Genetic counselors in the US assess disease risks by drawing on family histories, genetic tests, and patients’ racial, ethnic, national, or religious self-identifications. The bodily risks of kinship articulated by family histories can be defused by genetic tests that highlight the contingency of biological inheritance and decouple kinship from genetics. However, such tests, as well as self-identifying patients, also entwine genetic risk with older indicators of kinship: biologically understood race and ethnicity. Across these scales, counselors calculate relative risks to the future health of individuals, in the process measuring kinship as genealogical closeness, genetic dis/similarity, and biocultural race and ethnicity. As counselors personalize the universal promises of genomics at a biomedical nexus of risk and prophylaxis, they tap into anxieties about the changed natures of American kinship.

Resumen Abstract Objetivo principal: El objetivo de la presente investigación es identificar los fac-tores de riesgo sexual y su relación con la estructura familiar de la que forman parte los estudiantes universitarios según el grado que cursan. Metodología: Se aplicó un cuestionario a 220 alumnos de los dos títulos de grado de la Universidad de Alicante (España). Resultados principales: Los resultados muestran que el 70.1% de los estu-diantes se inició en la sexualidad entre los 16-18 años. El 95.5% ha utilizado méto-dos anticonceptivos en su primera relación sexual. Los estudiantes de enfermería recibieron la información sexual a través de los centros educativos y los estudiantes de Administración y Dirección de Empresas (ADE) la obtuvieron de los amigos. Conclusión principal: Se concluye que en la población universitaria siguen presentes conductas que conllevan riesgos para la salud, no encontrándose influenciados por la estructura familiar de origen. Actualmente, existe cierta disociación entre la infor-mación que reciben los estudiantes y las conductas inseguras que llevan a cabo. Palabras clave: Factores de Riesgo. Jóvenes Universitarios. A COMPARATIVE STUDY Objective: The objective of this investigation is identify the sexual risk factors and their relationship with the family structure which university students form part depending the degree they are studying. Methods: To 220 students of two degrees from the University of Alicante (Spain) were applied a questionnaire. Results: The results show that the 70'1% of the students began their sexual relationship among the years of 16-18. The 95'5% used contraceptive methods in their first sexual relationship. The sexual information was given nursing students from school and to the Administration and Direction of Business' students from friends. Conclusions: Conclude that behaviors which entail health risk are still present in the university population. These behaviors are not influenced by the family structure for origin. Nowadays , there is a certain dissociation between the sexual information that the students receive and the insecure behaviors that they carry out.

Mining companies often deliver various health interventions for respective mining enclaves yet, majority of these services often apply a top-down approach with limited community involvement. Thus, this paper explored communities' satisfaction of health interventions by the Newmont Ghana Gold Limited (NGGL) in Asutifi South and North Districts of Ghana. A descriptive cross-sectional and mixed-method study involving a convenience sample of 145 community members was conducted. Approximately, 60%, 52%, 51% and 52% of the respondents were respectively satisfied with dust suppression measures, health education/ awareness creation, malaria control programmes and provision of alternative sources of drinking water by the NGGL. While health promotion and prevention strategies have been helpful, these were far below the expectations of the community members. More importantly, the participants expected to be provided with modern health facilities and opportunity to participate in local institutions' decision-making process in the delivery of these services. We, therefore, recommend that the NGGL should intensify its efforts towards public health improvement in its enclaves as part of its corporate social responsibility.

HIV/AIDS has claimed millions of lives in the global workforce and continues to remain a threat to many businesses. An estimated 36.5 million of working people are living with HIV; the global workforce has lost 28 million people from AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic. In the absence of access to treatment, this number could grow to 74 million by 2015. The epidemic continues to affect the working population through absenteeism, sickness and death. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an obligation that corporates have toward their employees, community and society. A review and documentation of one such CSR by Johnson & Johnson (a multinational company) for HIV/AIDS in Africa is presented here. Johnson & Johnson Company is involved in numerous projects around the world to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The company is working to fight the spread of the disease and improve the quality of life for those living with the illness through various donations of its products and spons...

This study evaluated age and gender wise effects of Pollen Allergy on health followed by proposing options for the alternatives of Paper Mulberry. The economic and environmental costs and benefits of Paper mulberry and its alternative plants were also quantified. The annual benefits and costs of Paper Mulberry and its alternative plants were estimated through “The National Tree Benefits Calculator”. Health is a contested concept that has been defined in numerous ways. The media is extremely powerful in promoting health beliefs and in creating role models for contemporary people. The ways in which health is defined or understood can have wide-ranging implications and can have an impact on issues such as health promotion or health literacy. Health presentation in the media has a significant social impact because this type of message is important in changing people's beliefs, attitudes and behaviours relating to health and in promoting health-related knowledge among the target audience. The present volume provides an interdisciplinary and multicultural contemporary approach to the controversial link between medicine and media. The authors that have contributed to this volume analyse the media and medicine from different perspectives and different countries (USA, UK, Portugal, Turkey, Nigeria, Taiwan, Mexico, Estonia, Romania), thus offering a re-positioning of the study of media and medicine. The new perspectives offered by this volume will be of interest to any health communication or media studies student or academic since they bring to light new ideas, new methodologies and new results.
