Malíř Viktor Foerster založil na počátku 20. století v prostorách kláštera u sv. Jiří na Pražském hradě mozaikářskou dílnu. Ačkoliv je považován za prvního českého mozaikáře, jeho dílo dosud není nijak uceleně zhodnoceno. Pohled na několik desítek Foersterových mozaikových realizací je skládán až v poslední době díky terénnímu průzkumu a archivním rešerším. Průzkum písemných pramenů zprostředkoval pevná data z Foersterova osobního i pracovního života, která vyvracejí v literatuře tradované omyly a rozšiřují pohled na jeho tvorbu. Úvod studie ozřejmuje původ zájmu o specifickou techniku, Foersterovy názory na výtvarné působení mozaiky, italské školení a vazby na okruh Beuronské umělecké školy. Následuje stručný přehled zakázek v Čechách, na Moravě i v zahraničí. Zmiňována jsou díla svázaná s profánní i sakrální architekturou, sepulkrální tvorba a restaurátorské zakázky, přičemž je pozornost věnována i zaniklým a nerealizovaným mozaikám. / At the onset of the 20th century the painter Viktor Foerster founded a mosaic workshop within the monastery of St. George at the Prague castle. Although he is considered to be the first Czech mosaic maker, his work has yet not been comprehensively evaluated. The view on several tens of his mosaic realisations is being recently composed thanks to the field and archive research. The survey of the written evidence provided dates of Foerster’s personal and professional life, which disprove the errors published in literature, and broaden the scope of his work. The introduction of the study enlightens the origins of the interest of the specific technic, Foerster’s opinions on the visual art of a mosaic, the Italian study and the connection with the Beuron art school. A brief overview of the contracts in Bohemia, Moravia and abroad follows. Works connected with profane and sacred architecture are mentioned, as well as sepulchral work and restoration contracts, and attention is also paid to destroyed or unrealised mosaics.
