Materialities of Communication

A recente evolução das tecnologias da informação e do digital evidencia uma dificuldade em se reconhecer aos objectos técnicos uma consistência física ou uma presença estável. O imaginário do virtual concebe uma realidade em que tudo existe de forma imprecisa em circuitos e subsiste através de uma omnipresença nómada e desvinculada de um suporte particular. Anunciada a crise dos meios e a crise dos objectos, o problema torna-se concreto quando se assume que o espaço físico colapsa com a emergência das redes cibernéticas e a rigidez dos objectos dá lugar à evanescência da electricidade, da fibra óptica, das frequências e dos bits. Desde algumas correntes artísticas da desmaterialização até certas teorias do virtual, um certo tipo de discurso contemporâneo emancipa o imaterial como categoria que representa uma nova fase tecnológica.
Esta tendência para o imaterial parece, no entanto, ser redutora, do ponto de vista cultural, e inexacta, do ponto de vista técnico. É redutora porque nega qualquer materialidade que não seja aquela que se faz depender de metáforas como as de solidez, palpabilidade, opacidade ou densidade, acepções herdeiras da velha ὑλη grega. É inexacta porque, apesar de evanescentes, imprecisas ou instáveis, as matérias numérico-digitais não deixam de ser estados de matéria. Tais estados de matéria obrigam, aliás, a novas explorações da materialidade e a um aparelhamento mais sofisticado. A ubiquidade da matéria informacional e sua incessante circulação na rede demonstrará que, na verdade, em vez de estarmos perante um regime do imaterial, nos encontramos perante um regime de multiplicação em que tudo é transformado em informação, através de estados intermediários de matéria e de dispositivos. Afinal, a época que se inaugura não é a do imaterial mas a do hipermaterial (Bernard Stiegler). Entre as várias implicações desta assunção, começa por se reconhecer uma necessidade de superação do esquema aristotélico do hilemorfismo, que diz que todos os corpos são constituídos por forma e matéria, para se perceber que está em curso um estado de coisas sem coisas em que não é mais possível distinguir a matéria da forma - tudo será então superfície. Neste ponto, suspensa a materialidade rígida enquanto constrangimento à convergência universal dos meios numa ligação total, ganha relevância aquilo que Friedrich Kittler chamou de «efeito de superfície» (Oberflächeneffekt) e que aponta para uma generalização da interface como configuração cultural e tecnológica que congrega o cruzamento dos meios, a ecranização da experiência e um regime formal de numeralização digital que, já não tendo o seu referente no mundo natural mas no universo dos dados puros quantitativos, possibilita uma nova morfogenética do mundo em constante tomada de forma.

This paper presents the analysis of the trajectory of the band Apanhador Só in light of media archaeology intertwined with the Cyberculture context, in which are inserted issues such as the reconfiguration of the music industry and the modification of sociability, focusing on Materialities of Communication and aesthetic experience. In this context and in the scope of the independent music landscape of Porto Alegre, Apanhador Só is a rock band that represents a symbolic case of successfull trajectory, from 2003 to the present, in 2016, for it has been able to proceed with its work together with the construction of its public. Thus, the issue of the research is posed: considering an independent band as a cultural manifestation, how are the elements of the trajectory of the band Apanhador Só, articulated under the scope of media archaeology, related to the context of Cyberculture? The aim of this research is to understand the articulation between the artistic, relational and divulgation elements of the trajectory of Apanhador Só in the contemporary context. The theoretical reference encompasses media archaeology, Cyberculture and Materialities of Communication, with impact on aesthetic experience. The methodological process is based on media archaeology, together with bibliography and document research techniques, engaged observation, in-depth interview and content analysis. As a result, it was found that the actions of Apanhador Só throughout its trajectory, corresponding to an identity construction based on its artistic truth, articulates some sort of aesthetic experience through various linked elements which allowed for the dissemination of their work and for higher visibility in the Cyberculture context, where the musical product, due to its easy consumption, has undergone a devaluation process. Therefore, the band managed to create its own audience and their adherence to the different action proposed.

Recent developments on informational and digital technologies evince an hindrance in recognizing a physical consistence or a stable presence in technical objects. Virtual imaginary conceives a reality where everything exists in circuits inaccurately and subsists through a nomadic ubiquity and detached from a particular support. Announced the media crisis and the crisis of the object, the problem becomes a concrete one when it is assumed that physical space collapses with the emergence of cybernetic networks, and object hardness gives rise to the evanescence of electricity, optical fiber, frequencies and bits. Among artistic tendencies of dematerialization and theories on virtual, a certain type of contemporary discourse emancipates the immaterial as a category that represents a new technological phase. 
This tendency to the immaterial seems however to be narrow, from the cultural angle, and inaccurate from the technical angle. It is narrow because it denies any materiality unrelated to metaphors of solidity, palpability, opacity, or density, meanings that succeed from the greek ὑλη. It is inaccurate because, although evanescent, indeterminate, or unstable, numerical-digital matter is still a material state. These material states compel, moreover, to new exploitations of materiality and to more sophisticated devices. The ubiquity of informational material and his unceasing circulation on network will demonstrate that instead of being before a regime of immaterial, we are before a regime of multiplication where everything turns into information, through intermediate states of matter and devices. After all, the opened epoch is not one of the immaterial but of the hypermmaterial (Bernard Stiegler). Among the several involvements of this assumption, one begins to recognize a need to overcoming the Aristotelian scheme of hylemorphism, which stands that all the bodies are constituted by shape and matter, to realize that there is an ongoing state of things without things, when is no longer possible to distinguish matter and form – everything will be surface. At this point, suspended the rigid materiality as a constraint to the universal converging of media in a total connection, what Friedrich Kittler called «surface effect» becomes relevant (Oberflächeneffekt), pointing to a generalization of the interface as cultural and technological configuration which gathers the media crossing, the screen logic as experience and a formal regime of digital numeralization whose referent is not in the natural world but in the universe of pure quantitative data, enabling a new morphogenetic of the world in constant taking shape.

O esgotamento da noção de utopia — cujo espírito baseado na crença optimista num futuro melhor marcou a Modernidade ocidental — abriu espaço para uma outra que, progressivamente, ganhou centralidade na cultura contemporânea: a noção de nostalgia (Fredric Jameson). Por um lado, esta noção carrega em si a ideia de que a Modernidade é um projecto inacabado (Jürgen Habermas), cujas promessas não se chegaram a realizar, mas em relação às quais há um constante retorno. Por outro lado, e consequentemente, a nostalgia liga-se à percepção cultural de uma certa exaustão da temporalidade histórica ou da ideia de progresso. Em suma, se já não estamos certos de que o futuro se vai concretizar, estamos presos no presente e, portanto, resta-nos rememorar, não apenas o passado, mas o próprio presente, numa espécie de ciclo vicioso que pode ser lido como um lento cancelamento do futuro (Bifo Berardi). A partir desta leitura cultural, perspectivas críticas sugerem que os media e as indústrias culturais actuais favorecem este impasse — configurado como nostálgico — porque insistem em fórmulas familiares que mais não fazem do que recuperar modelos repetidos sem oferecerem alternativa para a produção da heterogeneidade (Mark Fisher). O arquivo surge, então, numa dimensão paradoxal. Por um lado, poder-se-á assumir que todos os media são meios de registo que trabalham, sobretudo com a digitalização geral, a constituição de um arquivo universal que tudo guarda. Por outro lado, de que arquivo poderemos falar na época de um eterno presente, sem alternativas, que apenas reescreve ou sobre-escreve as referências simbólicas da actualidade? Perante esta aporia, importa-nos aqui pensar o modo como certas abordagens artísticas (o uso do crackle na música de Caretaker ou de Burial; a arqueologia da materialidade do cinema na obra de Tacita Dean, a reprodutibilidade do arquivo no trabalho de Mark Leckey) têm procurado expor o modo como os media materializam a memória, abordagens, que a partir de uma abertura disruptiva da noção de nostalgia, questionam a temporalidade do presente e da própria História (Walter Benjamin).

Pensées en termes de « politique des choses », les chroniques de Maria Judite de Carvalho nous restituent quelque chose d’important. Contrairement à ce que deviendrait la vision hégémonique de certains discours après la Révolution des Œillets, la société portugaise antérieure à cette nouvelle entrée dans l’Histoire, n’est pas une société totalement immobile. Elle se meut, et beaucoup, au niveau du ‘‘monde de la vie’’, surtout au niveau des matérialités de la communication. Cela a son importance. En effet, ceci montre comment certaines des déterminations ‘‘du capitalisme tardif’’ – dans le cadre des discours symboliques ‘‘post-modernes’’ – redéfinissent l’auto-image de la société portugaise, société qui traversera pratiquement intacte l’avènement de la Démocratie en 1974 ; une auto-image et matérialités qui, vu sous un autre angle, ont eu des répercussions sur l’événement démocratique en tant que tel. La nouvelle République va opérer justement sur l’inflation des lieux de représentation agoratiques – les ‘‘Palais de la Raison’’ auxquels fait allusion Latour – en négligeant le fait que les technologies de la représentation passent par beaucoup d’autres assemblées, par d’autres foyers de production de communautés.
