My paper focuses on the relationship between religious studies and literature in the thought of Vittorio Macchioro, author of Zagreus, a well-known study on orphism, based on a peculiar interpretation of the frescos of Villa Item in Pompei. His theoretical research, which was deeply rooted on the cultural ad spiritual European crisis of the Twentieth Century, intended to seize the irrational core of the religious, seen as the last chance for a personal and collective regeneration. Certain of his role of intellectual and prophet at once, like a new Orpheus, he devoted his entire existence to literature, which he interpreted as the more effective means to provoke an experience of mystical communion with God. Nevertheless, Macchioro was too lucid to free his mystical inspiration, and yet too lost to be clear in his speculation, and, at the end, he failed to reach a real communication of such an irrational and irreductible experience.

While some Italian poets could often be accused of offering an empty and rhetorical conception of nationhood, others have produced a more complex and critical view of Italian national identity. By carefully reconstructing the poetical representation of Italy, in terms of a collective feeling towards the country rather than recurring themes, this essay aims to highlight the mutually incompatible attitudes of Italian poets towards their native land: on the one hand there is a pompous glorification of Italy, while on the other there is a search for a deeper meaning in the concepts of nation and nationhood.

Во второй половине XIX в. страны Южной Европы переживали период активной экономической, социально-политической и культурной модернизации, призванной преодолеть последствия длительной стагнации в ряде областей. В Италии положение отличалось большей динамичностью (сравнительно, например, со странами Пиренейского полуострова), а настроение политических и интеллектуальных элит — большим оптимизмом в связи с успешным осуществлением Рисорджименто. Однако и там присутствовало понимание, что единство нации ещё не стало свершившимся фактом, что после того, как «сделана Италия», предстояло ещё «сделать итальянцев»; правящие круги осознавали также заметную социально-экономическую отсталость страны и недостаточность военно-политической мощи для обеспечения внешнеполитических, и в частности, колониальных амбиций новой нации (что должно было привести к острой конкуренции с более развитыми державами). В формирующихся в этот период научных дисциплинах, определяемых как этнография, этнология, демология, социальная и культурная антропология, изучение народных традиций и т. п., возникают специфические черты, отличающие ситуацию в странах Южной Европы от положения в англосаксонском мире, во Франции или германоязычных государствах. Эта специфика отражает ориентацию на поиск и утверждение прежде всего собственной национальной идентичности и проявляется в таких особенностях, как единство данной научной дисциплины (в отличие от строгого разделения на изучение населения внеевропейских территорий и исследование собственного народа в Британии, Германии и др.), обращение ведущих этнологов (от Питре до Лория) к изучению собственной страны, особое место, которое занимает в их исследованиях тема народа, популярность лишь определённых научных теорий и парадигм и слабое распространение прочих (таких, как эволюционизм, функционализм), характеризующих взгляды их коллег в других странах.

Italianness created from the pleasure of (using) your mother tongue. the past and the future in Michele Mari novels-michele mari, who debuted towards the end of the 80s of the 20th century, has written prose, poetry and drama and is considered to be one of the classics of literature. His name is very often mentioned together with such famous writers as gadda and Consolo. Already his literary debut showed him in opposition to the contemporary style and themes that ruled the literature. When it comes to those two aspects of a literary work, mari uses a baggage of literary tradition, both Italian and European, without limiting it only to the postmodern technique of quote and reference. The tradition in his works is used in a creative way and is converted into a matter which allows for an original interpretation of the contemporary times. This article aims at showing selected linguistic and thematic elements which are transformed in this way in the first three novels of the author.

What does it mean to be Italian in 2020? How do young adults, the aging, members of the LGBTQ community, migrants, and second-generation Italians negotiate and construct their identities in Italy today? More specifically, what are the personal histories of these individuals and groups in a nation where ideologies of an imagined homogeneity persist, yet day-to-day, lived experiences shore up visions of a “modern,” multifaceted Italy?

Building on these questions, this course will examine the increasing presence, participation, and visibility of traditionally marginalized persons in Italy. Following a historical introduction that gives context to the Unification and subsequent nation-building projects in Italy, ITAL 295 draws on an archive of interdisciplinary texts of multiple mediums (visual, auditory, etc.) to illustrate conventions, trends, and exceptions of be(com)ing Italian in 2020.

La piazza italiana rappresenta un tratto peculiare non solo delle città ma anche della cultura, dello stile di vita e della società italiane, tra patrimonio artistico, luogo di ritrovo, palcoscenico per (auto)rappresentazioni. Nell'immediato dopoguerra, alcune delle piazze più significative d'Italia sono protagoniste di cortometraggi documentari di diverso genere, ognuno dei quali sottolinea una sfaccettatura di questo elemento basilare dell'identità nazionale attraverso la rimediazione del moderno medium cinematografico.

Les articles présentés dans ce volume analysent les modalités selon lesquelles s’élabore la construction de l’identité collective et individuelle en Italie.Les trois premières contributions traitent de la question de l’« italianité » comme forme de l’identité collective. Aujourd’hui, les projets de partage du territoire invitent à rechercher les facteurs culturels et symboliques de la cohésion nationale. Mythes fondateurs et lieux de mémoire alimentent un nouveau discours idéologique sur la nation, qui s’accompagne aussi d’un débat sur l’Europe. À l’opposé, d’autres communautés de la péninsule se distinguent par leur culture propre et par leurs traditions.Dans le domaine littéraire, la question de l’identité marque les écrivains et s’inscrit au cœur de leurs œuvres. Le Confessioni d’un Italiano d’Ippolito Nievo, l’œuvre romanesque d’Antonio Tabucchi et des poèmes choisis de Sereni, Ungaretti et Montale apparaissent comme autant de manières exemplaires de répondre à cette interrogation.Qu’elle soit revendiquée par un nous ou par un je, qu’elle soit plurielle ou singulière, l’identité est toujours à construire, et sa manifestation ne peut que prendre la forme d’une quête sans cesse recommencée.
