Luxury Houses

Under the influence of capitalism, which dominates the world, housing has become a commodity first, and then it has become a symbol of prestige. The phenomenon of conspicuous consumption put forward by Veblen is the basis of the existence of the luxury condominiums that are becoming more prominent in the cities today. This article aims to show that people pay high prices to live in a luxury high-rise condo and present it as an indicator of prestige in their lives. For this purpose, firstly, the theoretical dimension of the conspicuous consumption and residence preference of the people, has been put forward by literature research. Subsequently, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with a total of 58 people in seven different luxury high-rise condo in Istanbul. Data from the field are discussed in the context of 'Veblen's conspicuous consumption theory. As a result, it has been shown that luxury high-rise condos in Istanbul are conspicuous consumption elements within the scope of Veblen's theory.

Özellikle son yıllarda İstanbul ve diğer büyük şehirlerde tüke-  m nesnesi olarak ortaya çıkan ve yeni bir yaşam tarzı sunan önemli yapı  plerinden biri de rezidanslardır. Rezidans kav- ramı yapı sektöründe yaygın olarak kullanılmakla birlikte, bu kavram ile tanımlanan yapıların kullanım amacı, yapıldığı yıl, yapıldığı yer ve hedef kitle bağlamında farklılıklar gösterdiği gözlemlenmektedir. Bu nedenle kavramın farklı disiplinler ve kullanıcılar tara ndan sıklıkla kullanıldığı, bununla birlikte ta- nımının tam olarak yapılmadığı, sözlük anlamının ötesine geç- miş bir kavram olarak nitelendirilebileceği söylenebilir. Bu ma- kalede karma fonksiyonlu yapı  pleri içinde yer alan rezidans- ların tanımının mimar, ya rımcı, gayrimenkul pazarlama uz- manları ve kullanıcılar üzerinden yapılması hede enmekte ve İstanbul’da rezidansların oluşumunu ve tercih edilmesini te k- leyen faktörlerin tar şılması amaçlanmaktadır.

In recent years, par cularly in Istanbul and other major ci es, the important building type that o ers a new lifestyle, as ob- jects of consump on, is residences. The concept of residence that has been widely used in the construc on sector accommo- dates a variety of di erent meanings according to the de ned building’s intended use, construc on year, construc on place, and target users. Even if the concept is o en used across the di erent disciplines, its de ni on is s ll not fully de ned and goes beyond the lexical meaning. Therefore, it was intended in this study to de ne “residence” over di erent partners in the construc on sector, as architects, investors, real estate mar- ke ng experts, and users. It was also aimed to iden fy reasons for the forma on and preferences of residences and to discuss the results in the context of Istanbul.
