This publication is a collection of essential tools for practical ministry in jails and prisons. It includes scores of Christian ministries and other faith-based organizations that offer free Bibles, books, literature, and other important resources for correctional chaplains.

The article analyzes the media logic of urban acts of communication in early modern German cities. As is demonstrated by Cologne and Hamburg in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the growing use of print (particularly pamphlets) moved local conflict away from face-to-face confrontation into progressively more multifaceted modes of communication, increasingly expressed in both manuscript and print. In highlighting the mediality of early modern urban culture, the changing relationship between the urban community, public opinion, and forms of communication is addressed. The resulting effect from the interplay and complementation of oral, written, and printed means of communication is described as echoes that formed an urban resonating box—a constant polyphonic state including both the literate and illiterate.

This thesis deals with brewer Christian Bagge, who was one of the several figures of the  Danish era of press freedom 1770-1773. His numerous pamphlets in series 1 volume 8 of Luxdorph’s collection of press freedom writings have not previously been the subject of a
historical treatment. The thesis is provoked by earlier historians such as Holm, who considered these press freedom writings worthless and later writers such as Laursen, who only appreciated them as witnesses of the author’s mentality. Firstly, the thesis provides an assessment of the historical value of Bagges writings, especially which social problems
they uncover, and of his credibility judged by the preserved documents in the case. Secondly it offers an analysis of the response from the community represented by Bagges opponents, the press, and the judicial system. The conclusion is that the writings extensively meet the intentions behind Struense's  rescript of press freedom by revealing abuse of power, negligence, and irrationality not only in the Copenhagen brewer’s guild but also in the surrounding society. But 18th century Denmark obsessed with honor, class and facade had a quite different view of the freedom of press than Bagge, who was convicted of defamation by the courts. The analysis seeks to show, that in a society where value was largely judged by appearance, the form of
the debate was constitutive of the content. A blunt and unpolished language reflected the malicious intent, evil character, and untrustworthiness of the author in contrast to the insight, conscience and belief assumed by the rescript. Furthermore, the debate focused
mostly on Bagge’s social status, his murky motives for writing and a perceived threat to public order. His critics constructed an ideal public sphere consisting solely of the sensible and cultivated readers in contrast to the mob, which Bagge supposedly appealed to. But as history showed, the public might have benefitted from listening to Bagge instead of discarding him as an embarrassing troublemaker. When the monopoly of beer brewing was abolished thirty years later, many of his thoughts and observations were considered as relevant.

This thesis demonstrates that Tudor councillors and their clients raided the armoury of classical rhetoric to condemn sedition for over thirty years, using persuasive techniques which crossed confessional lines. It reconstructs, in fuller detail than has ever been attempted, the Tudor literary campaigns against rebels, tracing the origin and development of the anti-sedition oration in the works of Sir Richard Morison, Sir John Cheke, John Christopherson, Thomas Norton, Bernadino Ochino, Nicholas Udall, James Cancellar, Thomas Cranmer, John Proctor and others.

It begins by proposing a systematic framework for classifying early modern persuasive writings, arguing that the concept of the 'early modern public sphere' is flawed and unhelpful. Then, in analysing the major Tudor rebellions, it argues that governments employed a highly communicative style of politics at times of crisis. They opened emergency channels of communication with subjects, condemning disobedience but nonetheless listening to rebel grievances. Loyalist authors did not intend to subject government policy to public approval, or to communicate with the monarch by garnering public support: they were simply applying the Ciceronian idea that oratory is the best way to persuade the multitude. Tudor authors normally defend government policy not by appealing to the king’s absolute authority but by pointing out that policy had been approved by the king in Parliament.

Dit masteronderzoek is een onderzoek naar anonieme pamfletten uit de 16de eeuw die in Antwerpen gedrukt zijn in de periode rondom de Val van Antwerpen (1585). De focus is op Antwerpen gelegd omdat in deze stad vele deskundige drukkers en uitgevers actief zijn geweest. Van hen zijn er vier uitgekozen om nader te bestuderen: Jan (III) van Ghelen, Niclaes Mollyns, Gilles van den Rade en Mattheus de Rische.
Om een antwoord te kunnen geven op de vraag in hoeverre Nederlandstalige teksten in anonieme pamfletten uit deze periode een grotere betekenis hebben gehad dan de directe omgeving waarin ze verkocht zijn, is onderzocht of er in het buitenland sprake is geweest van een navolging van deze teksten, via vertaling of bewerking.
Tevens is getracht het tekstennetwerk rond de vier geselecteerde drukkers beter in kaart te krijgen door van elke drukker een portfolio op te stellen, de publicaties te vergelijken, originele teksten te achterhalen, illustraties te beoordelen op hergebruik en drukkersportfolio’s te vergelijken.
In het onderzoek is veel gebruik gemaakt van bibliografisch onderzoek aan originele pamfletten en digitale versies ervan in collecties van erfgoedinstellingen en (universiteits)bibliotheken.
Alle vier geselecteerde drukker-uitgevers bleken pamfletten over de oorlogshandelingen te hebben uitgegeven als een soort voorloper van de nieuwskrant. De drukkers hebben een keuze moeten maken ten tijde van de Val van Antwerpen, met een wisseling van de macht: het protestantse Antwerpen kwam onder Spaans katholiek bewind. Voor de ene drukker betekende dit een noodzakelijk vertrek, voor de ander een aanpassing van zijn portfolio en een keuze in geloofs- en politieke uitingen.
De vier Antwerpse drukkers hebben allen pamfletteksten uitgegeven over wonderbaarlijke (natuur)verschijnselen die ook in het buitenland opgemerkt werden. Soms is de Antwerpse drukker een navolger van dit soort publicaties geweest, maar dit masteronderzoek toont aan dat deze drukkers met hun teksten ook een voorbeeldfunctie hebben gehad voor collega-drukkers in het buitenland. De Antwerpse teksten zijn dan terug te vinden in een Engelse, Franse of Duitse vertaling.
Er is zelfs een bestendige relatie tussen twee drukkers aan te tonen: het is in dit onderzoek gebleken dat de Duitse drukker Jozias Wörli met regelmaat Duitse pamfletten heeft uitgegeven met dezelfde teksten als de Antwerpse drukker Mattheus de Rische. Het is aannemelijk dat De Rische hierbij het voorbeeld is geweest en Wörli de navolger. In een enkel geval is dit ook onomstotelijk bewezen.
Dit masteronderzoek heeft aangetoond dat anonieme Nederlandstalige teksten uit de 16de eeuw een groter belang in het buitenland hebben gehad dan tot nu toe bekend is.

In the second half of the seventeenth century, a number of political pamphlets and treatises appeared on the European balance of power (aequilibrium potentiae), which by then had already been argued against the concept of universal monarchy (monarchia universalis). The principle of balance of power became a prominent element of eighteenth-century state politics and political journalism, as well as one of the key concepts of the emerging theory of interstate relations. The term became part of the official language of diplomacy with the Peace of Utrecht (1713), becoming part not only of political thought, but also of the official political practice, and developed into one of the fundamental milestones of English foreign policy and political thought in the 18th centuries. The English economist, Tory politician and political pamphleteer Charles Davenant’s (1656–1714) pamphlet 'Essay upon the Ballance of Power' can be interpreted in this context, which was published in the first half of 1701 with the author’s two other political pamphlets in one edition, 'Essay upon the Right of Making War, Peace, and Alliances', and 'Essay upon the Universal Monarchy'. My paper intends to analyse the contemporary incorporation of the concept of balance of power into English political thought with the analysis of these three political pamphlets. My analysis is trying to point out how the principle of balance of power began to play an increasingly important role in European great power politics as well as in English domestic and foreign policy in the decades before the Peace of Utrecht (1713), and how Davenant’s political pamphlets can fit in this context.

Tongues as sharp as blades and pens mightier than swords are amongst the most recurrent metaphors in Western culture. This book investigates the reality behind the image: the political uses of different forms of communication – oral, manuscript, and printed – in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Venice. From council debates to leaks and spies’ reports, from printed pamphlets to graffiti and rumours, political communication closely intertwined with the wider life and economic activities of this cosmopolitan and thickly populated capital of a large empire.
Today we take it for granted that communication and politics influence each other through spin-doctoring and media power. What, however, was the use of communication in an age when rulers recognised no political role for their subjects? And what access to political information did those excluded from government have? In answering, this book offers an original reinterpretation of early modern politics. While traditional political historians view events from the windows of government buildings, social historians have taught us to look at history from below. Neither perspective is sufficient in isolation, because even the most secretive oligarchs, ensconced in the Ducal Palace’s most restricted councils, were constantly preoccupied by their vociferous subjects in the squares below. In early modern Venice politics involved the patrician elite with the rest of the population, including women, in a thick web of continuous communication extending from government halls to the barbershops around Rialto.

The lack of local literature bedevilled African and Nigerian literatures for a long time. This contributed in
no small measure to a few critics averring that Africa and Nigeria lack literature of any major type
especially of the traditional form. The twentieth century Onitsha Market Literature in Nigeria which came
in pamphlets, novellas, and chap-books is just an example to disprove this assertion. Within this
traditional but regional literature is a compilation of oral literary sourced works and documented
solutions to modern life issues. It is a potpourri of life experiences of Nigerians within the colonial and
post-colonial life. This paper, through pedagogical and bibliographical modes, situates the
development and effect of this onerous popular fictional phenomenon as a relevant precursor to the
origin and development of not only present day Nigerian Literature but also to a large extent, to the
Anglophone West African Literature.

Parmi les termes marquants de la langue politique, celui de « pamphlet » est particulièrement exemplaire de l’énergie polémique du XIXe siècle. Comme le genre qu’il désigne, le terme est avant tout polémique : l’assimilation d’un écrit à un pamphlet, péjorative ou non, n’en est pas moins révélatrice des tensions à l’oeuvre dans le lexique politique de la Restauration.
Comment celle-ci entend-elle le terme de « pamphlet » ? Comment s’illustre-t-il dans les champs politique et littéraire ? C’est ce que nous tenterons de déterminer à l’aide des écrits pamphlétaires de Paul-Louis Courier.

Presenting a "communism of textual matter,” Anti-Book explores the encounter between political thought and experimental writing and publishing, shifting the politics of text from an exclusive concern with content and meaning to the media forms and social relations by which text is produced and consumed. Taking a “post-digital” approach in considering a wide array of textual media forms, Thoburn invites us to challenge the commodity form of books—to stop imagining books as transcendent intellectual, moral, and aesthetic goods unsullied by commerce. His critique is, instead, one immersed in the many materialities of text.

"Frühneuzeitliche urbane Öffentlichkeit war geprägt von "fliegenden Blättern" in allen Variationen – Flugpublizistik im weitesten Sinne. Mehrblättrige Flugschriften, obrigkeitliche Einblattdrucke, illustrierte Flugblätter, selbst handgeschriebene "Zettelchen" flogen wortwörtlich durch die Straßen der Städte und prägten so das Meinungs- und Politikklima. Mit den teils fingierten, anonymen und pseudonymen Publikationen wurde Öffentlichkeit von einer Vielzahl von Akteuren opportun organisiert, wenn nötig inszeniert, teilweise kämpferisch behauptet oder auch korrigiert. Als papiernen Gegenwartsbeschleunigern kam Flugpublizistik in urbanen Räumen um 1700 eine Verstärkerfunktion zu: als mediale Impulse dynamisierten Flugdrucke die innerstädtische Politiksphäre, da sie räsonnementanregend auf illiterati und literati wirkten. Auf Basis eines Quellenkorpus von rund 600 Flugdrucken, das im Medienverbund samt seinen Akteuren kontextualisiert wird, leistet Daniel Bellingradt einen Beitrag zur Historisierung des Öffentlichkeitsbegriffes der Frühen Neuzeit. Städtische Öffentlichkeit um 1700 skizziert er als ein mit Stadtmauern umgebenes mediales Räsonierforum, auf das Flugpublizistik aktivierend einwirkte.

EN: The Interdict crisis of 1606-1607 was the culmination of centuries of tension between Venice and the Papacy has been the object of continuous interest by historians. Considering this tradition of studies and the latest contributions on this subject, the present research tries to explore the role played in the crisis
by the territories that were under venetian rule. Paul V’s decision to prohibit the celebration of the sacraments throughout the venetian dominions, in response to legislation considered detrimental to the freedom of the Church, was a further attempt to putting subjects against rulers and bringing the Serenissima face to face with the risk of internal collapse. The spiritual censures, and the nature of ‘war of scriptures’ that the conflict was to assume, meant that the subjects of the Serenissima became privileged interlocutors for the Princes involved in the dispute. The purpose of the present contribution is to analyse the forms and rhetoric of this dialogue, considering unpublished documents. Particular attention has been paid to the very first communications – both written and oral – occurred between Venice and the subject communities after the explosion of the crisis.

IT: La crisi dell’Interdetto del 1606-1607, deflagrazione di secolari tensioni tra Venezia e il Papato, ha riscosso un ininterrotto interesse storiografico. A partire da questa tradizione di studi e dai più recenti contributi sull’argomento, la presente ricerca intende interrogarsi sul ruolo giocato nei frangenti della crisi dalle comunità sottoposte alla Serenissima. La scelta di papa Paolo V di vietare la celebrazione dei sacramenti nei domini della Repubblica in risposta a leggi lesive
della libertà ecclesiastica si riproponeva di sollevare i governati contro i governanti, ponendo la Serenissima di fronte al rischio di un collasso interno. La sanzione spirituale e la dimensione di “guerra delle scritture” assunta dal conflitto fecero dei sudditi della Serenissima degli interlocutori privilegiati per i Principi
in contesa. Il presente contributo intende analizzare forme e retoriche di questo dialogo a partire dall’analisi delle prime comunicazioni – scritte e orali – intercorse tra Venezia e le comunità suddite nei primissimi giorni della crisi.

The events which led to the Venetian Interdict crisis of 1606–1607 include the approval of a law on emphyteutic leases that was designed to limit the expansion of ecclesiastical property. The law was approved by the venetian Senate in order to answer to a petition: this sequence of events can therefore be used to evaluate the close proximity of the Venetian petitioning system to the decision-making process. The preparatory documents for the presentation of the petition, largely unpublished, will allow us to evaluate the profound dynamics
of the dialogue between Venice and its dominion, as well as the structures, institutions, rhetoric and practices – both formal and informal – deployed to this end.

La crisi dell’Interdetto del 1606-1607, momento di deflagrazione dei secolari attriti tra Venezia e la Santa Sede, è stata percepita come una svolta periodizzante nella storia della Repubblica di Venezia e dei suoi Domini. Scostandosi in parte da questa lettura, i più recenti contributi sul tema hanno ravvisato nella crisi veneto-pontificia un punto di osservazione privilegiato per comprendere i meccanismi sottesi alla comunicazione politica in età moderna. Un simile approccio ha l’indubbio merito di contestualizzare in maniera più pregnante quella definizione di guerra delle scritture attribuita all’Interdetto già dai suoi contemporanei: il conflitto del 1606-1607 fu infatti combattuto a colpi di scritti e libelli destinati a un pubblico eterogeneo e sempre più vasto. In aperto contrasto con quel principio di segretezza che costituiva un assioma della prassi e della teoria di governo dell’epoca, i Principi in contesa si trovarono costretti ad aprire un dialogo con i sudditi: il Papato per esortare i fedeli all’applicazione delle sanzioni spirituali comminate
alla Serenissima, Venezia per difendere le sue ragioni e delegittimare l’ingerenza romana nella sua attività legislativa e giudiziaria. La polemica fu talmente pervasiva da coinvolgere testi non specificatamente pensati per contribuire ad essa, come le orazioni tributate dalle comunità suddite al doge Leonardo Donà, eletto in concomitanza della crisi. Nel presente articolo si tenterà di comprendere il contributo – più o meno volontario – dato da questi testi e dai loro estensori alla guerra delle scritture: a tal fine si è scelto di prendere in analisi l’orazione presentata per conto di Capodistria dall’ambasciatore giustinopolitano Niccolò Manzuoli e recitata a Venezia il 9 aprile 1606.

Texte violent, et généralement court, attaquant les institutions ou un personnage connu, le pamphlet se présente comme une modalité particulière de littérarisation du politique et de politisation de la littérature, dont les formes et les supports sont apparus très variables au cours de l’histoire. Contre les usages relâchés du terme, Marc Angenot avait entrepris, dans un travail pionnier, de réserver le qualificatif de pamphlet à une configuration discursive spécifique, porteuse de symptômes idéologiques, qui aurait connu son âge d’or en France sous la Troisième République. Cet article, qui constitue une introduction générale au dossier « Que devient le pamphlet ? », s’inspire de cette étude pour analyser les recompositions contemporaines de la parole pamphlétaire. De fait, si notre époque ne méconnaît pas le pamphlet, ce dernier ne dessine plus nettement les frontières d’un espace critique autonome, bien identifiable par ses acteurs, ses lieux et ses interactions.

A rather short, vehement text targeting either institutions or a public personality, the pamphlet can be defined as a peculiar modality of a literary-minded political writing as well as some kind of politicization of literature, whose forms and conventions have appeared in various ways throughout history. In a pioneer work intended to thwart the loose common uses of the word, Marc Angenot has established the term pamphlet exclusively as a specific discursive configuration thoroughly invested in the realm of ideology. He has located its rise to prominence in France in the Third Republic era. This article, which constitutes a general introduction to our issue « Whatever became of the pamphlet ? », draws its inspiration from Angenot’s study so as to analyse contemporary changes in pamphleteering. Actually, the reason why the pamphlet nowadays is not acknowledged as a proper genre is obviously linked to the fact that it no longer possesses a clear-cut framework for a self-contained critical space one can easily identify thanks to its own players, premises and interactions.

L’article s’interroge, en s’appuyant sur le cas français, sur le traitement que l’ordre juridique du discours réserve à la parole pamphlétaire. Si l’arsenal juridique semble aujourd’hui largement entraver la possibilité d’exercice du pamphlet, invité à renoncer à ses caractéristiques propres, il convient cependant de se méfier de liaisons causales trop hâtives entre l’évolution des dispositifs juridiques et celle de cette pratique discursive, car le pamphlet peut bénéficier d’une certaine latitude herméneutique des juges ou ruser avec l’ordonnancement normatif.

Comment les querelles modifient-elles l’état des collectifs littéraires ? À quels types de textes donnent-elles naissance ? Quelles sont les incidences potentielles d’un conflit entre deux écrivains sur telle question d’ordre littéraire ? Comment la querelle se dit-elle et s’écrit-elle ? Un questionnement qui ne cesse d’interroger les différentes formes de querelles littéraires et l’essence même du Parnasse.

Parsemées en menus paragraphes semblant autant de capsules (certains parleraient aujourd’hui de tweets), les notes constitutives de Sur la Belgique tissent la trame embryonnaire d’un pamphlet qui ne vit jamais le jour, du fait de la santé fragile de l’auteur. Leur aspect parcellaire, inachevé et, pour tout dire, parfois schématique dans leur propos ne doit pas pour autant, nous semble-t-il, amener la critique contemporaine à déconsidérer ce méli-mélo allant du croquis à la caricature et de la mosaïque au guide touristique – ainsi que le formulait Michel Butor : « tout livre achevé, plein, fermé, est ainsi un masque, une façade ; le livre véritable, le livre juste, est nécessairement, lui-même, ruine, délabrement, découvreur » (Babel en creux).
De fait, c’est bien de leur brièveté et de leur concision mêmes (renforcées par leur inachèvement) que ces satires tirent l’effet le plus abrasif. Il semble que la pratique du trait, de la pointe et de la chute permette en effet au style de Baudelaire de tourner pleinement en dérision l’esprit pesant et pataud qu’il croit identifier chez le Belge, ce choix esthétique visant à mettre en relief les procédés d’ironie et de sarcasme qui sont les siens – bien loin, donc, de tout discours construit, structuré et argumenté. Cependant, l’humour baudelairien ne s’arrête pas là. En effet, par l’enchaînement glissant de leurs aphorismes, par leur ponctuation particulièrement expressive qui désarticule parfois le propos, par leur esthétique pointilliste qui donne au phrasé une allure de zigzag permanent et sidère le lecteur, les feuillets de Sur la Belgique semblent même parfois offrir (comble d’ironie !) un exemple patent et non dénué d’une autodérision diabolique de ce que Baudelaire reproche précisément à l’esprit belge : son passage du coq à l’âne, ses « incongruités », sa « maladresse » voire ses « contrefaçons » – sans parler d’une certaine « présomption » sous couvert de nombreux « barbarismes ». Une posture doublement désenchantée, donc, que nous nous proposons d’approfondir dans cette communication et qui – si l’on en croit Verlaine – a peut-être, loin de l’image du « poète impeccable », pour « profonde originalité de […] représenter puissamment et essentiellement l’homme moderne » (« Charles Baudelaire », in Articles et préfaces).

The murder of a popular and high-ranking Lutheran cleric in May 1726 in the residential city of the Electorate of Saxony, Dresden, by a Catholic foreigner triggered both urban turmoil and a process of intense media recycling. This article is concerned not so much with the murder case in detail but with the 'publishing of the murder case' by the lively local and regional print industries. It will be argued that these publishing processes were moments of economically driven media recycling that had effects on the censorship regime. Analyzing the contemporary perception of circulating prints by the Saxon authorities shows clearly a very low level of censorship activity. When connecting the bits of evidence, it seems evident that the inactivity must have been caused by more than just the usual level of administrational incompetence: the relevant Saxon authorities were Lutheran officials working for a Catholic King, and they chose inactivity deliberately.

The French Revolution was historically unprecedented in that it dragged every individual, willing or not, from the private world of domesticity onto a public realm governed by the tyranny of journalism. Weaving together the common threads of the papers presented The New enfant du siècle, Carolina Armenteros suggests that Joseph de Maistre’s compelled entry into history formed him as a writer – by obliging him to develop divergent writing personas, by subjecting him to the Revolution’s polemical paradigms, and by simply driving him to write.

Ericus Walten (1662-1697) kende van 1688 tot en met 1692 een korte, maar rumoerige carrière als broodschrijver en polemist.  Hij mengde zich met meer dan dertig werken in de discussies rond de Glorious Revolution waarmee stadhouder Willem III de Engelse troon besteeg, in de machtsstrijd tussen Amsterdam en de stadhouder, in de Rotterdamse stadspolitiek en in theologische en filosofische discussies. Juist de gevaarlijke combinatie van zijn felle aanvallen op de kerk en de inmenging in politieke zaken zorgden voor zijn uiteindelijke arrestatie. In 1693 zocht de Zuid-Hollandse synode naar goede redenen om hem te vervolgen wegens godslastering.  Een jaar later, in 1694, werd hij daadwerkelijk gearresteerd. Walten werd in de Haagse Gevangenpoort opgesloten, waar hij in 1697 overleed; vermoedelijk door zelfmoord.

"Ni genre mineur, ni part sombre des Lumières, la littérature pamphlétaire a longtemps souffert d’un discrédit et d’une négligence historiographiques tandis qu’elle a pourtant fait l’opinion et l’événement. Instruments formidables de la liberté d’expression, les pamphlets sont le journalisme politique mais aussi la mauvaise foi par excellence et la dénonciation, moteurs les plus créateurs des révolutions. A la veille du grand ébranlement de 1789, cet art de commenter, d’expliquer et de diffamer s’est mis au service d’une actualité soudainement accélérée.
Le pouvoir royal qui depuis des décennies avait stipendié des plumes afin de saper les prétentions législatives des parlements jusqu’à les anéantir provisoirement lors de la Révolution du chancelier Maupeou (1770-1774), a poursuivi son œuvre à partir de ses dernières tentatives de réformes entre 1787 et 1788. Sa contribution absolutiste à inscrire le monde parlementaire sur le tableau noir des impérities chroniques de la société politique s’est vue dépassée par la recomposition extraordinaire de l’automne 1788 puis par le basculement fatal de mai-juillet 1789.
Parangons d’une fiction d’un régime monarchique partageur de la puissance souveraine et donc exempt de toute accusation de despotisme, les parlements ont été les premières victimes expiatrices de la Révolution.
Cette anthologie critique de vingt-trois pamphlets rend compte de l’acharnement médiatique dont ont été victimes les cours souveraines et leurs magistrats, de Paris et de province. Elle nous entraîne au cœur de l’histoire des institutions politiques et judiciaires de l’Ancien Régime au gré des fluctuations idéologiques entre 1787 et 1791 ; elle nous immerge dans un véritable folklore politique aux références foisonnantes qui représentaient la culture des auteurs et par conséquent l’apprentissage de celle des lecteurs.
Haro sur les parlements ! C’est enfin une histoire inédite de la fin des parlements dont la légende noire suppose nombre d’interrogations sur ce que l’on peut appeler « le parlementarisme d’Ancien Régime », une sorte de maladie infantile de l’absolutisme français.




Avant-propos


Les vingt-trois pamphlets que nous publions dans leur intégralité et dans leur contextualité constituent un ensemble cohérent à plus d’un titre. Ils concernent avant toute chose l’histoire parlementaire du XVIIIe siècle et en tant que tels, ils témoignent du rôle considérable qu’ont tenu ces cours de justice de l’Ancien Régime à la veille et pendant la première année de la Révolution française ainsi que de l’acharnement médiatique dont elles ont été les victimes. Ces quelques brochures ne sauraient représenter à elles seules l’immense corpus des écrits politiques ou diffamatoires, voire autres pamphlets en tous genres de cette époque pionnière que le grand spécialiste du genre Robert Darnton nomma il y a une vingtaine d’année terra incognita . Cette littérature que l’on a du mal à catégoriser mais que l’on appelle faute de mieux séditieuse, a souvent été comparée, péjorativement puis récemment positivement, à la littérature dite des classiques, celle des hautes Lumières, sous prétexte que leurs auteurs « Rousseau des ruisseaux » ou écrivassiers selon Voltaire, travaillaient parfois à la commande, à l’énergie et au plus offrant, des textes diffusés à des centaines voire des milliers d’exemplaires. Parmi la foule de ces anonymes ou de ces auteurs modestes pourtant et à toutes les époques sans exclusives, se sont mêlés des esprits les plus remarquables comme Voltaire, Condorcet ou autres Sieyès et Mirabeau.
Il n’y a dans cette anthologie nulle intention de rehausser la qualité de textes politiques, éphémères ou durables selon leurs succès ou leurs échecs, ce qui équivaudrait à comparer de nos jours les essais de nos philosophes ou les romans contemporains au Canard Enchaîné voire, pire aux tracts de moins de deux pages ! Toutefois, une publication d’une telle ampleur n’est pas anodine. Elle témoigne de l’urgence de combler une lacune dont l’historiographie récente , qui a véritablement pris conscience de l’ampleur d’un phénomène autrefois délaissé, n’a pas encore pris la mesure : la publication suffisamment ciblée et dans son intégralité d’un corpus ni partiel, ni best-sellerisé mais qui serait l’aiguillon d’une lecture vraie ; une lecture, accompagnée d’introductions contextuelles et de notes suffisamment explicatives autorisant une approche au plus près la réception que les contemporains pouvaient avoir de cette masse critique. L’anthologie invite donc le lecteur à saisir sur le vif l’imaginaire d’une institution essentielle, des débats qu’elle a fait naître et vu mourir, à prendre la mesure d’une histoire complexe, de son folklore littéraire aussi, qui a plongé ces ancêtres éloignés de nos représentants politiques modernes, dans l’opprobre, la dénonciation et souvent la Terreur, enfin d’apprendre aussi comment l’opinion publique a pénétré dans les alcôves de la philosophie longtemps réservés à une élite. Car entre 1787 et 1790, ce n’est pas seulement un monde de privilégiés qui s’est effondré, c’est aussi le moment où le principal contrepoids à la monarchie absolue, fort de ses prérogatives judiciaires et de ses « prétentions » législatives a cédé après des siècles de résistance sous les coups d’un pouvoir royal et derrière lui, avec lui puis très vite contre lui, d’un tiers état souverain.

Paru en février 1814, De l’esprit de conquête et de l’usurpation est signé « Benjamin de Constant-Rebecque, membre du Tribunat, éliminé  en 1802 », manière pour l’écrivain de se poser d’emblée comme un marginal, un exclu de la scène politique impériale. Quelques mois après la mort de l’Empereur déchu paraît Dix années d’exil, ouvrage protéiforme qui voit Germaine de Staël revendiquer, non sans véhémence, son statut de paria aux yeux du pouvoir napoléonien.
Pour ces figures d’écrivains exilés ou bannis – fût-ce simplement d’une institution comme le Tribunat –, la persécution exercée par le pouvoir et l’ostracisation qui en résulte, loin d’être dissimulées, sont au contraire exhibées, la rupture revendiquée avec un régime considéré comme illégitime, inique et mensonger. Rupture d’autant plus revendiquée qu’elle s’énonce dans le registre ou le genre pamphlétaire, marginaux par excellence. Tant l’exclusion de Constant, arborée avec fierté, que l’exil de Germaine de Staël, vécu souvent avec un stoïcisme teinté d’orgueil, choisissent le mode pamphlétaire pour s’exprimer. Loin d’être anodin, ce choix est révélateur de leur volonté de refléter dans l’espace du texte, par le genre ou le registre choisi, la position marginale qui est la leur dans le corps social et politique français : c’est en effet dans un genre ou un registre alternatifs, résolument à part, que bannis et exilés choisissent de dire la précarité et le paradoxe inhérents à leur propre position.
À la lumière des écrits précités, nous chercherons à mettre au jour la manière spécifique dont le pamphlet – comme registre ou comme genre, en prose ou en poésie – reflète la volonté de rupture professée par ces figures de l’exil et du bannissement, désir qui ne pourrait trouver à s’exprimer de la même façon dans aucun autre genre. Dans cette perspective, il s’agira entre autres de montrer comment l’écriture pamphlétaire permet comme nulle autre de transfigurer, de sublimer l’indignation du proscrit – laquelle, hissée au rang de sainte colère, permet de faire de son exclusion le signe de son élection.

Jüdisch-christliche Beziehungen seit dem Mittelalter“ der Sonderausstellung „Josel von Rosheim (1478 bis 1554) zwischen dem Einzigartigen und Universellen. Ein engagierter Jude im Europa seiner Zeit und im Europa unserer Zeit.“, Begegnungsstätte Kleinen Synagoge Erfurt, December 01, 2011 - April 27, 2012.
Der Vortrag von Matthias Rekow erläutert unter dem Titel "Feindbilder zwischen Tiermetapher und Antichristmotiv" die wesentlichen Grundlagen der Entstehung von Feindbildern. Dabei geht der Referent auf den Begriff des Feindbildes und dessen Merkmale ein. Ebenso thematisiert der Vortrag die Entstehung und Funktionen von Feindbildern auf verschiedenen Ebenen. Exemplarisch werden christliche Feindbilder benannt, gezeigt sowie auf deren Entstehungsgründe aufmerksam gemacht, die das spannungsreiche - oft mörderische - Verhältnis der Christen zu den in ihrer Mitte lebenden Juden seit dem Mittelalter prägten. Die Spanne der "Bilder" reichte hier von der Kennzeichnung der Juden als nicht-menschlich, die sich in diversen Tiermetaphern niederschlug, bis hin zu dämonisch-gottlosen Wesen. Als diese waren sie wesentlicher Bestandteil einer imaginierten Teufelswelt, die dem kommenden Antichristen dienen würde. Ergänzend werden Bezüge zum Thema der Ausstellung, dem Begleitprogramm "Zusammenleben und Ausgrenzen" und zur Stadthistorie Erfurts hergestellt.

Unmut und Auflehnung bringen stets eine eigene visuelle Kultur hervor. Künstler reagieren auf gesellschaftliche Umbrüche seit je her mit neuen Ausdrucksformen und Medien. So nutzten Meister wie Albrecht Dürer und Lucas Cranach den leicht zu vervielfältigenden Holzschnitt für ihre Botschaften. Ausgehend von der Reformationszeit stellt die international aufgestellte Ausstellung Kunst in Umbruchsituationen vor. Der Bogen spannt sich von frühneuzeitlichen Druckgrafiken konfessionspolemischen Inhalts, z.B. aus Cranachs „Passional Christi vnd Antichristi“ von 1521, über die sowjetischen Avantgardeplakate ROSTA FENSTER und expressiven Holzschnitte von Karl Schmidt-Rottluff und Max Pechstein bis zur Street-Art des Arabischen Frühlings. Nicht vergessen sind Installationen und Videoarbeiten.

Die Ausstellung "RE:BELLION // RE:LIGION // RE:FORM – Künstler agieren im Umbruch" in den KUNSTSAMMLUNGEN ZWICKAU Max-Pechstein-Museum findet im Rahmen der Lutherdekade vom 31. Oktober 2015 bis zum 24. Januar 2016 statt.

Vom 19. März bis 5. Juni 2016 wird die Ausstellung im Städtischen Kunstmuseum Spendhaus Reutlingen zu sehen sein.
