Tematyczne szlaki kulturowe od wielu lat stanowią nierozłączny element przestrzeni turystycznej i krajobrazu kulturowego Polski i Europy. Stanowią one nie tylko zorganizowaną formę ochrony dziedzictwa, ale również kształtują świadomość regionalną oraz zwiększają znaczenie i atrakcyjność obszaru w kontekście ruchu turystycznego. Ich funkcjonowanie w przestrzeni publicznej postrzegane jest często jako przejaw dojrzałości społecznej i administracyjnej w kształtowaniu wizerunku regionu.
Przestrzeń turystyczna Pomorza Zachodniego delimitowana jest w największym stopniu przez walory przyrodnicze regionu oraz bezpośredni dostęp do pojezierzy i wybrzeży Morza Bałtyckiego. Od kilku lat prowadzone są jednak prace i podejmowane działania zmierzające do aktywizacji regionu na rzecz przywracania własnej tożsamości i budowania wizerunku bazującego na historycznym i kulturowym dziedzictwie. Doskonałym przykładem takich działań jest powstanie szlaku tematycznego bazującego na wielowiekowej odrębności Pomorza i jego świetności pod rządami książąt z dynastii Gryfitów. Szlak ma szansę stać się sztandarowym produktem przyczyniającym się nie tylko do umocnienia poczucia tożsamości regionalnej, ale przede wszystkim do rozwoju całorocznej przestrzeni turystycznej, niezależnej od zmasowanego ruchu ukierunkowanego na wypoczynek w rejonie pojezierzy i wybrzeża Bałtyku.

Monografia stanowi próbę sporządzenia charakterystyki katedry w Pelplinie na Pomorzu w kontekście uprawiania historii kultury. Analiza obejmuje architekturę, malarstwo, rzeźbę, kreację słowa oraz muzyki. Dokonana jest z uwzględnieniem specyfiki budowli, tj. jej sakralnego przeznaczenia. W związku z tym kościelna przestrzeń widziana jest przede wszystkim przez pryzmat liturgii Mszy świętej. Ramy chronologiczne opisu koncentrują się na XVII stuleciu.

The House of Griffin or Griffin dynasty was a dynasty ruling the Duchy of Pomerania from the 12th century until 1637. The name "Griffins" was used by the dynasty after the 15th century and had been taken from the ducal coat of arms. Duke Wartislaw I (died 1135) was the first historical ruler of the Duchy of Pomerania and the founder of the Griffin dynasty. The most prominent Griffin was Eric of Pomerania, who became king of the Kalmar Union in 1397, thus ruling Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The last Griffin duke of Pomerania was Bogislaw XIV, who died during the Thirty Years' War, which led to the division of Pomerania between Brandenburg-Prussia and Sweden. Duchess Anna von Croy, daughter of Duke Bogislaw XIII and the last Griffin, died in 1660.
The dynasty is known by two names, Pomerania, after their primary fief, and Griffin, after their coat of arms, which had featured a griffin since the late 12th century: The first verifiable use of the griffin as the dynasty's heraldic emblem occurred in a seal of Casimir II, Duke of Pomerania, which showed the imaginary beast within a shield, and was attached to a document dated 1194.
The name Pomerania comes from Slavic 'po more', which means: 'land along the sea'.
The origins of the Griffins are not clear. Most theories derive them from either local Slavic nobility or a cadet branch of the Polish house of Piasts. Medieval Polish chronicler Jan Długosz connected them with Polish noble family of Świebodzice from the south province of Poland named the Lesser Poland, who also used a griffin as their coat-of-arms and who in turn might also have been a cadet branch of the Piasts. At any rate, chronicler Gallus Anonymus in his Gesta principum Polonorum calls the Griffins "close cousins" of then-contemporary Bolesław III of Poland, directly implying a close dynastic relationship with the Piasts.
In the 17th century, the Griffins derived their roots from legendary beings from Sorb mythology called Gryphus or Baltus.
The first known members of the Griffins were the brothers Wartislaw I and Ratibor I. Wartislaw would be the ancestor of the line of dukes that ruled the Duchy of Pomerania until 1630; Ratibor would be the ancestor of the Ratiborides branch of the Griffins, that was to rule the lands of Schlawe and Stolp (Slupsk) until the line became extinct and the area was incorporated in the Duchy of Pomerania. The first known member of the Swantiborides branch of the Griffins, notable as castellans of Pomeranian cities, was Wartislaw (II) Swantiboriz.

Water mills and rural settlement in the Dominion of the Teutonic Order in Prussia
The study is devoted to the closer discussion of the issue of location, economic function and the legal status of water mills in the Dominion of the Teutonic Order in Prussia. The aim of it was also to indicate factors having the largest impact on the shape of the water mills network existing here in the Medieval period. The situation in Prussia was determined by the policy of the Teutonic Order. The Order not only did it control the right for building water mills in knight’s estates but also, except in several cases, constituted the sole owner of water mills situated in towns. It was indeed possible only due to the fact that the Teutonic Order, as the biggest land owner in the state, had water regale at its own disposal. It would give it the opportunity to plan a network of mills relevant to the needs of the settlement network in foundation.
The location of a watermill resulted above all from the real occurring economic needs and adequate water conditions. Authorities tried to keep the largest possible influence on the decisions on locating new buildings. Owing to that, on one hand, in the content of documents detailed provisions banning constructions of new mills in a given distance from the already existing ones would be included, and on the other, a system of incentives was applied in the form of milling coercion enforcing specific settlements to use only the designated mill. Town and villages location laws are abundant with references to the existence of mills or, even more often, just the plans of building them. The Order, bishops and chapters, while issuing the documents, often reserved for themselves the right to construct such a machinery, excluding parts of the terrain needed for that purpose from general location laws. Issuing a permit to build and utilise water mills in exchange for rent and the system of reservation, had a considerable impact on the way mill networks were created and the rules of their functioning. Planning the economy of rural area in terms of water mills allocation was also manifested by establishing separate mill hamlets, which enjoyed the status of independent settlement units.
Water mills constituted an important element of the economic infrastructure of rural areas, and that their functions were closely related to the organisation of villages as well as the farms production profile, thus with the scale of grain cultivation in juxtaposition to animal husbandry. It also meant that millers had to cooperate closely with the village community, sometimes by means of regulations included in mill laws and location documents of individual settlements. Within the framework of colonisation campaign conducted by the Teutonic Order in Prussia, based on locating towns and villages, also a development of a whole economic infrastructure commenced, of which an important part, the water mill was. Attempts to control that process occurred already at the stage of town or village location, which is indicated in the mentioned clauses of reserving the places for anticipated milling facilities. Later, analogical control was exercised over newly built or redeveloped mills. The economic crisis of the state observed in the middle of the 15th century, indicated by the phenomenon of desolation of villages, would also result in water mill network regression.

This publication explores a complex landscape south of Polanów,
and its transformations over the last few centuries. The area is rich in early and late modern earthworks which have been investigated through various archaeological prospection methods. Recognising that the forest is a dynamic and complex entity, the impacts on archaeological discovery strategies are discussed. Thus, while the work identifies the role that the longevity of forest has had on the survival of archaeological monuments, at the same time, this volume aims to demystify the omnipresent woodland of West Pomerania. While increasing awareness of earthworks in the forest, that otherwise have rarely attracted the attention of inhabitants of the area, this volume also
draws attention to other actors in the landscape, including achaeologists.

Publikacja prezentuje wielowarstwowy krajobraz okolic Polanowa, a także jego przekształcenia na przestrzeni kilku ostatnich stuleci. Ukazana zostaje wielość i rozmaitość wczesno- i późnonowożytnych
obiektów archeologicznych o zachowanej formie terenowej. Jednocześnie analizie poddana zostaje efektywność różnorodnych metod prospekcji archeologicznej. Las rozumiany jest jako dynamiczny i niejednorodny fenomen, który wpływa na strategie prowadzenia badań archeologicznych oraz do pewnego stopnia definiuje odkrycia będące rezultatem tych badań. Publikacja omawia związek pomiędzy długotrwałym zalesieniem a stanem zachowania obiektów archeologicznych. Jednocześnie jej celem jest demistyfikacja powszechności lasów na Pomorzu Zachodnim. Opracowanie dąży do zwiększenia świadomości odnośnie obiektów archeologicznych o własnej formie terenowej, które zazwyczaj pozostają na marginesie zainteresowania lokalnej ludności, a także innych uczestników omawianego krajobrazu, w tym archeologów.

The article explores the naval raid of the Slavic forces on the coastal Norwegian port-settlement of Konungahella in the mid 1130s.  The paper analyse the raid in the context of regional politics and from the perspective of Baltic Slavs.  It also encompasses a wider political context of a contemporary Imperial and Polish politics.  It addresses the issue of timing of the raid, participation of other than Pomeranian Slavs, and the reasons why and what for it took place.  It focus on reasons behind the raid which are surrounded by controversy and various interpretations.  The paper postulates an alternative explanation not necessary as much politically motivated as commonly accepted.

WSTĘP Funkcjonowanie turystyki (a w szczególności turystyki kulturowej) na całym świecie w sposób nierozerwalny było i jest związane z ośrodkami miejskimi. To tutaj koncentruje się przeważająca część walorów turystycznych, zarówno historyczno-kulturowych, jak i rekreacyjno-przyrodniczych. Na miejską przestrzeń turystyczną składają się zatem elementy poznawcze, edukacyjne, rekreacyjne, rozrywkowe oraz związane z szeroko pojmowaną kulturą wysoką. Obiekty pełniące do tej pory funkcje jedynie usługowe, oferujące rozrywkę i wydarzenia o charakterze kulturowym (m.in. teatry, kina, filharmonie czy sale koncertowe) stają się coraz częściej przedmiotem zainteresowania turystycznego. Powodów jest co najmniej kilka – m.in. unikatowe lub historyczne założenia architektoniczne, bogata i nawiązująca do lokalnej tradycji oferta kulturalna, czy nawet dostępność i możliwości zwiedzania z przewodnikiem. Obiekty takie przyciągają zatem do siebie zarówno turystów indywidualnych, jak i zorganizowane grupy wycieczkowe, przekształcając i poszerzając w ten sposób przestrzeń turystyki kulturowej miasta.

Mill rent in the income of Eastern Pomeranian monasteries until mid-18th century

The article is an attempt to determine the importance of mills in the income structure of selected Eastern Pomeranian monasteries. The author focuses on the Cistercian monasteries in Oliwa and Pelplin, the Cistercian convent in Żarnowiec, and the Carthusian monastery in Kartuzy. The time frame includes the time between the foundation until mid-18th century.
The author has managed to establish that the milling economy of all these monasteries was quite similar. First, they sought to achieve self-sufficiency, and by imposing on their villages the obligation of milling grain only in the mills belonging to the monasteries, they had this part of their economy under strict control. By granting mills to hereditary tenants in exchange for rent in money or grain, the monasteries secured a permanent income for themselves. The costs of repairs, purchasing millstones and regular equipment maintenance were covered by hereditary tenants. Some contracts further stipulated that in the event of major repairs, the abbey would support the miller with wood and labour of its peasants. The millers were also often burdened with the obligation of free milling for the needs of monastery granges, which was offset by the above mentioned milling obligation imposed on the nearby villages. The amount of mill rent changed over time. The monasteries also sought other forms of contracts with the millers. Instead of concluding hereditary contracts, they bought out miller rights and re-granted them only for a specified period, usually for 10 years. This also allowed the monasteries to change the amount of rent on each occasion.
Although income from mills, expressed by the amounts of rent collected in money or in grain, was not impressive in the overall income structure of the monasteries, that income was earned usually without the monasteries’ own contribution, and it was a source of cash or grain. It must be noted that the Cistercian abbey of Oliwa was in a particular situation, because it benefited from the proximity of Gdańsk, whose merchants were interested in the industrial use of watercourses belonging to the Cistercians. In this way the abbey gained many tenants, who provided significant rent payments for the industrial mills they operated in Potok Oliwski and Strzyża. With these payments the mill income alone constituted as much as 10% of the abbey’s revenue. Some of the mills belonging to the other monasteries were also rented by townspeople, but the distance from Gdańsk was not conducive to direct investments. Therefore, in their estates water mills only had the traditional function of milling grain and were never used for industrial purposes on a larger scale. Since the mills were intended to satisfy the local needs of the monasteries’ rural economy, basically shaped in the late Middle Ages, there was a stable network of milling equipment generating a steady income.

Der Beitrag ist der Sammlung der deutschen Postkarten von Rafał Kubica aus Mieszkowice (Bärwalde), die fast 500 Sammelstücke umfasst, gewidmet. Die Sammlung wurde nach genauen geographischen und geschichtlichen Kriterien angelegt. Es handelt sich um die Postkarten aus dem Gebiet, das zwischen Cedynia (Zehden), Trzcińsko-Zdrój (Bad Schönfließ), Warnice (Warnitz) und Czelin (Zellin) liegt und die vor 1945 herausgegeben wurden. Wie der Sammler sagt, bedeutet das Sammeln der Postkarten für ihn „eine Reise in die Vergangenheit“, das Entdecken von Landschaften in der Neumark, die nicht mehr existieren. Die Kollektion ist ein umfangreiches ikonographisches Archiv, das das Kennenlernen, die Analyse der Kulturlandschaft und die Feststellung der Veränderungen in der Region in den letzten 100 Jahren möglich macht. Die Karten sind jedoch nicht nur Bildmaterial. Sie beinhalten auch die Texte, vor allem die Postkarten, die abgeschickt wurden. Dann werden sie zu einzigartigen Dokumenten, die aus Bild, einer Narration über das Bild, aus Informationen zum Autor und zum Empfänger der Karte, sowie aus genauen Informationen zum Datum und dem Ort des Entstehens, bestehen.
Alle diese Informationen haben dabei eine einheitliche und synthetische Form, was die methodische Untersuchung und Interpretation einfacher macht. Das sind die Gründe, für die die Sammlung von Rafał Kubica einen großen Wert für die die Forscher der Geschichte der Region hat.

It is widely accepted that the Viking Age (c. 800–1050) stimulated the development of long-distance, regional and local trade and exchange networks. The clearest archaeological evidence for these contacts is mainly in the form of silver artefacts predominantly found in hoards in Northern and Central Europe – the Baltic zone. However, beyond occasional national- or regional-level research, there have been no attempts at a historically guided comparative archaeological survey of the Baltic zone as a whole.

By investigating silver hoards and the context of their deposition, Viking Silver, Hoards and Containers seeks to understand the variety of functions performed by hoards; the differences in function within regions; the hoards’ relationship with trade; and the nature and function of emporia. It also examines the extent to which the findings mesh with literary evidence and the nature of the different societies benefiting from the influx of silver in the Viking Age. Crucially, the book features a catalogue, which provides a thorough overview and update of Baltic-zone hoards.

Viking Silver, Hoards and Containers is intended for use by students of, and specialists in, early medieval, Viking and Slavic history and archaeology. However, it will also be a useful teaching resource for other general courses in archaeology, anthropology and material culture, numismatics, economic history, religious studies, GIS and statistics.

Tematem rozprawy jest Młode Miasto Gdańsk i jego patrymonium. Ramy chronologiczne odpowiadają okresowi funkcjonowania tego organizmu miejskiego, od wystawienia przywileju lokacyjnego w 1380 r. po jego rozbiórkę w 1455 r. Młode Miasto zostało założone na północny zachód od Starego Miasta, jako czwarty człon wchodzący w skład późnośredniowiecznej aglomeracji Gdańska – obok Głównego i Starego Miasta oraz rybackiej osady Osiek. Krótki okres egzystencji ośrodka spowodował, że badaniami objęto nie tylko samą strefę osadniczą, ale także jego terytorium ziemskie (patrymonium) oraz relacje między nimi.

Rafał Kubicki, Around the monastery refectory - regulations and practices based on the example of mendicants from the territory of the State of Teutonic Order in Prussia.

The issue of feeding monks appears in numerous works produced as part of research on daily life in the Middle Ages. A closer analysis indicates two main types of sources considered by historians. Firstly, normative sources such as monastic rules, constitutions, decisions of governing bodies (provincial authorities, chapters); secondly, accounting sources, rent books maintained as part of the administration of economic affairs in monastic communities, as well as accounts and inventories of mendicants. Unfortunately, the preservation of this type of records is far from satisfactory, especially in the case of detailed accounts that quickly lost their practical significance and were usually not kept. In this situation, one can only refer to a very scattered body of source material, partially preserved for individual monasteries and different communities. However, it seems that even examining the issue of feeding monks based on these accounts can yield certain results. Considering normative acts allows for a fairly precise reconstruction of the place occupied by communal meals in the life of monasteries, including the conduct of communal life (vita communis) and the organization of the monastery itself related to the matter of feeding the monks. For this purpose, selected normative sources were analysed (the oldest constitutions of the Dominican Order and the treatise De Officiis by the Dominican Order's general, Humbert of Romans), which were compared with accounts concerning nutrition in mendicant monasteries from the territory of the Teutonic Order in Prussia (correspondence, legacies of townspeople to the convents, inventories of Observant Franciscan monasteries in Zalewo and Welawa). The importance of fishing privileges granted by founders to individual monasteries was particularly emphasized. Faced with numerous fasting periods in the orders, which accounted for over 40% of the year, these privileges imposed a diet based on meals prepared from flour-based dishes, vegetables, and fish. The significant role of monastery gardens as a source of fresh vegetables and fruits was also highlighted. Furthermore, the plans of selected mendicant monastery establishments were discussed, primarily in relation to the location of kitchens and monastery refectories (Dominicans in Gdańsk and Elbląg, Franciscans and Carmelites in Gdańsk, Augustinians in Reszel). Due to the lack of accounting sources, all the mentioned accounts were used for a partial reconstruction of the picture of monks' nourishment, its organization, methods of acquiring food products, and their types.

Kwestia wyżywienia zakonników pojawia się w licznych opracowaniach, powstających w ramach badań nad życiem codziennym w średniowieczu. Bliższa analiza wskazuje na dwa główne typy źródeł uwzględnianych przez historyków. Po pierwsze źródeł normatywnych takich jak reguły zakonne, konstytucje, postanowienia organów zarządzających (władz prowincji, kapituł); po drugie źródeł rachunkowych, ksiąg czynszowych, prowadzonych w ramach sprawowania zarządu gospodarczego w przypadku zgromadzeń mniszych, oraz rachunków i inwentarzy u mendykantów. Niestety stan zachowania tego typu przekazów jest dalece niezadowalający, szczególnie w przypadku rachunków szczegółowych, które szybko traciły swoje znaczenie praktyczne, nie były więc też zazwyczaj przechowywane. W tej sytuacji odwoływać się można jedynie do bardzo rozproszonego materiału źródłowego, zachowanego cząstkowo dla poszczególnych klasztorów, różnych zgromadzeń. Wydaje się jednak, że nawet spojrzenie na kwestię wyżywienia zakonników w oparciu o te przekazy może przynieść pewne rezultaty. Uwzględnienie akt normatywnych pozwala na dość precyzyjne odtworzenie miejsca, jakie zajmowało wspólne spożywanie posiłków w życiu klasztorów, w tym w ramach prowadzenia życia wspólnotowego (vita communis) i samej organizacji klasztoru związanej z kwestiami wyżywienia zakonników. W tym celu zanalizowano wybrane źródła normatywne (najstarsze konstytucje zakonu dominikanów i traktat De Officiis generała zakonu dominikanów Humberta z Romans), które zestawiono z przekazami dotyczącymi wyżywienia w klasztorach mendykanckich, pochodzącymi z terenu państwa zakonu krzyżackiego w Prusach (korespondencja, legaty mieszczan na rzecz konwentów, inwentarze klasztorów franciszkańskich obserwantów w Zalewie i Welawie). Szczególnie podkreślono znaczenie przywilejów rybołówczych nadawanych przez fundatorów poszczególnym klasztorom, które w obliczu licznie obowiązujących w zakonach postów, obejmujących ponad 40% roku, narzucały dietę opartą na spożywaniu posiłków przyrządzanych z dań mącznych, warzyw i ryb. Wskazano również na duże znacznie klasztornych ogrodów jako rezerwuaru świeżych warzyw i owoców. Ponadto omówiono plany wybranych założeń klasztornych mendykantów, przede wszystkim w związku z lokalizacją kuchni i klasztornych refektarzy (dominikanie w Gdańsku i Elblągu, franciszkanie i karmelici w Gdańsku, augustianie w Reszlu). W związku z niezachowaniem się źródeł rachunkowych wszystkie wskazane przekazy posłużyły do częściowej rekonstrukcji obrazu wyżywienia zakonników, jego organizacji, sposobów pozyskiwania produktów spożywczych i ich rodzajów.

Fresk Chrystus krzyżowany przez cnoty jest niewątpliwym skarbem Kościoła Mariackiego w Chojnie. Konającego na krzyżu Chrystusa otacza siedem młodych kobiet. Ich imiona można odczytać na coraz bardziej zatartych szarfach: Patientia (Cierpliwość), Humiltitas (Pokora), Oboedientia (Posłuszeństwo), Misercordia (Litość), Iustitia (Sprawiedliwość), Pax (Pokój), Caritas (Miłość). Głowy panien zdobią królewskie korony, a one same ubrane są w dworskie szaty. Ponad konającym Chrystusem artysta przedstawił Słońce i dziwnie uśmiechnięty Księżyc oraz dwóch aniołów poruszających kadzielnicami. Po obu stronach krzyża stoją jeszcze inne postacie najczęściej opisywane, jako Maria i Jan, Piotr – trzymający długi klucz, i Paweł z mieczem. Przy podstawie krzyża leżą czaszki i kość. To nawiązanie do nazwy miejsca: Golgota, Wzgórze Czaszki.

PL: Artykuł omawia historię kościoła grodowego (2 poł. XII/XIII w.) w Gdańsku i relikty architektoniczne, odkryte w Gdańsku po II wojnie światowej, które łączono z tą budowlą. Wskazano na niejednorodność zachowanych detali kamiennych (baz) oraz rozbieżności w ich chronologii. Poparto tezę K. Jasińskiego łączącego kościół grodowy z wezwaniem mariackim, wskazując przy tym, że rozbiórka świątyni w trakcie wznoszenia przez krzyżaków zamku konwentualnego (lata 30. XIV w.) zbiegła się z nadaniem patrocinium Najświętszej Marii Panny farze zakładanego wówczas Głównego Miasta (1343).

EN:The article discusses the history of the burg church (2nd half of the 12th / 13th centuries) in Gdańsk and the architectural relics discovered in Gdańsk after World War II, which were connected with this building. The heterogeneity of the preserved stone details (bases) and discrepancies in their chronology was indicated. There was supported The thesis of prof. K. Jasiński, linking the castle church with the invocation of St. Mary, which stated that the demolition of the temple during the construction of the conventual castle by the Teutonic Knights (1330s) coincided with the granting of the patrocinium of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the parish church of the then established Main Town (1343).

The article "Vineta, Sedina, Griffin: A choice of literary examples of pomeranian myths around 1900" tackles the topic of regional myths at the turn of the 20th century in the Pomera-nian region as found – or not – in literary works written at the time in that region. The author analyz-es three examples of myths: two of them are traditional elements of the  Pomeranian cultural heritage, as shaped around 1900; the third is a failed attempt to create a local (Szczecin) myth at the turn of the 20th century and the following years. The analyzed texts were published in books and elsewhere (e. g. on postcards) or could be found as anonymous pieces, saved in handwritten copies.

Das Herzogtum Pommern und Stargard während des Dreißigjährigen Krieges in Pommern
Der  Dreißigjährige Krieg kam im  November 1627 in  das  Gebiet des Herzogtums Pommern, als die sog. Franzburger Kapitulation unterzeichnet wurde. Als Ergebnis dieses Abkommens betraten die kaiserlichen Regimente von Oberst Ottavio Piccolomini die Quartiere in Stargard. Die Zeit der Stationierung der kaiserlichen Armee in der Stadt hatte einen starken Einfluss auf das Leben der Stadtbürger, die zum ersten Mal die Last der Unterbringung, der Kontribution und des Unterhalts der ausländischen Armee spürten. Die kaiserlichen Truppen waren bis Juli 1630 in Stargard stationiert, als die Stadt von der  schwedischen Armee erobert wurde. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt betraten schwedische Soldaten die Quartiere und unterdrückten die Stadtbewohner ähnlich wie die kaiserlichen. Das größte Unglück in Stargard begann 1635, als die Schweden ihre Überlegenheit im Dreißigjährigen Krieg verloren und die kaiserliche Armee im Gebiet des Herzogtums Pommern erneut auftauchte. Im Jahr 1635 wurde die Stadt vom kaiserlichen General Rudolf von Marazin belagert, und als Folge einer unklugen Entscheidung des die Stadt verteidigenden Oberst Jacob Bohm brach am 7. Oktober 1635 das größte Feuer in  der  Geschichte von Stargard aus, wodurch fast die  ganze Stadt niederbrannte. Im  Frühjahr 1636 begannen die kaiserlichen Truppen Stargard zu blockieren, was mit einem Sturm und der Plünderung der Stadt endete. Im Jahr 1637 wurde die Stadt von den kaiserlichen Untertanen erneut vollständig geplündert. Nach dem kinderlosen Tod von Bogislaw XIV. entstand im Herzogtum Pommern ein totales Verwaltungschaos, das bis 1640 dauerte. Es wurde durch die Errichtung der schwedischen Verwaltung
für Pommern im Jahr 1641 überwunden. Von da an begann für die Stadt Stargard, die durch die Unterbringungen, die Kontributionen und die Belagerungen zerstört worden war, eine neue Phase des langsamen Wiederaufbaus. Durch den Westfälischen Frieden von 1648 und die Grenzrezession von 1653 wurde Stargard in das Kurfürstentum Brandenburg eingegliedert.

The article “Between »Femme Fragile« and »Femme Fatale«. The feminine Element as Future Indicator for the Pomeranian Society around 1900 in Hans Hoffmanns Stories From Farther Pomerania [Geschichten aus Hinterpommern]” tackles the topic of the social image of women at the turn of the 20th century in the Pomeranian region as found in literary works written by Hans Hoffmann at the time. By analyzing three of four novellas enclosed in Stories From Farther Pomerania, the author of the article states that the feminine element is a potential social power for future history of the region as the book's author seemed to believe. In the article, features of this element, personalized by female literary figures, are described and analyzed in the context of the stories and the social situation of that era.

The book discusses the problem of the genesis of the Duchy of Pomerania and describes the process of its creation and the dynamics of transformations associated with it. The basis for the analysis became archaeological sources that may reflect the phenomenon of the centralisation of power. In the next step of the analysis, those archaeological sources were compared against the few written records that did survive.
The starting point for the studies was the socio-political situation as reconstructed for the end of the 9th century and the first half of the 10th century. It has been indictated that  gradual process of socio-economic and political changes  in the area began in the period between the last decades of the 10th century to the mid-11th century. At that time most of the old strongholds disappeared and the rest survived became seats of a centralised power.  The formation of a completely new organisation of the social space, together with cultural changes tha occured then, can be recognised as  a manifestation of the creation of new systems of power, a new type of social organisation, and perhaps new systems of values. a manifestation of the creation of new systems of power, a new type of social organisation, and perhaps new systems of values. Thus, the process associated with the formation of statehood in Pomerania should be dated to the time of the crisis and the collapse of the of the monarchic power in Poland from the one side, and the dawn of the Viking Age, from the other. 
However, only in the 1170s, the Duchy of Pomerania experienced the final consolidation of the systemic solutions that were characteristic of an early medieval monarchic rule in the Latin Europe. By that time, Pomerania had been ruled by a local dynasty for several generations. The Duchy had its own Church organisation and stable territorial administration. The ideological basis of the government was – as everywhere else – Christianity. Dukes minted their own coin and adapted other western European models and solutions. This was expressed, for instance, in the appearance of court officials at that time, or depictions of the dukes on seals and the obverse of coins in which they were presented as sovereign rulers. Despite all of this, within a dozen or so years the Pomeranian state lost its independence to neighbouring powers – first to the Kingdom of Denmark and later to the Holy Roman Empire.

ABSTRACT. In the following article one touched upon a few of the most essential questions connected with the development of the Pomeranian culture in Great Poland which, with our current knowledge, still remain unanswered. One partly summarized the polemics with the earlier opinions and then completed a questionnaire of the research questions. Apart from a short summary ofthe source basis one also touched upon the questions connected with the relative chronology and the relation of the Pomeranian culture with other cultural units of the early lron Age. Polnischen Intelligenz Posten in Chojnice (Konitz). Beitrag zur Geschichte Pommerns in der Zwischenkriegszeit


Die offensive Militärspionage der Zweiten Republik teilte sich organisatorisch in tiefe (strategische) und untiefe  (taktische) Spionage. Die tiefe war territorial nicht beschränkt. Die damit beschäftigten Offiziere und Vertreter befanden sich in politischen und wirtschaftlichen Zentren anderer Staaten, manchmal tausende Kilometer von Warszawa (Warschau) entfernt, wo sich die Spionage-Zentrale befand. In den Jahren 1919 – 1921 war das die II. Abteilung der obersten Heeresleitung der Polnischen Armee (NDWP), später umbenannt zur II. Abteilung des Generalstabs (seit Dezember 1928 – Hauptstab). Die untiefe Spionage lag im Geschäftsbereich der Ortsexposituren der II. Abteilung, die ihren Sitz in grösseren Städten Polens hatten. In den kleineren Städten bildeten die Exposituren in der Regel die Offiziersposten. Ihre Leiter sollten das manchmal zig Kilometer in das Nachbarland ausgreifende Vorfeld der eventuellen Militärtätigkeiten  ausspionieren. Um erfolgsarm die Grenzzone zu erkunden, musste die  untiefe Spionage auf der ortsansässigen Bevölkerung  beruhen. Ihre Eigenschaft waren also sich in kleinen Städten und Dörfern befindende Vertreternetze. Chojnice war der Sitz von einigen solcher Posten.
Vorliegende Bearbeitung ist eine zweite, erweiterte Probe, die Tätigkeit der Vertretungen der polnischer Spionage darzustellen. Die erste Kapitel bespricht die Vorbereitungen auf die Eröffnung einer Spionage-Vertretung der polnischen Militärspionage in Chojnice, während der Spionagedienst des Pommernfronts von General Jozef Haller gebildet wurde. Die Tätigkeit der Vertretung zur Zeit der Pommern - Übernahme von Deutschland 1920 wurde auch untersucht. Zum Schluss wurde die mit Chojnice verbundene Spionageabwehr-Tätigkeit bis 1921 erwähnt.
Das zweite Kapitel wurde der Tätigkeit des Offizierspostens in Chojnice gewidmet, die gegründet und der Expositur Nr.3 der II. Abteilung in Poznań (Posen) untergeordnet war. Sie arbeitete in den Jahren 1924 – 1926 und koordinierte die untiefe Offensivspionage im Ost-Gebiet des II. Reichswehr – Militärkreises  (Wehrkreis II).
Das dritte Kapitel beschreibt die Tätigkeit des Offizierspostens Nr. II, welcher 1929 bis 1933 Spionagetätigkeiten hauptsächlich in Westpommern ausübte.  Er war der Expositur der II. Abteilung in Gdansk untergeordnet, und ab der zweiten Hälfte des Jahres 1930 - der Expositur der II. Abteilung in Bydgoszcz (Bromberg). Untersucht wurde die Personen-Besetzung des Postens, Ziele und Arbeits-Methoden sowie Besetzung der in Deutschland platzierten Agenturnetze, die sich meistenteils auf polnischer Nationalminderheit stützte. Die Aktion mit dem Decknamen „ciotka“ (später „wózek“ genannt) wurde ausführlicher beschrieben – sie wurde 1930 bis 1939 realisiert und im Allgemeinen als eine er größten Erreichungen der polnischen Spionage in der Richtung Deutschland angesehen anerkannt. Diese Aktion beruhte auf Überprüfen und Wegstehlen der deutschen mit Zügen nach Ostpreußen transportierten Post.
Das letzte, das vierte Kapitel hat eine meist komplizierte Struktur. Hier wurden Spionage und Spionageabwehr auf dem Gebiet Chojnice (und Kreis) nach 1933 beschrieben. Das sind also die Tätigkeiten der Posten von der Expositur Bydgoszcz der II. Abteilung, des Grenzschutzes, der staatlichen Polizei und des Selbständigen Informationsreferats vom Bezirkskommando Korps VII, das in Chojnice seine Vertretung hatte. Ein getrenntes Teil des Kapitels bespricht das schwierige Nachkriegsschicksal der Personen, die bei der Spionage tätig waren. Der kommunistische Sicherheitsdienst begann nach dem II. Weltkrieg mit geheimer Beobachtung der ehemaligen Agenten und Offiziere  der II. Abteilung.
Eine Ergänzung bilden zu jedem Kapitel Geschichtsquellen, die die wesentlichsten und interessantesten Aspekte der Spionagetätigkeit der Vertretungen in Chojnice veranschaulichen. Die Dokumente wurden in dem Centralne Archiwum Wojskowe (Warszawa), Archiwum Akt Nowych (Warszawa) sowie Archiwum Straży Granicznej in Szczecin (Stettin) aufgefunden.

'THE SO-CALLED CULT STRONGHOLDS IN EARLY MEDIEVAL POMERANIA'
The major research issue to which this article is devoted is the identification and presence of settlement structures in Pomerania, referred to in archaeological literature as cult gords. The construction features and excavated sources, registered in areas enclosed with a ring of ramparts, have been charac-terised in the article as they can undermine the settlement or military functions of the gords. This is corroborated by a poorly preserved cultural layer (or lack thereof) and presence of artefacts and/or historical objects which would indicate a temporary (thus non-utilitarian) nature of the human groups' stay. The predetermined criteria were observed in more than a dozen Pomeranian gords, subjected to a possibly detailed analysis. As a result, further observations were made which allow to hypothetically include some of the surveyed gords to the group of facilities which may pertain to satisfying needs related to cults and rituals.
