This article offers new material and a new edition of a unique ritual text from the first millennium BC in Mesopotamia, which describes a ritual for increasing the profit of the innkeeper. One of the text-representatives is written on a tablet with a handle, which was displayed in a Mesopotamian pub, which had the character of a bordello. The new score text presented here is based on collations of all known duplicates and on new copies by M.J. Geller. The primary aim is to publish comprehensive copies, a reliable transliteration, and a translation. Additionally, a publication history and a description of the sources are presented. Furthermore, text and context commentaries will be offered, focussing on one of the representative objects, a so-called 'amulet-shaped' tablet, or tablet with handle.

This chapter explores the role of disruptive practices within ethnographic research. Through fieldwork encounters, ethnographers inevitably influence the lives of the people being studied. Researchers have generally advocated reflexive approaches to examining relationships in the field and to the ways in which engagement shapes data. However, some have gone further, arguing for the merits of obtrusiveness as a strategy in fieldwork. Drawing on a multi‐sited ethnographic study of hospitality venues, this chapter contributes to this area of debate by examining how obtrusive practices can generate insights regarding cognitive and socio‐material processes in the production of consumption spaces. The chapter considers three areas of disruptive activity: firstly, embodied disruption, including co‐presence, social interactions and engagement in actions that challenge the perceived social order; secondly, sonic disruption – changing music in a venue to provoke and observe consumer reactions; and finally, research‐instigated visits with other consumers. The discussion examines how these practices were used to co‐create knowledge regarding the production of space and the experience of consuming hospitality. The chapter considers critically the potential benefits alongside the ethical and methodological challenges of adopting such approaches.

This intervention into the arrangements between tied tenants and their powerful pub-owning companies has one core mission: to ensure that tied tenants are no worse off than non-tied tenants. This article focuses on the "reasonableness" of "market rent only" offers in the underpinning Small Business Enterprise and Employment Act 2015 and the accompanying Pubs Code Regulations 2016, and its interpretation by published decisions of the Pubs Code Adjudicator.

Noise measurements were performed in six pubs and bars in Hong Kong SAR, China. The analyzed results show that Leq,10-min noise levels ranged from 66.5 to 79.9 dB(A) during happy hours, i.e., between 17:00 and 21:00 and Leq,10-min noise levels changed to 69.5 – 97.0 dB(A) during peak hours, i.e., between 22:00 and 23:30. The maximum noise levels Lmax ranged from 78.5 to 96.5 dB(A) during happy hours and they changed to 80.9～107.8 dB(A) during peak hours. It was found that loudness in a pub/bar can be characterized by Leq,10-min value while noisiness, i.e., background noise can be characterized by L90 value.

COVID-19 is an unprecedented pandemic that the UK has not seen the likes of in over a hundred years. UK Government public health responses to COVID-19 – in an attempt to control the spread – have resulted in several nationwide lockdowns and stringent restrictions. These responses have detrimentally impacted upon the hospitality industry and in particular the traditional British ‘boozer’.

Based on an in-depth participant observation of a traditional London Irish wet-led working-class pub, I will document the struggle for survival since the Coronavirus reached the shores of the UK in February 2020. I will argue that the pub industry and in particular wet-led pubs have been scapegoated in government rhetoric which subsequently became implanted within the wider public imaginary.  Pubs and the people who visit them were portrayed as promoting ‘reckless behaviour’ and as being a threat to the country’s control over the spread of the virus with customers and drinkers branded ‘selfish’ and ‘sinful’. The hostility towards public houses will be historically contextualised within discourses of ‘drunkenness,’ ‘disorder’ and crime and the hospitality restrictions as responses to containing and controlling the pub industry for the moral and economic good of society.

The government’s guidelines and regulations within the hospitality industry in England will be examined through Foucault’s framework of Panopticism, which will raise wider questions of surveillance creep, monitoring, increased social control and policing within the cultural consumption of alcohol within the space of the public house. I will link this back historically to the rise of the public house during industrialism which became the focus of working class leisure and the fear that this produced amongst the owners of the means of production in term of the struggle for social control and unsupervised working-class leisure, but also because public houses became sites of labour movement and class struggle.
