The so-called letters Ad Virgines, attributed to Clemens of Rome, are a complex text, both with regard to the identification of their historical production environment and because they are short but privileged witnesses of the ascetic literature of early Christianity. Above all, the Ad Virgines have a fairly complex textual tradition: in fact the Greek original is preserved only in scattered quotations in the Pandette of Antioch of Saint Sheba whereas
the complete text is known to us only through the Syriac and Coptic translations, both of which are witnessed in fragments or late manuscripts. In the present contribution, we will focus on the Syriac translation and we will analyze some of its most interesting translational features: the division of the text into two «letters»; «anachronistic» elements in the translation, and biblical quotations. The conclusion is that the Ad Virgines are a unique piece of literature, an exhortation, reshaped as «epistiles» in analogy to 1–2 Cl, perhaps already in the Greek original and translated into Syriac in Edessa, within (pre-)monastic circles around 3rd to 4th century.

La dimensione «ecumenica» del Salterio si può cogliere, in modo particolare, se si considera come in quest'opera è affrontata la questione dell'universalismo. Il presente contributo abbozza un'analisi del modo in cui nei salmi il rapporto tra preghiera e, appunto, universalismo è declinato –tenendo prima di tutto in considerazione alcuni testi singoli e poi il libro nel suo complesso. Le diverse modalità di rappresentazione del cammino verso l'unità dei popoli, ognuna associata ad una forma diversa di preghiera, costituiscono una delle premesse della visione neotestamentaria della Chiesa, sulla quale si basano gli sforzi dell'ecumenismo contemporaneo.

«Ricordare» è uno degli imperativi fondamentali della coscienza credente. Da questo punto di vista, il Salterio costituisce il tesoro di preghiera dell'Israele credente ed anche uno dei repositori della sua memoria. Come si articola, nei salmi, il rapporto tra memoria e preghiera? Come l'esigenza del ricordare ha plasmato la selezione e la forma poetica di questi testi? Lo studio cerca di offrire una risposta a queste domande analizzando il terzo libro del Salterio (Sal 73-89) e, in particolare, al suo interno, uno dei più importanti «salmi della memoria»: il Sal 78. Dall'analisi emerge come il ricordo costituisca uno degli elementi portanti della preghiera e della scrittura dei salmi, dato che la relazione stessa di alleanza tra Dio e il popolo – e le relazioni tra i membri che lo compongono – viene rappresentata come una «comunità di memoria», forgiata dalla lotta contro la tendenza umana all'oblio e dall'esperienza oscura del venire dimenticati da Dio.

The article deals with the vocabulary and the metaphors of the enemy in the III Book of the Psalter (Pss 73-83). Its aim is showing the elements of the theology of the enemy which emerge from the linguistic pattern and its context. In this perspective the foe is one of the main topics of the psalms' prayer: dead threat for the psalmist, contrast to his faith, instrument of God's wrath but, at the same time, occasion for revelation of Israel's sin and, therefore, for the escathological reconciliation which God intends to accomplish in human history.

Nel Sal 88 il salmista lamenta la sua condizione di «quasi morte» e lo fa in termini tali da innalzare una sorta di preghiera senza sbocco, tanto più enigmatica quanto meno sembrano comparire – all'interno del testo – segni evidenti di speranza. Tra le numerose immagini o metafore che l'io orante utilizza per descrivere la sua condizione, il presente contributo si propone di indagarne una poco studiata: quella della morte come oblio. Dopo aver identificato la struttura e la logica interna del testo, l'analisi si concentra su quei versetti (vv. 4-6.11-13) dove tale metafora appare più chiaramente, per poi tentare, nelle conclusioni, di coglierne la funzione all'interno dell'insieme del salmo e, più in generale, nel contesto immediato in cui è inserito il Sal 88 (Sal 84-89 e, in genere, il III libro del Salterio). L'accostamento tra morte e oblio rivlea come l'orante – al tempo stesso un io personale e comunitario – si percepisca confinato in una sorta di condizione liminare, sulle soglie dell'abbandono definitivo di Dio, condizione che viene concepita e, quindi, rappresentata come morte.

The present contribution aims at highlighting the different ways of portraying the king and the priest in the Book of Psalms, paying special attention to the possible parallels in Ancient Near East literature. By way of example, three Psalms (Ps 2; 72; 110) are analysed in order to identify the different attributes of the king and the priets and the merging of these two key figures in post-exilic Ps 110. Ultimately, the three Psalms show clear parallels with ANE literature and Königsideologie; nevertheless, the idea of the subordination of the king to the Law and to the one God mark a striking difference between the above-mentioned Psalms and ANE parallels. In other words, the Psalms use a common stock of images and words in a quite different way, in order to express a different view on the function and missione of the king and the priest.

Since ancient times, the Book of Psalms enjoyed great popularity, both in Jewish and Christian tradition. In the present contribution, an overview of the recent Psalmenforschung (from the year 2000 to the present day) will be given. The overview is structured in three areas (manuscript tradition; canonical exegesis; theories about the formation of the Psalter). A final conclusion tries to sketch out in broad terns the future landscape of psalms studies.

Psalm 74 is a communal lament over the destruction of the temple, an event that means, for the worshipper(s), a «loss of the centre», a destabilisation of the perception of space and time. These two dimensions are strictly connected, in Ps 74, to temple (space) and memory (time). The article try to analyse the interaction of the above mentioned elements in order to detect how they contribute to depict such a destabilisation. After a short discussion about the structure and the logic of the psalms, the verses in which memory and the temple are mentioned (vv. 2-8.18-23) are duty analyzed and a concise conclusion is then drawn. The worshipper(s) feel themselves in a situation of eternal present and without a centre, forgotten by God, since the distress seems to endure without ending. The memory of the covenant (v. 2) and of the victory of God over the primeval chaos at the beginning of creation (vv. 12-17) opens a possibility for hoping in a future re-stablisation of time and space, even if in an undetermined way (v. 21).

Il presente volume costituisce il tentativo di offrire al lettore un percorso di lettura di alcuni testi legati alla preghiera – cultuale e non cultuale – dell'Antico Testamento. L'intenzione non è quella né di essere esaustivi quanto a... more
Il presente volume costituisce il tentativo di offrire al lettore un percorso di lettura di alcuni testi legati alla preghiera – cultuale e non cultuale – dell'Antico Testamento. L'intenzione non è quella né di essere esaustivi quanto a materiale chiamato in causa né di affrontare tutte le questioni considerate dalla ricerca su questo argomento. Al contrario, l'orizzonte da cui è nato questa piccola ricognizione è soprattutto – ma non solo – la ben nota riserva che il lettore cristiano prova di fronte ad alcuni “passaggi ostici” dell'Antico Testamento stesso, gruppo nel quale i testi cultuali occupano una posizione di rilievo. Cosa hanno da dire, infatti, le minute prescrizioni del Levitico (un vero e proprio “manuale di macelleria sacra”) ai cristiani? Come conciliare certi passaggi, pesantemente influenzati da una mentalità “sacrale” e, perciò, “discriminatoria” con l'universalismo dell'etica neotestamentaria? È possibile leggere con frutto questo genere di letteratura che, in ogni caso, il cristiano considera ispirata e parte della propria “Bibbia”? La speranza di queste pagine è, quindi, quella di offrire uno sguardo rinnovato a questo genere di testi e un rinnovato apprezzamento del loro valore per una lettura cristiana integrale delle Scritture.

The present volume, which is the result of a panel at the 2019 SBL International Meeting in Rome, maps current discourses in Psalms research. The past decades have been marked by the paradigm shift from form and genre criticism to different designs of an exegesis that incorporates the environment of the individual psalms. More recently, it has been pointed out that the complex findings of the manuscripts from antiquity to the Middle Ages do not fit the notion of a fixed canonical text that some designs presuppose. The contributions in the present volume combine such basic considerations with
individual investigations of groups of psalms. With different methodological and hermeneutical approaches, they open up perspectives on the connections between the origin, composition and reception of the Psalms.

Che rapporto esiste fra parola di Dio e liturgia? Se oggi si parla di "sacramentalità della Paro-la", espressione comparsa in un recente testo del magistero (Verbum Domini), è grazie a un lungo ripensamento di quel rapporto. Il presente volume, scritto a quattro mani da un biblista e da un teologo, intende mettere a fuoco il concetto attraverso un itinerario strutturato in quattro momenti. Il primo ricostruisce il percor-so che ha condotto a formulare il tema e segue le tappe principali della sua acquisizione. Il se-condo si interroga sulla possibilità di un discorso biblico sul carattere "sacramentale" della parola di Dio, alla luce di alcuni passi dell'Antico e del Nuovo Testamento. Ascoltando il suo discorrere, proveniente da un mondo lontano eppure intrigante, perché intessuto di acute intuizioni affiorate nella meditazione dell’esperienza vissuta, siamo accompagnati nel cammino di crescita dell’uomo interiore. In questi Dialoghi sulle passioni dell’anima, per la prima volta tradotti in italiano, si individua a poco a poco con lucidità la condizione dell’uomo veramente “spirituale”, che trascende quella dell’uomo “giusto” stimato per le sue virtù e la sua ascesi. Aimed at identifying the function of the aspects of remembering and forgetting in the Psalter, this opus seeks to offer a lexicographical synthesis of zkr and skh in the Psalter and an analysis of their function in Book III (Pss 73-89) and in Ps 78, text in which the notions of remembering and forgetting occupy a relevant role. By so doing, the detailed focus on a particular portion of the Book of Psalms make it possible to highlight the importance of the theme of memory and that of forgetting in the whole Psalter, both from the point of view of composition of its global message and from the point of view of a focused re-reading of the traditions that have to do with the origins of Israel. For its readers the Psalter turns out to be a book about remembrance and for remembrance.

Il presente volume vuole essere un segno tangibile di gratitudine ed amicizia offerto da colleghi, amici e studenti al prof. Gianni Barbiero, ordinario di Antico Testamento al Pontificio Istituto Biblico di Roma, in occasione del suo settantesimo compleanno. Questa raccolta riflette, nella varietà dei contributi che la compongono, l'ampiezza sia dell’ambito di interesse del prof. Barbiero – i cui lavori spaziano lungo tutto l’Antico Testamento – sia delle relazioni di reciproca stima ed amicizia intessuti negli anni della sua attività di ricerca e di insegnamento. I ventiquattro studi qui raccolti coprono virtualmente tutto il canone delle scritture ebraiche: dal Pentateuco (Esodo e Deuteronomio), ai Profeti (Isaia in particolare) e agli Scritti, sezione più rappresentata (com'era da attendersi), con una particolare prevalenza di contributi (dodici) dedicati ai Salmi e al Cantico dei Cantici, i due libri ai quali il prof. To tackle this theme, Petrany sets her work at the intersection of two precise methodological coordinates: " the methodological locus of this study lies in the midst of two converging juxtapositions, namely the horizontal/vertical dynamics of psalmic speech and the relationship between individual psalms and the Psalter as a whole " (38). Chapter 1 offers a summary and well thought out analysis of the history of research, pointing out the parameters and limitations of the various suggestions. Petrany analyzes two principal streams of study: Formsgeschichte and the reading of the Psalter as a book. The first perspective takes as its basis the individual psalms and identifies the tradition of the sages by means of lexical, grammatical, and thematic criteria. The contribution of the sages' tradition to the psalms is seen as something late and foreign to the authentic (cultic) psalmic tradition. It is in this context that the question has arisen over the so-called sapiential psalms, a literary genre that is quite elusive, as is demonstrated by the diversity of positions and criteria adopted by the different scholars. and Syriaca, the Italian Association for Syriac Studies, are organizing a
Summer School in Rome for those who are interested in the Syriac language
and the history of Syriac Literature.
The program includes Syriac language classes in the morning and a general
introduction to Syriac literature in the afternoon. The scientific organization of the courses will be taken care of by Syriaca.
There is the possibility of both in-person and remote attendance. Salesian
Pontifical University also makes available the possibility of targeted archaeological excursions to certain areas of interest in the city of Rome.
