Anthropophagy in Medieval Sicily: a cultural theme between chronicle and representation. Anthropophagy is the consumption of human flesh and the most extreme form of destruction of the human body, a physical violence which is the quintessential taboo of the self-described “civilized” societies. It provokes disgust, surprise and sometimes fascination, creating a deep connection between the text and the reader, and between the message and the audience. With regard to Sicily, anthropophagy is a cultural theme useful to discern between the account of real events and their representation. The construction of the image of Sicily, and even more of its inhabitants, the Sicilians, is based on an accumulation of clichés, often of ancient origins, transmitted and interpreted over the ages. One of them is surely the “bestiality” of its first inhabitants, intended as the ancient Cyclops or the Giants sons of Saturn, both of them “tyrants” described as man-eaters. During the Early Middle Ages the idea that the Sicilians eat human flesh was transferred to the new conquerors of the island: the Muslims, an infidel enemy to be fighted and considered beyond the boundaries of humanity and nature, meant as a divine law and therefore “civilization”. In both cases the accusations came from the outside, i.e. from groups as the ancient Greeks or the Christians (both Byzantine and Latin-Norman) who had an interest in representing the old and modern inhabitants of the island as anthropophagists to be feared, conquered, subjugated and converted to religion and/or civilization.

I Monti Sicani, situati tra Agrigento e Palermo, erano in gran parte sconosciuti dal punto di vista archeologico. Il survey, effettuato su 274 km², ha fornito un nuovo e ricco quadro delle strutture insediative, presenti nell’area tra l'età del rame e il medioevo. I siti preistorici ci forniscono un’immagine chiara della sequenzialità dei primi insediamenti e della sorprendente penetrazione delle influenze greche in queste remote aree montuose, in cui, oltre ai santuari di confine, sta emergendo anche un piccolo numero di fattorie di epoca greca. Un vero e proprio utilizzo intensivo del territorio si registra a partire dall’età ellenistica, ma è soprattutto nella tarda antichità che si avviano ristrutturazioni e si intensifica il numero di insediamenti. Il panorama che si delinea spazia dalla fase arabo-normanna fino al medioevo. Oltre 260 tavole a colori, mappe, disegni e supplementi documentano per la prima volta l'archeologia delle zone interne della Sicilia in maniera intensiva.


Die Monti Sicani zwischen Agrigent und Palermo waren archäologisch weitgehend unbekannt. Der Survey auf 274 km² hat ein neues und dichtes Bild der Siedlungsstrukturen zwischen der Kupferzeit und dem Mittelalter ergeben. Die prähistorischen Fundstellen zeichnen ein dichtes Bild von der Abfolge der frühen Siedlungen und vom erstaunlichen Vordringen griechischer Einflüsse in diese küstenfernen, gebirgigen Bereiche, in denen neben Grenzheiligtümern sogar eine kleine Zahl von griechenzeitlichen Gehöften entsteht. Eine Konzentration der Landnutzung beginnt im Hellenismus gefolgt von einer Neustrukturierung und Siedlungsverdichtung vor allem in der Spätantike. Der Blick reicht über die arabisch normannische Phase bis zum Mittelalter. Über 260 Farbtafeln Karten Zeichnungen und Beilagen dokumentieren erstmals die Archäologie des sizilianischen Binnenlandes.

ABSTRACT: This essay is focused on the materiality of the written culture(s) of the Islamic Sicily (827–1091), investigated through the Arabic, Jewish and Greek prisms. Other than a limited set of events and texts well known by means of indirect tradition, what remains of the written culture of that period? The present paper tries to answer to this question thanks to the history of written culture, i.e., the study of the processes related to the production of written texts, the different forms of their use, and the means that have allowed their preservation over time, well aware that silences and absences exceed what is offered by the sparse direct testimonies which has survived. The picture delineated is rich in nuances and entanglements, very revealing about the historical processes that Sicily underwent afterwards and about the cultures which interacted in its cultural space.

L a conquista araba della Sicilia ebbe inizio con lo sbarco a Mazara il 18 giugno dell'827 e portò, con la presa di Taormina (902), all'occupazione di quasi tutto il territorio isolano con l'esclusione della cuspide nord-orientale (Val Demone 1 ) nella quale la resistenza bizantina fu piegata solo nel 965. Le fasi della conquista sono note nel dettaglio grazie al resoconto fornitoci dalla "Cronaca di Cambridge", composta da un autore anonimo, probabilmente siciliano, nel X secolo. L'impresa fu portata a termine da contingenti militari Arabi e Berberi inviati dagli emiri Aghlabiti d'Ifrīqiya 2 . L'avanzata araba fu rapidissima nella Sicilia occidentale e in parte della Sicilia centrale, mentre richiese tempi ben più lunghi per il Val di Noto e il Val Demone, determinando una frontiera interna all'isola tra i territori acquisiti dagli Arabi e quelli rimasti in mano ai Bizantini. La conclusione della conquista non portò stabilità nell'immediato. Numerosi scontri opposero Arabi e Berberi finché l'ordine fu ristabilito grazie all'azione del primo emiro siciliano, Hasan al-Kalbi (948-954; m. 964), che portò a termine il processo di stabilizzazione del potere nell'isola. Egli fondò l'omonima dinastia kalbita che governò la Sicilia per novant'anni e che -pur essendo nominalmente dipendente dai Fatimidi d'Ifrīqiya -godette in realtà di una notevole autonomia. 1 Il termine "val" o "vallo" indica una ripartizione amministrativa del territorio siciliano la cui origine non è nota ma potrebbe ricondursi alla conquista araba. Esso potrebbe derivare dall'arabo wilāyah, che indicava un distretto amministrato da un governatore o wālī (Chiarelli 2011, p. 395). Il Val di Mazara comprendeva tutta la Sicilia occidentale e centro-meridionale fino ai fiumi Imera e Salso. Il Val di Noto si estendeva invece ad ovest del Salso includendo tutta la parte meridionale della Sicilia orientale, dalla piana di Catania verso Sud. Il Val Demone, il più piccolo dei tre valli, comprendeva le catene montuose settentrionali da Termini e l'area a nord e a nord ovest delle pendici dell'Etna (cfr. Epstein 1996, p. 33). La ripartizione dell'isola in tre valli rimase in vigore fino al 1818. 2 Il termine "Ifrīqiya", «derivato dalla denominazione di due province romane dell'odierna Tunisia e Algeria orientale, fu utilizzato [...] per designare i territori nordafricani a est di Bugia e a ovest di Tripoli» (Abulafia 2005).

Adanın Hıristiyan Normanlarca işgalinden sonra Sicilya Kralı II. Roger’in (h. 1105-30 Sicilya Kon-tu, 1130-54 Sicilya Kralı) teşvikiyle Şevvâl 548/Ocak 1154 tarihinde Palermo’da yazımına başlanan ve VI./XII. asrın büyük İslâm coğrafyacısı eş-Şerîf el-İdrîsî (ö. 560/1165?) tarafından kaleme alınan ünlü coğrafya eseri Kitâbü Nüzheti’l-müştâk fî ihtirâkı’l-âfâk, Sicilya’da bir arada uyum içinde gelişen Arap-Norman ilmî işbirliğinin zirvesini temsil etmiştir. Kitap, Ortaçağ’ın bilinen dünya coğrafyası için olduğu kadar; eserin telif edildiği adanın o tarihteki coğrafî durumu hakkında da bu alanda araştırmalar yapanlar için zengin tarihî, toponomik, sosyal, dinî, ekonomik, mimarî vb. malzemeler sunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada esas itibariyle el-İdrîsî’nin özgün dünya haritasındaki coğrafî taksîme göre yeryüzünün IV. İklîm II. Cüz’ünü oluşturan bölge, Sicilya Adası özelinde ele alınmış; değerlendirilmiş ve adaya dair aktarımlar tam metin halinde Türkçeye tercüme edilerek notlandırılmıştır.

Conca d’oro è il nome della fertile piana, compresa tra mare e monti, che circonda la città di Palermo per una estensione di ca. 100 km2, celebrata per la sua feracità sin dalla antichità classica. Il presente studio intende delineare la storia del toponimo, indagando le implicazioni linguistiche e culturali ad esso connesse. Attestato come Co(n)ca  aurea nella temperie di rinnovamento culturale che investe la città di Palermo intorno al 1470, il toponimo potrebbe celare una formazione paraetimologica ibrida arabo-latina, in analogia ad altri casi siciliani già noti (es. Mongibello).

The present research paper aims to introduce and discuss the special issue dedicated to The Sicilian Questions. Thanks to the increase in studies and research there seems to be an urgent need today, more than ever, to bring together all the fragments of an uniterrupted historical dialogue between Sicily, understood in its widest geo-political meaning, and the Arabo-Islamic world. The study of the Arabic elements in this history of Sicily has been presented with well-defined chronological and cultural limits (ninth to thirteenth centuries), set out in the work of Michele Amari. Nonetheless, as the present work demonstrates, a diachronic and transdisciplinary perspective allows new and unexpected viewpoints to open up. The need emerges to broaden chronological limits to the entire Middle Ages and beyond, whilst fully aware of other disciplines and areas of knowledge, which have until now been overlooked, isolated or simply considered secondary or subordinate.

In the complex of buildings that make up the Palace of the
Norman Kings the original ones are few. The
reinterpretation of public diplomas and chronicles of the
time, all known documents, allows us to hypothetically
locate the buildings of their origins and perhaps to
confirm the occupation of the site already in the Islamic
age, thanks also to the results of the most recent
archaeological excavations.

On peut donc s'interroger sur la situation actuelle des études portant sur la Sicile comme partie de l'empire byzantin, puis du dâr al-islam. Les périodes byzantine et islamique de l'histoire de la Sicile sont ici traitées parallèlement car elles soulèvent des questionnements similaires. * Nous désirons remercier Igor Mineo de nous avoir poussés à penser de manière plus précise notre position sur cette question et pour son ouverture à la discussion dont son intérêt pour une période qui n'est pas sa spécialité témoigne. 1 Même s'il faut bien reconnaître que les Byzantins semblent moins « populaires » que les Sarrazins de ce point de vue. La question soulevée est en fait celle de l'existence d'une véritable identité « byzantine » de cette province occidentale, problème affronté, à l'échelle plus générale de l'Italie -ce qui est en soi une prise de position -par A. Guillou au travers de sa célèbre question « Italie byzantine ou Byzantins en Italie ? » 6 , comme plus récemment et de façon extrêmement pertinente, par M. McCormick 7 .

Le vocable fitna est très répandu dans les textes médiévaux islamiques, y compris si l'on s'en tient au champ du politique ou du politico-religieux, sans entrer dans la polysémie du terme 1 . Il connaît une gradation d'utilisation qui va de la fitna entre 'Ali et Mu'awiya 2 , voire des deuxième, troisième et quatrième fitna/s, distinguées par les historiens des premiers siècles de l'Islam et par les historiens contemporains à leur suite 3 , à des événements plus anecdotiques. On constate, en outre, que si les premières références affectent le centre de l'empire islamique, chaque région est susceptible d'avoir connu des épisodes qui sont considérés comme fondamentaux pour son évolution politique et sont taxés de fitna 4 . Il reste certainement à mener une enquête systématique, mais une telle recherche suppose un travail d'équipe. Il s'agira donc ici de lever le voile sur ce qu'il en est de l'utilisation de ce terme pour la Sicile.

At the end of Sicily’s Islamic period, the Maliki juridical school was firmly rooted and documented in the island; but like many as- pects of the cultural life of the island during the Islamic Age, the historical process that led to this situation is yet to be clarified. The pres- ent study aims to contribute by providing a historical context for a passage of the Kitab al-mihan, a book of Islamic martyrology writ- ten by Abu l-‘Arab Muhammad al-Tamimi (d. 333/945), which until now has been over- looked by every study – both old and new – on Islamic Sicily. The works relates how a judge living and working in Sicily, Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Ta’i, known as Ibn al-Majjani, was imprisoned and tortured at the behest of Ibrahim II (261-289/875-902), the Aghlabid sovereign who has been of most interest to historians. Other than establishing a plausible date for the event (275/888-889), the article analyses the historical role of places and peo- ple, placing the ‘martyrdom’ of Ibn al-Majjani in the context of the political repression ex- erted by Ibrahim II following the episode of Ibn Talib (d. 275/888-889) and the subsequent religious censorship imposed by the Aghlabid at the expense of the Maliki élites in Ifriqiya and, perhaps also, in the nearby wilaya of Sicily.

Partant de la mention dans le Murūğ al-ḏahab de l'historien al-Mas'ūdī du tombeau du philosophe grec Porphyre dans l'Etna, le présent article se propose d'enquêter sur certaines modalités de la transmission d'éléments de la culture antique dans les traditions arabo-musulmanes sur la Sicile. Dans les écrits des géographes arabes concernant l'île volcanique, la mort de plusieurs philosophes ou savants de l'Antiquité se trouve associée à l'Etna de manière anecdotique, mais réitérée, et sans que des liens textuels puissent clairement être établis. Le parcours des textes grecs et latins, antiques et médiévaux, relatifs à ces auteurs classiques, mais aussi leur réception dans le monde arabo-musulman laissent transparaître le cheminement complexe d'une tradition mémorielle protéiforme associant les descriptions de la Sicile à la mort des philosophes de l'Antiquité.

Based on a close analysis of three interrelated Mālikī fatwās on trading with the enemy issued by Granadan jurist Abū Isḥāq al-Shāṭibī (d. 790/1388), Tunisian jurist Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad al-Māzarī (d. 536/1141), and Maghribī jurist ʿAlī b. ʿAbd al-Salām al-Tasūlī (d. 1258/1842), this study shows that muftīs strategically manipulate their predecessors' opinions in order to construct precedents more supportive of their desired rulings; the "mere" application of school doctrine to a recurring case may involve considerable juristic flexibility and adaptation of legal practice to changing legal and political circumstances. Further, these opinions demonstrate that the issuance of a fatwā is not just an intellectual task or a rhetorical exercise, but a performance. A fatwā's value as a precedent for later jurists may be based as much on the earlier muftī's model performance in issuing the ruling as it is on the legal message conveyed by that ruling.

When the Normans arrived in Sicily in 1061 they encountered a largely Arabic-speaking and Muslim population that had been formed by conquest, migration and settlement over the course of two centuries of Muslim rule. Although documentary and archaeological records are limited and fragmentary, there has long been a scholarly suspicion that movements to and from the island may be insufficient to explain its socioreligious and linguistic formation. In response, this article presents a framework of historical process arguing that Sicilian Muslim communities had also absorbed Greek-rite Christians into extended kin-groups who acculturated into an increasingly insular and melting-pot society shaped by a ‘patriarchal state’. From the 1030s, when that Muslim state began to collapse, political re-alignment again foreshadowed a socioreligious and linguistic transformation. Both Sicilian Muslim and Christian factions allied with knights from the Italian mainland, but the Muslim communities in particular underwent rapid dissolution in an increasingly Christianised state and society during the better documented 1100s. The paper concludes that those positioned along the old Muslim–Christian peripheries – liminal groups and individuals for whom politics and religion had always closely interrelated – could operate within and across communities otherwise divided by language, faith and allegiance. As such, they assumed far greater importance in times of political uncertainty and transition, most visibly during and after the Norman Conquest, spearheading wider change as they did so.

À l'opposé des conceptions essentialistes qui portent à concevoir le monde islamique comme fondamentalement violent, en particulier dès que l'on traite de la sphère politique et de l'exercice du pouvoir 1 , il convient de chercher à écrire une histoire de la violence publique, de ses usages et de ses conceptions dans le monde islamique, pour laquelle nous manquons aujourd'hui d'analyses précises 2 . Cette étude se veut une contribution ponctuelle à cet indispensable effort de réflexion collectif 3 . Le cas d'Ibrāhīm II, un des derniers émirs aghlabides (261-289/875-902) avant l'avènement des Fatimides en Ifrīqiya, a toujours été considéré comme extrême de ce point de vue 4 . Cet exemple permet d'exposer les conceptions développées par les chroniqueurs à propos de la violence du prince, laquelle constitue une des facettes de la violence publique.
