Latin Epigraphy, Roma, Latium adiectum

I rapporti tra poesia letteraria ed epigrafica nel territorio del Latium adiectum; vengono proposte alcune riflessioni sull'utilità dell'uso integrato di banche dati come Musisque deoque, Memorata poetis, EDR, Epigraphik-Datenbank Clauss Slaby. Analisi approfondita di CLE 12, 56 e 376.

Starting from a revision of the reading of the so called “Trivia”-inscriptions (found in Marica’s sanctuary at the mouth of Garigliano river and dating from the end of the 6th or the beginning of 5th century BC), this contribution proposes a new interpretation: the long Latin inscription scratched inside the bowl is at the same time a votive dedication of the bowl and a set of vases as well as a request of protection for the offerer and his companions (sokioi); the term trivoial, “belonging to Trivia”, consecrates both the bowl and its dedicator to the goddess, protecting them from the danger of theft and slavery (nei pari med, “don’t buy me”), but avoiding the contamination with a chthonic cult.
In the reconstruction of the archaic Auruncan Marica’s cult and of the historical frame of archaic relationships among peoples, the article analyzes Greek and Latin literary sources, in order to understand the special worship paid by the inhabitants of Minturnae to their goddess, which forbade “to bring away anything which had been brought in her sanctuary” (as stated by Plutarch). This tabu granted protection to strangers and fugitives too, as showed by the story of Marius, who tried to hide in the Marica’s swamp and escaped to murder.
So the interpretation of the epigraphic text throws light on the phenomenon of hospitality in pre-Roman Italy and on its sacred values, as demonstrated by the Italic name scratched on the external wall of the bowl, which probably belongs to a Minturnian family who gave hospitality to the Latin author of the dedication.

This short paper has been presented at a congress in Orvieto in 2008 and resumes somehow the results of the whole course of studies, as it derives from the comparison between Latin and south-Etruscan writing systems (specifically those used in Caere and Veii).
The new research on Latin archaic writing has been carried on by means of a new innovatory method of classification of alphabetic signs, based upon a graphic representation of associations of different sings in each inscription (similar to the incidence matrix in mathematics). From this method of representation derives a seriation system of inscriptions, which highlights the evolution of writing and the different phases of appearance/disappearance of alphabetic signs.
The work has been completed systematically on the entire corpus of Latin inscriptions since the 7th till the 5th century and allowed to recognize some trends in the use of writing in archaic Latium and to define specific features of Roman archaic writing system. Finally, the comparison with Veian and Caeretan alphabets during the 6th and 5th century allows the historical reconstruction of Etruscan influence on Roman culture in the last monarchical and the early republican period.

Analisi delle tre epigrafi metriche note di Ferentinum. Riguardo a CIL X 5844, viene riesaminato il costume, squisitamente italico, della distribuzione di mulsum e crustula e si propongono alcune riflessioni sulle modalità di produzione ed esposizione di epigrafi ‘pubblicitarie’ nell’antichità; si illustrano altresì i tratti della consistente cultura letteraria dell’anonimo poeta, con ogni probabilità influenzato dalla recente poesia marzialiana. Iscrizioni onorarie in poesia sembrano essere anche CIL X 5856 + 5859 e Suppl. It. I, Ferentinum 19.

There is a rather dense network of Roman (indicated) amphitheatres in the Eastern Adriatic seaboard which testify to the civilizational level of individual Roman cities. However, a relatively small number of these Roman cities have been archeologically researched, and among them there is an even smaller number of preserved structures that inherited these inscriptions, which directly pertains to the aforementioned Roman amphitheatres.* Therefore, this work shall only encompass those epigraphic monuments which testified to public construction
in the deep past, based on the example of Eastern Adriatic Roman
amphitheatres (inscriptiones publicae). This epigraphic material has been thematically and topographically classified according to the relevant archaeological sites. This material will also be of exceptional importance to the chronological attribution of certain amphitheatre in the Eastern Adriatic seaboard. Nevertheless, indicated amphitheatres such as those in the Roman colonies of Iader and Aequum and the legion camp Tilurium will not be considered in this work, since there is no entirely firm basis for a precise dating of the structures because they are under-researched.** According to the data available to this author, thus far no inscriptions have been found in the area of the Pola amphitheatre from the era of Roman rule that would speak
to the architectural aspect of this structure.

Karadeniz Ereğli Müzesi’nden Doğu Bithynia’daki Tios Kentine Ait İki Yeni Miltaşı

Doğu Bithynia ile Batı Paphlagonia coğrafi bölgelerinin arasındaki geçiş güzergâhının kıyı kentlerinden olan Tios antik kenti, bugün Türkiye’nin Batı Karadeniz Bölgesi’ndeki Zonguldak İli’ne bağlı Çaycuma İlçesi’nin sınırlarındaki Filyos Beldesi’nde konumlanır. Kent, Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’ndeki Pontus et Bithynia Eyaleti’nin yol ağı üzerindedir. Kuzeydoğuda Amastris’e, iç bölgede ise güneyde Krateia-Flaviopolis ve güneybatıda Klaudiopolis kentlerine uzanan Roma yollarının kalıntıları bugün bazı noktalarda kısmen görülebilmektedir. Kente ait olup bu yol güzergâhlarının belli noktalarına yerleştirilmiş Roma miltaşlarından bazıları ise günümüze kadar ulaşmayı başarmış ve kayda geçmiştir. Makalede 2009–2010 yıllarında Tios kent merkezinin güneyindeki, Gökçebey İlçesi’nin, Bakacakkadı ve Üçburgu mevkilerinde, Filyos Nehri’nin kıyısında bulunmuş ve Karadeniz Ereğli Müzesi’ne taşınmış ve Tios kentinin güneyine uzanan yola ait olan iki yeni miltaşı tanıtılmaktadır. Miltaşlarından ilki Septimius Severus (Caracalla ve Geta) Dönemi’nde eyalet valiliği yapan Quintus Tineius Sacerdos tarafından diktirilmiştir ve Latince-Hellence olmak üzere çiftdillidir. Miltaşı ve yazıtı kepçe darbelerinden kısmen zarar görmüştür ve şu anda üç büyük ve birkaç küçük parçaya dağılmış halde Müze deposunda korunmaktadır. Latince yazılmış ikinci miltaşı ise Caracalla Dönemi’ne aittir. Krateia-Flaviopolis veya Klaudiopolis’e uzanan yola ait olan her iki miltaşının yazıtlarının çevirileri sırasıyla şöyledir:
1. «Arap Fatihi, Adiabene Fatihi, Büyük Parth Fatihi, en yüce rahip, altıncı kez tribunus yetkisine haiz, onbirinci kez imparator, ikinci kez consul, vatanın babası, proconsul olan İmparator Caesar Lucius Septimius Severus Pius Pertinax Augustus; ikinci kez tribunus yetkisine haiz İmparator Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus ve Publius Septimius Geta Caesar, Augustus’ların eyaletteki praetor mertebesinde temsilcisi Quintus Tineius Sacerdos aracılığıyla (yolu) onarttılar. Il territorio del Latium adiectum, non lontano dal centro del potere Roma, è caratterizzato da una notevole varietà di ambienti socio-economici e culturali, dalle zone costiere (con le attività legate al porto di Minturnae) a quelle interne, che da Velitrae si estendono a sud, lungo le valli del Sacco e del Liri e quelle circonvicine (vie d’accesso importanti all’Urbe), ove sorgevano centri che avevano un’intensa vita municipale come Anagnia, Verulae, Ferentinum, Fabrateria Vetus e Nova, Arpinum, Aquinum, Atina, fino all’area di Casinum, ricca di acque e di attività produttive e commerciali. In questa regione la cultura epigrafica fu vivace: tra le moltissime note, alcune decine di iscrizioni (all’incirca 40) sono metriche e spaziano dall’ultimo secolo della Repubblica alla Tarda Antichità (in senari, esametri, distici elegiaci, faleci, forse in saturni…); esse costituiscono l’oggetto di questa pubblicazione. Nell’Introduzione vengono fornite alcune informazioni sul territorio e la sua storia socioculturale nel corso dei secoli: vengono anche illustrati i caratteri della produzione epigrafica e i criteri seguiti per la presente edizione. Segue il testo e la traduzione dei Carmina Latina Epigraphica: essi sono numerati e ordinati in sequenza cronologica (le epigrafi di incerta datazione o di dubbia natura metrica perché troppo frammentarie saranno pubblicate nel secondo volume, che sarà dedicato alle epigrafi poetiche dal III al VI saec. d.C. inclusi); il testo è controllato (ove non sia stata possibile un’autopsia) sulle più affidabili edizioni e sulle fotografie del reperto, quando esse siano disponibili. Subito dopo il testo, si propone un ampio commento in cui ad un inquadramento storico e monumentale del reperto segue una discussione sulle caratteristiche metriche e della lingua poetica, nei suoi legami con la poesia letteraria ed epigrafica, sui temi sviluppati in rapporto alla destinazione (funeraria, votiva, celebrativa etc.). L’autore è un filologo classico e intende analizzare questi testi soprattutto in rapporto alla tradizione poetica letteraria ed epigrafica: il contributo vuole essere anche di natura metodologica. Tramontata ormai da tempo l’epoca in cui i carmina epigrafici venivano considerati in posizione ‘ancillare’ rispetto alla poesia letteraria, di cui riprendevano in maniera giudicata pedissequa (se non goffa) temi e lingua, negli ultimi decenni si è passati a considerare l’autonomia di funzione culturale dell’epigrafe in versi, il rapporto in realtà di osmosi che, in determinati generi poetici e sfere tematiche, esiste tra ambito letterario ed epigrafico, la ricchezza di informazioni che possono derivare dalla lettura dei CLE riguardo alla cultura non solo poetica, ma in senso più vasto letteraria e retorica di un territorio e di un’epoca, o riguardo alla vitalità e agli interessi della scuola. Non si considerano più come fossero il riflesso frammentario e degradato di una malintesa e mal assimilata versificazione ‘culta’ tutte quelle epigrafi (le celebri ‘commatiche’ di Buecheler) che spesso sono semplicemente in una prosa retoricamente più ricercata, con iuncturae poetizzanti e marcate caratteristiche ‘affettive’. La filologia dei testi letterari classici (soprattutto, ma non solo, quella relativa agli auctores che più hanno influenzato i CLE: gli scenici ed Ennio epico in età repubblicana, Virgilio, gli elegiaci e Ovidio, Lucano, Marziale, Stazio e gli epici d’età flavia in epoca imperiale) può molto guadagnare dall’analisi di questi testi, se essi sono così interpretati. Chiudono il primo tomo la bibliografia e un index locorum, mentre nel secondo è previsto anche un index rerum.

Rupestrian structures of the Roman age in the territory of Terracina (Southern Lazio)

This paper mainly involves an unprecedented catalogue of sacred and funerary structures but also infrastructures such as aqueducts and pathways that were dug into the karst rocks between the middle of the Republican period and the beginning of the Empire. In all the previous research, the focus was only on the inscriptions engraved in the rock, but now also even anepigraphic structures carved in the rock have been studied as well.

Il volume affronta i temi della natura, distribuzione, cronologia e tipologia delle ville che popolavano le campagne del Latium adiectum, tra il II sec. a.C. e l’età imperiale.
Dati desunti dal censimento bibliografico, dallo spoglio delle fonti e da ricognizioni di superficie sono stati raccolti in un catalogo corredato da tavole dei singoli territori e da una carta d’unione, in cui sono schedati sistematicamente le ville urbano-rustiche e gli insediamenti interpretati come tali.
L’approfondimento effettuato su un limitato ma sufficiente ed affidabile campione di edifici ha permesso di ricostruire forme e modelli delle ville dotate di pars urbana, nel quadro dinamico della loro comparsa, vita ed evoluzione in un territorio dai mille volti, che si distingue fin dall’antichità per lo straordinario potenziale economico e per la bellezza dei suoi paesaggi.
