Hsiung-nu History

Türk tarih yazımı için Çin kaynakları vazgeçilmezdir. Özellikle Türk tarihinin tarih öncesi dönemleri ve ilk çağları için paha biçilmez malumata Çin kaynakları arasında yapılan gezintilerle rahatlıkla ulaşılabilir. Yazılı kültürü komşuları kadar efektif bir şekilde meydana getiremeyen Türklere karşın, Çinliler yerleşik yaşamın avantajlarını kullanarak kaleme aldıkları raporlar ve kayıtlar vasıtasıyla oluşturdukları devlet arşivi sayesinde geleceğe ışık tutacak şekilde tarihe not düşmüşlerdir.

ÖZET Günümüzde ve geçmişte hemen her devlet ve toplumda olduğu gibi, Türklerin kurduğu en güçlü devletlerden biri olan Asya Hun Devleti'nde de halk ve devlet çocuklarına özel önem vermişlerdir. Fakat Hunlarda çocuklar en çok ekonomik ve askeri faaliyetlerde rol üstlenmişlerdir. Bu faaliyetler daha çok gelecekte yapacakları işler ile ilgilidir. Hun ekonomisinin en önemli temellerinden birisi Çin'den iktisadi fayda sağlamaktır. Çin ile alışveriş yapılmış, Çin zaman zaman vergiye bağlanmış, bazen Çin malları yağma edilmiştir. Çin'den iktisadi faydanın sağlanmasında en önemli rolü, Hun ordusu oynamıştır. Çin kaynaklarına göre koyun sırtına binerek biniciliğe başlayan Hunlar, çocukluktan itibaren tilki, tavşan gibi hayvanları avlayarak nişancılık talimlerine başlamışlardır. Küçük yaşlardan itibaren asker gibi yetişen Hunlar, yetişkinlik çağına gelip asker olduklarında usta birer binici ve nişancı oluyorlardı. Bu özelliklere, üstün özelliklere sahip Hun atı ile Hun madencilerinin ürettiği kılıç, hançer, koşum takımları gibi kaliteli savaş aletleri de eklenince ortaya, karşı konulması güç, oldukça kuvvetli bir ordu çıkmış oluyordu. İşte askerler yedi yaşından itibaren talimlere başlayarak yetiştiriliyordu. Aynı şekilde bazı çocuklar da zanaat öğrenmeleri için madencilikle uğraşmaya başlıyorlardı. Bunun dışında Hun toplumunda kız çocukları da küçük yaşlardan itibaren anneleri ile ekonomiye katkıda bulunmaya, zanaat öğrenmeye başlıyorlardı. Kız çocukları hayvancılık faaliyetlerinde, hayvan bakımı, süt sağımı gibi işlerde annelerine yardım ediyorlardı. Hun kız çocuklarının esasen en önemli ekonomik faaliyeti dokumacılık olmuştur. Hemen her Hun kız çocuğu, genç kızlık çağına geldiğinde usta birer dokumacı oluyordu. Bugün, sayıları az da olsa, gördüğümüz bazı Hun dokuma örnekleri, bu üstün beceriyi gözler önüne sermektedir.  Arş. Gör. Kişilerin, kurumların ya da devletlerin birbirleri arasında yaptığı alım satım olarak tanımlanan ticaretin tarihi neredeyse insanlık tarihi kadar eskidir. Asya Hun Devleti'nin tarih sahnesine çıktığı yıllara gelindiğinde ticaret yöntemleri nispeten gelişmeye başlamıştı. Asya Hun Devleti ve Çin Han Devleti, karşılıklı ticaret yapan her devlet gibi birbirlerinin ürettiği mallara ihtiyaç duymuşlardır. Bu ticarette Hunlar öncelikli olarak tahıl ürünlerine ihtiyaç duymuşlardır. Çin'in temel ihtiyacı ise hayvansal ürünler ve stratejik bir mal olan attı. Fakat ekonomik yapılarının istikrarsızlığı sebebiyle Hunların Çin mallarına olan ihtiyacı çok fazlaydı. Dolayısıyla bu ticaret için Hunlar daha istekli olan taraftı. Savaş dönemlerinde bile bireyler, ticareti devam ettirmek için gayret göstermişlerdir. Öyle ki Hun Devleti'nin zayıflayıp bölündüğü dönemlerde bile iki devlet arasında ticaret yapıldığını gösteren kayıtlar mevcuttur.
                                                                      Abstract
The history of trade that is defined as the purchase and sell that people, institutions or states do among each other is almost as old as the history of human beings,. By the years when the Hsiung-nu State came to the stage of history, the trading methods started to develop relatively. The Hsiung-nu State and the Chinese Han State needed goods produced by each other, like any other states trading. In this trade, Hsiung-nu primarily needed grain products. China's basic need was animal products and horse as a strategic good. However, the need of Hsiung-nu for the Chinese goods was too much due to the instability of their economic structures.

We learn the words belonging to the language of Xiongnus (Asian Huns), who played an important role in the history of the world, through the works written by the Chinese who developed political, military and economic relations with this community. Some of the words recorded by the Chinese about their language contain the horse-related terms and certain animal names. The horse was the best option of mobility for nomadic communities such as the Huns and the Scythians. Much importance was given to horse in nomadic cultures. So, the fact that the horse-related terms are mentioned in the Chinese historical sources is not accidental. The earlier horse-related terms used by the Turks are present in the language of the Xiongnus but we find the oldest traces of the same terms used in Turkic in the language of the Scythians.

This study discusses the explanations of the words mentioned in the written sources related to the horse-related terms and animal names belonging to the language of the Xiongnus and will touch upon the connection between Turkic and Scythian.

A HSIUNG-NU CITY ON THE SHORELINE OF BAIKAL LAKE
The basic needs of human has never been changed since he first set foot on earth. Nutrition and shelter needs are the most important ones of these needs. Humankind that made hunting and gathering at first, then started stockbreeding and farming. With increase of population, stockbreeding activity has became not enough for human nutrition. Therefore, agricultural activity has emerged. Agriculture is also necessary for breeding the animals. Consequently, a society cannot meet all requirements with just one economic activity. Nomadic societies also made agricultural activities. But this activity, of course, has not been made plentiful as much as settled societies. Because settled life is necessary for making agriculture. With the samples today, especially in ancient ages, societies that make stockbreeding should be settled. Here, due to this contradiction, a part can be considered as minority in Hsiung-nu society, has made agriculture.
I have pointed out that societies that make agriculture, should be settled. Because economic source, “soil”, doesn’t change place. Furthermore, soil needs care and farmer should protect his land. However, transition to settled life that appeared with agriculture, has not occured abruptly. In my paper I will discuss more details about this process that has direct proportion with progress of agriculture and increase of agricultural activities. Although Central Asia is a very large geographical area, agricultural areas are limited in comparison with this largeness. One of these areas is Lake Baikal region. This region that Turks owned almost all periods of ancient and middle age, had great economic and strategic importance. Agricultural activites were made since ancient times due to flatness of lake region and suitability of lake water for watering agricultural areas.
Hsiung-nu society was one the societies that made agriculture here. There are lots of archaeological finds that prove these areas and agricultural zones here belong to Hsiung-nu. One of the details that I will discuss in my paper are about these findings. In accordance with agricultural activities made here, existence of settled life is highly probable. Here, with this aim, a city that was found so close to agricultural zones, by reason of archaelogical excavations made in the late 1980’s. Though a settlement like this city is defined as village or small town today, when it is compared with region and Hsiung-nu population in that period, this settlement should be accepted as a somewhat large city. My paper will focus on this city, agricultural activities and settled life of Hsiung-nu.

                                          BAYKAL GÖLÜ KIYISINDA BİR HUN ŞEHRİ
                                                                      ÖZET

İnsanın temel ihtiyaçları, yeryüzüne ilk ayak bastığı günden beri değişmemiştir. Bu ihtiyaçların başında beslenme ve barınma gelir. İlk olarak avcılık ve toplayıcılık yapan insanoğlu, ilerleyen yıllarda hayvancılık yapmaya başlamıştır. Nüfusun artmasıyla beraber hayvancılık faaliyeti insanların beslenmesi için yetmemeye başlamıştır. Bu sebeple tarım faaliyeti ortaya çıkmıştır. Tarım aynı zamanda hayvanların beslenmesi için de gereklidir. Dolayısıyla bir toplum tek bir ekonomik faaliyetle tüm ihtiyaçlarını karşılayamaz. Konargöçer dediğimiz toplumlar da tarımla uğraşmışlardır. Ancak bu uğraş, tabii ki yerleşik toplumlar kadar yoğun yapılmamıştır. Çünkü tarım yapmak için yerleşik yaşam şarttır. Günümüzde de örnekleri olmakla beraber, özellikle eskiçağlarda hayvancılık yapan toplumlar konargöçer olmak zorundaydı. İşte bu çelişkiden dolayı Hun toplumunda azınlık sayılabilecek bir kesim tarımla uğraşmıştır.
Tarım yapan toplumların yerleşik yaşamak zorunda olduklarını belirttik. Çünkü ekonomik kaynak, yani toprak, yer değiştirmez. Ayrıca toprakla sürekli ilgilenmek ve toprağa sahip çıkmak gerekir. Ancak tarımla beraber ortaya çıkan yerleşik hayata geçiş bir anda olmamıştır. Tarımın ilerlemesi ve daha fazla yapılmasıyla doğru orantılı olan bu sürece çalışmamızın detaylarında değineceğiz.
Çok geniş bir coğrafya olmasına rağmen Orta Asya’da tarım yapılabilen alanlar bu büyüklüğe göre sınırlıdır. Bu alanlardan biri de Baykal Gölü civarıdır. Türklerin eski ve ortaçağın hemen her döneminde sahip oldukları bu bölge hem stratejik hem de ekonomik olarak büyük bir öneme sahip olmuştur. Göl civarının genelde düzlük olması ve göl suyunun tarım sahalarının sulanması için uygun oluşu sebebiyle çok eskiden beri bu sahalarda tarım yapılmıştır.
Burada tarım yapan toplumlardan biri de Hunlardı. Bu bölgenin ve buradaki tarım sahalarının Hunlara ait olduğunu gösteren pek çok arkeolojik buluntu mevcuttur. Çalışmamızda değineceğimiz detaylardan biri de bu buluntulardır. Bu bölgede tarım yapıldığına göre yerleşik hayatın var olması da kuvvetle muhtemeldir. İşte bu amaçla 1980’lerin sonlarında bölgede yapılan arkeolojik kazılar neticesinde tarım sahalarının çok yakınında bir şehir bulunmuştur. Bu şehrin büyüklüğü bugün köy veya küçük bir kasaba olarak kabul edilse de o dönemki Hun ve bölge nüfusu ile kıyaslandığında bu yerleşimi büyükçe bir şehir olarak kabul etmek gerekir. Çalışmamızda bu şehir ve Hunların yerleşik hayatı ile tarım faaliyetleri üzerinde durulacaktır.

Монография посвящена истории взаимодействия с окружающей средой кочевых народов Центральной Азии: хунну, сяньби, жуаньжуаней, древних тюрков, уйгуров, кыргызов, киданей, монголов с III в. до н.э. по XVI в. н.э.
Исследование нацелено на малоизученные как в отечественной, так и в мировой науке вопросы адаптации материальной и духовной культуры кочевых народов к сложным природно-климатическим условиям. Рассмотрение проблемы с двух методологических платформ – гуманитарной и естественнонаучной – позволило существенно расширить спектр исследуемых вопросов и найти ряд новых решений. На большом фактическом материале показана специфика кочевого скотоводства как основы жизнеобеспечения номадов. Освещены охота, земледелие и градостроительство кочевников. Обсуждается роль религиозного фактора в природопользовании и отношении людей к природе, много внимания уделяется идеологическим аспектам кочевых
государств.
Книга рассчитана как на специалистов – кочевниковедов,
историков, этнологов, так и на широкую читательскую аудито-
рию, интересующуюся историей кочевников Центральной Азии.

"A new look at the past of the Eurasian steppe peoples" is a review of the book "The Elite in the history of ancient and medieval peoples of Eurasia" (Barcul 2015, 330 p.), ed. by P.K. Dashkovsky, It is a collective work written in Russian and containing many new contributions on this subject.

As it is known, today Turkic languages are divided into 3 main large dialects like Oghuz, Qarluq, Qipchaq and relatively small dialects such as Chuvash, Yakut (Saha) and Southern Siberia. Each or most of these dialects are the followers of the language of the ancient Turkic – “the language of the Orkhon-Yenisey inscriptions”, i.e. according to some Turkologists, they are the directly follower of the Common Turkic, and some of them different from these languages. Especially, this is very obvious in languages of Chuvash and in language of Volga Bulgarians of the Middle ages, for them the terms of “the followers of proto-Turkic language” or “a branch of the Hun language” are widely accepted. In this article, the terms “proto-Turkic” or “Hun language” the authors try to analyze the questions what lies the behind these terms and why Altaic scholars or Turkologists came to conclusion that the aforementioned dialects are considered to be Proto-Turkic.

Tax is defined as the cash money that the state collects from public to carry out
public services today. Before the money economy developed, the state collected the tax by
taking the share of the products produced. Hsiung-nu tax system was like this. However,
since the economy is largely based on animal husbandry, high rates of taxes have not
been collected. Because animal products could be quickly deteriorated. In addition, it
was both meaningless and economically difficult for the public, rulers and nobles take
large numbers of livestock as taxes. For this reason, the taxes collected in the Hsiung-nu
were not high.
The unstable economy of the Hsiung-nu needed Chinese goods. Livestock-based
economy always needs agricultural products. The way to ensure this was producing
agricultural products or buy these products from China by trade, looting and taking
taxes. The Hsiung-nu have always preferred to lay China under contribution instead of

fighting China with a wise policy. Thus, they have strengthened the weak points in their
economies. At the same time, the demand of the executives and the nobles for luxury
products, especially the demand for silk and wine, was covered by laying China under
contribution.
Chinese written sources have called the taxes given Hsiung-nu as gifts. Although it
is not true to define the tax given as a gift in the period when the Hsiung-nu are strong,
the products given in the periods when the Hsiung-nu are weakened and committed to
China, can be called gift. In this system strongs has set the rules.
