MAJOLICA

Świat ceramiki to bogactwo form i kolorów. tworzy go porcelana malowana ręcznie, zdobiona kalką ceramiczną, wyroby kamionkowe z charakterystycznym zdobieniem stempelkowym, wyroby porcelitowe pokryte barwnymi szkliwami, często ozdobione dodatkowo kalką ceramiczną i najbardziej kolorowa, najbogatsza wzorniczo - majolika. Nazwa majolika wywodzi się od włoskiej nazwy Majorki - Isola di Maiolica, gdzie w wiekach średnich rozkwitała arabsko-mauretańska sztuka garncarska. W XIV i XV wieku Majorka stała się punktem zbiorczym ceramiki hiszpańskiej przeznaczonej na eksport do Włoch. W piśmiennictwie nazwa ta została po raz pierwszy użyta w roku 1548 przez Włocha Cipriano Picolpasso w traktacie Trzy księgi o sztuce garncarza (Li tre libri dell'arte del vasajo). Dotyczyła wyłącznie naczyń pokrytych białym szkliwem cynowym o metalicznym odblasku. Rozwój majoliki związany jest przede wszystkim z kręgiem kultury hiszpańsko-mauretańskiej. Okres XIII-XV wieku to czas jej rozkwitu w Hiszpanii. Wyroby majolikowe wtedy powstałe to głównie naczynia i duże pojemniki, najbardziej znane-albarello, czyli naczynie apteczne o kształcie przypominającym cząstkę łodygi bambusa oraz płytki ceramiczne przeznaczone do elewacji i dekoracji wnętrz, zwane azulejo. Technika produkcji azulejo została opracowana i wprowadzona na Półwysep Iberyjski przez Maurów. Na przełomie XV i XVI wieku technologia ich produkcji dotarła do Portugalii, kraju z długą tradycją w dziedzinie wyrobu ceramiki. W końcu XVI wieku przestaje istnieć produkcja hiszpańsko-mauretańska. Tymczasem w XVI i XVII wieku wielką popularnością w krajach islamskich cieszył się Iznik, gdzie produkowane były inspirowane chińską porcelaną i utrzymane w odcieniach kobaltu ceramiczne płytki, najczęściej

A San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore, in provincia di Pescara, nel bellissimo Duomo con i campanili gemelli, dedicato ai S.S. Valentino e Damiano è presente la Via Crucis in maiolica del ceramista Rinaldo Pardi, nato a Castelli nel 1898, partecipò a numerosi concorsi per l'arte ceramica in Italia, lavorò a Civitavecchia, Grottammare, Busto Arsizio. Egli fu insegnante e titolare di una manifattura ceramica negli anni '40 con grande ammirazione da parte del pubblico per le sue doti artistiche. Un esponente di grande importanza della tradizione ceramica abruzzese, con soggetti che potevano variare dai paesaggi, momenti della vita quotidiana fino alle scene bibliche.

This paper presents ceramics excavated during the archaeological survey at the Wisłoujście Fortress in seasons 2013–2014. A total number of 7527 ceramics has been analysed and presented in the form of descriptions, statistics, tables, drawings and photographs. The assembly consists of numerous potsherds, candlestick, crucible, marbles, figurines and a bottle stopper. The assembly has been dated to the period between the 15th and 20th centuries. The presented ceramics were produced by local as well as by German, Dutch, Italian, English and Asian craftsmen. The coherent stratighraphical contexts of finding two sub-assemblages dated to the 18th and 19th centuries were examined. These particular artefacts were used by inhabitants of the Fortress during two different
geopolitical contexts. Results of the research prompt for further study in the field of the use of everyday objects by the fortress’ garrison.

In de periode van 27 mei tot en met 5 juli 2013 en 28 oktober tot en met 18 december is door ADC ArcheoProjecten op de locatie ‘Delftse Schie’ te Schiedam archeologisch onderzoek verricht, in de vorm van een opgraving en aangrenzend aan het plangebied, een begeleiding. Aanleiding voor beide onderzoeken vormde de voorgenomen bochtafsnijding van de Delftse Schie.

Tijdens het onderzoek zijn de restanten van de Oude dijk, dijksloot, terpachtige ophogingen en historische bebouwing aangetroffen. Tevens zijn vermoedelijk de resten van de dam gevonden die in de Schie werd aangelegd, ter voorbereiding van de bouw van de Oude dijk. De ontwikkeling van de bewoning binnen het gebied vond plaats in een landschap dat onder invloed van de mens langzaam veranderde van een natuurlijke omgeving naar een steeds meer gecultiveerde landschapsvorm. Steeds meer land werd voor de landbouw en veeteelt ingericht.

In de Romeinse tijd was het gebied al in gebruik en behoorde tot de periferie van een huisplaats, ten noorden van het plangebied. Romeinse sporen die binnen het plangebied zijn aangetroffen betroffen enkele smalle greppels die in het veen waren uitgegraven. In de periode erna vonden diverse overstromingen plaats en ontstond een uitgebreid veengebied.

Vanaf de 10e eeuw vonden regionale ontginningen plaats en kreeg het landschap langzaam een steeds opener karakter. In deze periode werden er in de omgeving granen, waaronder rogge op de akkers verbouwd. De ontginningen hadden echter wel tot gevolg, dat het land langzaam inklonk en lager kwam te liggen. Hierdoor was het ontvankelijker voor overstromingen. Als reactie hierop werd de polder bedijkt. In de late 12e eeuw werd een dam in de Schie aangelegd, om zo de Oude Dijk te kunnen aanleggen. Aan de voet van de dijk werd vervolgens een dijksloot gegraven. Vrij snel hierna zijn er ophogingen aangebracht en werd daarmee ook de dijksloot aan het oog onttrokken. Botanisch en pollenonderzoek toont aan dat de belangrijkste veranderingen in het landschap in deze periode plaats hebben gevonden. Het landschap droogde op en werd aanzienlijk opener ten gevolge van een toenemend aandeel in de akkerbouw. Op deze ophogingen zijn slechts weinig sporen van bewoning aangetroffen, in de vorm van plaggenwanden en kuilen.

Er werd veel vondstmateriaal aangetroffen in het dijklichaam, de dijksloot en de ophogingen. Het betreft onder andere geïmporteerd aardewerk uit het Duitse Rijnland, als ook lokaal geproduceerd kogelpotaardewerk en hoogversierd aardewerk. Tevens werd er veel tufsteen gevonden, maar ook kloostermoppen en geprofileerde bakstenen. Dat deze vroege bouwmaterialen hier samen werden gevonden, wijst op een datering in de overgangsperiode van tufsteen naar baksteen. Er werden tevens veel metalen voorwerpen verzameld. Het betrof onder andere een beitel, gespen, een lanspunt, knijpscharen, lemmeten van messen, een broche, een ring en een sleutel. Een tot nu toe onbekend type leren instapschoen behoorde ook tot de vondsten. Ten slotte was de vondst van een vrijwel complete houten stoel uit het begin van de 13e eeuw zelfs uniek te noemen.

De vroegste historische vermelding van bewoning binnen het plangebied dateert uit de vroege 15e eeuw. Het betreft een boerderij met de naam ’s Gravenhuize. Aangetroffen restanten die aan deze historische vermeldingen zijn te koppelen waren een laat 14e-eeuwse/vroeg 15e-eeuwse haardplaats en een wandspoor, die onderdeel waren van een vakwerkhuis.

Uit deze periode zijn een aantal metalen voorwerpen geborgen, zoals een mes met lemmet en heft, een knijpschaar, een gesp en een gordelsluiting met een restant leer, een halve groot (munt) en een hoefijzer. Tevens werd onder andere een tweetal leren kinderschoenen en een natuurstenen vijzel gevonden.

In de Nieuwe tijd waren er veel akkers aanwezig in de omgeving. Op deze akkers werden granen, waaronder rogge, verbouwd. Evenals in de Late Middeleeuwen bedreef men vermoedelijk ook veeteelt en werden de graslanden gebruikt voor beweiding met vee. Daarnaast was een deel van de graslanden mogelijk als hooiland in gebruik.

De oudste baksteenbouw op de locatie betreft de westelijke boerderij. Deze dateert uit de 16e eeuw en is op de plek van het voormalige vakwerkhuis gebouwd. Er zijn bij de boerderij aanwijzingen aangetroffen die wijzen op het ambacht van boter maken.

Attraverso la storia di un personaggio e di una manifattura ceramica riemerge uno spaccato sulla vita culturale di Pescara tra gli anni Venti ed il Dopoguerra.
La produzione utilizzò l’antica sapienza artigianale con oggetti dal tipico decoro castellano, piatti e bottiglie, tazze, fiasche del pellegrino, mattonelle con paesaggi, statuine con figure zoomorfe ed elementi fitomorfi.
  Nel 1927 si legge in una inserzione su una rivista dell'epoca “Corriere dei ceramisti rivista tecnica delle industrie ceramiche”:
«pittori e decoratori di maioliche abilissimi cercasi per la decorazione antica e moderna, inviare offerte dettagliate, età, posti occupati e pretese a Maiolica d'Abruzzo – Emilio Polci Pescara».
Sempre nel 1927 nella Scuola “Casermette” di Pescara Porta Nuova «si è voluto sperimentare la pittura su ceramica (…) mattonelle e piatti vengono gratuitamente offerti dalla locale fabbrica E. Polci».
Famosa è la produzione per il dolce nato a Pescara: il Parrozzo.

This article discusses the results of a research on ceramics for architectural produced by master potters originating in Anversa degli Abruzzi (L'Aquila, Central Italy) in the Sixteenth century. Today are known examples of these ceramics tiles at Villa d'Este in Tivoli and the Palace Croce in Tivoli, at the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Collarmele (AQ) and that of St. Francesco in Franciscan Convent in Castelvecchio Subequo (AQ), and the Palazzo Ducale in Palma Campania (NA), works from the workshops of master Bernardino Gentile and Master Pietro de Aversa that archival research have allowed us to identify with the ceramist PietroTroilo, a native of Anversa degli Abruzzi.

This is an archaeological and historical study of Mexico City and Xaltocan, focusing on the early years after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire in 1521. The study of households excavated in Mexico City and the probate inventories of 39 colonizers provide a vivid view of the material and social lives of the Spanish in what was once the capital of the Aztec empire. Decades of archaeological and ethnohistorical research in Xaltocan, a town north of Mexico City, offers a long-term perspective of daily life, technology, the economy, and the adoption of Spanish material culture among indigenous people. Through these case studies, this book examines interpretive strategies used when working with historical documents and archaeological data. Focusing on the use of metaphors to guide interpretation, this volume explores the possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration between historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists working on this pivotal period in Latin American history.

This article discusses the validity of the so-called Agrafe Forger, an artist of the late 18th to early 19th century who restaured medieval ivories and also is responsible of forgeries in the light of archeological finds from Stralsund in the German Hanse region. There ceramics had been discovered in a late medieval pottery which made wide use of prototypes for late 14th to early 15th century ivory designs for the decoration of there vessels. Some of them had a white glaze of previously unknown composition which resembles the earliest majolica in color and German stoneware in form. The Agraffe-Forger was identified by the use of brooches, which Leeuwenberg who compiled the oeuvre thought to be a certain feature of forgeries. This is evidently wrong, since brooches were still in use in the 15th century, but the forgery around which the work of the forger was assembled unmasks itself because the brooch in question dates from the wrong epoch...

Nel contributo si analizzano maioliche rinascimentali (XVI secolo) provenienti dallo scavo di via della Sapienza a Pisa. Si discute inoltre la presenza di imitazioni delle maioliche di Montelupo Fiorentino a Pisa e in altri contesti della Toscana.

Blue on blue (Berettino) sherds appeared in numerous production and consumption archaeological excavations in Lisbon and other archaeological sites in Portugal (mid 16th-beg. 17th c.). The abundance of this interesting faience lead us to compare it with similar pottery from other well-known production centres in Italy, namely Liguria (Savona and Albisola), Spain (Triana kilns) and Low Countries.
Differences in the diffraction patterns of the sherds’ pastes from the four countries were observed. In most samples cobalt blue silicate (cobalt olivine) was identified in the dark blue or light blue glazes by the use of micro-Raman spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance spectra. Bivariate plots of Al/Si vs. Ca/Si also evidence clear differences for Lisbon and Seville pottery.

Se presenta la colección de mayólicas inventariadas en el Castillo de San Severino Museo de la Ruta del Esclavo, que proceden de las excavaciones arqueológicas realizadas en el mismo inmueble, ubicado en las afueras de la ciudad de Matanzas (Cuba). Se contextualiza la muestra espacial, histórica y cronológicamente, aportando un panorama general de la colección y su relevancia para el estudio de la vida cotidiana en la fortaleza militar desde finales del siglo XVIII hasta la segunda mitad del XIX.

Majolica collection inventoried in San Severino Castle Museum of the Slave Route, coming from the archaeological excavations in the same building, located on the outskirts of the city of Matanzas (Cuba) is presented. Spatial, historical and chronological sample is contextualized, providing an overview of the collection and its relevance to the study of everyday life in the military fortress since the late eighteenth century until the second half of the nineteenth.

Harlingen heeft een rijke traditie in het maken van een bijzondere soort handbeschilderde en met een witte laag tinglazuur bedekte keramiek die we majolica of gleiersgoed noemen.

De eerste Harlingse gleibakkerij stond aan de Raamstraat op de hoek met de Schritsen en heeft gewerkt van 1610 tot 1803. Tijdens bouwwerkzaamheden kwamen grote hoeveelheden veelkleurig bedrijfsafval aan het licht uit de vroegste fase van het bedrijf, in het eerste kwart van de 17e eeuw. Deze unieke vondsten zijn met een noodopgraving in 1987 geborgen door medewerkers van Het Hannemahuis samen met enthousiaste vrijwilligers om te voorkomen dat deze voorgoed zouden verdwijnen.

In een weiland aan de zuidkant van Harlingen werd het gleibakkersafval gevonden uit het midden van de 17e eeuw van een tweede gleibakkerij, die we “Buiten de Kerkpoort” noemen. Deze werkplaats vervaardigde vooral blauw witte majolica en de beroemde Friese wandtegels.

De duizenden verzamelde scherven maken deel uit van de collectie van Het Hannemahuis. De oveninventaris, misbaksels, halffabrikaten, aan diggelen gevallen tafelwaar en bouwkeramiek van beide gleibakkerijen was tot op heden niet uitputtend onderzocht.

De Stichting Fries Aardewerk nam daarom het initiatief dit materiaal nader te laten onderzoeken om de productlijn in kaart te brengen en deze schat aan informatie toegankelijk te maken voor een breder publiek.

Deze Terra Cotta Incognita Special nr. 1 geeft ingevoerde archeologen en kunsthistorici een ingang bij de herkomstbepaling van hun vondsten en de voorwerpen in hun collecties. Maar ook diegenen met een interesse in de geschiedenis van ambachtelijke productietechnieken en vroegmoderne vormgeving kunnen hierin hun hart ophalen.

This paper discusses the presence and meaning of late medieval tin-glazed ceramics of Italian and Spanish origin in inland Flanders (Belgium). In general, tin-glazed wares are very rare in late medieval archaeological contexts from this region. Both the distribution pattern of the archaeological evidence and the presence of this type of ceramics on 15th and early 16th century Flemish paintings, miniatures and tapestry lead to a discussion about their meaning and symbolic use, especially connected to the cult of the Holy Virgin.

Archaeological excavations at 3 Maja Street in Rzeszów have unearthed,
among other types of finds, several thousands of pottery fragments. This collection includes shards from both glazed and painted pottery, the latter being glazed just as well. To date our ground-breaking studies of the technological side of Modern Age Sub Carpathian ceramics – which are renowned for their high quality – had examined only a miniscule portion of this corpus. Pottery making in the Sub Carpathian region has a long history, from the Middle Ages to almost the present day. Decorating surfaces of ceramic objects has an extremely long tradition. Pottery was enamelled in order to achieve a desired aesthetic effect as well as out of practical considerations – making the vessels waterproof, easier to clean, to protect painted-on decorations, etc. The pottery fragments which we wish to present here represent both painted and
glazed as well as glazed-only vessels. From the wealth of pottery fragments excavated by archaeologists at 3 Maja Street in Rzeszów we selected several shards for further study, which we then examined under a polarised light microscope with transmitted light and with a scanning microscope. Each of those two methods provides slightly different information. The colour palette of shards from 3 Maja Street in Rzeszów, of which we have studied but a small segment, is extensive. In the painting patterns of the examined specimens we note the presence of cream, sky blue, dark blue, brown and white coloured glazing. The chromophores used to make dark blue pigment are cobalt, copper, manganese and iron. A rust-red colour is achieved through use of an almost opaque pigment comprised mostly of iron oxide, albeit with
single grains of a cobalt blue pigment. Both pigments are frits. In one examined case we discovered a minute layer of quartz grains under the paint. The painting layers were coated with lead-silicate enamel with a delicate greenish hue, due to use of iron and copper oxides as colourants. Glazed pottery from Rzeszów is coated with enamels from a broader colour palette, with e.g. olive green, apple green, navy blue, blue and yellow hues. The ceramic mass used for mezza maiolica was meticulously prepared, with any defects of such vessels appearing only at later stages of the production process – at decoration and firing. However, please note that the study materials here are manufacturing rejects. At local workshops the potters and glazers used high quality materials although, one must say, they did not always put much effort
into finishing their wares. In almost all cases effects of hundreds of years of corrosive (weathering) processes occurring inside the sedimentation layer may be discerned. Only occasionally visible to macroscopic examination, yet always apparent under a microscope.
Materials for the production of the pottery were procured locally (e.g.
Tertiary Era Krakowiec Clays). The materials for glazing were either imported from outside the region in semi finished product form – glass lumps, or the enamel was made on site by combining local (e.g. silica sand from Tarnobrzeg area) and imported components (e.g. lead and lead oxide from the mines in Olkusz or Siewierz acquired via Cracow). Rare colourants were doubtlessly imported. We may only guess that purchases of raw materials were made at nearby cities like Cracow or Przemyśl. We have not identified the source of non-transparent iron-oxide based frit which was discovered on one of the examined shards. We are aware, however, that manufacture and trade in such colourants (frits and powdered minerals) was a lucrative business on an European scale.
Setting up of a pottery-glazer workshop includes a long list of various
considerations: access to fuel and water, space to erect the kilns, adequate room to work those kilns, space to prepare glass batches, areas for storing and grinding pigment, areas for quality control and for readying the wares for transport. Such a workshop was not a fly-speck, as noted by Józef Torzewski in his treatise published at the close of the 18th century. A tile making establishment employed a certain number of people and who in various ways had an impact on the life of the local urban community, e.g. through their capacity as tradesmen guilds. Examination of the finds presented here – a tiny fragment of a much larger and colourful corpus – raises questions as to the location of workshops where they had been made, of how were those workshops organised, what had been the scale of their output. Such questions may
only by answered after analysis of more shards.

Podkarpacie (Subcarpathia) is a physico-geographical region located in five countries. In south-eastern Poland it is covered
by the administrative boundaries of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. The area within Poland abounds in numerous glass factories enjoying
a favorable reputation. Between the 16th and 18th centuries several glassworks and workshops producing glazed pottery, tiles and semimajolica were active. Toponymic analysis reveals the names of numerous localities reminiscent of the glass industry. The purpose of this
work is to identify potential glass raw materials that were available in the present Podkarpackie Voivodeship and those that had to be
imported. This is the first such study. Reference was primarily made to the borders of the current Podkarpackie Voivodeship, reaching
beyond them only in the cases of rare or non-occurring raw materials. The basic glass and glaze raw materials are quartz sand, along
with alkali and other fluxes, alkaline earths, chromophores, opacifiers, clarifying substances and other specific raw materials. Raw
materials for the construction of all technological components of a glasswork, raw material for packaging and dispatch of glasses, fuel
and water, tools, and above all experienced glass workers and glaziers are also necessary. The area of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship
abounds in basic glass raw materials. The exceptions are metals and their compounds, which were certainly imported.
