Relatively little attention has been paid to biblical parallels to the wretched "I" of Rom 7:14-25. A few scholars have observed features shared with the psalms of lament, but these studies have been limited in scope and have proved inconclusive in identifying the "I." A comparison between Romans 7 and one of the psalms of lament, namely Psalm 119, reveals a number of significant verbal and conceptual correspondences, which throw fresh light onto previously unclear aspects of the "I"'s monologue. In addition , Paul's wretched "I" is revealed as inhabiting the same symbolic world as the Christ-believers in Rome, experiencing with them the resurrection of lament in Christ.

Le Ps 119 est le plus long de tous les Psaumes. Son importance n'est pas seulement due à sa longueur exceptionnelle. Il occupe une place et une fonction tout à fait particulière dans le Cinquième et dernier livre du Psautier (Ps 107-150). En effet, il se trouve au centre du livre, comme sa clé de voûte, et sa clé de lecture. Il est intitulé par la Bible de Jérusalem « Éloge de la loi divine », par la Bible Osty « Éloge de la loi », par la traduction de Dhorme « Psaume alphabétique sur les avantages de la loi ». Le titre de la traduction espagnole de La Casa de la Biblia est plus proche du texte ; en effet, il reprend à peu de chose près le premier verset du psaume : « Heureux ceux qui suivent la loi du Seigneur ». En réalité, ce psaume est une longue supplication, où le psalmiste demande à Dieu de lui faire connaitre sa loi, de lui enseigner ses commandements, de lui donner la force de les suivre, parce qu'il en est incapable. Une des demandes qui revient le plus souvent est « fais-moi vivre ». La vie ne vient pas de ma pratique de la loi, elle est un don gratuit de Dieu. Abstract Ps 119 is the longest of all the Psalms.

The law in Psalm 119 is identified very closely with God; it is life-giving, eternal and synonymous with God's word. The law is described as the way of true life and wholeness and is the supreme expression of God's love and faithfulness. The law understood in terms of the Trinity is not only God's command to the believer as they participate in Christ, but involves God's saving action on the believer's behalf as they are made into the likeness of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. Here law and love, mortification and vivification, find complete unity in the reconciling work of the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit.
