Historic Pigments and Binding Mediums

Questo articolo propone una ricostruzione di 40 sequenze di velature storiche, presenti in buona parte delle scuole europee tra XV e XVIII secolo. Lo scopo principale è quello di documentare visivamente l'aspetto delle sovrapposizioni cromatiche utilizzando pigmenti e coloranti storici che, molto spesso, soffrono un degrado tale da non consentire l'osservazione nel loro aspetto originario. Oltre a questo, si intende mostrare quanto queste e le velature possano alterare la percezione del colore soggiacente. Si è quindi fatto ricorso alle fonti e all'esperienza di laboratorio, al fine di suggerire una serie di sequenze di sovrapposizioni cromatiche tra le più consuete, per poi riprodurle su una tela preparata tramite l'uso di pigmenti storici e coloranti agglutinati con olio secondo la principale tecnica pittorica sviluppata nel periodo citato. Introduzione Fino al XVI secolo gli artisti seguono la moda fiamminga dipingendo con una pellicola pittorica dall'apparenza smaltata e delicata, ottima per la pittura su tavola, nella quale diversi strati di colore molto sottili interagiscono tra di loro e, raramente, sono previste delle applicazioni monocrome di un solo strato. Quando la tela comincia a farsi strada come supporto il procedimento resta il medesimo e solamente tra la fine del XVI secolo e l'inizio del XVII secolo nella pittura europea la pittura è a corpo. Ciononostante, le velature continuano a essere ampiamente utilizzate come soluzione tecnico-pittorica sino al XIX secolo, quando le nuove tendenze favoriscono la ricerca di altri effetti visivi tramite pennellate molto più dense. Questo aspetto è legato allo sviluppo dei colori industriali, molto più coprenti e spessi, che permettono, allo stesso tempo, un'asciugatura più rapida e una più ampia tavolozza. Le velature perdono il loro significato originale di modulazione dei colori e, anche se sono state utilizzate sino ai giorni nostri, è certo che dal XIX secolo la loro applicazione è poco frequente se non rara. Il termine "velando" si ritrova per la prima volta nel trattato De veri precetti della pittura, di Gianbattista Armenini, anche se, come si vedrà, il concetto è precedente. Armenini afferma: Quivi gli esperti adoperano le lore mestiche con gran sparmio, anzi, come si è detto, non coprendo, ma velando sottilmente quel che è sotto, ne fanno rimaner dolcissime e morbide le carni e i panni, e ciò è cosi agevole che vi si può ritornare più volte in un istante, ed ivi dargli tutta quella perfezione che un uomo eccelente possiede […]. (Armenini, [1586], 1820, p.182) Altri autori, come ad esempio Francisco Pacheco o Antonio Palomino, indicano questa pratica come 'baños'. Definire esattamente cosa sia esattamente una velatura non è semplice: il termine designa un qualsiasi strato di colore translucido o trasparente che si colloca al di sopra di uno strato inferiore, con l'intenzione di modificare il colore soggiacente, o per dargli una nuova sfumatura, per scurire, schiarire, intensificare la saturazione, o formare un colore composto. Fino al XIX secolo la relativa limitazione della tavolozza obbliga i pittori all'uso di effetti di trasparenza cromatica che permettono loro di ottenere dei toni più complessi di quelli che forniscono i pigmenti usati singolarmente. In realtà, più che di velature, spesso si tratta di sovrapposizioni cromatiche consuete previste dall'esecuzione pittorica. Già Leonardo, nel suo trattato di pittura, dedica il capitolo 201 125

This study gives an account of the organic components (binders and coatings) found in the polychromy of some fragmented architectural reliefs from the Palace of Apries in Memphis, Egypt (26th Dynasty, ca. 589‑568 BCE). A column capital and five relief fragments from the collections of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen were chosen for examination, selected because of their well‑preserved polychromy. Samples from the fragments were first investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to screen for the presence of organic materials and to identify the chemical family to which these materials belong (proteinaceous, polysaccharides or lipid). Only the samples showing the potential presence of organic binder residues were further investigated using gas chromatog‑ raphy with mass spectrometry detection (GC–MS) targeting the analysis towards the detection and identification of compounds belonging to the chemical families identified by FTIR. The detection of polysaccharides in the paint layers on the capital and on two of the fragments indicates the use of plant gums as binding media. The interpretation of the sugar profiles was not straightforward so botanical classification was only possible for one fragment where the results of analysis seem to point to gum arabic. The sample from the same fragment was found to contain animal glue and a second protein material (possibly egg). While the presence of animal glue is probably ascribable to the binder used for the ground layer, the second protein indicates that either the paint layer was bound in a mixture of different binding materials or that the paint layer, bound in a plant gum, was then coated with a proteinaceous material. The surface of two of the investigated samples was partially covered by translucent waxy materials that were identified as a synthetic wax (applied during old conservation treatments) and as beeswax, respectively. It is possible that the beeswax is of ancient origin, selectively applied on yellow areas in order to create a certain glossiness or highlight specific elements.

In this work we provide results of three analytical methods, e.g. micro-RAMAN, micro-FTIR and SEM/EDS, which were applied for the identification of pigments in 19th century icons for preservation and restoration purposes. These icons are stored in the Saint George church at the Asvestochori village near Thessaloniki, N. Greece. The two icons depict the “Palpation of Thomas” and St.Dionisios, respectively, and were constructed between 1812 and 1825 to decorate the altar of the church. These icons are works of folk art and their iconographic characteristics are affected by the contemporaneous historic spirit. Thus, the saints are depicted in simple shapes, primary colors are dark and locally mixed with brighter tones to express a hint of joy. Icons are in good conservation status, they exhibit usage and time ravages to their paint layers and wooden bodies. Representative samples, of the pigments, not exceeding dimensions of approximately 2x3x1 mm, from both icons were obtained. These samples were studied using the non-destructive technique of micro-Raman spectroscopy for the identification of inorganic pigments. Micro-FTIR spectroscopy was implemented as a complementary technique for the identification purposes. Finally, where coatings of the binder material on the pigments were hampering the spectroscopy analyses the scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) technique was selectively used. The analytical techniques micro-RAMAN and micro-FTIR were performed in the frame of the “Programme of Management and Conservation of Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage Objects” at the University Ecclesiastical Academy of Thessaloniki. The SEM/EDS study was applied at the School of Sciences of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The main purpose of this study is to improve our scientific knowledge on the pigments which were used at iconography during early 19th century in the broader area of Thessaloniki, by examining inorganic and organic components and when possible to apply these materials in the conservation science.

خانه ي تاريخي سوكياس، در محله ي تبريزيهاي اصفهان واقع شده و بر طبق مطالعات انجام شده در دوره ي شاه عباس دوم صفوي ساخته شده است . يكي از مهم ترين تزيينات معماري اين بنا، ديوارنگاره هاي تاريخي آن است . لايه رنگ در ديوارنگاره به طور معمول شامل دو جزء رنگدانه، بست و ساير افزودني ها است . شناسايي بست با استفاده از طيف بيني زير قرمز از آن جهت كه مقدار بست ناچيز است و داده هاي طيفي مرتبط با آن، هنگام آناليز تحت تأثير هم پوشاني ناشي از وجود رنگدانه ها و ديگر اجزاء لايه هاي ديوارنگاره واقع مي شود، كاري دشوار است . از اين رو در اين پژوهش با هدف حذف اثر اين عوامل مداخله گر تعداد ي نمونه ساخته شد و از ديوارنگاره خانه ي تاريخي سوكياس نمونه برداري شد . طيف نمونه ها با استفاده شد . زرده ي تخم مرغ به عنوان بست نمونه هاي SIMCA تهيه و براي پردازش داده ها نيز از تكنيك كمومتريكس FTIR استفاده از روش تاريخي خانه ي سوكياس شناسايي شد . با توجه به نتايج به دست آمده، مي توان استفاده از روشهاي كمومتريكس را در شناسايي بست نقاشي هاي ديواري كارآمد دانست.
