Vlijmscherp verleden vertelt het verhaal over de geschiedenis van het zwaard en de rituele en symbolische betekenis ervan. U ziet bijna tweehonderd bijzondere zwaarden, afkomstig uit de prehistorie tot de twintigste eeuw. De pronkzwaarden, slagzwaarden en steekzwaarden komen uit bijna alle werelddelen. Blikvangers zijn de 'magische' bronzen zwaarden uit de prehistorie, Vikingzwaarden uit de omgeving van Dorestad, een Frans koningszwaard uit de Merovingische tijd en het Nederlandse Rijkszwaard, dat met de overige regalia een tastbaar symbool is van het koninklijk gezag.

Meer dan slechts een wapen

Het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden bezit de grootste collectie archeologische zwaarden van Nederland. Bruiklenen uit binnen- en buitenland verrijken de tentoonstelling en vullen het verhaal aan tot de twintigste eeuw. De zwaarden uit de verschillende perioden en landen geven u een beeld van de grote verscheidenheid in vorm, materiaal en versiering. U ontdekt hoe ze de afgelopen drieduizend jaar zijn gemaakt en u maakt kennis met hun (vaak) rituele en symbolische betekenis. Niet voor niets zijn zwaarden van oudsher een teken van macht, gerechtigheid en krijgskunst.

Zwaarden met persoonlijkheid

Een zwaard is niet alleen een wapen, het is veel meer dan dat. Al eeuwenlang staan zwaarden symbool voor macht, gerechtigheid en krijgskunst. Ze hebben vaak een aparte status en worden gezien als objecten met een eigen 'persoonlijkheid'. Zwaarden spreken nog steeds tot de verbeelding, net als degenen die ze droegen: strijders, ridders en soldaten.

Etude archéologique des techniques d’acquisition et de transformation du métal dans le cadre de la production des lames de sabre au Japon (IXe -XVIe siècle). / "Cette thèse a pour thème les techniques d’acquisition et de transformation du fer dans le cadre de la production des lames japonaises, sur une période courant du IXe à la toute fin du XVIe siècle. Une partie préliminaire est présente afin de donner une idée de l’évolution de la métallurgie du fer jusqu’à cette date. Le type de minerais, les sables ferrifères, est alors abordé avec ses techniques d’acquisition et d’extraction. S’en suit une étude des méthodes de transformation par le biais des techniques de réduction. L’étude des différents sites permet de mettre en lumière deux types majeurs de fourneau dans l’archipel : un type à cheminée semi-enterré et un type en forme de boîte rectangulaire. Ce dernier débouche d’ailleurs sur la mise au point, au début du XVIIe siècle, du fourneau traditionnel, le tatara. En outre, l’archipel présente un développement des techniques de forge antérieur aux techniques de réduction. A partir du IXe siècle, la forge japonaise se retrouve donc déjà à un niveau technique particulièrement élevé, ayant développé, en plus des techniques de mise en forme, des techniques d’affinage, de carburation et de grappage, autorisant un recyclage du fer, permettant d’affranchir en partie les forgerons de la production des sites de réduction. C’est donc sur cette base technique particulièrement développée qu’a pu se mettre en place une partie de la production des lames. Ce recyclage explique en partie la disparition d’un très grand nombre de lames, auquel il faut adjoindre à partir de la fin du XVIe siècle, des chasses au sabre, permettant de distinguer la classe des guerriers, les samouraïs par un port d’arme qui leur était réservé.

This thesis is dealing with the iron smelting and forge techniques in the
production of Japanese swords, from the 9th to the end of the 16th century.
A preliminary part presents the evolution of iron smelting techniques in Japan,
from the origin to the 9th century.
The types of ore (iron sand) and their acquisition and extraction techniques
are discussed for a period during from the 9th to the 16th century in a
second part.
The smelting techniques used at the same period are then studied. The
archaeological research sheds light on two major types of furnace in the
archipelago: a semi-buried shaft furnace and a rectangular box shape
furnace. This last one leads in the early 17th century to the development
of the traditional Japanese furnace, the tatara.
Concerning the forging techniques, their development in the archipelago was
prior to the smelting techniques. Therefore, from the 9th century, the
technology of the Japanese forge had already reached a high level,
having developed in addition to the basic forge techniques, the
refining, carburizing and clustering (oroshigane) techniques, allowing
the smith to not be entirely dependent on the iron production of the
smelting furnace, but to also be able to rely on the recycled iron.
Consequently, a large part of the blade production in this period might
have relied on that techniques. This recycling helps to explain the
disappearance of a large number of blades, associated to sword hunts in
the late 16th century which led to distinguish a warrior class, the
samurai, carrying a weapon which is, from the early 17th century,
reserved to them."

Dual. Verano de 2014. Tsuba: Guía práctica para el estudio de la guarda del sable japonés Kinko Otsuki tsuba. Kusunoki Masashige despidiéndose de su hijo Masatsura. En esta colaboración para la revista Ecos de Asia voy a incidir sobre la pieza que guardaba las manos, y por tanto la vida, de los antiguos samurai: la tsuba. A su función protectora hay que sumar que desde antiguo ha sido un lienzo en donde artistas del metal han desarrollado toda su pericia, motivo por el cual es una pieza sumamente interesante para el mundo de la Historia del Arte. Debido al carácter de la revista he querido dotar al artículo de aquellas claves imprescindibles para diferenciar las partes de un sable japonés, poniendo especial atención en la guarda o tsuba. En conmemoración del actual Año Dual España-Japón, es importante hacer notar que, al igual que en otras piezas del arte japonés, las influencias occidentales durante el siglo XVI (principalmente portugueses y españoles) marcaron tipos y tipologías en todas las piezas del nihontō y especialmente en las tsuba.

In Japan, since the Edo period (1603-1868), the nihontō or Japanese swords, and their fittings, have occupied an important part within the Japanese art market. The great value that some of these pieces will achieve, will make their analysis also the study of the Japanese economy during each of the periods and eras of its history. The different payment systems that support the economy of the warrior classes will remain reflected in the appraisal values present in the origami or certificates of monetary appraisal and cataloging of pieces. We will use these data as indicators of the value of the Japanese sword to draw a map of Japan's economy during the Edo period, and see to what extent these objects have influenced the capital of the Japanese nation.

The study is focussed on a (then) innovative intercultural and interdisciplinary comparison between sword-culture in Europe and Japan. It contains the first published  results of a direct comparison between blade surfaces on medieval Japanese and Merovingian Period European sword-blades polished in the traditional Japanese manner. In this context the crucial role of surface-technology by grinding and polishing for functional sword-blades is highlighted in detail for the first time. There is an English and a Japanese summary contained.

influencia o procedencia extranjera. Marcos A. Sala Ivars. Doctorando en Historia del Arte (III) por la UCM. Miembro del Grupo de Investigación Asia. Es mi intención concienciar a la comunidad universitaria y en concreto a los especialistas en arte japonés de la importancia del nihontō como obra y contenedor de arte. En esta ocasión voy a tratar con ejemplos específicos y de manera muy resumida una parte del kodōgu o pequeñas piezas de la montura del sable japonés. Debido a lo vasto del tema, he aprovechado este Año Dual Japón-España para concretar sobre piezas namban de manera que podamos hablar de este tema apasionante a la par que presento brevemente en escena cada una de las piezas a tratar. Con ello espero poder ofrecer una visión panorámica del estado en cuestión, así como despejar ciertas dudas sobre la utilización del término namban en este marco armamentístico en concreto. 1. El Nihontō como obra de arte. Hay muchas formas de nombrar al sable japonés, dependiendo de su tipología, tamaño… ken, tō, tachi, nōdachi, ōdachi, katanata, wakizashi, tantō, kaiken… sin embargo si hay una palabra para referirse a la generalidad de las hojas, especialmente sables, fabricadas en Japón ese término es Nihontō 日本刀. La evolución del nihontō (s. VIII-s. XIX).

Resumen: Las tsuba son las guardas de los sables japoneses o nihontô, estas piezas además de cumplir una función defensiva y de protección de las manos del guerrero es un "lienzo" susceptible a numerosas decoraciones y apreciaciones estéticas. Conservamos tsuba desde el Periodo Kofun (250-538), y su fabricación y perfeccionamiento se fue produciendo a lo largo de la historia japonesa siendo un trabajo secundario para forjadores de sables, constructores de armaduras y fabricantes de espejos. La creciente demanda de guardas personalizadas y con determinado tipo de forja y decoración produjo que hacia mediados-finales del Periodo Muromachi, (entre 1450 y 1570) hasta hoy en día, cientos de familias se especializaran en la producción de estas guardas, surgiendo la figura del tsubakô o artista de tsuba de los cuales conservamos miles de piezas y firmas de escuelas y artistas independientes. De entre estas escuelas o estilos hablaremos del llamado Nanban tsuba que acoge tanto guardas fabricadas en el extranjero como guardas japonesas que acogen en su decoración motivos occidentales. En cualquier caso estaremos trabajando con tsuba que reflejan las relaciones internacionales que tenía Japón especialmente durante el siglo XVI. From the first contacts between Spain
and Japan, one of the facets that has
most attracted the attention of the land
of the rising sun is everything related to
the warrior nobility or samurai class. In
this article we will analyze the Japanese
swords present in the public collections
of the Basque Country. This scientific
investigation supposes a pioneering and
reasoned study on these pieces, based
on the most recent publications in the
field of Japanese weapons, incorporating
previously unpublished translations.

La historia de esta muestra se remonta casi dos años atrás, cuando los kaji (forjadores) de la prestigiosa casa Bizen-Osafune propusieron una iniciativa para acercar el arte tradicional de la forja de nihontô (espadas y sables de fabricación japonesa) a la juventud.
The history of this exhibition goes back almost two years ago, when the kaji (forgers) of the prestigious house Bizen-Osafune proposed an initiative to bring the traditional art of the forging of nihontô (swords and sabers of Japanese manufacture) to the youth.

Desde los primeros contactos entre España y Japón, una de las facetas que más ha llamado la atención del país del sol naciente es todo lo relacionado con la nobleza guerrera o clase samurái. En este artículo analizaremos los sables japoneses presentes en las colecciones públicas del País Vasco. There are 12 Indonesian items in this collection compromising 10 keris and 2 short swords.

La exposición de sables japoneses del museo Bizen-Osafune llevada a cabo en el año 2014 en el Museo ABC de Madrid, supuso la mayor y mejor muestra de sables japoneses en la historia de España. Tanto en la innovación artística de los sables forjados en relación con la serie Neon Geneses Evangelion, como en las obras de arte de siglos pasados de esta tradición de forja del siglo XIII, esta exposición ha marcado un precedente histórico. En la muestra no sólo se exhibieron sables, sino también armaduras y partes de la montura del sable japonés, elaboradas por los mejores artistas de ayer y hoy.

The exhibition of Japanese swords from the Bizen-Osafune museum, held in 2014 at the ABC Museum in Madrid, was the largest and best sample of Japanese swords in the history of Spain. Both in the artistic innovation of forged sabers in relation to the Neon Geneses Evangelion series, and in the centuries-old works of art of this 13th century forging tradition, this exhibition has set a historical precedent. The exhibition not only exhibited sabers, but also armor and parts of the Japanese saber mount, made by the best artists of yesterday and today.

"Japanese tsubas: basic decorating techniques and terminology". The purpose of this article is to systemize the basic terminology of decorating techniques used in the making of tsubas, or hand guards in Japanese swords. Section by section, the author explains the difference between particular techniques as well as the complicated terminology used by manufacturers and researchers. The body of the article is  devoted to the openwork, relief, engraving and incrustation techniques. The author also focused on the finishing and working of the surfaces of tsubas. The historical objects  presented to illustrate each technique are drawn from the tsuba collection of the National Museum in Krakow, a gift of Feliks Jasieński.
