Quiero ser locutor...o locutora. Cuántas veces a lo largo de los años chicos y chicas ilusionadas por la profesión te confiesan este deseo. Quiero ser locutor...pero no sé por dónde empezar. Generalmente son alumnos que ya han tenido contacto con algún medio de comunicación audiovisual y allí han descubierto que el micrófono es lo suyo. A otros les han dicho muchas veces aquello de ‘¡pero qué voz tienes! Y directamente quisieron dedicarse a ello. Unos por su manera de expresarse y otros por su voz han decidido que quieren dedicarse a la locución profesional. Pero, exactamente ¿qué es la locución?

La radio es uno de los medios de comunicación más propicios para contar historias. Su poder estimulador la ha convertido en un soporte idóneo para hacer soñar al oyente. Pero los relatos de ficción en la radio se han ido perdiendo y por ello este libro nace con el objetivo de recuperar esa magia, analizando sus beneficios, y explicando paso a paso cómo elaborar una historia de ficción en la radio. Para quienes quieran idear, escribir o producir relatos de ficción en la radio, es un gran libro de apoyo.

Prove It: A community radio research methodology

Context
The UK has over 200 full time licensed community radio stations, all of which aim to deliver ‘social gain’. The Community Radio Order 2004 states this primary outcome to be: “Local services provided…for the good of members of the public, or of particular communities, and… in order to deliver social gain, rather than…for commercial reasons” (p. 3).

This definition of social gain focuses not on the broadcast output of the radio station but prioritises outcomes such as helping people into employment, improving the take up of public services, enabling access to local democratic processes or simply boosting well-being. 

For station managers who have been developing their community presence since 2005 evidence of social gain is experienced in day-to-day interactions and from listener/volunteer feedback. Yet managers struggle to see beyond a numbers based, audience focused, approach when faced with the need to attract advertisers. Quantitative research methodologies cannot demonstrate how and why audiences, community and stakeholders engage with their local community radio station. By repeatedly using narrow commercial methodologies the sector fails to properly account for itself.

Prove It
The changing and growing sector, alongside an ever-harsher funding environment prompted the ‘Prove It’ project; a methodology to help stations prove their impact beyond audience numbers – to funding bodies, their staff and volunteers and their communities.

This paper outlines the methodology and explores the results of the accompanying small-scale trial results of the methodology.  In particular, the paper will address how use of the toolkit:

1. Equips community radio managers and volunteers with the tools enabling them to carry out their own soft outcomes research and peer review.
2. Enables stations to assess their effectiveness in achieving their aims and to review their methods and projects to maximise the impact that they have with their listeners and community;
3. Demonstrates the effectiveness of the station to potential grant funders and service delivery partners thereby boosting the station’s ability to secure grants and service delivery contracts.  This is particularly important given the increasing financial pressure that stations are currently facing.

The methodology builds on a qualitative framework first developed by a team at Griffith University in Australia (2006). Combined with Griffith’s approach are quantitative methods that enable community radio stations to build a rich picture about their audiences, stakeholders and how successful they are in delivering social gain. 

Using the resulting toolkit, station staff and volunteers can carry out data collection - conducting street surveys, recording one-to-one interviews, and facilitating focus groups.  This is encapsulated by a ‘peer review’ (buddying) approach, whereby stations pair themselves to support each other and to collect data in each other’s transmission areas.

The paper argues that successful research methodologies are those that carry their worth over to practitioners and how research for community radio station is a key survival tool.

La radio española ha conquistado la confianza del público pero, al mismo tiempo, ha relegado su potencialidad creativa. Sumida en una etapa de transformación tecnológica, necesita ahora renovar sus procesos de producción para iniciar la recuperación expresiva del medio. Por eso, el propósito de este manual es que los profesionales descubran la radio en profundidad y sean capaces de producir todo tipo de mensajes radiofónicos potenciando su creatividad, a través de las normas que impone el lenguaje radiofónico y los nuevos recursos técnicos. Para ello, el libro se centra en analizar el lenguaje radiofónico como componente básico para producir contenidos, la tecnología y la técnica como herramienta que mediatiza todo el proceso y la estructura o narrativa de los géneros y programas radiofónicos bien sean informativos, de opinión o de ficción. En definitiva, en manos del comunicador radiofónico se encuentra pues el reto de poner en marcha un proceso de producción creativo desde su concepción hasta la realización misma de la pieza radiofónica para que la radio, además de confianza, continúe levantando pasiones.

The remit of the BBC as one of the foremost broadcasters in the world has been largely
unchanged in eighty years: to provide programmes that will inform, educate and entertain. The
BBC is also afforded by many the role of upholding the British language. As the 2003 News
Style Guide says, ‘our use, or perceived misuse of English produces a greater response from
our audiences than anything else. It is in nobody’s interest to confuse, annoy, dismay, alienate
or exasperate them.’
The BBC takes the style of its programmes seriously and throughout the years has produced
Style Guides and Programming guidelines. In particular it is the language of its news bulletins
which it feels has to be clear and effective, unbiased and grammatically correct. Many former
BBC radio newsroom journalists, interviewed as part of a larger study into radio news writing,
lament what they see as a decline in standards. This paper looks at the changing views on style
in BBC Style Guides for News programmes since 1967. It focuses on four elements in
particular: Americanisms, ‘try and’ vs. ‘try to’, ‘concede defeat’ vs. ‘concede victory’, and
‘go(ne) missing’. It then compares what the guidelines say with what was actually written in a
sample of news bulletins from the last forty years and occurrences of those selected words and
phrases in the British National Corpus. The aim is to determine if and to what extent the
guidelines on BBC language and the actual language might have changed.

La radio es voz. A través de ella se expresa y nos reclama. Es la voz del locutor con su amplia gama de recursos expresivos la que hace viva la comunicación y la conduce hasta nosotros. Dominar la locución entonces supone dominar el principal enlace entre la radio y el oyente. Este es el objetivo que se propone este libro: adquirir la versatilidad vocal necesaria que permita comunicar con eficacia cualquier contenido radiofónico. Cualquier estudiante o profesional de la voz, en especial, de la radio encontrará en estas páginas una guía que le ayudará a comprender todos los conceptos sobre locución para después aprender a manejarlos a través de una serie de ejercicios prácticos. Por tanto, no sólo sabrá cómo sino por qué debe emplear su voz de una manera determinada. Para ello, la obra se divide en dos partes: una primera dedicada a conocer y a educar la voz en las técnicas apropiadas y una segunda sobre el manejo de la locución aplicada a diversos contenidos. This thesis analyses by comparison the processes by which literature becomes deep-rooted and popular music noble, in Brazil, to grasp the different logics of constructing the nation through culture. We examine successively the differentiation of cultural production fields by analyzing, internally and externally, two sets of logical operators of classification : the books about history of Brazilian literature, published between 1888 and 1964, and the popular music programs broadcasted by radio between 1919 and 1964. The valorization of traditions and the consecration of artistic pantheons, in these two areas, go together with the construction of status (author, compositor, producer, critic), of cultural practices and forms (œuvre, genres, styles) that are new, from the producers to their audience. Then we confront these two processes in order to bring out variances and non-variances and apprehend the multiple forms of cultural nationalism. Putting in relation the morphological transformations of Brazilian society, the formation of national markets and of cultural policies, and also the migration and professional conversion trajectories, we contemplate the modes of transfer of essentialists schemes of classification between, on one side, the scholar and the popular, and, on the other side, the national and the foreign. It’s a question of understanding how the different strategies of objectivating the national contribute, by turning sacred a cultural heritage, to put in coherence differentiated processes, to the reification of the idea that a “national essence” would express itself in all the fields of social life.

It has always been stated that the radio is the invisible medium that has the greatest effect in stimulating the imagination of listeners. Therefore, this article intends to compare two kinds of presentation structure—dramatisation versus narration—in a fictional radio story to determine the extent to which the imagination is aroused and the point to which the listener becomes involved. The outcomes of the study point to the fact that the dramatised structure is the form of presentation that is best able to fulfil these aims.

Y así es como se aprende a realizar entrevistas y reportajes, a trompicones. Los trompicones propios de un periodista o comunicador que se enfrenta por primera vez con los que podemos considerar dos géneros radiofónicos más complicados de dominar. Desde que se empieza a trabajar en una emisora de radio no se para de hacer entrevistas. Y no sólo entrevistas como género propiamente dicho sino conversaciones para extraer información. Estaremos de acuerdo entonces en que la entrevista es el género más empleado en la radio pero no por ello el más sencillo. Su complejidad reside en que dependemos de otra persona, generalmente de un individuo al que no conocemos de nada. Por eso, cada entrevista es un mundo y esa es su magia. Aún así, existen ciertas técnicas que se repiten, independientemente del entrevistado. Esto es lo que permite, entrevista tras entrevista, ir limando los defectos de la inexperiencia, ir caminando más firme, a medida que se reducen los errores. Algo similar ocurre con el reportaje. Como la entrevista tampoco es un género sencillo de elaborar. Al contrario, se asoma poco a la radio precisamente por una cuidosa elaboración que exige demasiado tiempo al apresurado periodista o comunicador radiofónico. Pero cuando se tiene la oportunidad de trabajar en fin de semana o en épocas de menor actividad informativa, el cuerpo exige la dosis de creatividad que impone un reportaje. Y así es como, reportaje tras reportaje, se aprende a elaborarlos con mayor atracción para el oyente. Trompicón tras trompicón se pule la técnica, según se reducen los errores. Y todos esos errores sobre los dos géneros son los que se recogen en este manual; un manual nacido principalmente de la experiencia, del trabajo diario en la radio. En él aparecen no sólo los trompicones de la propia autora sino todos aquellos que se han podido recoger de otros compañeros de profesión. Eso sí, todas las recomendaciones prácticas se han estructurado con la ayuda de diferentes fuentes bibliográficas sobre la entrevista y el reportaje, de tal manera que se ha conseguido así sistematizar el conocimiento que existe sobre la materia. En este sentido, el manual toma prestado de la teoría aquello que le sirve exclusivamente para organizar el conocimiento que proporcione al lector las técnicas necesarias para realizar una entrevista o un reportaje. Por tanto, no caben en este manual las reflexiones teóricas más allá de las que sean imprescindibles para comprender la esencia de estos dos géneros radiofónicos.

En definitiva, se trata de una obra práctica y fácil de comprender que pretende ayudar a los estudiantes de las facultades de Comunicación o a los profesionales de la radio a enfrentarse por primera vez con una entrevista o con un reportaje. Para ello, el manual facilita un compendio de consejos y técnicas básicas sobre cómo realizar estos dos géneros, al mismo tiempo que advierte de los errores.

El constante reclamo desde varios sectores para iniciar un proceso de renovación de la publicidad radiofónica, caracterizada en nuestro país por la escasa calidad, continúa sin recibir respuesta. La radio se mantiene como soporte publicitario de contenidos pobres, que no tienen en cuenta las características del medio invisible ni se esfuerzan en emplear los recursos que les ofrece. La publicidad en radio, es publicidad, pero no radiofónica. Por ello, en las siguientes páginas se propone una reflexión sobre los problemas detectados en un intento de encontrar posibles soluciones que ayuden a superar el actual estancamiento de la publicidad radiofónica.

Invoking historian, John Durham Peters discussion of the merits of dissemination and dialogue, and critical theorist Bertolt Brecht’s disappointment with “one way” broadcast radio in the 1930s, the author explores podcasting as a new form of broadcast dissemination which draws on radio’s past dreamings of “eros and democracy” (Peters 1999). Seguro que a nadie le sorprende en el día a día escuchar a una estrella de Hollywood hablando un perfecto castellano, catalán o gallego. El doblaje forma ya parte de nuestras vidas gracias a la tradición histórica y a la calidad con la que se lleva a cabo en nuestro país. Sin embargo, a pesar de esta aparente familiaridad, muy pocos conocen qué se esconde tras esta actividad a la que se dedican muchos profesionales: traductores, directores, actores o mezcladores de sonido. Precisamente este libro descubre la labor de cada uno de ellos, describiendo el proceso íntegro del doblaje, desde el momento de recepción de la obra hasta su montaje final. Y lo hace de un modo comprensible, con un estilo ameno, ilustrado por anécdotas y curiosidades contadas por ellos mismos. Se trata, en definitiva, de una obra dirigida tanto a locutores, actores, traductores, como a todos aquellos que quieran conocer más sobre el doblaje y descubrir así un mundo fascinante, que por su propia esencia, prefiere permanecer en la sombra.

La voz es nuestro principal vehículo de comunicación y la herramienta que en mayor proporción se emplea en los medios audiovisuales. Esto es especialmente evidente en radio, el medio por excelencia del sonido, pero también lo es, aunque en menor medida, en la televisión. Por eso, incluso en los manuales más básicos sobre medios audiovisuales se reconoce la importancia el correcto empleo de la voz en la transmisión de los mensajes. Sin embargo, años de escasa formación en este sentido han provocado que la locución actual no sea la más idónea ni la más correcta. Esta es la razón por la que nos proponemos realizar un compendio de recomendaciones y análisis de defectos en torno a la locución informativa, basándonos siempre en diferentes investigaciones empíricas realizadas en estos años.

The quest for a solution to the conflict is an issue of national concern. Nowadays, concerted efforts are being made at individual and group levels to sustain peace. The dominant paradigm adopted in dousing the menace of conflicts in Nigeria has been the use of guns and militarisation. However, this approach has been widely criticised as full of human rights abuse and incapable of restoring lasting peace. Furthermore, evidence has shown that violent extremists have made effective use of the media (directly or indirectly), especially cyberspace, to advance their propagandistic aims and radicalism. This chapter provides an exploratory review on understanding the impacts and prospects of peace media in the context of peacebuilding toward countering violent extremism and sustaining peace through peacebuilding using peace broadcast media in the northeast of Nigeria.

Although Latin American radio's 'radionovelas' once upheld the region's time-honoured tradition of storytelling, television soap operas gradually came to completely assume that function.
Nevertheless, Radio Ambulante, an interesting new project founded by writer Daniel Alarcón and financed through crowdfunding, has begun reintroducing storytelling to Spanish-language radio by means of podcasts that document the voices and real-life situations of Latin American people. This chapter offers an analysis of Radio Ambulante's innovative business model, which is based on revenue sources that range from listener support to foundation grants, and explores whether it might serve as a paradigm for other alternative radio start-ups.

This article offers a cultural historical interpretation of The Third Man: The Lives of Harry Lime (1951-52) an internationally syndicated radio series based on the film The Third Man (1949). It argues that the series’ cultural meanings can only be fully assessed through accounting for the programme’s international framing or encoding, which critics have heretofore overlooked. As an internationally encoded series The Third Man has a high degree of interpretive openness in order to appeal to and resonate with heterogeneous audiences. The article examines the ways in which the series creates interpretive openness through its ambiguous characterization of the protagonist Harry Lime, use of Lime’s American nationality, international settings and how it drew upon the Cold War for dramatic material. The series’ international encoding, interpretive openness and broadcast during the Cold War ground interpreting its cultural meanings. The article claims that the series offers critical perspectives on the Cold War through Lime’s serving as a metonym for the United States, and plots that allegorically and satirically dramatize the Cold War milieu.

En una sociedad influenciada por los medios de comunicación audiovisual y sustentada en la educación formal por la enseñanza del lenguaje escrito y audiovisual, se hace imprescindible recuperar la formación educativa en las estructuras orales. La cultura auditiva ha sido la gran olvidada aún cuando es imprescindible en el desarrollo del lenguaje, como principal instrumento de acceso al conocimiento y relación con el exterior. En este sentido, la radio, como medio estrictamente sonoro y fuente de estimulación de la imaginación, que posibilita la capacitación en la escucha y el aprendizaje del lenguaje oral, se presenta como la fuente propicia para cumplir con estos objetivos formativos.

Einschalten, Sender suchen und die Welt im Ohr haben: Internationales Radio prägte Politik und Alltag im Kalten Krieg. Patricia Jäggi untersucht mit Fokus auf dem Schweizer internationalen Sender die Blütezeit dieses globalen Mediums. Dazu versetzt sie sich in die Rolle von Radiohörer*innen und rekonstruiert mittels eines innovativen methodischen Zugangs damaliges auditives Erleben. Neben Tonarchivalien des Schweizer Senders aus den Jahren 1950 bis 1975, in denen die Alpen genauso journalistisch wie radiophon dargestellt wurden, wird die technische Übermittlung nachgestellt und damit auch die Geräuschwelt des Äthers als Teil des auditiven Erlebenshorizonts untersucht. Das Buch liefert neue Zusammenhänge zwischen Klangwelt, Kulturdiplomatie und Kosmopolitismus.

"Based on the study of Brazilian radio broadcasting and its environment, this paper analyzes the processes that led samba, from being the symbol of the discrimination of mixed-blood populations, to become a national symbol. The paper first describes the cultural prescriptions which, until the 1930s, have disqualified samba. It then looks at the economic role of the carnival in consolidating an “industrial” economic rationality around the samba phenomenon. Finally, it analyzes the trajectories of four radio professionals of the period 1920-1940, in order to outline the strategies used by commercial broadcasting stations to legitimize musical programs dominated by samba, as well as the processes that have valorized samba as a legacy and an esthetic “genre.”

À la fin des années 1910, les rythmes qui feront de la samba un genre musical étaient encore refoulés à l’arrière-cour des maisons du centre populaire de Rio de Janeiro. Ils n’ont pu accéder aux espaces “nobles” de ces mêmes maisons ou des autres espaces de manifestation de la musique légère (casinos, cinémas pour la performance, salons de l’aristocratie et de la bourgeoisie urbaine pour le disque et les émissions de radio) qu’après un détour par la transgression sociale de la bohème et du carnaval, puis par la médiation cardinale des maisons de disques et surtout des stations de radio. La production massive du goût pour une musique populaire qui se revendique comme métissée correspond également à la stabilisation de pratiques musicales nouvelles dans un espace public et domestique en profonde mutation. L’article s’attache à restituer ces modes de production et de réception, en partie mis en place à l’insu des prescripteurs culturels habituellement considérés par la sociologie (intellectuels, critiques, politiques publiques, etc.)."

A partir de la actividad radiofónica brasileña y su entorno, el autor del presente artículo analiza los procesos que hicieron posible que la samba se convirtiese en un emblema nacional, pese a que en un comienzo era símbolo de estigmatización de la población mestizada. Tras haber explicitado los horizontes de expectativas de quienes dictaban los preceptos culturales, que hasta el decenio de 1930 habían descalificado la samba, el autor se interesa por la función económica del carnaval, que consolida una racionalidad económica «industrial» en torno a la samba. Después aborda las estrategias de las que se valieron las radios comerciales para legitimar una programación musical en que predominaba la samba, así como los procesos que la valorizaron como patrimonio y género «esteta». Lo hace a través de las trayectorias de cuatro profesionales de la radio del período comprendido entre 1920 y 1940.

Dieser Aufsatz untersucht anhand von brasilianischen Radiosendungen den Prozess, wie Samba von einem stigmatisierten Kennzeichen der Mestizenbevölkerung zu einem nationalen Wahrzeichen wurde. Nach der Beschreibung der Erwartungshorizonte der wichtigsten Kulturvertreter, die bis in die 1930er Jahre den Samba disqualifizierten, wenden wir uns der wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung des Karnevals zu und seiner Rolle für die Konsolidierung einer wirtschaftlich „industriellen“ Rationalität des Samba. Danach zeigen wir anhand der Laufbahn von vier Radioprofis aus den Jahren 1920-1940, mit welchen Strategien die kommerziellen Radiosender eine vom Samba dominierte Programmgestaltung rechtfertigten, und wie der Samba als nationales Erbe und ästhetisches Genre aufgewertet wurde.

La crisis de los modelos tradicionales de financiación, el nuevo
rol de las audiencias y el desarrollo de las redes digitales han
transformado la producción, la distribución y el consumo de
productos culturales, incluyendo los contenidos sonoros y
radiofónicos.
A partir de un cambio en el modelo tradicional de riesgo e
inversión, el crowdfunding introduce al oyente en la circulación y la financiación de diferentes proyectos. De esta manera, este trabajo analiza la viabilidad y la sostenibilidad de esta forma de financiación centrando su atención en  diferentes proyectos desarrollados en España alrededor de los contenidos radiofónicos.

O objetivo desta investigação é discutir, por meio de uma estruturação conceitual de cunho bibliográfico, como o audiodocumentário – formato radiofônico que entrecruza técnicas do jornalismo e da arte sonora – apresenta-se frente a um público receptivo às produções em podcasting e da escuta via streaming. Entendemos o formato a partir da concepção de um rádio independente e de caráter social. Primeiro, por meio do seu processo de produção (enquanto ação planejada – individual ou coletiva – para a articulação de movimentos comunitários de conscientização social). Posteriormente, por intermédio do produto consolidado e publicado via podcasting (enquanto instrumento para disseminação de conteúdo informativo, livre e contra-hegemônico em favor da liberdade de expressão).

This  study examines  the  effect  of  media  multitasking  on the recall and evaluation of  radio commercials  that differ  in congruence   with  the Internet task. Two experiment showed  that  congruent  radio  commercials  were  more  positively evaluated  and  better  recalled  than  incongruent ones.  Results of the experiments differ however in their main effect of task. The first experiment confirmed the negative impact due to limited capacity, but the second experiment disconfirmed this impact and showed that the effect was due to mere exposure. In conclusion, radio offers a persuasive background noise, but only when congruent with the Internet task at hand.

May community radio be a therapy for patients who suffer from mental diseases? Can radio be a useful tool both for recovering the selves of the patients and for the ‘normal’ people outside the hospitals, helping to communicate less stereotyped images of the mental illness? This article will try to answer these questions, analysing two different case histories, the ones of Radio la Colifata of Buenos Aires – the first radio station to be totally conducted by patients – and of Radio Rete 180 of Mantova, Italy, the last born of this genre. The article is the result of ethnographic research conducted in Buenos Aires and in Mantova through the methods of participant observation of the live radio sessions and in-depth interviews with the patients. The experience I had studying these ‘crazy radio’ stations led me to the belief that community radio practice further enhances the feeling of being at home with ourselves and with others and can effectively work as a tool of social connection and participation, not only in the case of mentally ill patients as it will be shown here, but also in other cases of ‘Otherness’ (i.e. asylum seekers, migrants, prison inmates, etc.).

The growth of information and communication technologies (ICTs) raises a series of questions for international development. This paper explores that relationships between ICTs and various types of social formations (NGOs, community groups, Unions).

This raises the issue of "how do you evaluate the benefits of information?" and "what is information" since the ICTs are implicated with these groups in different ways in each case. This question of "what is information?" went on to inform my subsequent work, which is why I include this early dissertation here.

En este texto se exponen los resultados parciales de una investigación realizada sobre los usos de la radio como instrumento de rehabilitación y recuperación de personas diagnosticadas con trastorno mental severo y crónico en entornos comunitarios. El ámbito geográfico del estudio es la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid en la que se han analizado un total de veinte programas de radio producidos por personas con trastorno mental severo y crónico.
Estos programas se difunden a través de la antena de emisoras comunitarias, de sus páginas webs y de otras vías de difusión por Internet.
Nuestro análisis ha combinado diversas metodologías de carácter cualitativo como la observación directa, la escucha de los programas y la realización de entrevistas en profundidad con terapeutas y pacientes, con el objetivo de determinar los factores más importantes que determinan el éxito terapéutico
de estas experiencias.
Una de las conclusiones que se constatan es que existe una gran heterogeneidad pudiendo identificarse diferentes modelos de aplicación. Existen proyectos radiofónicos vinculados a programas públicos de salud mental,
mientras otros son impulsados por asociaciones u instituciones de carácter privado. El papel que desempeñan las personas que padecen los trastornos así como el de sus coordinadores-terapeutas en el proceso de producción y
difusión de los programas también registra diferencias significativas en los casos de estudio.

One of the fundamental elements to construct a radio fiction product from the point of view of the sound is the denominated point of listening or ‘point icí’ of Souriau. The point of listening represents the space relation existing between the listener and the rest of the sound objects of the scene. Its importance is then in which it determines the place from which the sound perspective settles, forming the space and expressive meaning. For all these reasons, it is decisive in the perception process that the listener makes of a radio product. In spite of this, years of experience in the realization of fiction products on radio demonstrate that the suitable location of the point of listening is one of the most complicated aspects: the eternal problem. Therefore, the preoccupation by this aspect has taken to us to analyze 30 fiction stories on radio with the objective of finding the main problems of location of the point of listening and establishing a catalogue of errors that helps in the education of the radio production. The results indicate that 25 of 30 stories contain some error in the positioning of the point of listening.

Since the Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to power in 2002, the greater visibility of religion and the emergence of a conservative middle class have reconfigured the boundaries of what is thinkable and sayable in Turkey, particularly in the media. Despite its importance to media consumers, academic analysts have marginalized radio compared with television and the press. Yet increasing commercialization and local concentration have affected mainstream music radio and reshaped religious broadcasting. This article focuses on local radio in the periphery. How does the radio landscape in Central Anatolia, a region reflecting the conservative bourgeoisie’s new dominance, mirror and link to the dominance of the AKP? Fieldwork conducted in Konya, one of the Anatolian ‘Tigers’ and a centre of AKP support, provides the empirical data for this case study.

El estudio de la investigación actual en radio, y sonido en general, presenta un déficit de trabajos publicados. En este artículo se rastrean los últimos avances investigadores y los focos de atención en esta materia en aportaciones cien-tíficas y tesis doctorales publicadas y defendidas desde 2015 hasta la actualidad. Se observa un aumento constante, desde el punto de vista cuantitativo, además de la incorporación de nuevos temas de interés relacionados con las nuevas tecnologías y los nuevos modelos de consumo y negocio, sobre una muestra de investigaciones españolas o en español en revistas de América Latina, referentes académicos por su posición en índices de calidad científica en el ámbito de la comunicación. Radio’s capacity to stimulate the creation of mental images in the mind of its listeners has long been acknowledged. Nevertheless, research into mental imagery has focused principally on the study of visual stimuli, although studies into radio itself have mostly concerned the field of advertising. In this study, we examine the influence of two stimuli associated with auditory processing on radio: sound effects and sound shots. The chosen context for the study is that of a fictional story, or audio drama, through which to measure the role of these stimuli both in creating mental images in the listener’s mind and in maintaining his or her attention. Our findings demonstrate that the inclusion of descriptive sound effects and especially of sound shots in a fictional radio drama increases mental imagery and that a relationship exists between this increase and the degree of listener attention.

Journalists and the media have not only played a role as political actors in Anglo-German relations, which was independent of their governments. Likewise, they have also worked in the service of their states, surrendering more or less consciously their journalistic independence for the ‘national interest’. One such example is the British propaganda campaign directed at the German public during 1938-1939 with the help of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The campaign is an interesting historical case that shows the enormous influence a government could exert on the media even in a democratic society. This article examines the relationship between the journalists of the BBC German Service and the Foreign Office and offers an insight into the mechanisms of British propaganda production between the Munich Agreement and the outbreak of the Second World War.

"INTRODUCTION
The news broadcast is a highly familiar institutional event in which the latest ‘news’ is presented through routine discursive structures that provide a newsworthy framework for events to be reported into (Clayman and Heritage, 2002). However, as has been emphasised
by many authors, news is not only concerned with reporting ‘events’. Rather, media organisations are in the business of news production. ‘They construct it, they construct facts, they construct statements and they construct context in which these facts make sense. They
construct “a” reality’ (Vasterman, 1995, quoted in Harcup and O’Neill, 2001 : 265 ; see also Tuchman, 1978). Or, as Schudson puts it : ‘To ask “Is this news ?” is not to ask only “Did it just happen ?” It is to ask “Does this mean something ?”’ (Schudson, 1987 : 84). Thus,
while ‘breaking’ news, i.e. reporting on unanticipated major events, may still be the top priority among newsmakers, the work of new journalists has been likened to the work on the assembly line with
news being searched for, gathered, selected, and eventually turned into stories in a routinized process of news-making (e.g. Gans, 1980 ; Cook, 1998).

Reporting and presenting stories gathered by a programme, however, creates a possible site of tension where usual editorial values may be passed over in favour of carrying a story the programme has
sourced through its own investigative journalism. We explore this blurring by focusing upon the discursive placement of news and the creation of a news agenda through an examination of two examples taken from the BBC Radio 4 Today programme. Using the ethnomethodological approach of membership category analysis, we suggest that the presenters are seen to engage in complex categorial work in the process of creating a topical context for an issue to appear in the news programme as well as the subsequent development of the issue as a relevant news agenda during the programme."

پاول فلیکس لازارسفلد: بنیانگذار رادیو پژوهی" یكی از چهره‌های مهم و كلیدی تحقیقات ارتباطی به‌شمار می‌رود؛ كه در سال 1901 در "وین" اتریش متولد شد. پدرش یك مشاور حقوقی ناموفق و فقیر و مادرش یك روان‌كاو فاقد آموزش دانشگاهی بود. از این‌رو هرگز به‌سوی شغل پدر متمایل نشد. لازارسفلد، در یك خانواده سیاسی آگاه، تربیت و پرورش یافت. محیط خانوادگی لازارسفلد، بستری مناسب برای طرح سیاست‌های سوسیالیستی آن زمان، به‌ویژه نشر "افكار فرویدی" بود. او در دوران جوانی، به‌عنوان یك سوسیالیست جوان و فعّال سیاسی، بسیار شهره بود و رهبر فكری دانش‌آموزان سوسیالیست دبیرستان‌های وین محسوب می‌شد.
لازارسفلد در اثر آشنایی با "فردریش آدلر" رهبر سیاسی و تروریست مشهور نخست‌وزیر اتریش، "كاونت كارل اشتورك" به "علم ریاضیات" علاقمند شد و مدّتی هم زندان سیاسی را تجربه كرد. در آن زمان، آدلر ریاضی‌دان و فیزیك‌دان برجسته و صاحب‌نامی به‌شمار می‌آمد. در اثر آشنایی با پرفسور "كارل بوهلر" و "شارلوت بوهلر" موفق شد، در سال 1923 در وین بخش روان‌شناسی را تأسیس كند و مدّتی هم در آن، به تدریس واحدهای درسی "روش‌های آماری"، "روان‌شناسی اجتماعی" و "روان‌شناسی كاربردی" بپردازد. لازارسفلد، درجه دكترای تخصصی خود را در رشته‌ی "ریاضیات كاربردی" از دانشگاه وین أخذ كرد. در سال 1925، رساله دكترای خویش را با عنوان "نظریه گرانشی اینشتین" برای توصیف حركت "سیاره‌ی مركوری" به‌رشته‌ی تحریر درآورده و از آن دفاع نمود. در پایان سال 1925، برای رهایی از مشكلات مالی و شخصی، مؤسسه ی روان‌شناسی اقتصاد فورشانگستل را در وین پایه‌گذاری كرد. این مؤسسه، بعدها برای پیشرفت و توسعه هرم جامعه‌شناسی و علم ارتباطات در آمریكا، بسیار مفید افتاد. در زمانی كه "مؤسسه فورشانگستل" به فعالیت حرفه‌ای روی آورده بود، اعضای مكتب فرانكفورت، مثل "تئودور آدورنو" و "ماكس هوركهایمر"، با او همكاری می‌كردند. در بین سال‌های 1931 تا 1932، مجری و هدایت‌كننده‌ی مطالعات جامعه‌شناختی "مارینت هال" در باب معضل "بیكاری" شد و این اقدام موجب گردید، كه در سال 1935، از طریق حمایت مالی و بورسیه‌ی پژوهشی "بنیاد راكفلر"، به آمریكا مهاجرت كند.
لازارسفلد در سال 1936 به ایالات متحده رفت و همین مؤسسه را با اندكی تغییر در دانشگاه نیوآرك  به‌راه انداخت. در سال 1937 "دفتر رادیو پژوهی" را در دانشگاه پرینستون فراهم ساخت و در سال 1939 این دفتر، به‌طور رسمی در دانشگاه كلمبیا بنیان‌گذاری شد. هدف اصلی این دفتر، كه سرانجام به "اداره پژوهش اجتماعی–كاربردی" تبدیل شد، تحقیق در خصوص رادیو و تأثیرهای كوتاه‌مدت و بلندمدت آن بر مخاطبان بود؛ كه یكی از نخستین تحقیقات رسانه‌ای جهان آن‌روز به‌شمار می‌رفت.
لازارسفلد در سال 1941 دانشیار بخش جامعه‌شناسی دانشگاه كلمبیا شد و با "رابرت كینگ مرتون" جامعه‌شناس و استادیار همان دانشگاه،‌ شروع به همكاری كرد. او با مدیریت اجرایی موفقیّت‌آمیزش، موجب شد كه در سال 1944 دفتر رادیو پژوهشی به "اداره‌ی پژوهش اجتماعی كاربردی" تغییر نام دهد. او در سال 1948، به‌ریاست بخش جامعه‌شناسی دانشگاه كلمبیا منصوب شد. در سال 1950 از حوزه‌ی ارتباط‌پژوهی كناره‌گیری كرده و به‌ریاست و مدیریت اداره‌ی پژوهش اجتماعی-كاربردی كلمبیا ادامه داد. در سال 1962 "آدولف كتله" آماردان بلژیكی و استاد علوم اجتماعی، در دانشگاه كلمبیا را استخدام كرده و تجربه‌های كمّی او را به‌كار گرفت و رویكردهای علمی او را در تفسیر نتایج پژوهش‌های علمی به‌كار برد. در خلال سال‌های 1974-1969 از دانشگاه كلمبیا بازنشسته شده و شروع به سفرهای هفتگی به "دانشگاه پیترزبورگ" جهت تدریس متون كلاسیك و نظری جامعه‌شناسی کرد. سرانجام، لازارسفلد در سی‌ام آگوست سال 1976 در شهر نیویورك، بر اثر بیماری سرطان درگذشت

Abstract: As part of a PhD thesis on ethnic minority radio and identity in the UK, this paper presents an analysis and discussion of the interactions between a station, the DJs and their communities to bring off truly social events. Ethnic minority radio stations have, in particular, developed complex and lively ways to make radio a truly participatory experience.

The paper explores how DJs utilise text message, social networking, answered and unanswered calls, transcribed messages and on-air performance to enable participation. These resources come to life through sophisticated, unspoken rules mutually created between listener and DJ incorporating shared cultural competences cloaked to casual listeners.

Drawing on an analysis of six case study stations the paper takes a qualitative approach utilising interview, observation and programme analysis.  Giddens’ theory of Structuration (1984) is employed alongside Scannell (1996) and Moore’s (2005) work on radio with Karner’s structures of ethnicity (2007) to address the two main aspects of the paper:
1. An examination of the participatory nature of these programmes through the technologies and rules developed by the DJs and listeners.
2. An exploration of the impact these interactions have for the community and its station.

The analysis demonstrates, however meagre a station’s technological resources are, it is the nature and use of the shared contextual rules that enliven the programmes. These daily or unique programme events become stages for a shared identity voiced through interactions that intertwine, mutually reproducing and changing both the station and community structures through the medium of radio.

Categorisation, narrative and devolution in Wales

ABSTRACT

Within this chapter we examine the use of extended story turns, within the accomplished context of a radio news debate, that display various accounts of national identity in relation to a proposal for devolved democratic institutions within the United Kingdom. In this sense, they display a ‘world view’. These various positions are displayed through the use of various categories, inferences and connections in order to lend support to and promote positions of For and Against the proposal of the establishment of a devolved democratic assembly for Wales. In this sense the topics of national identity and political re-organisation are omni-relevant topics (Sacks 1992). However, our particular focus and interest is upon the various detailed ways such positions routinely rely on methods of categorisation and moral assessment in their construction, configuration and promotion of arguments. Furthermore, the analysis of such category work contributes to our understanding of the moral organisation of Welsh identity in relation to devolved forms of political organisation and representation.

"Abstract

Radio phone-in programmes have been the subject of a number of studies using the methodology of conversation analysis. Whilst this has been successful in making apparent the sequential organisation of this type of interaction little has been said about its categorial organisation. Adopting an ethnomethodological approach, it is demonstrated in this paper that interaction on public access radio can be seen to rely upon categorial and sequential identities built up and developed upon over the course of interaction. By paying attention to the categorial features within media interaction together with the sequential organisation it is possible to examine the way identities are reflexively developed in conjunction with the sequential flow of interaction. This in turn allows an analysis able to address the multi-layered organisational methods used by members as part of the on-going flow of interaction."
