Fodder provision in species-rich grasslands, i.e. herbage growth, proportion of leaf, and leaf and stem digestibility, is difficult to predict for short periods of time, such as between two defoliations or less. The value of two methods based on plant traits for evaluating these agronomic properties was examined. One method is based on plant trait measurements on the plant community (leaf dry matter content, plant height, flowering date); the other is on vegetation composition expressed as plant functional types (acquisitive versus conservative PFTs) established by measuring leaf dry matter content on pure grass stands. The experiment consisted of 18 fields with three different defoliation regimes (combinations of cutting and grazing) and two levels of fertilization. The aim of the study is to assess the growth and nutritional status of adolescents of the Shabar tribe of Orissa, India. There are no studies on the growth pattern of the Shabar tribe, one of the largest tribal communities of Orissa. Studies of other tribes have shown poor health status of their members. This cross-sectional study was carried out on 328 adolescents (149 boys and 179 girls), aged 10 to 18 years from Khurda and Cuttack districts of Orissa. Anthropometric measurements were taken to assess growth and nutritional status. Means, standard deviation and percentile curves were used to examine the pattern of growth, while t-test and 50th percentile values were used to compare the nutritional status with other studies. Trehalose is a disaccharide with a wide range of applications in the food industry. We recently proposed a strategy for trehalose production based on improved strains of the gram-positive bacterium Corynebacterium glutamicum. This microorganism synthesizes trehalose through two major pathways, OtsBA and TreYZ, by using UDP-glucose and ADP-glucose, respectively, as the glucosyl donors. In this paper we describe improvement of the UDP-glucose supply through heterologous expression in C. glutamicum of the UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase gene from Escherichia coli, either expressed alone or coexpressed with the E. coli ots genes (galU otsBA synthetic operon). The impact of such expression on trehalose accumulation and excretion, glycogen accumulation, and the growth pattern of new recombinant strains is described. The paper examines the causal relationship between FDI and economic growth by using an innovative econometric methodology to study the direction of causality between the two variables. We apply our methodology, based on the Toda-Yamamoto test for causality, to time-series data covering the period 1969-2000 for three developing countries, namely Chile, Malaysia and Thailand, all of them major recipients of FDI with a different history of macroeconomic episodes, policy regimes and growth patterns. Our empirical findings clearly suggest that it is GDP that causes FDI in the case of Chile and not vice versa, while for both Malaysia and Thailand, there is a strong evidence of a bi-directional causality between the two variables. The robustness of the above findings is confirmed by the use of a bootstrap test employed to test the validity of our results.
