Manuscripts of the Islamic Maghreb

A preliminary catalog of Ibadi and other Arabic Manuscripts at the Association pour la Sauvegarde de l'Île de Djerba (Houmet Souk, Tunisia). The catalog includes codicological descriptions of each manuscript, a list of watermarks with images, and appendices with former owners and copyists.

During the fourth century AH, in general and in Greater Morocco in particular, the Islamic Maghreb witnessed a prosperous period, which was considered one of the most fertile periods of its life, since the Almoravids left from the Sahara and took control of Morocco and Andalusia after the elimination of the Zenat Princedoms in Morocco and the states of dominations  in the  Andalusia . This two periods witnessed a well-developed situation in the domain of sociological and economical once as a results of the  security and stability they offered , after repelling internal and external dangers.
      In this context, the Almoravid State emerged in the social field with a state of class differentiation, with several new layers, whether masked people and spread in many cities of Morocco, which represent the ruling class with a comfortable social status (power / wealth) . Beside the social ethnicities like barbers, which represent the vast majority of the population who established the Elmoravid Country  . The Arabs have participated in the establishment of the region since the beginning of the Islamic conquests this country. The people of the non-believer also lived alongside with other classes of society under the protection of the Authority. Then the Jewish community has become richer.  Despite the claims of some Western historians that they were persecuted in the era of ElMoravid.
      This mosaic of different social classes produced a variety of customs and traditions from one region to another which had a great impact on the society and left its mark as clear as the celebrations in Morocco, as well as the customs associated with the daily life of the population, in addition  to the social facilities that were spread during that period , all of that represented  an image of a society composed of human beings that differ linguistically, ethnically and religiously

This article offers a summary of a recent project aimed at the conservation and preliminary inventory of the Bin Yaʿqūb (Ben Yaqoub) family library in the village of Guīzin (Guezin) on the island of Jerba, Tunisia. The inventory, carried out from Septem-ber to December 2015 with generous funding from a Collection Care and Emergency Response Grant from The Islamic Manuscript Association (tima), sought to insure the long-term protection of this collection as well as to compile a preliminary inventory of its contents. This article provides an overview of the survey, including its stated goals and the extent to which it realized those objectives. The second half of the article provides a preliminary inventory of the library's contents.

Cet article rapporte les premiers résultats d’un projet de recherche qui vise à identifier les matériaux – papier et colorants – des serpentes rencontrées dans certaines copies du Dalā’il al-ḫayrāt, un livre de prières écrit au cours du xve s. par al-Ǧazūlī, un mystique soufi marocain. Les serpentes sont des papiers destinés à protéger les enluminures, illustrations et feuillets du texte contre la détérioration et le déchargement des pigments et des encres. Du xvie jusqu’à la fin du xixe s., quelques exemplaires marocains sont pourvus de serpentes de papier teinté dans une gamme colorée allant du jaune pâle au fuchsia vif. L’étude comprend quatorze copies provenant de collections du Qatar et de France pour lesquels les caractéristiques physiques de plusieurs serpentes sont étudiées et les colorants identifiés par HPLC. Les analyses qui ont été menées à l’IRPA à Bruxelles, révèlent que le carthame fut utilisé comme colorant jusqu’à l’ère industrielle, lorsque les colorants synthétiques importés d’Europe ont supplanté les colorants naturels. Finalement, la signification des serpentes est explorée, en comparaison avec les rideaux de soie trouvés dans les manuscrits médiévaux occidentaux.

Article about a marginal note written in the margin of a manuscript of the work al-Itqān wa-l-iḥkām fi šarḥ tuḥfa al-ḥukām, by Mayyara al-Fasi and which presents two peculiarities: the author identifies himself as “one of al-Andalus” and writes the word al-Andalus with an extension letter.

The volume contains a new edition of the Arabic text of the ms Vat.ar. 368 (Hadith Bayad wa Riyad) an Italian translation and a large Introduction to the manuscript that includes the history of the codex; a review of the work already dedicated to it and that pushed me to make a new edition and translation of the text, a codicological analysis - enriched by a contribution of the head of the Restoration Laboratory of the Vatican Library; a palaeographical description of the script and many other aspects.

تحظى عملية رقمنة(Digitalisation) أرشيف الوثائق والمخطوطات باهتمام واسع من لدن الجامعات والمعاهد العليا بالدول الغربية، فهي لم تسعى لأجل الأرشفة فقط ،بل من أجل توثيق ونشر التراث المخطوط على نطاق واسع عبر الشبكة العنكبوتية، لتعميم الفائدة لدى جميع المهتمين والباحثين في حقل الدراسات التاريخية والعلوم الاجتماعية والإنسانية، ومازالت هذه العملية في مراحلها الأولى بالمغرب، ونجد بعض التجارب الناجحة بكلية الآداب بالرباط والمعاهد المختصة بالأرشيف الوطني،ومكتبة آل سعود بالدارالبيضاء،إلا أنها لم تشمل المكتبات والأرشيفات الخاصة التي طالها النسيان والإهمال،وآلت إلى الضياع والتشتت،  ولم تحظى بالعناية الفائقة في السياسة التوثيقية للأرشيف بالمغرب،على عكس الدول الغربية التي انفتحت على مقاولات مختصة في الأرشفة الالكترونية.

This article reconsiders the text and the authorship of an anonymous Arabic manuscript containing ink recipes. The text was first published by Eugenio Griffini in 1910, but the ink recipes have only recently attracted scholarly attention. Though the latest contributions on the manuscript consider it lost, it is in fact preserved at the Ambrosiana Library. Attributed to “the Sicilian”, an anonymous author, it is possible that it is the work of a 15th-century physician from Tunis. Griffini  edited the text, but images of the manuscript are published here for the first time, as well as an English translation and a new edition. For comparison, other ink recipes, from a sixteenth-century manuscript in maghribī script are edited and translated as well.

This paper aims to bring into focus the rich but often overlooked production of fine Qurʾānic manuscripts in the Maghrib al-Aqṣā (modern Morocco) and al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) between the 5th/11th and the 6th/12th centuries. From a palaeographic perspective, this period witnessed the crucial transition from local ‘Kūfic’ scripts to Maghribī round scripts, already employed during the previous century in non-Qurʾānic and Mozarab manuscripts. Despite this dramatic change, paralleled in the Muslim East by the so-called ‘revolution of Ibn al-Bawwāb’, numerous features of western Kūfic Qurʾāns were preserved, and constituted for the following centuries the trademarks of the Maghribī school: chapter headings in knotted Kūfic, different colours and shapes in notation and orthoepic signs, enduring predilection for parchment, etc. Several variants of Maghribi Qurʾānic scripts were also devised – from monumental to miniature – and began to influence the style of non-Qurʾānic religious texts, such as ḥadīth collections and the fundamental works of Mālikism. The possibility of linking these calligraphic traditions to precise sub-regions of the medieval Maghrib (such as Western or Eastern Andalus, Northern or Southern Morocco) will be discussed, trying to dispel some widespread misconceptions. Another issue under examination will be the influence played by eastern ʿAbbāsid bookhands, Ifrīqī scripts from Qayrawān, and Latin Visigothic scripts on certain letter forms of Maghribī scripts from the 4th/10th century; in this early period, the bookhands employed by the most skilled copyists of al-Andalus already contained several calligraphic features which later became typical of Maghribī Qurʾānic scripts.
