Musical Autonomy

It has been discussed throughout history whether we can examine and explain music autonomously or
heteronomously. This article aims to discuss the autonomous-heteronomous approaches in Ottoman
music through thirteen different musical writings, from Yusuf Kırşehri’s Risale-i Musiki (1411) to Haşim Bey’s Mecmua (1853). Early Ottomans and the Muslim philosophers before them, were greatly
aware of the Pythagorean doctrines such as ethos and the Harmony of the Spheres, in which the music
is studied heteronomously. However, an opposite line to Pythagoreanism, Aristoxenianism had also
immense influence on the musical writings of Muslim philosophers and the early Ottomans. With the
rise of Turkish musical writings in the 15th century, there was a shift from the autonomous approach of
Aristoxenianism. The argument of this article is that this shift allowed the Pythagoreanism to dominate
the musical thought in the following centuries and even today. This was not a success of the heteronomous approach of Pythagoreanism but the result of the loss of connection with the Aristoxenian
tradition.

This chapter explores the use, purpose, and definition of the concept of aesthetic autonomy in analytical philosophy of music and New Musicology. I start by sketching the genesis, methodology, and development of analytical philosophy of art, the history of which has not been investigated systematically. Here, I show how early analytical philosophy of art warmed to aesthetics in general only very slowly, as it was commonly regarded as unscientific, speculative, and thus not subject to analysis up to the 1950s and 1960s. I then proceed to analyse the relations between aesthetic autonomy and music as well as three more specific notions of autonomy: the autonomy of the work from its historical setting, the autonomy of aesthetic experience, and the autonomy of musical expression. The first-named aspect is discussed by sketching the debate arising from Monroe Beardsley's and William Wimsatt's "The Intentional Fallacy," which continues to influence modern discourse on the role of authorial intention in aesthetics. This leads to the second question, the question of aesthetic autonomy, examined by reconstructing the exchange between Monroe Beardsley and John Dickie, who discussed this concept publicly over several decades. I then turn to the broad set of problems associated with autonomy, formalism, and expression in analytical philosophy of music since the early 1980s and
competing concepts of emotivism: arousal, expression, portrayal, the "contour theory" by Stephen Davies and Peter Kivy, as well as modern notions of a musical persona. Finally, I discuss musical autonomy in terms of the paradigm shift ushered in by New Musicology and its critique of formal analysis and positivism. In a final step, I try to show that traditional and New Musicology are compatible when considered as perspectivist approaches to music, applying to distinct sets of questions and thus presenting complementary rather than irreconcilable methodologies.

Hans Georg Nägeli (1773-1836) ist für die Musikwissenschaft ein Vorläufer Eduard Hanslicks, für die Musikpädagogik ein Schüler Pestalozzis, für die Sozialgeschichte der Musik ein „Sängervater“. Doch weder innerhalb des Koordinatensystems einer Geschichte der Musikästhetik noch im Rahmen der Suche nach historischen Modellen und Anregungen für aktuelle reformpädagogische Diskussionen lassen Nägelis Interventionen sich verstehen. Selbst um Teilbereiche seines Werks und Wirkens begreifen zu können, muss man den „ganzen Nägeli“ in den Blick nehmen.

Miriam Roner tut genau das und konzentriert sich dabei auf drei Kernarbeitsfelder: Nägelis Tätigkeit als Musikalienhändler und Verleger, als Gründer und Leiter eines Sing-Instituts in Zürich sowie als Autor einer Theorie der Musik, die in den Vorlesungen über Musik mit Berücksichtigung der Dilettanten (1826) ihre prominente Zusammenfassung erhalten hat. Das bunte Nebeneinander der Tätigkeit als Geschäftsmann, Komponist, Lehrer und Theoretiker wird zusammengehalten
durch eine verbindende, übergreifende Problemstellung: Nägeli praktiziert und versteht Musik als spannungsvolles Ineinander von Autonomie und sozialer Funktion.

La autonomía como norma en el arte musical chileno.

En el año 1929, el Conservatorio Nacional de Música junto a otras instituciones artísticas se integraron, de manera inédita, a la recién nacida Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Chile. Este hecho no sólo significó un cambio en torno a la concepción unitaria de las artes en el país, sino que, de manera particular, concretó toda una reforma que afectaba a las prácticas y discursos musicales durante los últimos años. Por consiguiente, se logra asentar un nuevo ideal de música y, con él se establecen las exigencias de profesionalización de un medio artístico mayormente aficionado. Así, tanto el compositor como el intérprete se alejarán de la desprolijidad y confusión propia de las estudiantinas, salones y gremios, para posicionarse en los márgenes de una disciplina autónoma que distingue sus propios objetos, valorizaciones y sentidos.
Bajo este contexto, la presente ponencia busca problematizar el modo en que el surgimiento de un nuevo discurso musical en Chile, posiciona a la autonomía como una condición necesaria para que la música adquiera su valor de arte. En relación esto, propondremos cómo este proceso, lejos de encontrarse ajeno a los mecanismos del poder, formará parte de un dispositivo disciplinario (Foucault) que, en conjunto con la aparición del discurso folklórico, buscará interceder en las prácticas musicales vigentes como un medio de atender a las urgencias de la proletarización.  Para ello, analizaremos cómo la autonomía se constituye en una norma que permite distinguir a la música de arte de aquella que no lo es, y cómo este proceso establece una jerarquización de la creación musical. El compositor, como el sujeto de la disciplina artística, será el auténtico creador; mientras que músico popular, intuitivo e ingenuo, deberá contentarse con repetir la tradición del folklore.

In this paper I seek to identify the musical “repertoire” inherent to Kant's theoretical construction, avoiding any meta-explanation and avoiding inferring this repertoire of any biographical character of Kant. The argument is divided between sections I and II. The first section analyzes aspects of Kant's aesthetics that refer to the Baroque period [Affektenlehre]. The second section analyzes aspects of Kantian aesthetics that refer to the attitude and conception of classical music and the musical autonomy.
