Inner Sense

Does inner sense, like outer sense, provide inner sensations or, in other words, a sensory manifold of its own? Advocates of the disparity thesis on inner and outer sense claim that it does not. This interpretation, which is dominant in the preexisting literature, leads to several inconsistencies when applied to Kant’s doctrine of inner experience. Yet, while so, the parity thesis, which is the contrasting view, is also unable to provide a convincing interpretation of inner sensations. In this paper, I argue that this deadlock can be traced back to an inadequate understanding of inner sense shared by both sides. Drawing upon an analysis of the notion of obscure representations, I offer an alternative interpretation of inner sense with a special regard to self-affection, apprehension, and attention. From this basis, I will infer that outer sense delivers sensory content that is initially and intrinsically unaccompanied by phenomenal consciousness; inner sense contributes by endowing such content with phenomenal consciousness. Therefore, phenomenal qualities can be regarded as the sensory manifold of inner sense. This alternative interpretation solves the long-standing dispute concerning inner sensations and would further illuminate Kant’s notion of inner experience.

This volume sheds new light on Immanuel Kant’s conception of anthropology. Neither a careful and widespread search of the sources nor a merely theoretical speculation about Kant’s critical path can fully reveal the necessarily wider horizon of his anthropology. This only comes to light by overcoming all traditional schemes within Kantian studies, and consequently reconsidering the traditional divisions within Kant’s thought. The goal of this book is to highlight an alternative, yet complementary path followed by Kantian anthropology with regard to transcendental philosophy. The present volume intends to develop this path in order to demonstrate how irreducible it is in what concerns some crucial claims of Kant’s philosophy, such as the critical defense of the unity of reason, the search for a new method in metaphysics and the moral outcome of Kant’s thought.

Contrary to traditional behaviourist (Ryle 1949), logical behaviourist (Fodor and Chihara 1965), more recent psychologist (Hacking 1982) or expressivist (see e.g. Taylor 1980, Rosenthal 1993, Wright 1998, Moran 2001) readings of Wittgenstein, I intend to show that there is a room both for expression of inner perception and for observation of oneself in Wittgenstein’s last writings. In his last grammatical remarks, Wittgenstein (1980, 1982, 1992, 1998) indeed introduces a crucial distinction between two kinds of psychological utterances: expression and description. The purpose of this paper is to show that the grammar of “expressions” manifests, against behaviourist readings, a certain form of first person authority and of infallibility of self linguistic analysis; and that the grammar of first person descriptions reveals, against psychologist or expressivist readings, a Wittgensteinian use of the notion of self observation, based on reports and inference of my own psychic language games.

In Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, the self and time are interwoven on three different levels. To unveil this relation, this paper refers back to Kant’s criticism directed to the ideas of early modern philosophers concerning the two notions in question. On the three levels, three different conceptions of the self correspond to three aspects of time. In the first aspect we encounter the self as inner sense (appearance) and time reveals itself as the form of this sense. The first aspect of the self thus cannot be known as it is in itself; on the contrary, it can be known only as an appearance. Later, in virtue of the act of imagination, while the second aspect of the self is unfolded as a temporal self, time comes forth as formal intuition. In this level, the self starts to become conscious of its temporal character. Finally, in the third aspect, the relation between the transcendental unity of the self (apperception) and the unity of time becomes transparent. In the course of analyzing the three corresponding aspects of the self and time, this paper aims to reveal both the temporal character of the Kantian self and the subjective character of time.

ممّا لا ريب فيه أنّ العلّامة قطب¬الدين الشيرازي يعتبر من أعظم العلماء الذين برز نجمهم في عدّة علوم مختلفة خلال تاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية. فهو إلی جانب کونه فیلسوفا إشراقيا، کان فقیها أريبا وأديبا بليغا، وإلی جانب اشتهاره في الفلسفة المشائية کان طبيبا حاذقا، وإلی جانب مساهماته الجمّة في فروع الرياضيات والفلك عُرف کمتصوّف وعالم أخلاق. ويکاد هذا الجمع بين مختلف العلوم يميّزه عن سائر أقرانه بل ويمکّنه في حلّ مسائل لم يستطع غيره الخوض فيها ببراعة، لکونها بحاجة إلی الانشغال في أکثر فرع من الفروع العلمية. تُعدّ مسئلة الحواس الباطنة أو القوی النفسانية المدرِکة الباطنة من الأبحاث العالقة بين عدّة علوم مختلفة حيث يُبحث عنه في علم النفس من جهة وفي علم الحيوان وعلم الطب من جهة أخری، کما أنّ لها لوازم وتداعيات في العلوم النظرية الأخری من الفلسفة والتصوّف وغير ذلك. ولعلّ هذه المسئلة کمثيلاتها الإبستمولوجية الأخری بحاجة إلی دراسات بينية لإلقاء ضوء واستيعاب أحسن لجوانب المسئلة الأنطولوجية الوجودية والمعرفية الوجدانية والطبيعية الجسدانية.
في هذا الإطار، تسعی هذه الورقة إلی إبراز دور قطب¬الدين الشيرازي المعرفي ومساهماته المنهجية ذات توجّه قريب من الدراسات البينية في معالجة هذه القضية، عبر دراسة تحليلية لآثاره الطبية من قبيل التحفة السعدية، وهو شرحه علی کتاب القانون في الطب لابن سينا، وکتاباته الفلسفية من قبيل شرحه علی حکمة الإشراق للسهروردي و موسوعته الفارسية درّة التاج لغرّة الديباج. في هذا المقال وبعد تقديم تحليل للنصوص الواردة في الکتب أعلاه، توصّلنا إلی أنّ فيلسوفنا الطبيب یتعرّض في دراسته لظاهرة الحواس الباطنة إلی عدّة استدلالات فلسفية إلی جانب نماذج من تجارب طبية مختبرية وذلك لإثبات وجود کلّ واحد من هذه القوی الإدراکية الباطنية ومکان تواجدها في تجاويف الدماغ البشري. وفي الوقت نفسه الذي يعرض قطب الدين الشيرازي البراهين الفلسفية في کتاباته الطبّية، يقدّم أوصافا تجريبية وطبية في کتبه الفلسفية ممّا يدّل بوضوح علی تشابك النظريات الفلسفية النظرية والمشاهدات الطبية التجربية عنده واستخدامه المناهج العلمية المتنوعة في دراسة وتفسير هذه الظاهرة.
