Korstanje M. 2024. The Future of Tourism Anthropology: New Problems, Old Solutions After the New Normal. Anthropology of Tourism, Apple Academic Press

Unlike other disciplines, anthropology has evolved from ethnography and the concept of alterity as its tug of war. From its inception, anthropology has made efforts to emphasize reflexivity in describing exotic human worlds. In this context, the "Other" was primarily an object of curiosity and reflexivity, if not a mirror for the ethnographer. In line with this, tourism anthropology has focused on the relationships between hosts and guests. The turn of the century has shifted this focus while challenging the concept of alterity like never before. If the "Other" was a subject of curiosity for ethnographers, it is now seen as a potential enemy that needs to be scrutinized-if not eradicated. This essentialized "Other" raises a significant question for the future and the survival of tourism anthropology. The future of tourism anthropology relies on what it has to offer in the "new normal." Just after COVID-19, the "Other" is not only feared but also denied.

This chapter will explore the philosophical quandary of sustainable event management as a main conceptual corpus, at least in reaching a long-lasting, positive economic impact in the community. Although the literature has advanced considerably and firm steps in measuring the economic impacts of event tourism have been taken, less attention has been paid to the problems that the generation of further profits leaves. The chapter offers a model based on factors, which include supra-structure, formed by a set of legal disposition; foreign investment; infrastructure and other material assets organized for the event to take place; power relations; and permeability. These last factors, power relations and permeability, are marked by the capacity of the system to close or remain open to foreign investment with lower or higher levels of conflict.

This chapter evaluates and discusses mapping and managing stakeholder engagement within sustainable event management as one of the most challenging disciplines following COVID-19. The pandemic not only ground the industry of events and festivals into an unparalleled halt but also global trade generally. What is important, in a post-disaster context, is resilience to adapt the new destinations to the celebration of international events. Further, the complex nature of engagement is examined. The events encompass a great diversity of actors, all of them following different interests; therefore, it is very hard to give a precise description of engagement. The different levels of engagement among stakeholders in event management and festivals are examined.

In the line of a new century, the question of sustainability and sustainable tourism has been placed in the foreground. This dilemma opens the doors to discuss the current crisis of identity the Western civilization is facing. The "other," above all the stranger, is seen as an undesired guest, a potential threat to the public order. In this vein, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated a stage of moral decomposition mainly marked by hostility against strangers, geopolitical tensions, as well as the crisis of the tourism industry. The present book chapter discussed part of Marc Auge and Zygmunt Bauman´s text to understand the future of tourism in a world without tourists. From different angles, both authors have shed light on the socioeconomic effects of global capitalism in daily life.

Cultural tourism has notably experienced a burgeoning growth over the recent years. The notion of culture has been widely studied in the social sciences, and of course it occupies a central position in the tourist system. Culture is a very hard concept to grasp, and today cultural tourism faces serious challenges. This book presents eight high-quality chapters that address the problem of heritage and cultural tourism in the new normal. Cultural tourism offers an opportunity to recover tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is a source of conflict among stakeholders. This book offers ways to overcome the obstacles to heritage consumption and lays the foundations for a new understanding of cultural and heritage tourism. The authors are well-versed and come from different cultural backgrounds and nations.

Immanuel Kant imagined a global society united by a common law, or legal jurisprudence, where all citizens have equal opportunities even despite their states´ arbitrariness. This stage was dubbed as hospitality. Kantian hospitality was mainly marked by the right of a stranger to be treated as a friend in peacetime. He uses the term universal hospitality to denote a stage of perpetual peace celebrated by governments which share the same constitution. This invariably leads mankind not only to the suspension of all wars but also to abolish all army forces. Also, the law of nations should be centered on a much wider federation of Free States (Kant 1939). Beyond Kant´ argumentation, for modern politics here is where the problem lies. What happens when democratic nations violate human rights beyond the jurisdiction of their homelands? How can we ultimately understand the human rights violations perpetrated by intruders in Rwanda or Argelia even Vietnam? Of course, Kant does not offer answers to all these questions but he gives a conceptual foundation to discuss them (Carson 1988; Molloy, 2019). As Miguel Angel Centeno observed, wars and peace are the necessary (vital) resources of civilization crystallized by the successful optimization of local resources. This book deals with the complex problem of global intervention and human right violations from different perspectives.

Maximiliano Korstanje presents an overview and analysis of the work of the Argentinian sociologist and physician, José Ingenieros (1877–1925). In fact, José Ingenieros was a seminal scholar who contributed directly to the formation of sociology in Latin America. Born in Palermo, Italy Ingenieros grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He trained in medicine, psychiatry, sociology and philosophy; he devoted much of his life to addressing societal challenges such as mass migration, imperialism, marginality, criminality and social identity.

Korstanje takes in turn the key areas of Ingenieros’s work and examines how his thinking can be brought to bear on the social challenges of today. In particular his work on mass migration and the “Other” have echoes in the problems facing many countries in the early twenty-first century. It is a valuable resource for scholars and students looking to better understand this key figure in Argentinian – and Latin American – sociology in the early twentieth century.

Artificial intelligence has revolved around the ideological core of social sciences as never before. Public opinion shows exegetes of AI and detractors who feared the advance of robots and AI in human life. Although AI makes life for humans faster and easier, no less true is that it reduces human autonomy, probably threatening future jobs. Quite aside from this, this chapter interrogates the impacts of AI and technology in science fiction movies. The authors analyze the critical position of different scholars regarding movies or Sagas such as The Terminator, Matrix, and HBO Saga Westworld. From a sociological perspective, they approach the problem of technology while placing it under the critical lens of scrutiny. In so doing, seminal voices like Paul Virilio, Jean Baudrillard, and Jacques Ellul are put in the foreground. Plausibly discussing the advance of AI in daily life is interrogating the future of digital society.

The specialized literature in disaster studies emphasizes the problems of applied research to forecast exactly the geographical zone or city where the disaster will take a hit. The term disaster appeals precisely to the lack of coherence in responses to outstanding, if not disturbing, events that impact notably society. For this reason, disaster management adopted the figure of resilience and adaptation to deal with post-disaster (pandemic) scenarios. Over the recent years, some voices have alerted on the importance of resilience in the tourism industry. The global pandemic that originated in Wuhan (China) rapidly disseminated throughout the world, paralyzing not only the tourism industry but also the global trade. The COVID-19 obliges us to rethink tourism in a feudalized (atomized) world without tourists. The current travel behavior, as well as the geographical borders, are being reformulated according to a post-pandemic situation. Beyond the material losses and lives, the COVID-19 seems to be a foundational event that redrawn the global geographies. This book chapter deals with the opportunities and challenges of tourism in Argentina just after the COVID-19. We look to answer the question: is post-disaster tourism literature an efficient instrument to put the activity back on its feet again?

In the present book chapter, we have interrogated not only the nature of dark tourism but also the evolution of tourism since the former century to date. We have offered a model based on three stages of tourism, each one conditioned by a turning point or founding event. Classic tourism was originated in the WWII end but finalized as a result of Oil embargo in 1970. A new sustainable form of tourism supported by heritage finally came to stay until the attacks to the US. The surfacing of new morbid form of tourism witnessed the exhaustion of an industry chiefly worried to face unnumberable global risks.

Over the recent decades, some scholars have alerted to the methodological limitations of tourist-centricity, which means the obsession with surveying tourists as the only source of vital information for applied research. Under some conditions, interviewees are of paramount importance to unpack some issues but to some extent, the obtained outcomes are not contradictory has been placed as the first point of entry in a hot debate among academicians. Interviews as well as other techniques have been widely used in the tourism field to understand travelers' behavior and preferences. The recent Covid-19 outbreak not only interrogated the methodological discrepancies of tourism research but also posed the following dilemma: how to study tourism in a world without tourists?

In recent years, some voices have alerted on the gender inequalities not only in the tourism industry, a private sphere where the authority seems to be monopolized by men, but also in academic research. These emerging studies have emphasized the role of women in scientific knowledge production and distribution. This chapter goes in that direction, interrogating the first Latin American center fully specialized in tourism and hospitality research, CIET. Founded by Regina Schluter and her colleagues, this center inspired thousands of professional researchers in the region standing for a leading platform for tourism research in Spanish. CIET has been a source of consult and excellence in research in Argentina and Latin America over more than three decades.

Over recent years, the philosophical dilemma of human rights has occupied a central position in the academic debate worldwide. Of course, tourism seems not to be an exception. Despite the promising economic benefits and multiplying effects of tourism, some voices have alerted on the problems and limitations of tourism management to achieve a fairer wealth distribution in local communities. Having said this, the idea of tourism as a key force towards a more democratic and prosperous society began to be placed under the critical lens of scrutiny. This chapter, in this context, discusses critically how tourism potentiates economic growth but under some conditions deteriorating (if not vulnerating) the basic rights of locals. The opposite is equally true. Local communities embrace tourism to boost their economies while paradoxically making them more dependent and vulnerable to external economic actors.

Over the recent years, scholars have focused their attention on dark tourism as a newly emerging and global trend. Without any doubt, dark tourism remains a morethan-interesting object of study for social scientists and academia. At first glimpse, dark tourism exhibits a new morbid taste generated in post-disaster contexts, as well as environments of mass death and suffering. Paradoxically, dark consumption opens a much deeper question revolving around human rights. This chapter interrogates the intersection of dark consumption (as a type of commoditizing process) and human rights. As Zygmunt Bauman puts it, one of the paradoxes of memorizing the tragedy is that its roots are ultimately forgotten. In consonance with this, the authors hold the thesis that dark tourism enhances resiliency and local community, but at the same time, it generates a biased story of what should be memorized.

However, our chapter is on the opposite direction, tourism is an expression of religiosity enrooted in Western Culture. this chapter explores the religiosity of tourism in order to expand the current understanding we have of this complex phenomenon. Far from representing a radical critique to some scholars or some position, this chapter aims to become in a contribution to expand the current paradigms in tourism-led research.

The sense of physical movement has changed forever. To put this in slightly other terms, dark tourism isolates
and replaces the tourists in the virtuality of cyber-space. This begs a more than
interesting point: we live in a world where tourists do not travel anymore. This
happens because the experience has certainly replaced the physical movement as
the key element that molds tourism (Kaelber, 2007). This and other interesting
connotations are placed under critical scrutiny in the present chapter. The importance these types of new tourism have received in the Academy is directly proportional to the changes the industry is facing. Still further, the question of whether
doom-tourism consists in moving to sites or destinations which are in the bias of
disappearance, suggests two important assumptions. On one hand, this industrial
world Urry mentioned has been changed by a decentralized and chaotic form of
production and accumulation. On another hand, the process of deindustrialization,
adjoined to the rise of individualism, is creating a form of consumptions that are
unique, special, and cannot be repeated in any way. This is consistent to what Yves Michaud dubbed as “new luxury”, which means the replication of patterns that, far from being communicated to others – as the classic travel stories – are tended to
reinforce pleasure-maximization and egocentrism (Michaud, 2013).

The tourism industry is often vulnerable to countless risks and global threats. The COVID-19 pandemic not only ground the industry into an unparalleled halt but also has interrogated the future of the activity. This chapter critically discusses the application of resilient to make more sustainable destinations. We hold the thesis that resilience opens the doors to a paradoxical situation. On the one hand, it accelerates the recovery timeframe just after a disaster takes room. On another, it commoditizes disasters to be consumed by a global audience.

Terrorism often targets leisure spots and tourist destinations because army forces and police are not taking a direct intervention in these pleasurable spaces. Tourists feel disgusted when they are subjected to countless obtrusive controls. Meanwhile, security officers play a leading role in mediating with foreign tourists while caring for them. Unfortunately, they are overexploited or subjected to indignant working conditions. As Professor Howie puts it, this happens because global capitalism expands according to the power of consumers, creating, in this way, some material asymmetries. The most important agents of capitalism are systematically left in a peripheral position. Quite aside from this, security guards play a leading role in ensuring the security and safety of global tourist destinations. Mega-events, such as festivals, sporting events, and royal weddings, are a fertile ground for terrorist attacks. The organization of mega-events includes the hiring of security guards to keep attendees safer. The present chapter synthesizes a part of an ethnography performed in security agencies in Argentina. Human trafficking is doubtless a major crime-jointly with terrorism and child abuse. It is estimated that more than two billion people are missing in the world each year. These numbers associate to human trafficking as an illegal act-known as well as slavery-where the victims not only are deprived of their liberty but also forced to be enslaved or sexually exploited. Trafficking victims include women, men, and children of all ages and social classes. In the field of tourism, human trafficking leads to sexual activities. Human trafficking is certainly based on a much deeper process where the victim is under-humanised, which the victim lacks any basic right or legal protection during its captivity. This under-valorisation process centres on what specialists dubbed "desensitization dynamic." The captor feels little empathy for the hosted victim or feels he or she should not be considered a human being. This process has been widely studied by clinical psychology, but little is known about the desensitization process in the fields of tourism and hospitality.

At the end of December of 2019, the first cases of COVID-19 alerted the health authorities about the rise of a new pandemic. Although some voices have claimed that mass tourism as well as the public and private transport system are fertile ground for lethal virus propagation, governments systematically overlooked these alerts. In this respect, COVID-19 generated an unparalleled halt to the tourism industry and the transport system. The globalization world sets the pace to new fractured geography fraught with geopolitical tensions, chauvinist, and separatist discourses without mentioning the rise of global fears and anxieties. Having said this, the chapter discusses critically the effects of COVID-19 and the future guidelines of research for the next years. The chapter holds the thesis the world is being feudalized towards an atomized climate that marks a new form of production/consumption. Far from being a foundational event, COVID-19 reaffirms culturally and symbolically a trend initiated just after the War on Terror was declared during Bush´s administration.

From its outset, the specialized literature in tourism fields has adamantly focused on the fragility of the industry. As it is best known, service sectors are inevitably sensitive to external or internal threats. Over decades, tourism research explored different academic paradigms in quest of answers to a pungent question: what is the future of the tourism industry? From different angles, scholars have devoted considerable time and effort to implement conceptual models to protect the tourism and hospitality industries. Nevertheless, the turn of the century witnessed a new stage of uncertainty, fear and anxiety for the West. Just after the attacks on the US in 2001, policymakers, practitioners and academicians enthusiastically adopted the risk perception theory as a valid guideline for understanding how the organic image of affected destinations can be protected. From that moment onwards, it was argued that the industry was in jeopardy because of countless global risks. These risks included political violence, terrorism, crime, natural disasters, and the environmental crisis, without mentioning virus outbreaks. It is difficult to resist the impression that these global dangers plausibly altered the forms of defining tourism as well as leisure activities worldwide. With the benefits of hindsight, far from being solved, these problems have certainly aggravated in the threshold of time. The radicalization of political violence, associated with an acceleration of climate change paved the pathways for the rise of new paradigms. Ultimately, experts agreed we live in a context of constant crisis. The concept of prevention or the precautionary doctrine (which illuminated scholars` works in past years) has very well set the pace for adaptation (adaptancy) as a main conceptual corpus of applied research today. New (morbid) forms of tourism have come to stay. Having said this, the present book, which gathers well-known and global experts specialized in the tourism crisis, explores not only the different crises the sector is facing but also its future in the years to come. The main argument toys with the belief that any crisis opens the doors to new opportunities, stages or moments that lead to the mutation of the industry. This book is recommended to post-graduate students, policy-makers, practitioners, and scholars who are interested in the turbulent times the tourism industry is going through.

At the end of December 2019, a new virus outbreak baptized by scientists as COVID-19 (SARS-CoV2) paralyzed global commerce generating millionaire losses in the world. The virus was rapidly disseminated to the western cities through international travel and the tourism industry, a problem which led governments to cancel international flights while closing the airspace. The WHO (World Health Organization) recommended energetically the imposition of strict lockdowns and keeping social distancing as two valid forms to mitigate the pandemic. In the question of months, the virus wreaked havoc in the main economies of the world grinding the tourism and hospitality industries to an unparalleled halt. To put things straight, to date, more than 37 million people have been infected and one million have perished. Afrgentina, a southern Latin American country, which adopted a stricter and longer lockdown in the beginning, was gradually

The present case study brings reflection on the power of pleasure (joy) to better the classic education system. Whilst pleasure was overlooked as an instrument to make positive feedback in students for classic education, PANCOE (and the laboratory of pleasure) goes in the opposite direction. The laboratory of pleasure stimulates students´ skills and performance through the articulation of pleasurable experiences. The results notably show that those students who participated in PANCOE have better degrees than those who did not take part in the experiment. At the same time, the endorphins liberated by positive interactive communication paves the ways for the rise of pleasurable experiences which dispose from better academic performances. Originally PANCOE was designed to standardize the learning process of foreign students. The goal was chiefly oriented to retain the student reducing the academic desertion, which means the rate of students who fail to earn a degree.

Doubtless, the host-guest encounter is mainly based on a climate of cooperation and hospitality. Nobody can travel to some destination where he is not welcomed. Having said this, the new HBO Saga Westworld put the crisis of hospitality in the West into the foreground. The present book chapter brings some critical reflection on the hospitality crisis at least in the West, accelerated by the fear of strangers. At the same time, we discuss some tangential topics associated with Artificial intelligence, the sub-humanization process as well psychological effects of terrorism in the Western social imaginary. Terrorism ignited a new climate of fear where the "Other" is not only frightened but neglected. This invariably places the West into a crisis of sense starting with the turn of the twentieth century.

Some authors have alerted on the state of crisis generated by Covid-19 in the tourism industry worldwide. The restrictive measures disposed by governments generated not only an unparalleled economic crisis but also serious social maladies in society and education (i.e., higher dropout rates and low academic grades). Needless to say that the tourism education was in crisis much time earlier than the Covid-19 pandemic. Echoing Sigala and Ratten, the authors hold the pungent thesis that Covid-19 introduced a new opportunity to reform the epistemology and the basis of the tourism education curricula. Centerd on the role played by pleasure and joy, which is boosted by the digital technologies, this chapter synthesizes the findings of PANCOE, a successful experiment conducted by the University of Palermo, Argentina, to reduce the dropout rates while improving students' academic performance. The experiment was drawn and applied in the years before and after the pandemic. Results show how pleasure plays a vital role giving students better opportunities in contexts of fear and deprivation.

The tourism industry is dynamic, constantly changing, and is particularly sensitive to shocks and external factors that are beyond the control of managers. Terrorism and natural disasters are just two of the current risk factors for western-based tourists seeking increasingly ‘exotic’ locations. What can individuals do to mitigate these risks? What are the responsibilities of tour operators to manage these risks? And what is the global impact on the tourism industry?

This collection of chapters from international scholars answer these questions using a wide range of interdisciplinary methods. They shed new light on emerging issues around sustainability, ecology and dark tourism. The concluding chapter speculates what the future holds for the industry as a whole, after years of disruption and potentially increased risks from climate change and political upheaval in different regions.

The series features monographs and edited collections to create a critical platform which not only explores the dichotomies of tourism from the theory of mobilities, but also provides an insightful guide for policy makers, specialists and social scientists interested in the future of tourism in a society where uncertainness, anxiety and fear prevail.

Examined here is an often used tactic by ruling powers to blame subordinates and victims when there is so-called collateral damage. Military powers often call those who resist invasion, 'terrorists'. Similarly, owners of capital and their functionaries typically blame workers and their unions when consumers are inconvenienced. In this regard, tourists and the tourism industry provide a fruitful heuristic. What this paper explores is more than the commonalities between terrorism and tourism, this focuses on the fact terrorist has learned its tactics from West. Worker union organization coupled to management theories provided to many terrorists, educated in the best western universities, of a modus operandis.

Religious beliefs cloud people's understanding of the meaning of terror, and this factor alone complicates the management of terror in religious tourism settings. In this chapter, we discuss the interconnectedness between religion and terror in the context of religious tourism. We examine the nature of security that provides safety for the religious tourist without adulterating the spiritual experiences of worshippers. Religious faith is known to provide the social trust necessary for a society to function systematically, but touristification of places of worship is often the cause of distress in many communities. Historically, religions have inspired useful leadership practices, and we conclude the chapter with a discussion on crisis leadership ideas that are apt for religious tourism management.

In the recent decades, new emergent forms of tourism emerged. Dark tourism not only has captivated the attention of many visitors annually, but also from Academy. Although some interesting studies have been published recently respecting this theme, little attention was given to the intersection of death with Smart Tourism. This chapter introduces the concept of Smart Tourism to promote the attractiveness of death sites, i.e. Trunyan cemetery. The discussion includes issues around Smart tourism perspectives coupled with the philosophy of slowness. Equally important, it fosters the idea of personification of space as an individual negotiation. How to apply the philosophy of Smart tourism on dark sites indicates implementation of ICT as for not only as individual information system but also expected for enrichment of value-added of place attachment which would generate the personification on the dark sites’ identity and images.

This essay explores the synopsis of the film Contagion (2011) that narrates the ethical dilemma of sacrifice in a post-disaster context. At first glance, it seems to emulate the situation during Swine flu outbreaks, radicalizing the political discourse in two directions. On one hand, China, a new emerging but undemocratic superpower, is portrayed as dangerous, disordered, and the Chinese as lazy. In the movie, the United States government intervenes to maintain the security of world health. The US intervention entails restricting the rights of democratic life such as mobility, trade, connectivity, and the distribution of food. The implication is that mobility and tourism facilitate virus outbreaks. This movie presents an ethnocentric discourse because it assumes that only mobility in the First world is safe. Global connections which enable the introduction of Third World from presumed uncivilized cultures lead to the possibility of apocalyptic pandemics.

This paper focuses on what promotes ‘hospitality’ into a norm within polities, leading to further mobilities of humans, ideas and cross -cultural exchange in an ever more globalized world. On this, the social sciences identified an anchor in practices commonly known as reciprocity, which are based on gift exchange or giving -while -taking. As the argument goes, hospitality derives from our social propensity towards reciprocity as an exchange of intangible gifts (cultural habitus). One of the social contexts in which the theory of gift exchange can be implemented concerns the role that the visa and other migratory requirements play in the (temporary or permanent) acceptance of any human subject by a nation -state. As a disciplinary mechanism imposing control over free movement, the passport produces certain types of subjectivity at ‘borderline’ spaces such as airports. We argue that an elaboration over the role of the passport as a regulatory mechanism promotes fresh interdisciplinar...

The advent of neoliberalism in the early 1970s marked a new age for ethical practices. Although pragmatism as an approach to ethics pre-dated neoliberalism, the neoliberal approach to political economy ushered in a new kind of pragmatism, owing little to Jeremy Bentham, even less to the American philosophical pragmatists Charles S. Peirce, William James, and John Dewey. Today’s pragmatism has permeated the penal systems of the central countries of the world capitalist system. A new ethics emerged, a neopragmatism. Acts came to be judged by their effects and not by the motives that led to the actions. This altered the doctrine of Abrahamic religions, and led to the disappearance of forgiveness as a moral good.

Purpose-This paper aims to revolve around two problems which, though imagined as different, can be addressed altogether. On one hand, the advance of terrorism as a major threat to the tourism industry, whileon the otherwe discuss the ontological nature of tourism as a rite of passage, which is vital to keep the political legitimacy of officialdom. At the time, paradoxically, social scientists shrug off tourism as a naïve commercial activity, while the main tourist destinations are being attacked by jihadism. This suggests the disinterest of ones associates to the interests of others. Design/methodology/approach-The author holds the thesis that tourism derives from ancient institutions, which illuminated in the growth of Occident and the formation of hospitality. Capitalism hides the importance of tourism as a mere trivialization as a bit-player. However, a closer look reminds precisely the opposite. The recent attacks perpetrated at main destinations reveal tourism as an exemplary (symbolic) center of the West, a source of authority and power for the existing hierarchal order. Findings-The issue captivates the attention of scholars, officials and policymakers, and at the same time, epistemologists of tourism receive a fresh novel debate regarding the origins of tourism. Originality/value-It is a great paradox that tourism would be selected as a target for jihadism but at the same time a naïve activity for social scientists or at the least by the French tradition. Despite the partisan criticism exerted on tourism as an alienatory force, this work showed two important aspects, which merits to be discussed. At a closer look, tourism should be understood as "a rite of passage" whose function associates to the revitalization of those glitches happened during the cycles of production. Second, and most important, tourism accommodates those frustrations to prevent acts of separatism or the rise of extreme conflict among classes.

This paper aims to incorporate dark branding into the dark marketing spectrum. The study's research question is: How do fake reviews in news media and the recency of non-existent hospitality establishment reviews influence the behavioural intentions of the viewer? The findings of a qualitative study on the place of interest, namely, a (non-existent) restaurant with fake reviews in news stories, were used as a background analysis. A purposive sampling technique and thematic analysis approach were adopted. Dark branding is conceptualised as a form of branding involving questionable ethical practices such as fake online reviews and forms a basis for consumer activism within the dark marketing spectrum. The approach of using emotional marketing, for example, selling mood/comfort instead of tangible products such as food, the novelty of service delivery, servicescape, and signature storytelling, are attributes of dark branding. Adopting an exploratory research method, this study is a first step towards defining the problem statement as a deceptive technique in information technology used by content creators to promote brands, and it is suggested that dark branding in tourism is a dimension of dark marketing.

The present essay review discusses the main contribution of David Altheide, a senior media analyst who has focused his efforts in deciphering the effects of terrorism in daily politics. In so doing, he has widely approached different themes or aspects of modern politics which include violence, terrorism, media logic, human right violations without mentioning mass media or what he dubbed as media logic. Today, one of his fears or worries denounced a couple of decades ago, are being discussed in the main academic circles of the world. This is the reason why we do consider convenient to offer readership a deep review of his main thesis, original ideas and controversial points. As he lamented, US democracy is in crisis and he explains why this happens.

PurposeGlobal warming is a huge challenge faced by the mankind in the twenty‐first century and beyond. The paradox of ecology lies in the pervasive attitude of lay people who overtly condemn pollution but do not alter their individual practices. Unfortunately, the scientific community has still not reached unanimous conclusions about the causes or impacts of global warming. To close this gap, the present paper aims to stimulate discussion in two main senses: the relationship between industry and global warming; and the role of tourism in the coming decades.Design/methodology/approachBased on reading and criticism of many works, this paper provides a conceptual framework for readers to understand social adjustment and adapting to climate change.FindingsMany sources blame the tourism industry as being one of the major contributors to global warming and want the industry to take proactive moves to help address this. Over years, scholars have focused on travel behaviour and leisure practices worldwide. The advance of applied research, anyway, overlooks the fact that there are considerable asymmetries in leisure practices between the Global North and the peripheral South. These inequalities were mainly crystallised in the COVID-19 pandemic, a founding event that accelerated a global crisis in the health system. Thousand of peripheral tourists, coming from countries with low access to vaccination, flied to the North in quest of vaccines. The present paper explores not only the dilemmas of Argentinian tourists who travelled abroad to be inoculated, but also the contradictions and conflicts with Argentinian governments who imposed several restrictions to their return. As a result of this, many compatriots have been stranded abroad without food, assistance and lodging.

Moved by the goal of paving the ways of a new the...

CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTER PROPOSALS One of the seminal texts, at least in the field of tourism anthropology, should be traced back to Dean MacCannell's book The Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure Class. MacCannell (1976) holds that tourism serves to be the glue of society, like the Totem in the aboriginal tribal organization. In contrast to other colleagues, of the caliber of Nuñez (1963), Van den Abbeele (1980), Turner & Ash (1975), MacCannell understands tourism as a total social institution, which beyond any ideological disposition, emerges as a natural result of global capitalism expansion. In consequence, leisure practices in general but tourism in particular gravitate furtherly toward the social cohesion necessary for society to be successfully working. Tourism seems to be more complex than a mere ideological instrument. Hence, MacCannell goes beyond articulating a bridge between structuralism and phenomenology.

the call for receiving professional book reviews on themes associated with tourism, hospitality and sub-service sectors. Needless to say, book reviews not only occupy a central position in the formation and consolidation of tourism discipline but also helps to foster newly integrated and hands-on strategies to make more sustainable (resilient) destinations. By reviewing books, scholars enter in a new world dotted with multicultural perspectives, while discussing critically materials, theories and ideas forged in other latitudes. In a nutshell, book reviews are the quintessential feature of knowledge production. Over recent years, the industry faced countless risks and challenges which spanned from over-tourism to the recent global pandemic (COVID19) without mentioning digital technologies and the rise of virtual tourism. Books forming this collection deal with different aspects of tourism and hospitality which remain crucial for the next generations. The book reviews should be written in English in 1.000 words or near circa. Those interested reviewers may inspect in the following link https://www.igi-global.com/book-series/advances-hospitality-tourism-services-industry/121014, and write to Maximiliano E Korstanje at mkorst@palermo.edu Other books or themes beyond this collection are very well welcomed. I look forward to hearing from you. Maximiliano E. Korstanje

Brief summary: This book will present a diverse range of case studies on how disasters, both natural and manmade, are managed in different parts of the world. Subject / Topic Description: Disaster management has become a major topic of discussion, given the increasing incidents of different kinds of disasters around the world. Greater investments are made in disaster preparedness and in disaster recovery. Best practice case studies are especially being sought out by disaster management practitioners as well as scholarly researchers. Full book description: According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, disaster refers to a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society at any scale due to hazardous events interacting with conditions of exposure, vulnerability and capacity, leading to one or more of the following: human, material, economic and environmental losses and impacts. The scholarly community has studied disasters from various perspectives and we now have a rich knowledge field of disaster management comprised of theories, models, and frameworks. However, what is less clear is how all these apply to specific disaster contexts. In this regard, situationally bound and nuance filled case studies, particularly those conducted in the aftermath of dealing with disasters, assume importance. There is a dearth of books meeting this need for the scholarly and practitioner communities. Interdisciplinarity: Disaster management, in its theory and practice, involves theoreticians and practitioners coming from different academic streams and professional practice areas. This includes sociologists, economics, psychologists, geologists, ecologists, technocrats, and business management consultants, among others. The editors are keen to support interdisciplinary research in disaster management, where this is relevant. The proposed book is going to be significantly interdisciplinary in nature, with management studies as the interlinking element. Impact: Wherever appropriate, we are committed to helping scholars achieve real world impact with their work. Thus, case studies with immediate practical applications are particularly welcome.

Since the turn of the century, the international rules surrounding security and safety have significantly changed, specifically within the tourism industry. In the age of globalization, terrorism and conflict have moved beyond individual high-profile targets; instead, tourists, travellers and journalists are at risk. In response to this shift, the series invites authors and scholars to contribute to the conversation surrounding tourism security and post-conflict destinations. The series features monographs and edited collections to create a critical platform which not only explores the dichotomies of tourism from the theory of mobilities, but also provides an insightful guide for policy makers, specialists and social scientists interested in the future of tourism in a society where uncertainness, anxiety and fear prevail. Tourism Security-Safety and Post Conflict Destinations will explore research approaches and perspectives from a wide range of ideological backgrounds to discuss topics such as: • Studies related to comparative cross-cultural perceptions of risk and threat • Natural and human-caused disasters • Post-disaster recovery strategies in tourism and hospitality • Terror movies and tourism • Aviation safety and security • Crime and security issues in tourism and hospitality • Political instability, terrorism and tourism • Thana-tourism • War on terror and Muslim-tourism • The effects of global warming on tourism destinations • Innovative quantitative/qualitative methods for the study of risk and security issues in tourism and hospitality • Virus outbreaks and tourism mobility

NRO ESPECIAL LLAMADA A ARTICULOS ORIGINALES

In order to complement the regular program with emerging topics in tourism research, the INVTUR 2017 conference on " Co-creating the Future of Tourism " will include a thematic session on " terrorism, risk and communication in a global world ". INVTUR 2017 aims to stimulate discussion and to introduce new approaches to explore emerging paradigms of value and knowledge co-creation in the marketplace that will lay the foundations for a new tourism ecosystem. This session addresses the conference aims by discussing the main threats to tourism in this new century, as well as focusing on ISIS and its jihad against tourism. This topic seems to be vital for well-functioning of tourism industry because Abu Bakr Al-Bagdadi recently declared the jihad against leisure-spots, or tourist destinations. This reveals not only tourism is in jeopardy but also terrorism aims to erode one of the mainstream cultural values of the western world: hospitality.

The psychological motivations to write a short note on the importance of book review in the fields of tourism coincides with my appointment as book review editor of the Journal of Tourism, Heritage & Services Marketing. In this respect, one might speculate the tradition of a book review is far from being consolidated in tourism research. As Korstanje (2010) observes, book reviews not only provides fresh insight to other scholars of new advances in the discipline –first and foremost in case of polemic theses- but validates a second viewpoint to the involving authors. In the English speaking circles, book reviewers are well-renowned experts in the fields they are convoked (Korstanje 2010). Sometimes books
are accepted and published in consideration of the potential profits, not the content quality. Under some conditions, books are certainly published by the author´s reputation with minor remarks in the review process (Korstanje, 2010)

ABSTRACT In an ever-changing world which characterizes by the decline of hospitality, the anthropological insight is essentially vital to envisage the future of Western civilization. Amitai Touval adventures to reach a much deeper and better understanding of hospitality; en his recently-published book, [An anthropological study of Hospitality: the innkeeper and the guest], which is formed by two chapters, he offers a more than interesting argument. The first chapter, which entitles The Inkeeper, speaks us of his experiences in Eastern Germany. Rather, the second one goes through 1 Maximiliano E. Korstanje-Doutor Em Sociologia. By thinking mobilities research today, it is invariably important to question the problem of climate change, mobilities injustice, global rights and of course the recent virus outbreaks (SARS-COv2) known as Coronavirous disease, which-in the strict sense of the word seems to be paralysing the world. This begs the question whether do COVID19 evince really the end of mobilities as know them? In the present handbook, editors present 38 chapters authored by different well-reputed scholars who come from the four corners of Europe. The encyclopedia, which looks to build a bridge between the theory and practice in mobilities research, is organised in four sections. Part 1 (motivations) deals with the current researchers´ motivations to discuss what Sheller dubbed 'mobilities justice'. Echoing this, Mimi Sheller, in the first chapter, explores the different material and cultural asymmetries (if not inequalities as forced migration or the lack of access to consumption in some minorities) created by the globalisation. In the second chapter, M. Freudental-Pedersen eloquently reminds the importance of changing the current mainstream cultural values of capitalism, as well as conducting responsible activism, to reverse the negative effects of climate change. D. Zuev and L. Nitschke, in the third chapter, explore the philosophical dilemmas of modern capitalism to encourage a sustainable consumption for the idealised (central) core while sharing the wasting pollution to peripheral regions. As authors overtly say, the aims of achieving clean cities mean pollution should be off-shored to under-developing economies. The following fourth chapter, authored by Sven Kesselring, proffers a more efficient and sustainable model to placate the climate change based on new individual mobility, new services to be offered to an eco-friendly demand and new emerging modes of mobility-led cultures. As he points out, mobilities seem to be unstoppable in the constellations of modern capitalism. A similar point leads M. Buscher (fifth chapter) to hold that utopia plays a leading role in the creation of future mobilities which help to create a method towards alternatives cosmologies to avoid the injustices of immobility. Complementarily, part 2 (methods) synthesises the ebbs and flows of applied research to approach the current mobilities-related issues. As editors overtly acknowledge,

Reviewed by Maximiliano E. Korstanje University of Palermo, Argentina Bill Rowson and Conrad Lashley are two authoritative voices who do not need a further presentation in the fields of hospitality. In this occasion, they present an edited book, which entitles experiencing hospitality. This editorial project, recently released by the leading publisher Nova Science, gathers 12 chapters oriented to build a bridge between theory and practice. Of course, the term hospitality not only denotes different significations-such as the dichotomy between commercial or non-commercial typologies-but also the figure of the hotel embodies ancient anthropological rites where hospitality occupies a central position, while it represents a unit for profits (for the hotel-owner). Hence, the book is a useful toolkit for social scientists and practitioners in the hospitality industry. In the introductory chapter, precisely, Conrad Lashley interrogates furtherly on the needs of narrowing the discrepancies and differences between the hospitality management tradition and the social sciences. While the former signals to develop the infrastructure to provide commercial services, the latter refers to the study of hospitality as a social institution. Though these traditions are not mutually exclusive they share contrasting conceptions of what hospitality means. In this respect, Lashley suggests that hospitality should be approached from three perspectives: the cultural social domain, commercial-industrial domain and private-domestic domain. The convergence of the three domains results in what Lashley calls "the hospitality experience". In the cultural domain, hospitality cultivates the host-guest relations and the human reciprocity ignited by hospitableness. The domestic domain marks the access of guests as entrants to private and domestic space. As he puts it, "the tension between private and public space is at its most intense when a domestic dwelling is also a commercial space sold to strangers" (p. 7). Finally, the commercial domain is based on the provision with food, accommodation and lodge which is exchanged to a rate. Commercial hospitality is offered to those who can pay for it. These represent the services we find in hotels or restaurants. These spaces are characterized by higher levels of efficiency, calculability and control than other forms of hospitalities. Hospitality should not be limited to the rites of giving-while-receiving ethnographers have documented in a non-western culture. Commercial hospitality seems to be standardized elements of hospitableness in a capitalist society. Having said this, the tourism industry would gain much whether the anthropological theories about hospitality are incorporated. The second chapter, which is authored by Roy C. Wood, explores the dichotomies of consumption in the fields of hospitality from a Marxist viewpoint. Echoing George Ritzer's notion of McDonaldization, Wood toys with the belief that the radical hospitality which Book review

Ahmad, Jared (2018): The BBC, The 'War on Terror' and the Discursive Construction of Terrorism. Representando Al-Qaeda]. New York, Palgrave Macmillan. ISBN 978-331976607-2.

Alan Warde. Consumption: a sociological analysis. New York, Palgrave Macmillan, 2017. At the height of orthodox economics, consumption was historically seen-or, at best, conceived pejoratively-as an anomaly of economic performance. Until the 70s, a decade that saw radical shifts in economic literature, consumption was systematically vilified as a glitch that unless regulated, would lead society towards bankruptcy. In fact, the fear and self-loathing manifested to the rise and expansion of poverty in the country-a discourse that was originally introduced as a part of the left-wing view that poverty was a structural phenomenon-had condemned consumption to a necessary evil. From that moment on, the discourse began to emphasize consumption as the mechanism that could mitigate the negative effects of stock and market crises. Consumption, from that moment on, was situated as the touchstone of economic doctrine (Donohue, 2003; Korstanje, 2018). This is the point of departure for Alan Warde's Consumption, in which he explains that social scientists have always shaped and defined what consumption is. The concept has historically taken many shapes and definitions and has been subject to many interpretations that vary depending on the disciplines involved, as Warde eloquently observes. Each discipline has fleshed out its own conceptual corpus revolving around consumption. Warde's book aims to provide an all-encompassing model to expand the current understanding of consumption. Although it is normally conceptualized as belonging to the field of economics, consumption may be framed as the anthropological need for distinction. This opens some interesting questions regarding the extent to which sociology is an appropriate lens through which to explore consumption or whether consumption should be studied interdisciplinarily. Warde-following Pierre Bourdieu-attempts to respond to these questions. Bourdieu strongly believed consumption was social in essence, and therefore, asserted that consumption could be explained by sociology. Warde, recognizing the influence of Bourdieu, organizes his book into four parts, each one discussing valuable aspects of globalization and the culture of consumption. The first section dissects the first approaches, contributions, and limitations of sociology, while the second explores a much refined technical debate around the epistemology of consumption. In the third section of the work, Warde maintains that sociology is indeed the lens through which consumption can be examined; he reiterates Bourdieu's assertion that consumption cannot be dissociated from other derived terms such as taste, class, and social scaffolding. In view of this, it is sociology-not economy-that is the discipline that is most prepared to study the phenomenon. Complementarily, the fourth section exhibits a critical viewpoint on the role of consumption and its effects not only in daily life but on contemporary society. It is important not to lose the sight of the fact that while there are no serious disparities among disciplines regarding the nature of consumption, there is a conflict of interest when it comes to agreeing on a consensus. Warde asserts that the act of consuming includes three clear-cut facets: acquisition, which denotes exchanges between two or more parties; appropriation, which signals the process of using the purchased object for practical purposes; and appreciation, which gives some insights into the emotional and psychological meanings attributed to the object. This last element is of particular importance in legitimizing social order. While some disciplines like economy stress acquisition, others, like sociology, focus on appreciation, as Warde contends. In capitalist society, the demand for goods is directly supported by production. Warde carefully reviews the major historical trends from the 1960s to date, all of which have provided varying viewpoints and understandings of consumption. From Marxism to postmodernism, as Warde explains, the sociology of consumption developed different positions,

Just when cultural imagings of tourism are regaining strength in applied-research, the project of Phillip Vannini invites readers to imagine the world of ferry transportation and its impact on the small island communities of Canada's West Coast. While conducting the field work for this participant-observation study, Vannini made 250 trips on British Columbia ferries and interviewed nearly 400 passengers and local inhabitants. The result is an ethnography that reveals not only how ferries condition life and the impact of tourism on the islands, but it also describes the great dependency on local populations generated by the tourism and hospitality industries. To convey how ferry arrivals and departures evoke emotions and structure the experiences of travelers and island populations alike, the author makes use of Victor Turner's well-known concept of the " liminoid " phase in pilgrimage rites. This book aims to demonstrate the importance of ethnography for decoding the deep connections between culture and technology. For, as Vannini shows, the study of technology is more than a straightforward recounting of tools, techniques, and technicians. The ethnographer must delve deep into the meaning of technology and uncover how human experiences and performances are constructed through this cultural medium. Unlike most other forms of transportation, ferries offer their passengers a nexus of time and space where play predominates over practical activities. The slow rhythms of displacement that characterize ferry travel facilitate an unusual sense of social cohesion among the travelers on board. In contrast, other forms of transport— such as cars, airplanes, and trains—create impersonality, alienation, and distrust. Because of this, security is of paramount importance to reduce the anxieties of the passengers in these other forms of transport. What the British Columbia ferry system means to the islanders is a complex matter. It has created connections with the wider urban-based society that have sometimes been beneficial to island communities in the short term but threatening to them in the long term. The islanders and their customs stand in sharp contrast with urban-based culture. Islander values are opposed to the hierarchal order that characterizes populated cities. The islanders prioritize the social cohesion and trust that prevail 154

Senior philosopher Ernest Sosa, who does not need previous presentation, brings to us in this occasion a new valuable book, Judgement and Agency, where he explores not only the account of human knowledge, but also its intersection with ethics. Starting from the premise that action, perception and knowledge correspond with manifestations of competence, he adds, individual performance should be framed as intentionally aimed to accomplish a set of preexisting (imagined) goals. This feature differentiates humans from animals. As this backdrop,Sosàs project is formed in fourth independent parts, which are finely-ingrained to inquiry how knowledge is produced and negotiated by agency. The first and second introductory chapters

In the recent decades, some voices alerted on the emergence of new morbid destinations, where the main commodity was death. Dark tourism, Thana Tourism, War tourism and so forth questioned the hedonist nature of sand ‑and ‑sun products. However, at a closer look, it is tempting to say that war and culture are inextricably intertwined. From this belief departs the present book which is entitled The Western Front: landscapes, tourism and heritage, authored by Stephen Miles. The main goal of this work consists in discussing the conceptual tensions between forgetting and rememorizing past battles and episodes of conflicts. Though much has been written about the archeological sites of battlefronts left by Second World War, less is said respecting to First World War´s Western front. Over these years, the western front has situated as some highly ‑demanded sites of tourists and visitors interested in knowing further on what happened in this historic and large ‑scale military conflict. An ever ‑growing industry of battlefields ‑tourism not only has imposed to draw the contributions ‑at museums and other types of exhibitions ‑ who lost their lives in wars, but also the current technologies allow the identification of " the missing " who are soldiers fallen in the battleground in which case families lost any contact with them. In this respect, Saunders in the foreword eloquently writes that " Yesterday and today the places where battlefield visitors go are framed (some would say corrupted) by commerce just as the conflict itself produced vast profits for war related industries. Different perspectives create widely varied responses to the modern commercialization of war, from the multitude of tour companies offering specialist itineraries to war ‑themed food and drink…. " (Saunders 2017: x). This leads us to think that wars have different connotations and meanings according to the moment and societal background; for example, wars are imagined differently while they are being struggled and for next generations once a considerable timeframe elapsed. Beyond its capacity of destruction war situates as a new alternative way of production which confronts ‑if not sanitize ‑ the glitches and asymmetries produced by economy. This book reflects not only the intersection of war with landscape and tourism consumption, but also the role played by heritage in configuring the " memories of war " .

Tourism has become an activity in many of islands destinations that has helped them to develop and grow economically, but also to express very complex realities to the point of creating their own characteristics. Within these realities, the islands, the paradise for many sun and beach tourists, are not on the margins of current trends in strategic planning and are redefining products under the idea of sustainability and differentiation-natural and cultural heritage-and with a high social participation in decision making and tourism governance developments that emerge from the island environment. The importance of tourism for islands should not just be seen from a macroeconomic perspective. Tourism income can support livelihoods in many island communities. It is also uniquely placed to benefit from, and provide support for, the special cultural and natural heritage assets which are a feature of so many of the world's islands. A congress on the islands brings together experts from different countries to explore the tourism in islands and opportunities to talk about changes in the face of such global problems as energy efficiency, urban planning, social and economic development, an opportunity to debate and learn about the most recent studies in this regard. This congress is an occasion for the study of their complexity, has to be multidisciplinary and 1 Universidad Europea de Canarias (Canary Islands, Spain) and Instituto Superior de Ciências Empresariais e do Turismo (Portugal).
