che riguarda da una parte l’etnosociologia, vale a dire la ricostruzione genealogica della società dall’unità sociale di base (ethnos) fino alle società più complesse (narod, nazione, società globale) e alle loro dinamiche, dall’altra la filosofia politica, al fine di comprendere sia la sua posizione critica verso le istituzioni e i disequilibri del presente, sia gli scopi ideologici della sua proposta di una nuova teoria politica, in riferimento al rapporto con l’élite russa e alla sua vocazione imperialista.

O dossiê constitui uma consolidação do material existente sobre um “debate que não houve”, totalmente inútil no plano de minhas realizações intelectuais,. Tudo teve origem por um convite dos organizadores da série “Brasil Paralelo” na sequência de uma entrevista que realizaram comigo em 2016, que deu motivo a um segundo pedido de entrevista sobre o binômio “Globalização-globalismo”.

With changing norms marketing has started to play larger role on sales and has gained great importance in businesses. In addition, Business started to pursue for new marketing techniques that has more certain outcomes. Advertisers start to look for more creative techniques to reach consumer effectively. In order to distinguish brands signalize the need for advertising appeals on marketing strategies. In this thesis global and local advertisements will be compared according to advertising appeals they used. The aim of this study is to find out how use of appeals differs in global and local advertisements and the method for this study is discourse analysis based on television commercials displayed in 2015.

This Cambridge Element inaugurates the Cambridge Elements series in the Global Middle Ages: 40 titles over 5 years, with an open-ended remit, edited by Geraldine Heng and Susan Noakes.  The Global Middle Ages: An Introduction discusses how, when, and why I conceptualized a "Global Middle Ages," explains and analyses the terms deployed in studying, teaching, and researching a Global Middle Ages, and critically reflects on the issues that arise in the establishment of this relatively new field of academic endeavor. 

It considers key issues of vocabulary, chronology, and themes central to the conceptualization and theorization of the global in premodernity; treats the relationship of global premodernity to global modernity; and surveys a variety of approaches to the global in earlier and emergent scholarship.  This Element compares our current moment’s study of the global with preceding as well as ongoing programmatic studies such as world-systems theories and the teaching of world history and world literature in higher education today.

This introductory Element brings into focus the sustained importance of critical reflection and critical analysis, and promulgates a critical---not an additive---version of early global studies.

This article considers photographer and theorist Allan Sekula’s exhibition and book project, Fish Story (1989-1995), the first in an ongoing series of works by Sekula that explore the ocean as a key space of globalisation. In the light of these returns, the article frames the work as the pivotal articulation of Sekula’s effort to renew the terms of a realist art in the wake of the hegemony of postmodern culture of the 1980s, and as a key expression of an emergent shift from a culture of postmodernism to one of globalism.

As the most recent conflict the world facing with today Syrian War and Russian’s involvement in it is worth to examine in the light of many different international relations theories.  Here is the question: What reasons and foreign policy approaches push Russia to get involved in a conflict 2000 kilometers away?

We face a globalizing world beset by raging violence and deep national, religious and individual insecurities. ‘Globalization’ may be the catch-cry of our times, but the ‘War on Terror’ has given it a harder and more tragic resonance. In order to confront this development critically the book turns upon a matrix of contradictory phenomena—globalism, nationalism, and state-terror. These are phenomena that seem to defy understanding, at least in their strange intersections. Too many commentators still maintain the mythologies that globalization is predominantly a neo-liberal economic phenomenon; that nation-states are on the way out, and that terror is something that primarily comes from below. Global Matrix exposes those half-truths, though without simply turning them on their head. Half-truths have a habit of being just that—half true.

The book sets out to confront the problems of understanding with a dual emphasis on critically mapping the cultural politics of the present, and setting these phenomena in the context of deep continuities from the past. The two authors write independently but in continual dialogue as they attempt to answer four main questions. What is the cultural-political nature of contemporary globalization? En este fascinante testimonio, John Perkins relata su particular trayectoria personal, de servidor obediente del Imperio a defensor apasionado de los derechos de los oprimidos. Discretamente seleccionado por la Agencia Nacional de Seguridad estadounidense y puesto en la nómina de una firma internacional de consultoría, estuvo en Indonesia, Panamá, Ecuador, Colombia, Arabia Saudí, Irán y otros países estratégicamente importantes del planeta.
