En este trabajo se investiga la relación existente entre el tamaño corporal y la abundancia de las especies de macromamíferos representadas en el yacimiento pleistoceno de Venta Micena, utilizando el modelo tafonómico de Damuth. Los resultados obtenidos indican que durante la fosilización se conservó parcialmente la estructura de la comunidad original y que los sesgos tafonómicos acontecidos se deberían, principalmente, a los procesos de meteorización durante la etapa de exposición de los restos esqueléticos previa a su enterramiento definitivo. Estos procesos destructivos afectaron diferencialmente a los restos según su superficie relativa, por lo que se produjo una mayor perdida de información en el caso de aquellas especies de menor tamaño. 

Groundwater inflows showing notable natural radioactivity
have been found at the northern end of the Holešovice cable
tunnel close to the Čimice Grove. This groundwater originates from
the Barrandian Neoproterozoic slates of the Blovice accretionary
complex, Belt I (Šárka-Zbiroh Belt) at depths approximately
100 meters below the surface, occurring along 50 meter profile of
the cable tunnel. Water springs are dispersed in the spring area, with
the total discharge of 2 L/s. Groundwater is cold (T ~ 11.1 – 12.3 °C),
neutral (pH ~ 6 – 7.48), suboxic to oxic (Eh (ORPH) ~ 177 up to 418 mV),
of a hydrochemical type Ca-Mg-HCO3, total mineralization being
around 702 mg/L. Radon activity (222Rn) varies between 415 and
1195 Bq/L and radium activity (226Ra) ranges between 0.18 and
5.3 Bq/L. Activities of Rn and Ra are relatively high. Currently, this is
the most radioactive water within Prague agglomeration. This water
is relatively aggressive as well, causing damage to the concrete
lining of the cable tunnel and also allowing formation of calcite
precipitates with an increased radium (226Ra) activity.

The ability to produce large cutting tools (LCTs) is considered as the technological marker of the Acheulean and the indicator of a greater technological complexity compared to the previous Oldowan. Although Acheulean techno-complexes are also composed of a concurrent core-and-flake technology, the iconic handaxes have attracted more attention than any other lithic component. Consequently, little is known of the small and medium-sized flake productions (small flaking), especially starting from 1 Ma, when handaxe and cleaver manufacture becomes intensive and widespread across Africa, including the Atlantic coastal regions of Morocco. ABSTRACTThe Pont‐de‐Lavaud site, located in the Centre Region of France (Creuse Valley), yielded a quartz lithic assemblage composed of a few hundred artefacts with cores, pebble tools, flakes and flake‐tools, mixed with several thousand debris items and pebbles. The archaeological site is covered by a fossil fluvial deposit from the Creuse River (sheet I, with a relative altitude of + 90/105 m), dated by Electron Spin Resonance at the site itself to around 1 Ma. We will focus in this paper on the lithic assemblage with clear anthropogenic features to describe the technological strategies applied to quartz pebbles, with the help of experiments. The onset of the Middle Pleistocene (780 ka) in the European continent is associated with significant environmental variations (Middle Pleistocene Revolution), innovative behavioural strategies (bifacial productions, land-use patterns, raw material management) and a global increase in the archaeological evidence from 600 ka onward. Whether these changes are related to the rise of the Acheulean, the informative potential carried by these contexts is currently being explored through multidisciplinary approaches, allowing us to infer the role of these sites and the type of activities conducted. Presentamos los resultados obtenidos durante la primera intervención arqueológica en el yacimiento paleontológico del Chaparral (Villaluenga del Rosario, Cádiz), situado en el medio kárstico del Parque Natural de la Sierra de Grazalema, donde se han identificado taxones de macro y microfauna del Pleistoceno Inferior con representación de carnívoros, herbívoros ungulados, roedores, anfibios y reptiles. El estudio tafonómico nos muestra que la acumulación de fauna es debido a una fractura kárstica que actuó de trampa natural.

Se ha efectuado un análisis de la complejidad relativa de las suturas craneanas presentes en el fragmento de hueso occipital humano proveniente del yacimiento pleistocénico de Venta Micena (Orce, Granada), usando los métodos de la geometría fractal (Mandelbrot, 1983). El estudio comparativo se ha efectuado analizando también las suturas de diversos primates (homínidos, póngidos y cercopitécidos) y de otros dos grupos de mamíferos (équidos y rumiantes). La complejidad de los diseños suturales se estimó calculando su dimensión fractal, mediante el programa FRACTAL-D (Slice, 1989). Los resultados obtenidos indican que la dimensión fractal de las suturas del fragmento craneal de Orce queda comprendida dentro del entorno de variación de los representantes infantiles del género Homo analizados. This piece of work has applied Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) with the aim of understanding Rosières-la Terre-des-Sablons site’s subsoil. This site, placed in a Middle Cher Valley’s fossil terrace has been dated in 0.8-1.1 My, fact that has been confirmed by the mode 1 lithic industry found in it. Once distinguished one from each other the different resistivity values of the different materials present at the site, the subsoil could be characterized contributing to a better understanding of the geological formation of the site, as well as giving ideas of the strategies to follow in the future of the excavation. Test drillings have calibrated the results and showed the suitability of the method applied to the given problematic.
