Since the battle of Stalingrad, the conceptions regarding urban warfare have been continuously changing. Urban areas are topographic complexes characterized by anthropomorphic constructions, a large density of civilian population and by various means of logistic support. Both offensive and defensive tactics during urban warfare are to be carried out with respect to the specific environment and support. Thus, tactics and safety regulations are to be specifically developed. This paper introduces means of adopting the necessary safety regulations when facing small calibre weapons engagement in urban combat and proposes fire solutions regarding offensive and defensive situations.

Absrtact: This paper approaches Sébastiena Le Preste de Vauban as an individual who was a part of a group of professionals in King Louis XIV's France and analyzes elements enabling his actions. It also defines his influence on a group to which he belonged, in France, but in Europe of his time, as well. This paper especially highlights the trend he set when building forts and defining alternative routes and attempts at answers by rivals. In the end, the influence that the Vauban approach had on fortifications in Slavonia, Slavonski Brod, and Gradiška is presented. Öz: Bu makale, Sébastien Le Preste de Vauban'a, Kral XIV. Louis Fransasındaki bir profesyonel grubun parçası olan bir kişi olarak yaklaşmakta ve eylemlerini mümkün kılan unsurları analiz etmektedir. Ayrıca, zamanının Fransası ve aynı zamanda Avrupasında bağlı olduğu bir grup üzerindeki etkisini de tanımlamaktadır. Makale özellikle onun kaleler yaparken ve alternatif yollar saptarken belirlediği eğilimin ne olduğunu izah etmekte ve rakipleri tarafından verilen karşılıklar üzerinde yoğunlaşmaktadır. Sonunda Vauban yaklaşımının Slavonya, Slavonski Brod ve Gradişka'daki tahkimatlardaki etkisi sunulmaktadır.

The second half of the 18th century saw the formation of the first establishments to provide formal training to officers prior to receiving their first commission. The first school, the Royal Military Academy, was formed in 1741 by the Board of Ordnance to train Artillery and Engineer Officers. It was 1800 before the army formed a similar establishment and the building blocks were in place for the creation of the Scientific Soldier.
This thesis will look at the formation of the Royal Military Academy and look at the training that officers received with a focus on those officers destined to serve during the Peninsular War. The complementary roles and training of the Royal Military Artificers and the eventual formation of the School of Military Engineering will be described.
A thorough review will then be undertaken of the officers in the Royal Engineers, the numbers, their background, the locations they served in and the tasks they carried out.
A new review of the sieges during the war will be completed using unpublished material. The other roles undertaken by the Royal Engineers in the Peninsular War will be fully investigated and described. These roles are more comprehensive than has been commonly understood and will demonstrate the contribution of the educated officer to the war.
The thesis will conclude by looking at the impacts of the post-war peace on military education.

Th is paper aims to question the military capability concept, as a core element of the strategic military planning process, in order to determine its validity or need for expansion. Th us, based on a deductive approach and qualitative research, we argue that the strategic planning process is a conundrum so dependent on capabilities that it is necessary to analyse this concept per se and, if necessary, expand it on a time and threat basis. Otherwise, the more ambiguous the concept, the more subjective the planning process output and, consequently, the greater likelihood of the Armed Forces not being prepared to face the wide range of future challenges. It concludes by suggesting that the military capability concept should be expanded and more integrated and the strategic defence planning process adapted accordingly.

The purpose of this article is to describe the construction and capabilities of javelin used by Roman light-armed troops (velites) in the period from 3rd to 2nd centuries BC. Based on written and archeological sources, as well as with reference to modern experiments, the author attempts to reconstruct this weapon and verify in practice its range, accuracy and penetration ability.The conducted experiments allowed (among other things) to demonstrate the increase in coverage by using a leather thong (amentum) and its real impact on accuracy, as well as the impact of bad weather on, the effectiveness of javelin-armed light troops.

Few authors have researched the history and development of the Peterwardein Fortress’ military architecture
and fortification system, as well as the general role of permanent fortification and techniques of siege warfare.
Despite it is still one of the largest, most complex and best-preserved, the Peterwardein Fortress countermine
system hasn’t yet been a subject of significant interest and research. Utilising the existing military literature,
authored by former officers and military academy lecturers, the aim of this paper is to briefly introduce
the history and explain the basics of mine warfare in times when the Peterwardein Fortress and its countermine
system had been built. As the Fortress, it remained untouched by larger military operations since construction,
and the sieges held during its building weren’t long enough to provide insight into the techniques of siege, mine
warfare and subterranean fighting, certain level of understanding can only be attained by comparison with historical
examples. Peterwardein Fortress countermine system, the need for its construction, and its particular role,
can primarily help us to assess better the overall significance of its fortification system for the general history of
military architecture, as well as to value, cherish, protect and better treat it as such.

Liguria di ponente, provincia di Savona: sulla cresta del colle Bechignolo tra Finalborgo e Castel Gavone, a guardia delle valli dell’Aquila e del Pora, trova il suo posto, in questo territorio conteso e, dunque, fortemente connotato dalle fortificazioni, forte San Giovanni. L’edificio è costruito, a partire dal XV secolo, sulla strada che collega Finalborgo alla dimora signorile dei Del Carreto, feudatari del borgo, il Castel Gavone. Gli aggiornamenti difensivi, seguendo le più contemporanee tecniche di costruzione studiate dagli ingegneri militari, trasformano l’antico torrione in “chiave strategica” della difesa spagnola del XVII secolo. Il Finale, infatti, possedimento dello stato di Milano e, quindi, della corona spagnola a partire dal XVI secolo è un’enclave incastonata all’interno del territorio della repubblica di Genova. Questo porto assume un ruolo strategico fondamentale nel 1666 quando Gaspare Beretta progetta e costruisce la strada omonima che collega il Finale allo stato di Milano, diventando la porta principale di accesso al cuore dell’Europa continentale. Questo territorio, in bilico tra paesaggio montano e marittimo, ancora oggi accoglie le tracce della “catena di fortificazioni” che ha plasmato tutto il Finalese: a levante la fortezza di Castelfranco, verso l’entroterra forte San Giovanni e Castel Govone, oltre ad alcune torri di avvistamento definiscono il paesaggio fortificato. Alcuni di questi elementi, giacciono, oggi, in condizione di abbandono e meriterebbero azioni di valorizzazione strutturate. L’obiettivo dello studio, promosso dal Polo museale della Liguria, oggi gestore di forte San Giovanni, si è focalizzato sulla messa a sistema degli studi frammentati su questo tema e ha permesso di mettere in luce alcuni aspetti della storia delle fortificazioni del Finale. La comunicazione e divulgazione degli esiti della ricerca potrebbe diventare lo spunto per un nuovo progetto di valorizzazione, portato avanti non solo da associazioni di volontariato, ma anche da enti pubblici e singoli ricercatori, di questo paesaggio fortificato.

The article is about the work of Joseph Hatzinger, son of builder Paul (Pál) Hatzinger from Székesfehérvár (Hungary), and Joseph’s sons Heinrich and Paul. Joseph worked in Osijek and in Slavonia in the second half of the 18th century. In the early 19th century, his older son Heinrich spent almost a decade as a professor at the Genie-Akademie (Military Academy of Engineering) in Vienna and designed two important Early Neoclassical churches at Terezin and Josefov fortresses in Bohemia. His younger son Paul, after a brief period as a lecturer at the Genie-Akademie, worked as an engineer in various parts of the Habsburg Monarchy during the first half of the 19th century, from Galicia, across Dalmatia, to Vienna and Lower Austria in the final phase of his career. Finally, his great-great-grandson Gusztáv Kasper, the grandson of Paul Hatzinger Jr, became a Hungarian railway engineer at the turn of the 20th century.

The measurement of light and colour has always been a peripheral science. Light became a 'disciplined' quantity over the period of a century, but the specialist communities that measured it did not. The quantification of visible light (photometry), colour (colorimetry), and radiant intensity (radiometry) involved distinct communities of physicists, psychologists, technicians and engineers. This chapter of _Science in the Shadows_ examines how the measurement of non-visible light became the domain of post Second World War military engineers and classified development programmes.

Recension du livre issu de la thèse de Christophe Lafaye, officier de réserve, portant sur la participation du génie français aux opérations en Afghanistan. De nombreux entretiens ouvrent des fenêtres sur la réalité de la guerre dans ce pays.

The article analyses the impact of maps and plans for military operations in the Netherlands in the 1620s on the modernisation and reform of the art of war in the Republic of Poland. The analysis showed that the source of tactical, operational and strategic knowledge were cartographic sources that reached the lands of the Republic. They were most often brought by people who left the Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to the West for education and work and then returned to their homeland. It was established that a typical magnate returning from the journey brought between a dozen and a few dozen or so engravings and his own drawings of the sieges and fortification plans. A common form was to provide maps for correspondence. Cartographic sources were supposed to help evaluate the military actions taken and allow the recipients to “keep an eye on” European conflicts. Thanks to the journey of Prince Wladyslaw Vasa around Europe in the years 1624–1625, a pattern of taking “military science” was formed not only in universities but also in military camps in the Netherlands.
