Est-il possible de revendiquer le réalisme en philosophie sans contradiction ? Cet article envisage la question à partir de la controverse entre Étienne Gilson et les néo-thomistes pendant les années 1930, avec en perspective les débats contemporains autour du "réalisme spéculatif".

This article offers an overview of the 19th-century Roman School, which had a major impact of Roman Catholic theological discourse during the period. In addition to exploring questions of periodization, major themes, and figures of the School, the study traces the impact of this movement in subsequent eras. As a whole, the article provides an introduction to the Roman School and attempts to demonstrate that the School was no less important than more well known movements such as baroque scholasticism, Gallicanism, Jansenism, Neo-Thomism, or the Ressourcement Movement for shaping the intellectual contours of modern Catholicism.

"The history" of medieval philosophy does not exist. Rather, there is a history of the different ways of interpreting the evolution of ideas in the medieval period, each of these different ways being to a considerable extent a function of the interpreter's own philosophical presuppositions. Until about 25 years ago, the dominant paradigm in the interpretation of medieval philosophy was Neoscholasticism. More recently a change of paradigm has occurred in the study of medieval philosophy, which seems to be read by more and more researchers from a "postmodern" angle. This change of paradigm allows us to see facets in the philosophical movement in the Middle Ages which had been eclipsed by the Neoscholastic perspective.

The question of analogy – fundamental for all neoscholastics, from Gilson to Maritain, finds its consecration in 1932 with Erich Przywara’s famous Analogia entis. In the wake of Pryzwara’s influence, analogy toook on a decisive role in Edith Stein’s thinking. However, in describing the phenomenological dialectic between finite being and eternal being, Stein ascribes what could be called a « personal » dimension to the analogy
of being. This means a relation between two « I am » : the human and creatural « I am » and the divine « I am ». The original analogia entis is thus for Stein a relation between
two persons.

This piece, published in the year 2000, is an attempt to provide an overview of research in medieval philosophy in the twentieth century, identifying the main currents and approaches. (The "two souls" mentioned in the title are a speculative and a historico-critical one.) In its last pages, the article outlines some desiderata for the future development of the field, emphasizing the need to understand the intellectual life of the Middle Ages as grounded in social reality.

The author analyzes the rise of the theory of knowledge in the Catholic intellectual culture of the period between 1840s and 1920s. This period can be divided into two stages of comparable significance: the stage of the Neo-Scholasticism (1840‒1870) and the stage of a proper Neo-Thomism (1870‒1920). It is further possible to distinguish three forms in the development of these stages, which are examined from an epistemological perspective. The first form of epistemology, characteristic of the 1840s-1870s, and associated with the names of G. Sanseverino, M. Liberatore, J. Balmes, J. Kleutgen, is characterized by a traditional scholastic model of understanding as unity of the three intellectual operations. However, this model is complicated by a differentiated analysis of individual functions and moments of understanding, associated with Wolffianism. The next form of epistemology was formed in 1880s-1910s and was characterized by an attempt to return “back to Aquinas”, as well as by the formation of the Neo-Thomism, enshrined in the “24 Thomistic theses”. In the doctrine of cardinal D. Mercier, the realistic epistemology of Acquinas came into contact with modern philosophy and psychology. The third stage was associated with J. Marechal and his predecessors (1910‒1920), who proposed a new understanding of the theory of knowledge. This new approach inherited the Kantian view of cognition but proposed a revision of the critical method itself (in the writings of J. Marechal’s). The critical method underwent a reconstruction on the basis of the doctrine of the four causes of Aristotle and Aquinas.

A publicação periódica de perdões gerais de desertores em editais impressos destinados a ter a mais ampla fama, feita sobretudo em tempos críticos, como os anos finais do século XVIII, foi o ponto de partida para a investigação sobre as dificuldades socialmente inscritas que as autoridades régias sempre encontravam para a formação e manutenção de uma força armada de meados do século XVII ao início do século XIX. Este domínio, que se poderia considerar porventura marginal, revelou-se um ponto de observação privilegiado para a análise dos limites práticos do exercício do poder e levou-me à enunciação de que a ação régia era guiada pelos preceitos do que nomeei «poder pseudopastoral», assim designado pelo contraste com os métodos de aplicação da lei, considerada esta (na sua letra) como uma regra genérica, aplicável aos prevaricadores das regras escritas sem conside-ração pela sua particularidade. Na sua execução, o direito encontrar-se-ia muito próximo da casuística e, através do caminho da interpretação, seria usado pelos juízes de forma semelhante. A autoridade do rei era, por definição consagrada, benévola, o que foi repetidamente afirmado na doutrina. O rei era um «pai» que sempre receberia os seus «filhos pródigos», os que reconheciam a desobediência e dela se arrependiam. Mas, em reserva, permanecia um «pai» que pode-ria castigar, de forma exemplar e espetacular, os delitos considerados de extrema gravidade. Através da benevolência própria do perdão, os reis reproduziam a atitude que era devida aos homens-no-mundo, de acordo com a orientação da dou-trina dominante na Igreja cristã. Aos homens não poderia ser exigido mais do que aquilo que a sua «natureza» permitia. Sendo seres fracos, incapazes de um comportamento virtuoso e constante, não poderiam ser punidos a partir de um critério de «rigor» (o termo é da época) e invariavelmente aplicado, sem consideração pelas circunstâncias, aos que transgrediam por causa dessa sua fraqueza natural como aos que o faziam por malevolência. Esta oposição, entre a fraqueza e a malevolência, sendo central no discurso que classificamos como religioso, pode aparecer também no quadro estri-tamente militar para diferenciar o modo de penalização dos atos de indis-ciplina como, por excelência, eram os da referida deserção endémica. Este artigo busca discutir não somente como medievalistas brasileiros de orientação neotomista entenderam a atualidade do pensamento medieval, mas também como analisaram e se apropriaram de elementos da obra de Tomás de Aquino com o intuito de apresentá-los, de maneira ahistórica, como uma alternativa aos projetos políticos então em disputa. A presente reflexão se apresenta como um panorama amplo, tomando como seu ponto de partida a fundação da primeira faculdade de filosofia do Brasil em 1908, chegando até os princípios do século XXI. Essa análise perpassa as reflexões de Charles Sentroul, Leonardo Van Acker, Leonel Franca, Henrique Claudio de Lima Vaz e Ivanaldo Santos. Para tanto, parte-se dos preceitos da história da história da filosofia, a fim de ressaltar como determinados contextos sociopolíticos influenciaram a interpretação do pensamento medieval.
