The successful elderly seems to be one of the main concepts in gerontology. The elderly is a biological process experienced by all living beings, including humans. The quality of life may affect the elderly's health. Accordingly, the current study was to determine the effectiveness of self-healing training on the quality of life among the elderly in 2020. The method of the present study was quasi-experimental with pretest-posttest and follow-up design with a control group. The statistical population included all women living in a nursing homes in Isfahan, Iran, among whom 40 were selected using convenience sampling and according to the inclusion criteria, by a public call in the mentioned boarding nursing homes, and assigned randomely into two groups (20 members each). The measure applied in the present study was Ware and Sherbourne's quality of life questionnaire. Latifi and Marvi's self-healing training was performed for the experimental group during twelve 60-minute sessions. Data were analyzed by univariate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) by using SPSS-24 software. The results demonstrated that self-healing training had positive effects on the components of quality of life (including physical function, role limitation due to physical reasons, energy and vitality, emotional well-being, physical pain and general health) in the experimental group compared to the control group significantly in the post-test (p<0.05) and these effects had remained significantly constant in the follow-up phase (p<0.05). However, there was found no significant difference in the other components of quality of life (including limitation of role playing due to emotional reasons and social functioning), both in the posttest and follow-up stages (p>0.05). According to the results of the present study, it can be mentioned that the self-healing approach improves the quality of life and increases the elderly's general health by reducing the physiological stress through methods of treating destructive cellular memories, improving lifestyle and teaching relaxation techniques.

Network-on-Chip (NoC) is used as the communication network in many applications that use multiple cores or Processing Elements (PEs). Routers play a crucial role as connectors since a faulty router can degrade the NoC's performance and cause miscommunication between the network's components. Thus a faulty router may cause the system to fail. To avoid failure in routers in NoCs, a novel self-healing technique is proposed. Self-healing serves to recover hardware faults, and it is defined as the ability of a system to recover from its faults without any external intervention. The proposed self-healing method is to heal faulty routers and their port buffers of faults as they occur. The proposed method uses the neighboring routers of a faulty router for computation. The data packet includes three bits for routing. A neighbor's active router updates these bits according to the destination of the packet. A self-healing block is added inside each router. The proposed method also covers faulty buffers, and it uses active buffers to store the packet of a faulty one. It has been implemented and tested using VHDL and Altera Arria 10 GX FPGA. It has been found to attain improved reliability and Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) at an area overhead of 27%. It has been tested for complex NoC structure, and the results show it is practical, scalable, stable, and robust. This document summarizes the results of the Working Group 1 - Self-
Healing and Recovery - within the Dagstuhl Seminar 09201 Self-Healing and Self-Adaptive Systems (organized by A. Andrzejak, K. Geihs, O.  Shehory and J. Wilkes). The seminar was held from May 10th 2009 to May 15th 2009 in Schloss Dagstuhl Leibniz Center for Informatics.

The aim of this study is analyzing the self-healing capability of high strength concrete (M70) with nano silica and crystalline admixture in three types of environmental exposures i.e. water immersion, wet/dry cycles and water contact. The percentage replacements of cement with nano silica were 1%, 2%, 3% with addition of 1.1% crystalline admixture. The specimens were pre-cracked at 28 days in the range of 0.10-0.40mm and the time set for healing was 42 days. The result shows that all the mixes have considerable amount of closing ability and strength regaining capacity for all exposure conditions. The concrete with 2% nano silica and 1.1% crystalline admixture (CA) has complete crack closing ability and strength regaining capacity for water immersion and wet/dry cycle conditions.

A series of poly(urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) microcapsules filled with dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) was successfully prepared by in situ polymerization. The effect of diverse process parameters and ingredients on the morphology of the microcapsules was observed by SEM, optical microscopy (OM) and digital microscopy. Different techniques for the characterization of the chemical structure and the core content were considered such as FT-IR and (1)H-NMR as well as the characterization of thermal properties by DSC. High yields of free flowing powder of spherical microcapsules were produced. The synthesized microcapsules can be incorporated into another polymeric host material. In the event the host material cracks due to excessive stress or strong impact, the microcapsules would rupture to release the DCPD, which could polymerize to repair the crack.

Neural Network is used in many applications and guarding its performance against faults is a research challenge. Self-healing neural network is a promising concept for achieving reliability, which is the ability to detect and fix a fault in the system automatically. Most of the current self-healing neural network are based on replication of hardware nodes which causes significant area overhead. The proposed self-healing approach results in a modest area overhead and it is suitable for complex neural network. The proposed method is based on a shared operation and a spare node in each layer which compensates for any faulty node in the layer. Each faulty node will be compensated by its neighbor node, and the neighbor node performs the faulty node as well as its own operations sequentially. In the case the neighbor is faulty, the spare node will compensate for it. The proposed method is implemented using VHDL and the simulation results are obtained using Altira 10 GX FPGA for a different number of nodes. The area overhead is very small for a complex network. The reliability of the proposed method is studied and compared with the traditional neural network.

The starting question for our  fieldwork research and subsequent analysis was: Why could one not just dance alone at home and achieve the same psychological benefits? What is it about this practice and the shared experience amongst strangers that facilitates healing? We have taken an auto-ethnographic approach which foregrounds our own emotional and physical experiences in the field. As such, we are our own primary sources for the material presented in this text. We attended a dance class which had a strong therapeutic element and so the idea of standing off to one side and merely observing would not have been appropriate even if we had wanted to. Due to the emphasis on physical engagement and the intense personal experiences we were having whilst dancing we would describe our approach as “observant participation”, rather than participant observation (Wacquant 2003). Through this we found that other dancers became a focal point that helped to keep our minds in the present and away from ‘meta-thoughts’. Based upon our research and experience with 5Rhythms meditation this essay puts forward the argument that as social beings, because of the need to witness and be witnessed, self-knowledge and self-healing are better achieved through the presence of others. Those who come to 5Rhythms use movement and dance to achieve exactly that.

Self-healing is increasingly becoming a promising approach to designing reliable digital systems, and it refers to the ability of a system to detect faults or failures and fix them through healing or repairing. Digital systems with architecture for self-healing are expected to compensate faults. However, there are a few research challenges that need to be overcome before self-healing becomes a mainstream approach. For example, current self-healing techniques face challenges such as scalability, reliability, area overhead, and mapping. This paper explains the self-healing concept and investigates the self-healing approaches related to digital design in the literature. It gives a general overview of the topic and explains levels of abstraction at which self-healing can be used: hardware level, application level, and system level. The paper presents multiple related works at each level of abstraction. In the faulted phase, different types of faults and fault detection methods are described. For the evaluation of a self-healing technique, this paper presents the parameters which can be used to evaluate a self-healing method. These parameters are redundancy rate, the maximum ratio of repair, self-healing time consumption, reliability, and area overhead. The paper also presents a comparison between previous works of self-healing in terms of evaluation techniques. Implementations using VHDL and ISE Xilinx Vertex-5 for self-healing on Embryonic Hardware (EmHW) and Network-on-Chip (NoC) are also presented. The simulation results show the contribution of self-healing to improve system reliability and mean time to failure.

The purpose of this study was to develop a new technological meditative tool, called the virtual reality meditative technique (VRMT) and test its feasibility for further large-scale studies. This VRMT was designed by the 7D Health research team based on principles of mind-body medicine, mental imagery, meditation, and other mystical states of consciousness to promote health-producing effects and optimal well-being. A sacred Hindu virtual reality (VR) environment was created for Hindu participants. EEG equipment was used to detect brainwave changes throughout the virtual reality experience, and self-report measures were administered to gather qualitative data. Although the sample size for this pilot study was too small for statistical data analysis, there were some observed brainwave changes, which suggest that some of the participants were experiencing shifts of consciousness. Additionally, the self-report data revealed that several participants felt calm, peaceful, and compassionate, with some experiencing improved moods. These results demonstrate the need for a further large-scale study to explore the wide range of health possibilities that this new technique could offer as a meditative aid. This VRMT intervention could have potentially therapeutic implications for complementary medicine, improving a person's well-being, as well as for enhancing one's creativity, training compassion, developing a high performance mind, and quickly experiencing higher states of mystical consciousness. Recently, the use of bacteria or enzyme as a self-healing method in geotechnical and construction engineering applications has become popular to be alternative to the conventional chemical methods. The main phenomenon behind the method is the precipitation of calcium-carbonate / calcite (microbial CaCO3) using proper bacteria as microbially inducement technique in construction materials (soil, concrete, rock, limestone etc.) so that to obtain binds in between particles or similarly fill in the cracks & gaps / voids naturally helping the increase in strength eventually. Self-healing method seems to be an innovative remarkable new reinforcement technique and a successful and feasible method for improving; the strength of organic soils, shear stiffness and the shear capacity of cracks in rock masses & concrete. Naturally it is obvious to be easily foreseen that the healing effect is a time dependent matter. As a known engineering issue; concrete has a high tendency to form cracks under loading conditions in practice. However, concrete is a most world-wide used construction material. Comparing to the treatment of chemicals and polymers, microbial self-healing approach is safer for both health and environmental risks. Furthermore, as conventional (chemicals and polymers) applications are effective only in the short terms, the application of self-healing method using bacteria (which has efficient bonding capacity and compatibility with concrete compositions) has a long-lasting effect. For treatments of crack repair, microbial self-healing method has a rapid and active effect of repairment, particularly in filling deep micro-cracks and preventing potential crack developments. As the bio self-healing method seems to be more costly in the short term (when comparing to the conventional methods), it is promising to be more than offset in the longer term. As an innovative solution to the problematic weak (fine, sand, organic) soils, microbial method provides a positive effect on improving strength and compressibility properties. In this paper, an assessment and review of the literature is focused on and discussed.

Hardware failures are undesired but a common problem in circuits. Such failures are inherently due to the aging of circuitry or variation in circumstances. In critical systems, customers demand the system never to fail. Several self-healing and fault tolerance techniques have been proposed in the literature for recovering a circuitry from a fault. Such techniques come to the rescue when a fault has already occurred but they are typically uninformed about the possibility of an impending failure (i.e., fault prediction), which can be used as a pre-stage to fault tolerance and self-healing. This paper presents an approach to early fault prediction of circuits. The proposed method uses Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to get the fault frequency signature, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to get the most important data with reduced dimension, and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to learn and classify the fault. The proposed method is validated for working in different circuits by testing it using two circuits: comparator and amplifier. The comparator and amplifier are implemented using 45 nm technology on HSPICE to extract the failures dataset in terms of voltage, current, temperature, noise, and delay. This extracted data is used for training the proposed approach using Tensorflow. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work of fault prediction at the transistor level for hardware system. The proposed approach considers aging, short-circuit, and open-circuit faults, and it provides a fault prediction accuracy of 98.93% and 98.91% for comparator and amplifier circuits, respectively. The proposed method is tested for two different circuits for its validation, and it consumes 1.08 W for Altera Arria 10 GX FPGA device.

Self-healing concrete is a product that will chemically produce hydrates to heal the cracks that appear on the surface of concrete structures. In self-healing process healing agent absorbs the moisture content present in atmosphere to heal. This process enhanced mechanical properties of concrete. Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are materials that have the ability to absorb and retain large volumes of water and aqueous solutions. SAP is now a mature product that has quickly progressed from specialty chemical to special commodity. Sodium silicate is used as SAP chemical admixtures as well as self-healing agent for concrete. Sodium silicate in liquid form at 2% is mixed with concrete based on previous work. As per IS 10262 : 2009, M40 grade concrete mix design is derived for both control and SAP concrete and specimens are prepared for compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength. At age of 7, 14, and 28 and 56 days, tests are conducted to determine the compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths. The specimen are also pre-cracked on 28 th day and re-cured for 28 days to undergo rapid self-healing process. On 56 th day, they are tested for determining the recovery of strengths. The effect of 2% sodium silicate on the strength and the healing property of concrete is studied by determining the self-healing efficiency.

The formation and healing of cracks in fiber-reinforced composites made of a thermally remendable polymeric matrix were studied. A new thermally remendable polymer, using furan and maleimide moieties based on the Diels-Alder reaction was synthesized and employed for the fabrication of fiber-reinforced composites. To find the healing efficiency of composites, three-point bending specimens with the stacking sequence of [90 3 /0/90 3 ] were prepared. The specimens were initially subjected to tensile loading until reaching the characteristic damage state. Then, the flexural modulus and strength after the healing up to different conversion degrees were obtained and compared with the virgin specimens. The results revealed over 95% recovery of the flexural strength and modulus after the complete healing. In addition, the effect of multiple healing on the healing efficiency was investigated and it was observed that the percentage of recovery would remain constant in the absence of fiber breakage. Using the shear-lag analysis and the classical lamination theory, a novel model was developed to simulate the residual flexural modulus of the damaged specimens as a function of the crack density. Moreover, the proposed model was extended to predict the recovered flexural stiffness after the healing of the specimens. A comparison of the results of the model and experiments validated the capability of the proposed model.

In this paper, the effect of the cross-links conversion degree on the healing efficiency of a thermally remendable polymer based on the Diels-Alder (DA) reaction was studied quantitatively. Using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results along with the Kissinger method, the conversion degree of the thermally reversible cross-links was predicted as a function of time and temperature. For investigating the healing efficiencies at different conversion degrees, three-point bending specimens were fabricated under certain curing conditions, which guaranteed the formation of both reversible and irreversible bonds. Afterward, specimens failed under three-point bending test and healed up to certain conversion degrees. The results revealed on average 15%, 38% and 83% recovery of flexural strength, and 89%, 91% and 93% recovery of flexural modulus at conversion degrees of 0.6, 0.8 and 1, respectively. Moreover, by repeating the damaging and healing procedure, it was shown that the synthesized polymer has the capability to be healed for several times.

In the past few decades, the use of glass in buildings has remarkably increased. As a result, several transparent buildings have been constructed, in which the materials have almost disappeared. Given that the advancement of architecture is inextricably linked to the acquisition of general knowledge on future developments, this study was conducted to predict the paths of development that glass structures are likely to take in the future. Investigations such as this increase the possibility of advancing both design and construction at the same speed as technology. To achieve this goal, this study evaluates the present situation by investigating new possibilities and assessing their effect on the development of glass buildings. The findings of this study show that the durability, safety, appearance, and efficiency of transparent buildings can be improved through continuous refinement of designs, replacement of aged elements, prompt repair of damaged protective coatings, and greater exploitation of double-sided screens.

—In this paper, self-healing concept for hardware systems is investigated and a new approach is proposed. Hardware systems have been proposing imitations to biological organisms in the way they offer healing and recovery abilities. Digital systems with inspired homogeneous architecture have improved capabilities to compensate for any faults. Self-healing is defined by the ability of a system to detect faults or failures and fix them. One of the main problems in current self-healing approaches is area overhead and scalability for complex structures considering they are based on redundancy and spare blocks. This paper proposes a different approach for self-healing based on embryonic structures without a need for spare cells. The area overhead is lower compared to other approaches relying on spare cells. The proposed approach relies on time multiplexing two functions in one cell within one clock cycle. The reliability of the proposed technique is studied and compared to conventional system with different failure rates. This approach is capable of healing up to 50% of the cells where each cell can cover another neighbor failed cell at most. The area overhead is 9% for the proposed approach which is much lower compared to other approaches using spare cell. The proposed approach is applied to investigate two case studies; ALU array, and neural network.

Earlier software systems used to be very small in size and were developed and maintained by only few IT experts, but era changed and the requirements of user's started increasing day by day. Due to heterogeneous and dynamic behaviour of current software systems their structure is becoming complex which leads to rapid rise in their cost and complexity, now more IT professionals are required to develop, design and maintain them. If the complexity keeps on increasing in this manner then one day software systems would be unmanageable, very costly, low maintainable, and least reliable. Like biological systems software systems must be designed which will be once developed and deployed to users then these systems will be able adapt and change accordingly according to user's requirements. Abstract
Asclepius was one of the most popular healing deities in Graeco-Roman antiquity. Patients suffering from various diseases resorted to his sanctuaries, the so-called asclepieia, looking for cure. Many inscriptions preserve stories of supplicants who slept in the abaton of the temples and claimed that they had been healed or received remedies from the god. The historical study may take into consideration modern (neuro)cognitive research on the placebo effects in order to examine the possibilities of actual healing experiences at the asclepeiea. In this paper, I take into account the theoretical premises of the placebo drama theory suggested by Ted Kaptchuk in order to explore the specific factors, including the personality of Asclepius, his patients’ mindsets, the relationship between them, the nature of the supplicants’ impairments, the employed or prescribed treatments and the ritual settings of the cult, which could have mediated health recovery, and contributed to the phenomenal success of the Asclepian therapies via the activation of patients’ placebo responses.

Self-healing approaches in cementitious materials are enhancing day by day. Microencapsulation of a healing agent is one of the most promising self-healing methods. In the event of any crack occurrence, the microcapsule breaks and the healing agent release into the crack. The sodium silicate, which has many advantages as a self-healing agent in cementitious materials, can be encapsulated via the interfacial polymerization of shell-forming monomer on the aqueous sodium silicate droplets. In previous study, aqueous sodium silicate (SS) micro droplets dispersed in toluene and coated with different amount of shell-forming monomer by using interfacial polymerization method. In this study, the healing agent was optimized by changing the SS and water portions. SEM and microencapsulation efficiency (yield) analyses showed that 50% is the optimum SS and water ratio.

A hybrid epoxy resin with intrinsic self healing properties has been prepared from a bifunctional Diels-Alder (DA) adduct. This paper proposes fast fault detection, isolation, and restoration (F-FDIR) for microgrid application with the IEC 61850 Generic Object Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE) communication considering the communication/system failure. GOOSE provides a mechanism for lightweight low latency peer-to-peer data exchange between devices, which reduces the restoration time compared to conventional client-server communication paradigm. The proposed mitigation method for the communication/system failure can find an available restoration scenario and reduce the overall process time. Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testbed is designed and implemented with real time digital simulator, microgrid control system, and protection and control intelligent electric devices (IEDs) for the validation. The experimental results show that the proposed F-FDIR and IEC 61850 models can enhance the reliability and interoperability of the microgrid operation and enable self-healing microgrids.

The self-healing mechanism of radiation-induced defects in nickelegraphene nanocomposite is investigated by atomistic simulations. Compared with pure nickel, nickelegraphene nanocomposite has less defects remained in the bulk region after collision cascades, illustrating self-healing performance. Nickel egraphene interfaces (NGIs) serve as sinks for radiation-induced defects and preferentially trap in-terstitials over vacancies. Energetic and kinetic calculations reveal that the defect formation energy and diffusion barrier are reduced in the vicinity of NGIs, and the reduction are pronounced for interstitials. When NGIs are loaded with interstitials, their segregation ability on radiation-induced defects improves significantly, and the radiation-induced defects near the NGIs diffuse more easily. Especially, the vacancies (or interstitials) near the NGIs tend to annihilate (or aggregate) with the interstitials trapped at the NGIs, which only happens at the interstitial-loaded side of NGIs. Therefore, nickelegraphene nanocomposite exhibits excellent radiation tolerance and shows promise as a structural material for advanced nuclear reactors due to its NGIs with the energetic and kinetic driving forces acting on radiation-induced defects.

—NoCs are a well established research topic and several implementations have been proposed for Self-healing. Self-healing refers to the ability of a system to detect faults or failures and fix them through healing or repairing. The main problems in current self-healing approaches are area overhead and scalability for complex structure since they are based on redundancy and spare blocks. Also, faulty router can isolate PE from other router nodes which can reduce the overall performance of the system. This paper presents a self-healing for a router to avoid denied fault PE function and isolation PE from other nodes. In the proposed design, the neighbor routers receive signal from a faulty router which keeps them to send the data packet which has only faulted router destination to a faulty router. Control unite turns on switches to connect four input ports to local ports successively to send coming packets to PE. The reliability of the proposed technique is studied and compared to conventional system with different failure rates. This approach is capable of healing 50% of the router. The area overhead is 14% for the proposed approach which is much lower compared to other approaches using redundancy.

This work demonstrates an easy and cost-effective synthesis of PANI-PPY conducting nanoflakes (NFs) with a
self-healing capability. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis shows the widths of NFs are ~30 nm, while

to self-restore and ultra-fast self-powering nature. This work also demonstrates a very easy and cost-effective
method to develop polymeric nanomaterials via temperature-assisted polymerization, which need only a stirrer
with a hot plate. Theoretical analysis (DFT calculations using Gaussian 09 and Gauss view 05) shows a consistent
increase in stability when the number of molecules in the polymer chains analyzed was increased. The developed
self-healing triboelectric nanogenerators exhibited stable performance before and after healing.

We present the results from our 12th annual horizon scan of issues likely to impact biological conservation in the future. From a list of 97 topics, our global panel of 25 scientists and practitioners identified the top 15 issues that we believe society may urgently need to address. These issues are either novel in the biological conservation sector or represent a substantial positive or negative step-change in impact at global or regional level. Six issues, such as coral reef deoxygenation and changes in polar coastal productivity, affect marine or coastal ecosystems and seven relate to human and ecosystem-level responses to climate change. Identification of potential forthcoming issues for biological conservation may enable increased preparedness by researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers.

This paper proposes novel methods for making embryonic bio-inspired hardware efficient against faults through self-healing, fault prediction, and fault-prediction assisted self-healing. The proposed self-healing recovers a faulty embryonic cell through innovative usage of healthy cells. Through exper-imentations, it is observed that self-healing is effective, but it takes a considerable amount of time for the hardware to recover from a fault that occurs suddenly without forewarning. To get over this problem of delay, novel deep learning-based formulations are proposed for fault predictions. The proposed self-healing technique is then deployed along with the proposed fault prediction methods to gauge the accuracy and delay of embryonic hardware. The proposed fault prediction and self-healing methods have been implemented in VHDL over FPGA. The proposed fault predictions achieve high accuracy with low training time. The accuracy is up to 99.36% with the training time of 2.16 min. The area overhead of the proposed self-healing method is 34%, and the fault recovery percentage is 75%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such work in embryonic hardware, and it is expected to open a new frontier in fault-prediction assisted self-healing for embryonic systems.

The aim of this study is analyzing the self-healing capability of high strength concrete (M70) with nano silica and crystalline admixture in three types of environmental exposures i.e. water immersion, wet/dry cycles and water contact. The percentage replacements of cement with nano silica were 1%, 2%, 3% with addition of 1.1% crystalline admixture. The specimens were pre-cracked at 28 days in the range of 0.10-0.40mm and the time set for healing was 42 days. The result shows that all the mixes have considerable amount of closing ability and strength regaining capacity for all exposure conditions. The concrete with 2% nano silica and 1.1% crystalline admixture (CA) has complete crack closing ability and strength regaining capacity for water immersion and wet/dry cycle conditions.

Background: Drug addicts are exposed to many psychological and physical injuries due to the problems they experience in their lives; thus, they need training for psychological improvement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of self-healing training on psychological capital and a sense of cohesion in drug addicts in 2020. Methods: This study was a two-stage quasi-experimental study (experimental and control) in three stages (pre-test, post-test, and follow-up). Using convenience sampling, we selected 30 men willing to participate in the project and randomly divided them into the experimental (n= 15) and control (n= 15) groups. The Psychological Capital Questionnaire and the Sense of Coherence Questionnaire were administered as a pre-test. The experimental group underwent 14 sessions (90 minutes per week) of self-healing training. The follow-up was performed after 45 days. Analysis of the data involved both descriptive and inferential statistics, including mean, standard deviation, and the repeated measures ANOVA. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 24. Results: The results showed that self-healing training had a significant effect on increasing psychological capital, increasing hope with the most effect and resilience with the least effect, as well as increasing participants' self-efficacy and sense of cohesion (P<0.05). The self-healing training had no effect on optimism. The results remained until the follow-up stage. Conclusion: According to the results, self-healing training can be used as one of the new positive approaches to increase the mental health of drug addicts in treatment centers related to addiction with relatively lasting effects to increase self-care skills.
