Departing from the fact that László Moholy-Nagy's Von Material zu Architektur (1929), had been an important source of inspiration for Alvar Aalto, this article examines the affinities between László Moholy-Nagy and Alvar Aalto's intellectual positions. The article places emphasis on two particular ideas: how Aalto and Moholy-Nagy conceived the connection of biology with standardization and technology and its relationship to light and perception. Special attention is paid to the notions of "flexible standardisation" and rationalisation in Aalto's thought, as well as to his belief that nature and standardization should be conceived are closely interconnected. In regard to their shared intellectual development, the article sheds light on the first encounters of the two men including: their meeting at the second Congrès International de l'Architecture Moderne (CIAM) in 1929; the June 1931 Finish meeting of Aino Marsio-Aalto, Alvar Aalto, Moholy-Nagy and Ellen Frank; the June 1931 exchanges between Aalto and Moholy-Nagy during the inner circle CIAM meeting in Berlin; and the common stay of the Aaltos and Moholy-Nagy in London in 1933 are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on Aalto's "The Reconstruction of Europe is the Key Problem for the Architecture of Our Time", in which he argued that standardization in architecture should draw upon biological models.

A closer reading of the late poetry of Jean Hans Arp (1886-1966), major figure of the Dada movement in Zurich, a friend of the surrealists, painter, sculptor, also author of an important bilingual poetic work, which covers more than half a century of creation (with a choice of poems previously unpublished).

Une lecture rapprochée de la poésie tardive de Jean Hans Arp (1886-1966), figure majeure du mouvement Dada à Zurich, ami des surréalistes, peintre, sculpteur, également auteur d'une importante œuvre poétique bilingue, en allemand et en français, qui couvre plus d'un demi-siècle de création (avec un choix de poèmes encore inédits).

Comment se renouveler pour un dadaïste lorsque l'on a déjà derrière soi plusieurs décennies de création, et que l'on revendiquait la nouveauté radicale comme principe esthétique ? Comment, alors même que l'on a commencé à créer pendant et à cause de la Première Guerre mondiale, en exprimant par la poésie le rejet de la barbarie humaine, peut-on continuer à écrire après 1945, lorsque la catastrophe non seulement se répète, mais s'amplifie démesurément moins d'un quart de siècle plus tard ? Ces deux questions, relatives au vieillissement des avant-gardes et à leur rapport à la réalité historique, se sont posées au dadaïste Jean Hans Arp au sortir de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et guident la réflexion du présent ouvrage.

Ce travail s'intéresse à un pan méconnu de sa production : sa poésie tardive, dont il propose une lecture rapprochée. Prenant le contre-pied des recherches réduisant l'innovation et l'expérimentation formelles d'Arp à sa production dadaïste, il met en lumière l'inventivité et la cohérence structurelle de l'œuvre des années cinquante et soixante, permettant l'expression d'une subjectivité instable et fragmentaire. Dans sa poétique tardive, empruntant une voie singulière dans le contexte générationnel du devenir des avant-gardes après 1945, Arp maintient intacte la virulence de sa critique de la civilisation et propose quelque chose comme un contre-modèle poétique, que l'on pourrait appeler sa « cosmogonie de poche », qui fait plus que jamais fi de la linéarité sémantique.

L'ouvrage propose un choix de poèmes encore inédits d'Arp, issus de sa production tardive.

Das Anliegen dieses Beitrags ist es, Arps Spätdichtung im Dialog mit den Experimenten der neuen Avantgarden im deutschen und französischen Sprachraum zu untersuchen. Gegen die Vorstellung, Arps Spätwerk sei hauptsächlich durch Religiösität geprägt und verabschiede die „Unsinn-Poesie“ zugunsten einer „Gedankenlyrik“, die einen Verrat an den Prinzipien von Dada begehe, wird gezeigt, dass Arps Dichtung der Fünfziger und Sechziger sich durch „ungelöste Widersprüche“ (im Sinne des von Edward Said definierten Spätstils) charakterisiert, wobei solche scheinbar unversöhnliche Tendenzen wie Reduktion und Narrativität zusammen weiterbestehen. Eine Vorliebe für Paradox sowie Wortspiele und Sprachexperimente, die weiterhin im Zentrum von Arps Dichtung sind, gelten als Vorbild für die neue Avantgarde, genau so wie seine Produktion aus der Dada-Zeit.
Am Beispiel von einigen Publikationen soll das Zusammenspiel zwischen Arps dichterischer Produktion und der der experimentellen Poesie untersucht werden, sei es die konkrete Poesie in Deutschland, in Österreich und in der Schweiz oder die poésie sonore in Frankreich. Solche Zeitschriften wie Spirale (Bern), Augenblick (Stuttgart), Manuskripte (Graz) und Reale Poesie (München), oder wie Cinquième Saison (Paris) zeugen von einem lebendigen Dialog zwischen der inzwischen „historisch“ (Peter Bürger) gewordenen Avantgarde und der neuen Generation, die sie wiederentdeckt bzw. als Avantgarde überhaupt anerkennt und neuerfindet (Hal Foster). Andere Veröffentlichungen wie Iliazds Poésie de Mots inconnus zeigen, wie wichtig es im kulturellen Feld wird, die eigene Vorreiterrolle im Bereich der Lautdichtung gegenüber die Lettristen zu behaupten. Letztlich wird auf die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Arp und der jüngeren Surrealisten-Generation hingewiesen werden, die im Paris der Nachkriegszeit eine nach wie vor dominante Rolle spielt.

Coordination d'un double dossier consacré à Jean Hans Arp et Gabrielle Buffet-Picabia.

Soixante ans après l'installation d'Arp dans le Tessin, le numéro s'articule autour d'inédits (poèmes et correspondance) afin de mettre en lumière son rôle de passeur entre surréalisme français et dada germanophone. Dada est aussi une femme: Gabrielle Buffet-Picabia, venue de New York et de Paris, opéra à Zurich la "jonction suisse" de Dada et y publia, il y a tout juste cent ans, des manifestes aujourd'hui méconnus.

The text analyzes the contacts between the Brazilian artist Lygia Clark and the French-German artist Hans Arp, as well as the connections between their conceptions of Concrete Art.

The Ends of Collage, was an exhibition that spread over three platforms, each offering a different perspective from which to review the medium of collage and its legacies. At Luxembourg & Dayan, New York, the exhibition was dedicated to some of the technical preconditions of collage (variety of cuts, masks and windows, image manipulations and the notion of ‘edge’). At Luxembourg & Dayan, London, the show shifted the focus towards some of the major themes that characterise the medium (fantasy, the domestic sphere, dismemberment of the social or private body, and the mobility of images). The third platform continues to live on the pages of a printed publication that brings together various theoretical motivations that precipitated the emergence of collage at the beginning of the twentieth century along with those that expanded the medium beyond its traditional limits with the emergence of digital cultures in the late 1970s.

The title chosen for the exhibition, The Ends of Collage, refers both literally and metaphorically to the place where collage fulfils its calling — at the ends or edges of pictures and fragments, where separate worlds come together or break apart from one another. It also suggests an historical paradigm, where collage is considered as a medium that existed in the so called ‘age of mechanical reproduction’ and has now been overcome by the new logic of the digital age.

Après un préambule consacré aux réminiscences du mythe de Babel dans l’œuvre arpienne, cet article étudie des traductions par Arp de poèmes de Jean Cassou, qu’il enrichit alors d’un intertexte romantique et de constructions lexicales et syntaxiques propres à l’allemand pour en accentuer les ambiguïtés. Enfin, l’étude propose d’utiliser la notion de traduction pour comprendre le bilinguisme entre art poétique et art plastique, et montre que l’attribution des titres de sculptures relève d’un même travail avec la matière plastique des mots dans lequel le hasard (Zu-Fall) joue le rôle de co-créateur.

Examination of the paper as a material rather merely a support for mark-making in the work of modern artists from Pablo Picasso, Jean (Hans) Arp, and Henri Matisse to Lee Krasner, Robert Motherwell, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly.

This essay is going to substantiate Seibert´s hypothesis that the MoMA-exhibition "Prehistoric Rock Pictures from Europe and Africa" curated by Alfred H. Barr in 1937, which showed 150 copies of prehistoric rock paintings, colored and partly in original size, legitimized new artistic forms to represent the past. In a visionary way, Barr complemented the exhibition concept by a separate section comprising artefacts
by European avant-gardists, such as Paul Klee, and the surrealists André Masson, Joan Miró and Jean Arp. This made a visual conversation available to the public. Klee`s oil transfer drawing "Little Experimental Machine" (1921) which was exhibited at MoMA is a striking example, that prehistoric art influenced the genesis of contemporary art in der 1930s, in Europe and in the United States. But Barr`s art
premier was not a by-product. For the generation of contemporary New York artists, Klee, Arp, Miró, Kandinsky, and Picasso, played a groundbreaking role and the New Yorkers were familiar with them from having studied in Paris. The juxtapositioning of the prehistoric and the avant-garde showed the diachronic axis of their presumed influence. This article demonstrates that contemporary debates about prehistoric artists and their art concepts belonged to a general American discourse on »Primitivism«, in a transatlantic dialogue. Within this discourse, prehistoric paintings captivated their viewers by means of their hitherto unimaginable temporal distance and the magic of having found the earliest expression of human creativity.

Il saggio intende focalizzarsi sul valore della forma scultorea nell’opera di Alberto Meli, mettendo in evidenza la centralità dei contatti e delle esperienze internazionali dell’artista bergamasco. In particolare, l’incontro e la lunga frequentazione con Jean Arp e con altri artisti di levatura internazionale fra gli anni Cinquanta e gli anni Sessanta, spingono Meli verso la ricerca di forme astratte che tuttavia mantengono uno stretto rapporto con la dimensione organica della vita, con la sua metamorfica vitalità e il suo dinamismo. Le analisi di alcune opere realizzate dopo l’incontro con Jean Arp, come Cavallo, Toro nell’arena, Torso femminile, Lussuria, Maternità, Enigma, mostrano una matura capacità da parte dello scultore di far dialogare pieni e vuoti, torsioni e linee, disegnando forme dinamiche che riempiono e definiscono lo spazio. L’attenzione, anche teorica, dell’artista per il mistero della vita, indagato sia attraverso i risultati della scienza sia sulla base dei presupposti della fede religiosa, trova una soluzione formale che, anche negli esiti più astratti, mantiene una relazione molto stretta con i processi organici della natura.

In the period after the Second World War, the work of Hans Arp had a remarkable diffusion and reception in the italian artistic and cultural context. Moreover, it was his sculpture artworks of an organic matrix that had a particular appreciation among the critics and was also the most admired and received between the Italian young generations that were active during the key period of the mid-1940s and mid-1950s, and that were eager of the novelties of non-figurative artistic research. In fact for the young Italian sculptors ‒ like Alberto Viani, Renato Barisani, Salvatore Messina, Bruno De Toffoli, Carlo Sergio Signori ‒, Hans Arp was, in a certain manner, the “father” of modern sculpture, and for this, his artworks, mainly known by the several exhibitions in the editions of the Biennale di Venezia between the 1940s and the 1950s, and by the reproduction of his artworks in magazines and books ‒ which began to spread in Italy in that period ‒, were for these Italian artists a key stimulus in the development of their own non-figurative plastic research, mostly of an organic matrix.
Nonetheless in most cases the relationship of Arp and the young Italian artists was characterized of being like master and disciple, the relationship between the Alsatian sculptor and Alberto Viani was surely different and certainly more balanced. Moreover, Viani, who had been instructed by Arturo Martini, had developed the sculptural “crisis” of his master, around the mid-1940s, in a vital and personal research of abstract and biomorphic forms, but deeply rooted in the human figure, where coexisted as principal modern sources the lessons of surrealistic sculpture of Picasso and the organic lessons of Arp. Whereas for Viani, Arp represented without a doubt an essential point for the development of his plastic research, for Arp, Viani was so much an admirable artist to dedicate to him, on 1957, one of his poems called Petits poèmes à l'intention de Viani. Moreover, Viani's artworks, as hypothesized by the art historian Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti on 1964, could be a stimulus for some researches of more formal matrix, specially some human torsos realized by Arp during the 1950s.
The lecture proposed for this conference looks to reconstruct in depth, by analyzing some unpublished documents from the archives, the effective nature of the relationship between Arp and Viani between the 1940s to the 1960s. Moreover the proposal aims to make more clear when, how and in which way Arp's work has worked as a stimulus for Viani's artistic research and if, eventually, Viani's works of the human figure, of humanistic tradition, could have been an important source of stimuli for Arp during the 1950s.

Cette contribution prend appui sur deux complexes poétiques de Jean Hans Arp, formés par les poèmes parus notamment sous le titre «Wunderhornkonfiguration» pour l’un, et sous le titre «Kunigundulakonfiguration» pour l’autre, en 1957. Nous remontons aux matrices dadaïstes de ces deux ensembles de poèmes (Der Vogel Selbdritt, 1920), qui présentent d’emblée des motifs romantiques empruntés à Achim von Arnim et Clemens Brentano, pour montrer comment, dans les années trente, Arp les intègre à sa poétique des «configurations» (poétiques et artistiques), à côté des constellations et des concrétions («Konfigurationen», Vertigral, 1932). Cette poétique se fonde sur une conception de l’œuvre comprise comme toujours inachevée et sans cesse reprise, variée, «reconfigurée». Enfin, troisième moment dans le devenir des configurations arpiennes, la production tardive (années cinquante et soixante) voit le poète éditeur-compositeur reprendre une nouvelle fois ce matériau ancien, qu’il dote alors de nouveaux titres («Wunderhornkonfiguration», «Kunigundulakonfiguration», Worte mit und ohne Anker, 1957), explicitant ainsi l’héritage romantique dans un geste historiographique qui place dada et le surréalisme dans la double filiation du romantisme allemand et du symbolisme français. Les «fables contemporaines» de la même période («Zeitgemäße Fabeln», Auch das ist nur eine Wolke, 1951) constituent une variante et une expansion de la «Kunigundulakonfiguration» et rendent visibles les deux principes créatifs, potentiellement contradictoires, qu’Arp puise dans le romantisme : d’une part, le développement de la narrativité, placée sous le signe du merveilleux ; d’autre part, l’esthétique du fragment et de l’art combinatoire marqué par le hasard, par laquelle Arp se rattache cette fois davantage à Novalis et au Friedrich Schlegel de l’Athenäum.

Si Raoul Hausmann affirme dès l’ouverture de son Courrier Dada, en 1958, qu’il est permis d’écrire une histoire de Dada, c’est bien que la légitimité de ce projet est problématique. Plus que jamais, les années cinquante marquent pour les dadaïstes l’heure du paradoxe et de l’exacerbation des contradictions qui étaient déjà au cœur du phénomène dada : ceux-là même qui rejetaient toute théorie, toute perspective historique et toute canonisation initient après la Seconde Guerre mondiale un processus global de réflexion sur ce que fut Dada et en deviennent – parfois à leur corps défendant – les premiers historiographes. Pour ces acteurs, les enjeux sont multiples : reconnaissance de leur rôle radicalement novateur et de leur originalité, affirmation de leur légitimité à l’égard des plus jeunes générations, inscription dans l’histoire culturelle. Il n’en reste pas moins que l’entreprise d’auto-constitution comme avant-garde, qui représente un aspect essentiel des productions tardives des artistes dada, demeure intrinsèquement aporétique, tout comme l’idée d’un « Dada après Dada » : comment poursuivre une esthétique de rupture, fondamentalement anti-généalogique ?
Dans un premier temps, nous revenons donc sur le caractère intrinsèquement paradoxal de cette continuation de Dada après 1945 et de l’auto-historicisation à laquelle se livrent les dadaïstes vieillissants, qui se traduit pour eux par un certain nombre de défis à relever formant autant d’écueils à éviter : nécessité de renouvellement formel et écriture d’une histoire dada qui ne tombe pas dans des formes conventionnelles ; pièges de l’(auto-)monumentalisation et de la sacralisation pour des artistes et écrivains parlant de leur œuvre après des décennies de production ; menace de canonisation et d’institutionnalisation pour ceux qui font l’objet d’une certaine reconnaissance, obligeant à repenser le rapport entre art (ou littérature) et société, dont la réunion fut au cœur du projet des avant-gardes.
Dans un second temps, cette contribution s’appuie sur les travaux de Michel de Certeau, Paul Ricœur et Hayden White et sur l’idée du passé comme « fiction du présent » pour montrer que des histoires (ou métahistoires) de Dada sont néanmoins possibles. A l’aune de ce cadre théorique sont analysés trois ouvrages « historiographiques » dada : Unsern täglichen Traum de Jean Hans Arp (Arche 1955), Courrier Dada de Raoul Hausmann (Le Terrain Vague 1958) et Die Geburt des Dada édité par Peter Schifferli (Arche 1957), qui présentent des formes mixtes et hétérogènes mêlant production ancienne et textes nouveaux, poésie et critique, documents et créations, autobiographie et anthologie collective, et qui par là s’inscrivent toujours en faux contre la conception classique de l’œuvre. Tous ces textes présentent une « structure dédoublée » (Certeau), combinant deux types de discours, science et fiction, rendant possible l’intégration au texte historiographique ou métahistorique de procédés tels que le collage, le montage, les variations et réécritures, et même la contradiction.
Dans une dernière partie, nous reposons enfin la question d’une éventuelle trahison des principes dada et relativisons l’idée d’un Dada qui serait en quelque sorte soluble dans l’historiographie. Pour ce faire, nous procédons en deux temps, exposant tout d’abord quelques exemples de falsification ou mystification dada (jeu entre original et traduction, entre original et variante postérieure, fausse datation). Deuxièmement, nous revenons sur la question de la production d’un savoir et reprenons la définition par Barthes du savoir comme énonciation (et non comme énoncé), qui met en scène le langage au lieu de simplement l’utiliser et, ce faisant, engrène le savoir dans ce qu’il appelle « le rouage de la réflexivité infinie » (Leçon inaugurale du Collège de France, 1977). Nous pouvons en conclure que si dans les années cinquante et soixante, les dadaïstes deviennent bel et bien les premiers historiographes de Dada, c’est avant tout parce qu’ils continuent à pratiquer ce que Barthes nomme une « révolution permanente du langage ».

Ce texte cherche à préciser la nature du rapport du poète et artiste alsacien Jean Hans Arp (1886-1966) à ses langues et à la langue, et de montrer qu’il s’agit moins de l’expression d’une culture « nationale » qui serait tantôt allemande, tantôt française, que de la création d’une langue poétique singulière, née de l’écart « entre les langues » et entre les espaces culturels, littéraires et poétiques. Traduction et auto-traduction exemplifient les procédés propres à l’écriture poétique arpienne au niveau intralinguistique. Un premier exemple montre que la traduction est l’occasion pour Arp d’introduire un jeu avec l’héritage poétique symboliste français, avec l’importance attachée à musicalité et à la matérialité visuelle, spatiale des mots – à leur volume plastique. Deuxièmement, la traduction depuis une langue fictive, l’ibolithique, permet non plus un jeu sur le dépaysement, mais le réinvestissement du mythe littéraire de l’Arcadie pour faire rejaillir une langue archaïque, libérée des conventions humaines.
