This memoir investigates the roots of my core anxiety, the incessant but impossible ability to achieve perfection. It is framed by my experience getting a second tattoo, which is a line from T.S. Eliot's modernist poem, "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," and ties together both my internal struggle and my affinity for physical pain. This memoir draws a line between the past and the present, seeking to find a connection between struggling with anxiety and engaging in self-mutilation as a source of relief.

This is a study of genre dealing with the sketch in a historical and theoretical perspective. Focus is on the Swedish tradition in its earliest domestic and international context in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. and the aim is to clarify its generic roots, developments, ramifications and variations. The issue to be examined is how and why this initially bourgeois genre happened to become one of the most important genres of the literature of the young working class movement. In this context the problem of the biased perspective of critical scholarship on this kind of minor genres is actualised: why is the sketch debased and marginalized not only from canonical generic hierarchies, but also from prestigious literary scholarship?
The study is thus an example of early cultural studies, cultural materialism, with its roots in Marxist theory. It consists of four chapters, starting with a survey of the proletarian sketch in Swedish working class newspapers at the beginning of the twentieth century. Chapter two examines the term »sketch« in an etymological perspective and the concept of the sketch in a historical perspective, and eventually the phenomenon of the sketch as treated in literary scholarship. Finally the issue of definition is discussed. Chapter three examines the interactive traditions of the sketch, not only in literature but also in visual art, and how they engendered the modern sketch in its bourgeois and finally proletarian version. Chapter four closes the study with a widening of perspective, through which dominant traditions of Swedish literary historical scholarship, inherited from Fredrik Böök, are scrutinized and criticised.

This book presents an extensive dictionary of the Dagaare language (Niger-Congo; Gur (Mabia)), focussing on the dialect of Central Dagaare, spoken in the Upper West region of Ghana. The dictionary provides comprehensive definitions, example sentences and the English translations, phonetic forms, inflected forms, etymological notes as well as information dialectal variation. This work is intended as a resource for linguists, but also as a resource for Dagaare speakers. Also included is a grammatical sketch of Dagaare contributed by Prof. Adams Bodomo.

This essay analyzes one of the major expressions of the sociological critique of sociological reasoning, the objectivation of the subject of objectivation, who should analyze the sociohistorical conditions of possibility of the very act of objectivation. Though Bourdieu's invitation to a reflexive sociology of sociology has not been widely accepted and put into practice, the authors argue that its actual application actually brings about consistent payoff: this special issue represents but one installment. Reclaiming a place for socio-analysis, this paper highlights how this activity can produce a cognitive difference in the making of sociological research, insofar as its genesis and development are defined by the sharing of a specific thought style, existing within and because of an intersubjective framework.

In this paper we present the development of the terminology extraction module for Slovene which was framed within the Sketch Engine corpus management system and motivated by the KAS research project on resources and tools for analysing academic Slovene. We describe the formalism used for defining the grammaticality of terms as well as the calculation of the score of individual terms, give an overview of the definition of the term grammar for Slovene and evaluate it on a Slovene KAS corpus of academic Slovene.

Sketch as an image search query is an ideal alternative to text in capturing the fine-grained visual details. Prior successes on fine-grained sketch-based image retrieval (FG-SBIR) have demonstrated the importance of tackling the unique traits of sketches as opposed to photos, e.g., temporal vs. static, strokes vs. pixels, and abstract vs. pixel-perfect. In this paper, we study a further trait of sketches that has been overlooked to date, that is, they are hierarchical in terms of the levels of detail -- a person typically sketches up to various extents of detail to depict an object. This hierarchical structure is often visually distinct. In this paper, we design a novel network that is capable of cultivating sketch-specific hierarchies and exploiting them to match sketch with photo at corresponding hierarchical levels. In particular, features from a sketch and a photo are enriched using cross-modal co-attention, coupled with hierarchical node fusion at every level to form a better ...

This book contains a selection of theoretical works and photo essays as well as a chronicle of photo competitions organised in the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts at Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University since 2008, which is meant as the record of thoughts related to the specific, omnipresent though little examined so far, realm of the theory of architecture, i.e. photography. This paper frames preliminary explorations in the process of connecting new designers in an online, distance learning environment, developing strategies for distance education and collaboration. The research seeks to better understand the multifaceted issues developed by the loss of in-class face time in relation to growing global communities and education systems. The involved authors have begun to explore the complexities of not only communicating technical knowhow as it relates to design (both in terms of building systems and software instruction) but also at engaging the loss of the physical studio interactions. There has been substantial study regarding the efficacy of online instruction as it pertains to general subject matter, however, study into specific relationships and interactions in the design process remain fertile ground for research (Harrison, 2015). The authors are exploring remote technological solutions to support the behavioural dimension that in-class interactio...

This paper recognizes the problem of matching images from different modalities. These different modality images are known as heterogeneous images. These type of images have large differences between them. These differences are known as modality gap. To reduce this gap, here proposed a new algorithm called EDA. It has wide applications like IR to optical image matching, Sketch to optical image matching etc. The main advantage of EDA approach is we can do matching of different modalities using the same feature descriptor. The key idea is to learn an encoding mechanism which will turn images in different modalities into their encoded images to reduce the modality gap between them. Here Sketch to optical image matching is done as an example.
