Philosophy of Pictures

The question of authenticity resulted from the philosophical discourse of discovery. The first rationalists imposed the scientific discourse arguing that the natural world covered events and reasons. The goals of science were given in the discovering of “necessary conditions”. The perception was not enough to interpret the events in this world. The project of rationalists focused on the vision (over other sciences) as a valid mechanism to unravel the truth (Hollis, 2011). Similarly to medical discourse, pleasure of sightseeing engendered a
psychological need in the subject. May we consult experts when have a
problem, or are experts resulting from the obstacles we come across with?. To put this in bluntly, doctors revise their patients to find a problem

Nous défendons la thèse selon laquelle les images sont phénoménalement transparentes : nous ne voyons (quasiment) jamais leur surface mais seulement ce que les images dépeignent, ce qui implique que notre expérience des images est fondamentalement une illusion. Cette thèse s’oppose à celle de R. Wollheim, qui fait aujourd’hui figure de position standard, selon laquelle nous percevons la surface et le depictum. Une même expérience perceptive, selon nous, ne peut avoir deux objets ou deux aspects. En ce sens, nous sommes plus proche de la position de E.H. Gombrich : nous percevons soit la surface, soit le depictum, mais jamais les deux. Nous cherchons toutefois à la radicaliser en soutenant qu’il est finalement très rare de percevoir la surface de l’image.

"Ludwig Wittgenstein nous aide à saisir l'importance du rôle joué par les images en philosophie. Il est des images, c'est-à-dire des théories, des idées préconçues comme celle de la définition ostensive, qui nous emprisonnent lorsque nous philosophons.
La notion d'image mentale se voit également souvent attribuer un rôle explicatif qu'elle ne peut avoir la plupart du temps.
Mais le philosophe d'origine autrichienne peut aussi nous aider à mieux penser les images comprises en un troisième sens qui est aussi le sens le plus littéral, à savoir comme ces tableaux, ces figurations que sont les peintures, les photographies ou les films. En effet, ses considérations sur la perception de l'aspect nous permettent de résoudre ce que l'on appelle le paradoxe de la vision des images. Ce problème tient à ce que lorsque nous voyons une image, nous ne disons pas spontanément que nous voyons ce qui est sous nos yeux, l'image, mais plutôt que nous voyons ce qui est absent, à savoir ce que l'image représente. En fait, la solution consiste à comprendre pourquoi « certaines choses dans le voir nous paraissent énigmatiques, parce que le voir dans son ensemble ne nous paraît pas assez énigmatique."

It’s a platitude – which only a philosopher would dream of denying – that whereas words are connected to what they represent merely by arbitrary conventions, pictures are connected to what they represent by resemblance. The most important difference between my portrait and my name, for example, is that whereas my portrait and I are connected by my portrait’s resemblance to me, my name and I are connected merely by an arbitrary convention. The first aim of this book is to defend this platitude from the apparently compelling objections raised against it, by analysing depiction in a way which reveals how it is mediated by resemblance.

It’s natural to contrast the platitude that depiction is mediated by resemblance, which emphasises the differences between depictive and descriptive representation, with an extremely close analogy between depiction and description, which emphasises the similarities between depictive and descriptive representation. Whereas the platitude emphasises that the connection between my portrait and me is natural in a way the connection between my name and me is not, the analogy emphasises the contingency of the connection between my portrait and me. Nevertheless, the second aim of this book is to defend an extremely close analogy between depiction and description.

The strategy of the book is to argue that the apparently compelling objections raised against the platitude that depiction is mediated by resemblance are manifestations of more general problems, which are familiar from the philosophy of language. These problems, it argues, can be resolved by answers analogous to their counterparts in the philosophy of language, without rejecting the platitude. So the combination of the platitude that depiction is mediated by resemblance with a close analogy between depiction and description turns out to be a compelling theory of depiction, which combines the virtues of common sense with the insights of its detractors.
