There has been significant proliferation of churches in North-Central Nigeria between 1984 and 2014 with the growth of the proliferation of Pentecostal denominations. There have also been significant security threats such as bomb attacks and gun attacks on public buildings and places with high population gatherings such as motor parks, markets and churches in Northern Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, when the terrorist attacks took a religious dimension. It is gradually becoming a norm to find churches taking different active security measures to protect their members and properties during church programmes. The debate amongst architects involved in church designs is how to provide passive security in church designs, thereby making the building secured and provide a sense of security to its users. The introduction of different security measures within and around the building and premises is an attempt at passive security in existing churches. The aim of this paper is to examine the pe...

Man has been a wanderer right from time inception, moving about in search of food and shelter. Building as a shelter is as old as man, also different buildings perform different functions or uses to man. Some buildings have only one function, while some have multiple functions and they are known as ‘Mixed-use building’. One major problem encountered with these type of structures is the issue of parking, caused as a result of either; the design, the building occupying the whole site, the residents/users of the building, or standard laws (rules and regulation) guarding the area. This paper aims at assessing the efficiency parking space in mixed-use buildings, which can be achieved through analysing the quantity and sizes of the parking spaces provided, estimating the number of car users’, and ascertaining the perception of users’ on the available parking space. The methodology employed involves a purpotive sampling method, where the sample population to be studied were selected due to...

Tropicalizing a building might seem like the best option for a young architect who lands in the tropics, but this is an approach contrary to sustainability. Claude Laurens, through one of his first projects in Congo, understood that it was better to deal with the place from the start. His project became one of the best examples of tropical modernism. The article attempts to contrast an import approach with a more sustainable one, to deal with the present and future context. The research method adopted for this study was a mixed method approach where data was sourced from literature as secondary source and compared with direct observation of the selected case study (The Sabena Towers). The results are presented as figures which were used to further illustrate findings. The result showed that the architect, with little information, did his utmost to offer Congo a new architecture that fitted with the objectives of sustainable development. The study concluded that the architect chose n...

The tropical region is often considered as a region where the sun shines intensely and the temperature varies at certain times of the year. In the case of Congo, the average weather condition is considered cool, however, there have been cases where the temperature reached up to 43° C. It is therefore imperative for buildings in this region to take into account the temperature variation while considering the comfort of the users. During the design and construction of the Bank of Belgian Congo, the availability of data to assist the architect Maurice Houyoux in meeting the challenge of the region was unavailable. The architect had to be creative in planning and overcoming the challenges posed by the environment. This paper seeks to examine the issues confronted by Maurice Houyoux and the design solutions he provided to ensure that the building was functional and responded to the tropical challenges. In undertaking this study, a historical approach was adopted through the review of rel...

Some individuals are born with a deformity also known as disability whereas others may become permanently or temporarily disabled over the course of their lives. Buildings should not be made to judge who comes in and goes out of its spaces. A good design must be accessible to all individuals, especially when discussing public buildings. An educational building is a public building and "education for all" is a common dictum that refers to all individuals irrespective of current status. Disabled individuals especially those in wheelchairs have special needs and requirements however, most Institutional buildings do not portray this equality with regards to their design; instead these designs ostracize individuals with disabilities. A survey was carried out on the existing special educational facility and forty four (44) randomly selected institutions of learning located in Minna, the capital of Niger State. They were further categorised based on funding; Federal, state or privately funded institutions. The survey showed that individuals with physical disabilities in Minna were not attending the special educational school and even if they were, facilities were not put in place to accommodate them also, despite the support by the Nigerian government on the equalisation of opportunities for people with disabilities, the public educational system have yet to factor in or retrofit designs to suit disabled individuals in their designs. This paper further highlighted these abnormalities in design and probable causes and concluded by recommending possible solutions.

Migration of people to urban areas from the rural areas usually comes with its challenges in terms of infrastructural requirement and housing to cater for growing population. One of the challenge for the urban dwellers in Nigeria is that of adequate housing. The inability of the government to meet this demand has seen the people concerned seeking alternative solutions to housing need. The resulting settlements are usually unplanned hence becoming a challenge for government to manage in terms of providing infrastructure facilities. With the growing incidence of global warming and the attendant increase in flooding in most urban areas of Nigeria, especially between year 2000 and 2013, the safety of the people who live in slums have become a concern to the state governments due to issues of flooding and collapsed buildings. Government usually evicts such people and clear the settlement; however the people simply relocate to another area. The aim of this paper is to examine how communit...

Projects, theses and dissertations submitted to the library form the highest number of collections in most academic library holdings in Nigeria. Ensuring that such works are free from plagiarism becomes imperative for future use and reuse. In an attempt to help stem this ugly trend of plagiarism, the Nigerian Universities Commission directed that all Universities in Nigeria should adopt the use of Turnitin plagiarism checker. This study seeks to determine the perception, challenges, and support systems available for students regarding the use of Turnitin in Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMin). There are 3,033 final year undergraduate students in the 2017/2018 academic session. Using Krejcie & Morgan sample size table, 341 undergraduates and eleven (11) Turnitin Officers were randomly sampled across Departments and Schools (Faculties) in FUTMin. Structured questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. A total of 338 (99%) copies of questionnaire from undergra...

The increase in globalization of the marketplace, rising economic competition, population growth and environmental challenges ranging from climate change to air pollution and flooding to rising energy costs, sustainability has become a key requirement in the design of office buildings regardless of their location. The demand for office buildings is high in many tertiary institutions and the use of open spaces have not been fully utilised in the design of building in them. The challenges of climate change have made it evident that courtyards alone should not be seen as the only open space in office buildings for responding to climate issues. The growing demand for energy efficient buildings requires a greater responsibility of architects today and in the future to rise up to the call. The aim of the study is to examine the utilization of open spaces in office building of tertiary institutions with the view to determine how they can be used to improve the sustainability of office buil...

Received December 13, 2014 The abattoir as a meat processing industry world-wide is saddled with the responsibility of maintaining good standards of hygiene in terms of waste management. Wastes are generated in diverse forms in abattoirs, these include, solid or semi-solid wastes, liquid wastes and gases. If these effluents or contaminants are not adequately and efficiently managed, the negative impact on the residential environs and human health cannot be overemphasized. Hygiene must be key in all abattoir operations. This research evaluated the impact of waste effluent from selected abattoirs on residential environs in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria. Primary data was gathered through the observation method. While the secondary data was gathered from related literatures. Data analysis by simple statistical methods showed a significant relationship between poor waste management and bad environmental impact. This study concludes that good waste management is key to good residential envi...

The paper examined selected data requirements for housing provision in selected housing estates as applicable to house owners with the view of determining the degree of relevance to mass housing provision. The research employed a mixed method approach by collecting both quantitative and qualitative data which were analysed using descriptive analysis in SPSS. The results are presented in tables, charts and figures to illustrate the data developed. The result showed that a significant percentage of the people living in these estates are tenants and cannot afford to pay for the ownership of the houses. It also showed that the houses were not built based on any data obtained from prospective house owners hence the constant desire to make changes. The paper concludes that the housing provision as currently practised is not socially sustainable as it does not rely on data from the prospective house owners. It therefore recommends that for future housing estate developments, prospective ho...

The design of skill centre around the country is such that they are specific to particular skill type and usually the buildings cannot be used for another activity. The need to use spaces for multiple functions has ensured that flexible spaces in skill acquisition centres are designed such that the spaces can easily be varied into smaller discrete and scalable sizes. This paper examined the interior spaces for pedagogical and didactic activities in six selected skills acquisition centres in Benue state. The issue of the rigidity of spaces occurring as product of the building design which is meant to serve a required function usually ensures that spaces are less flexible and in many cases unusable for other functions. Nigeria is faced with several risks ranging from problems of climate change to security challenges and this is not limited to a specific aspect of the built environment as all buildings and environment are affected. The places of worship are greatly affected in terms of security which affects the disposition of Christians during worship at churches. Many of the studied churches were seen to have made use of landscape elements but these were not placed with the aim of using them to deter intrusion as in the case of security but rather for beautifying the church. The challenge for architects and church administrator is how to cope with challenges of security and climate change. This paper examines landscaping as a catalyst for deterring intrusion of threats passively and enhancing climate adaptation in church environment in Nigeria. This article traces an African Housing Renaissance through the Trabantenstadt (Satellite City) vision for Kigali embedded in the Gacuriro Valley Satellite, which is composed of two settlements (or umudugudu, in Kinyarwanda): Kigali 2020 (2001–2005) and Kigali Vision (2013–2016). While the Kigali 2020 is an integrated Trabant (Satellite) which is able to interact with the existing context and trace the future built and unbuilt developments, the Kigali Vision adopts the idea of a protected compound, morphologically connected with the older settlements, but unable to tackle and solve spatial and social issues due to its ‘defensive’ character. The particular topography of the hillside receives an ambivalent interpretation: in the first umudugudu, the slope inspires the whole project, an organic raumplan, and in the second it has been denied, having been leveled for flat houses’ foundations and consequently a flat spatial indoor distribution. The issue of security has become a burning topic and major concern for urban dwellers in many developing countries. The use of active security measures is no longer considered as adequate to forestall the security breaches in many public buildings. It is commonplace in urban areas in developing countries such as Nigeria to find that these public buildings having perimeter walls of solid walls. These practices constitute environmental challenges to the urban planners and the architects who design such buildings. In the case of Kigali, there has been a significant attempt to create a blend of the environment with security walls through the design of the perimeter fences of public buildings. The advantages of these concepts have different approaches which could be adapted for different situations. This article aims to examine the nature of the hybrid fences designs in use in public buildings in Kigali with the view of suggesting advantageous ones for application to ensure environmental sustainability in Nigeria. The research method adopted is a qualitative approach using case studies of selected public buildings in Kigali and buildings in Abuja, Nigeria. The design of these fences would be examined and the different options identified. A comparative analysis would be drawn from the two cities and the areas of applications of the solutions from Kigali would be proposed. The study would conclude that the approach of hybrid green fences in Kigali offers the best advantage of security as it allows for visual contact and serves as the passive role of environmental sustainability while ensuring aesthetic value for the buildings. The article would recommend that architects incorporate the concept of hybrid green fences in the overall design of the public buildings and not as a secondary development.

Nevertheless, this article argues that despite the evident architectural differences between the two settlements, they remain in the tradition of the Neues Bauen, in which mass housing represents the physical way of accommodating different social classes, granting equal and favorable living conditions. The typological variety demonstrates the aim to inclusively target distinct segments of the population. Apartment buildings (condominiums), row houses, twin houses and single houses mixed with public facilities, schools, a church, and sports structures, make up the settlements as unique pieces of a system and, at the same time, a singular whole.

Filling stations are retail outlets where automobiles are refuelled, lubricated and serviced aside other retail
activities, hence it creates few environmental issues. The aim of this study is to assess the degree of
application of environmental sustainability design requirements filling stations provision. The study
examined 50 filling stations out of the total population of 78 in Minna, using a purposive sampling method
that was based on filling stations with minimum of six pumps. A checklist that captured the studied
variables was administered on the selected filling stations that were divided into three zones. The data
collected was analysed using descriptive statistical tools in SPSS and the results are presented in charts and
tables. The use of plates was to show physical description of some of the issues observed in the study. The
results revealed over 90% of filling stations did not make design considerations for environmental
sustainability of the filling station at the design stage. The results also show that 84% of the filling stations
were situated on plots that were less than 50m by 100m which made it difficult to achieve environmental
sustainability within the stations. The study equally revealed that only 2% of the filling stations studied
made use of photovoltaic system as alternative source of energy for the running of the filling station. It was
also observed that the filling stations had the opportunity to adapt their station to environmentally
sustainable design features which should have helped improve the overall sustainability of the filling station
and it environment. It is recommended that the design of filling stations should adhere to the
Environmental Impact Assessment report and also ensure that the buildings located within them are
environmentally friendly through the incorporation of design features that support eco-friendliness. It is
also recommended that there is need for filling station owners and the architects involved in the designs of
filling stations to explore sustainability design issues in their provision in order to ensure a healthier and
safer environment.

The introduction of different security measures within and around the building and premises is an attempt at passive security in existing churches. The aim of this paper is to examine the perception of the church users with the type of security system in place in their church so as to determine opportunities for architects to improve the security of the church. The research made use of both observation schedule and questionnaire to obtain data from the field. The data was analysed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel packages. The results showed that church users are not satisfied with the current security measures in their churches. The paper concluded that a passive security approach method be adopted to church designs and retrofitting. INTRODUCTION The church has undergone several definitions and interpretations often based on the denomination or the person in charge of the worshipers, that is, either by the Pastor, Bishop or Reverend. A common factor with the Christian worshipers is that they require a place to gather and worship God based on their faith. There are cases in northern part of Nigeria where the church denominations had to rent buildings for their place of worship; usually they rent large halls in hotels, civic centres and warehouses. These buildings are simply remodelled or decorated to serve the purpose of worship during the church service; the buildings cannot be tempered with structurally to provide passive security. The Christian denominations with its purpose built church usually have total control over what happens on the buildings, the church designs have been used to create some form of identity and to serve as an icon representing their believe. According to Marsh & Walter (n.d), the church should be about the people however, the building has impact on the worshiper and the owner of the ministry. This could be viewed as a reason why many churches pay significant attention on the building, be it interior or exterior. The challenge for many architects who are involved in the design of churches is that of meeting the demand of space and identity creation. In the creation of identity for a church the architects usually compete with other churches in creating a design that stands outs. The church members usually feel attached to the building hence they feel it should be grandiose, according to Christ Church Central (2013) the church building is usually considered as an asset to the church members.

The research methodology adopted for the study was mixed method. Data was obtained using an observation schedule and a questionnaire. The data was cross tabulated with SPSS 17 and using descriptive statistic. The research was able to determine the relationship among variable and the frequency of occurrence of others. Result obtained presented in charts and plate. The study reveals that the traditional open spaces in tertiary institution buildings are courtyards and they are not designed to counter the effect of climate change. The paper concludes by recommending that smaller open spaces can be fused into office designs to improve utilization and cater for climate change problems. INTRODUCTION Man has continuous interacted with his environment and as technology improved, the mode of interaction with the environment has changed over time with its attendant effects of the built environment. The quest for formal education has affected the number of tertiary institutions provided in Nigeria, the buildings are gradually becoming less sustainable because of the changing climate man is experiencing. According to Obabori, Ekpu and Ojealaro (2009), the developing processes developed by man that cut across all spheres of human endeavour has had significant impact on the environment and that all activities undertaken by man regardless of the sector, there is an accompanying negative effect on the environment. It further stated that the construction industry has had high significant impact on the environment and that these effects are felt from the moment the construction begins and throughout the life time of the building as long as it is put to use. The unpleasant impact could be traced to the lack of adequate and proper control measures put in places to control and ameliorate the impacts that negatively affected the environment. In Nigeria, whose climate is characterised by sharp difference between temperature and humidity during the day and night times and even through the year, the need for sustainable buildings is most significant in order to ensure building users comfort. The interior temperature of buildings at certain periods during the year in some parts of Nigeria is believed to be above the level that many users of public buildings considered as favourable for them while inside the building which therefore, affects the time they would spend within it (Akande, Fabiyi, & Mark, 2015). In order to meet the demand for thermal comfort as it affects the users of building interiors, there is need to create avenues for natural form of cooling large spaces such as the office buildings where they depend on mechanical cooling system (Charles, Reardon, & Magee, 2005). This need is even required more in faculty buildings offices that provide pedagogy services to students in order to acquire knowledge in various fields. It is common to find most

The design of office buildings and other buildings in tertiary institutions have mainly been determined by the management of the institutions with little or no input from the end users. It is expected of any building design that the building suits the needs of the users and not the users adapting to the building. The nature of work and facilities being used by the staff has also changed with the adoption of ICT facilities. The most significant change that has affected the office design is the increase in staff population in many tertiary institutions, which has increased the number of shared offices and an increase in number of staff per office. It can be observed that despite these changes in office use and capacities, there has not been any change in the design of newer offices. The problem therefore is that users of offices are finding it increasingly difficult to perform their duties conveniently due to the degree of adaptation they could adjust to within the building. The aim of this research is to examine the user satisfaction with the flexibility of offices spaces. The research method adopted is mixed method with the use of structured questionnaire and observation schedule. The data would be analysed using SPSS software and the results transferred to Microsoft Excel. The results will show that the users of offices in tertiary institutions are not satisfied with the office spaces. It will also reveal that space flexibility will improve user satisfaction with office. The paper will conclude that to achieve space flexibility in offices there is need to group functions properly.

An examination of selected low income mass housing schemes built by government and private developers in Nigeria reveal a similarity amongst them, which is lack of involvement of house owners. The design process adopted for these houses showed that mass housing schemes designs have been based on the assumptions of user needs. The degree of importance users placed on the various aspects of the houses was never considered. In the 100 years of Nigeria’s development between 1914 and 2014 there has been significant changes in many sectors, however the nature of the houses being built in mass housing schemes across the country remain the same. The problem with the assumption method of housing provision is that the target peoples’ needs and desires are never achieved even with the change in government policy towards housing provision. The aim of this paper is to determine the level of importance placed on different aspects of housing by the house owners. The research made use of mixed research method by using questionnaire and observation method in gathering the data from field surveys in Niger State and Kwara State. The perception of the house owners was collated and SPSS was used to analyze the data. The results showed that house owners placed high importance on some aspects of the houses measured. The research concludes that there is need for a drastic change from the design process in mass housing provision in Nigeria as Nigeria marks its 100 years. The change should be towards designing for user focused housing designs.

Some individuals are born with a deformity also known as disability whereas others may  become permanently or temporarily disabled over the course of their lives. Buildings should not be made to  judge who comes in and goes out of its spaces.  A good design must be accessible to all individuals, especially  when discussing public buildings.  An educational building is a public building and “education for all” is a  common dictum that refers to all individuals irrespective of current status.

Increasingly, concerns about the need to improve the level of accessibility of buildings for the aged and the  physically challenged in the built environment especially in public buildings have been raised. This study is aimed at assessing  the effectiveness of ramp designs in the Federal Capital Territory Area of Abuja, Nigeria. An adaptive survey was deployed to  selected public buildings to generate recommendations for change and improvement. The findings indicate that there are  several shortcomings associated with ramp characteristics, landing and handrail provisions in the public buildings studied. The  study recommends redesigning of existing ramps to achieve desired standards, and the adherence of prospective designs to  desired needs of users to ensure ease of accessibility within the built environment. When implemented, it will eventually allow  the elderly and physically challenged move easily, safely and enjoy the great variety of opportunities and experiences existing  in the City.

Abstract  Natural ventilation provides the needed amount of good air quality through a natural process of allowing air in and out of buildings through the windows in order to achieve thermal comfort. There has been poor ventilation problem in hotels due to choice of windows which causes sick building syndrome. This research is aimed at specifying window types for effective ventilation in hotels. This is to be achieved through ascertaining of the window types used in hotels, ascertaining the window sizes used in hotels and to analyse the various window types in order to specify the effective types for hotels. In carrying out the objectives, two hotels were selected from each of the three senatorial zones in Taraba State where primary data were collected from a total of six selected hotels through direct observation. Secondary data in relation to natural ventilation and window types were gotten through review of literature. The data collected were analysed, using descriptive statistics. Findings and deduction were made. The concluding part of this research highlights the need and importance of using window types that provide the maximum ventilation in hotel rooms and other spaces. Recommendations were made for windows with high ventilation percentage to be used in hotels for effective ventilation. Abstract Man has been a wanderer right from time inception, moving about in search of food and shelter. The methodology employed involves a purpotive sampling method, where the sample population to be studied were selected due to the mixed-use criteria met by the selected buildings. Data was collected through questionnaires and personal observation. Recommendations were made that various means of achieving an efficient parking space in a mixed-use building or development, such as; the provision of the right parking spaces to the functions performed ratio, during the design stage, also, the issue of shared parking in order to reduce too much usage of scarce land for parking lots should be well planned.    Keywords: building, design, mixed-use, parking facility, shared parking
