Istanbul Biennial

Shaped by the ubiquitous yet unnoticed component of the city, the 14th Istanbul Biennial, SALTWATER: A  eory of  ought Forms, takes up a lighthouse located on the northernmost coastline, a hotel in Prince Islands, a garage in Tophane, and thirty-three other locations including museums, public libraries, and an artist’s studio. Most of the venues host works by a single artist therefore reinforcing the idea of site-speci city throughout the biennial. In curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev’s words, ‘there are collisions between art and life, knots that tie them together’ and the critical interventions to these physical spaces becomes a de ning part of the biennial (Christov-Bakargiev, 2015: 43).  is year’s biennial is an attempt to transcend conventional understandings of an art exhibition with its references to different forms of knowledge productions such as science and philosophy. Given the complexity and extent of such a project, Christov-Bakargiev takes the role of drafter, the one who drafts where to draw the line, to withdraw, to draw upon, to draw out and forms alliances with artists, scientist, and writers both from Turkey and abroad.

yapı olarak kaldığı şeklinde eleştiriler yapılmış olsa da,
iyi yönleri sıkça vurgulanan 12. İstanbul Bienali tasarlanırken,
hem İstanbul ve dünya arasındaki ilişki, hem de
sanat-siyaset-kişisellik kavramları arasındaki ilişki gibi
düşüncelerin etkili olduğu belirtilmiştir.

7.İstanbul Sanat Fuarı ve  Rosa Martinez’in küratörlüğünde gerçekleşen 5.Uluslararası İstanbul Bienali eş zamanlı olarak gerçekleşiyordu. Bugüne kadar, Sanat Fuarı’nı izlemiştim, ancak Bienali görme fırsatım olmamıştı. Her iki etkinliği, Antalya’da sadece haberlerden bize sunulduğu kadar takip edebiliyor, gidip görmeyince bizde bırakacağı  etkilerden mahrum kalıyoruz. Kız kardeşim Sıdıka da, beni yüreklendiriyordu, özellikle Bienali gelip görmem konusunda.

It has been suggested that contemporary art biennials have become incredibly self-reflexive about their own articulation and their need to reflect on their own location, place or context (O’Neill). This research takes this idea as a departure point to explore how recent curatorial practices focus on the site of the biennial - urban and rural cities and towns, and specifically their geographical, political, economic and social contexts - as both the theme and the location of the display of art. In particular, I use the 13th Istanbul Biennial as a case study to explore what I have identified as “locatedness” - a process whereby the curator reflects on the location and context of the site of art production and display through working from within that site. This essay is the result of an examination of the differences between the biennial’s curatorial intentions and realities, drawing from previous and current curatorial statements, discussions with key figures within Istanbul’s contemporary art sector including biennial staff, and my own observations of the biennial itself. Three key elements within the curatorial framework of locatedness will be discussed: the curator’s position working from within the site of production, the curator as negotiator between artist and place and the construction of new localities.

komşu temasıyla başlayan Bienal’e kafa tutan bir yanı
olduğunu, kapıdan girerken bize “defol” diyen
-üstelik serginin adı Willkommen (Hoş geldin) Varsayımı
olduğu hâlde- anlamak pek de zor değildi. Sanatçı ikilisi Elmgreen & Dragset’in küratörlüğünü üstlendiği bienal, komşuluk anlayışımızın tüm dünyada sınırlar ve kapı komşulukları düzeyinde hızla değiştiği bir dönemde komşuluk kavramını tartışıyor. "İyi bir komşu nasıl olmalıdır?" sorularının yer aldığı afişler, İstanbul’un ve başka ülke başkentlerinin duvarlarında yer bulurken iyi komşular kadar, iyi olmayan komşuların
da nasıl kimseler olabileceğine dair gizli cevapları almamızı sağlıyor. 32 ülkeden 56 sanatçının, komşuluk hallerini her yönüyle ele aldığı bienaldeki en kışkırtıcı çalışmalardan biri de kötü komşuların varlığını ilân eden Willkommen Varsayımı ile Stephen G. Rhodes’in sergisiydi. Bu metin iyi komşuların aslında toplumsal birlikteliği baltalayan iyi niyet örtüsü altındaki yaklaşımlarını sorguluyor ve bienalin sorusunu bambaşka bir açıdan cevaplama amacı taşıyor.

In this study, it is mentioned curators, conceptual frameworks, spaces, artists, protests, criticisms with 11thInternational Istanbul Biennial which was organized between 12 September and 08 November 2009. With thisstudy, it is aimed to search by whom and why Biennial criticized and why it is defined the most political biennial. At the 11th Biennial, it is seen that it is arranged an art atmosphere which is constructed carefullyfrom curators to conceptual frameworks and from spaces to artists. In this atmosphere which emanates fromcontrast and contradiction art-politics-culture-policy-fund are nested deliberately and has been provided a basisfor criticism from different part of society. Known person, event, fact and concept such as Brecht, Marx, Koç,12 September 1980 coup, communism, capitalism and a lot of o1ther issue and fact, which has been taken placefor years at Biannel, appeared on the 11. Biennial’s stage and became a political stage and on this stage a bigepic theatre was performed.

Nasıl bir sonuç çıkacağına dair hiçbir fikrimiz yoktu; açılış gününden önce de tam olarak bilemeyeceğiz. 1 Yeni sipariş edilen işlerin yanı sıra, dünyanın diğer yerlerinde bu bienalle bağlantılı yöntemlerle çalışan sanatçıların çoklukla mevcut işlerinden seçim yapmayı önemsedik. Bunu da, izleyicilerin bienali okuyuş biçimlerinin çeşitliliğini genişletmek ve bir tür İstanbulculuk budalalığından [İstanbul özcülüğünden] uzak durmak için yaptık. If we think about the past as a fluid, a substance that continually deforms under pressure, then how do artworks explore knots, hitches, and catastrophes—the moments of rupture in history? Could artworks or biennials have healing effect on the public in moments of crisis? Taking its cue from these questions, this article focuses on four artworks that were part of the 14th Istanbul Biennial that ended in early November 2015.

Bu metin; 2016 senesinde İsmail Kocataş tarafından, herhangi bir akademik kaygı güdülmeden, 22 Ekim – 20 Kasım 2016 arasında gerçekleştirilen Beatriz Colomina ve Mark Wigley’in kurotörlüğünü yaptığı 3. This text is a collection of paragraphs, without any academic concern, that can be called 'delirium' about the biennial and architecture after İsmail Kocataş's 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial tour curated by Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley between 22 October and 20 November 2016.

Abstract:
Turkey's geographical position and cultural characteristics have never been absent from the Oriental discourse concerning its membership in the European Union. The country’s still ongoing negotiations with the West and now familiar one step forward and two steps back routine has baffled her own citizens seeking to pinpoint their global identity. Looking for news related to Turkey in international newspapers and their websites is a very clear and basic lesson for understanding the country’s perceived place in the world. Depending on the newspaper’s political views and at times on the context of the story, the section to find Turkey fluctuates between “Europe” and “Middle East”. For instance, while Turkey is listed on the BBC’s website in the Europe section, the New York Times places Turkey in their section covering the Middle East. This is a minor but poignant example of Turkish people’s fundamental confusion about where to place themselves, and perhaps the West’s struggle to place Turkey’s position as well; Middle Eastern or European, or perhaps, like Istanbul on the country’s far western edge but its social, cultural and historical center, somewhere in between. This confusion has been developing since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and subsequent forming of a new republic in 1923. This also lays out a valid example of how Turkey is seen as a country by the West. The fact that Turkey is construed to be neither completely European nor Middle Eastern makes it an interesting and appealing place to observe the country’s modernization progress within the terms of global art.

Hanru, the curator of the 10th International Istanbul Biennial, had proposed a similar concept in his curatorial framework in 2007. Hanru questioned modern Turkish politics and its practices, most specifically its complicated modernization process as well as its decades-long negotiations with the EU, within his focus theme of the “global war era”.

With this all in mind, this paper seeks to analyze Hanru’s curatorial concept for the 10th International Istanbul Biennial, Not Only Possible But Also Necessary: Optimism in the Age of Global War by looking at examples of where his assertions rang true and where they fell short when seeking to make sense of Turkey’s genuinely complicated political history within a broadly constructed curatorial framework. In addition, this paper seeks to examine the binary positions of Turkey and the E.U. within the scope of Homi Bhabha’s term “colonial mimicry”.

In this study, 14th Istanbul Biennial, in terms of Griselda Pollock's concept of shared critical reflection were evaluated around the centre exhibition Channel and the works Silence of Ani by Francis Alys, A Room of Rhythms – Otopark by Cevdet Erek.

This on-going project, dedicated to ancient goddesses in Mesopotamia and Anatolia, consists of a series of hand-made artist books, and the installation of them on an altar-table. These first two books were created as an offering to two goddesses: one for Tiamat, Sumerian-Babylonian goddess–the spirit of chaos and ruler of salty waters—, and the other for Inanna—the ‘Lady of Heaven,’ and goddess of love and fertility.
