Student Residence

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between smartphone addiction, cyberloafing, stress and social support. The research data were collected from 885 undergraduate students studying at a public university in Turkey using an online questionnaire. The relationship between the variables was tested by path analysis. The results of the research showed that class level, family income and place of residence did not have a significant effect on smartphone addiction, cyberloafing, stress and perceived social support. Smartphone addiction, stress and perceived social support differed significantly by gender. Stress was shown to have a significant effect on cyberloafing and smartphone addiction, and cyberloafing to have a significant effect on smartphone addiction. Social support had a small but significant effect on cyberloafing, but did not seem to have a significant effect on stress. The results of the research are discussed with regard to higher education students and future studies.

The purpose of this article is to equip housing professionals at public colleges and universities to adequately handle the challenges related to the religious expression of residents and resident assistants living in the residence halls. To that end, case law and other legal principles are discussed to provide guidance related to the freedom of religious expression within residential environments at public institutions. Furthermore, the fear of offending students is addressed in an effort to encourage productive dialogue about religious differences.

Los edificios de las facultades de Ciencias y Medicina, proyectados a principios del siglo XX en el paseo de Valencia al Mar, actual avenida Blasco Ibáñez, constituyen el origen de un espacio universitario en Valencia. Sin embargo, estos inmuebles, aun siendo importantes, no forman por sí mismos una Ciudad Universitaria. Será más tarde, cuando el arquitecto valenciano Javier Goerlich Lleó configure este lugar, a partir de tres edificios principales: el Campo de Deportes, la Residencia de Estudiantes y la Escuela de Altos Estudios Mercantiles. Los tres, aunque construidos luego, fueron proyectados durante la Segunda República, y deben su empuje inicial al rector Mariano Gómez González. La Ciudad Universitaria de Valencia, levantada entonces a imagen de la de Madrid, es un espacio singular. El estilo empleado en estas edificaciones es muy característico de la arquitectura moderna realizada en Valencia en los iniciales años 30 del siglo XX. Este conjunto, en parte desaparecido, debe aún hoy valorarse.

The buildings of the Sciences and Medicine Schools, designed at the beginning of the 20th century in the Promenade “Valencia al Mar”, now Blasco Ibañez Avenue, constitute the origin of a university space in Valencia. However, these buildings, although important, do not form a University City by themselves. It will be later, when the Valencian architect, Javier Goerlich Lleó, built three main buildings: The Sports Field, The Student Residence and the School of High Mercantile Studies. The three of them, although they were built later on, were designed during the Second Republic, and owe their initial thrust to the rector Mariano Gómez González. The University City of Valencia, built to the image of the one in Madrid, is a unique space. The style used in these buildings is very characteristic of modern architecture made in Valencia in the early 30s of the 20th century. This group, lost in part, must still be valued today.
This text, and the new data provided, is therefore useful to bear witness to its construction.

Subject of the Article is the interesting judgment of the Czech Supreme Administrative Court as of 20 May 2010 dealing with the interpretation of international treaties on social security. The judgment is remarkable for the scope of resources of international (or Community) origin of which it takes account, at least for the purposes of comparison; it also concentrates on the difference between domicile and habitual residence, and the significance of the subjective and the objective element of the connection to a particular territory. By contrast to the prevailing practice in Czech courts, the judgment offers a detailed comparison with the domestic (national) laws of other countries. The judgment also repeatedly refers to a “centre of all living conditions”, or “centre of interests”, etc. In the circumstances of the present case, though, i.e. as concerns the general personal status of a natural person or in connection with the specific branch of social security, these concepts lack any qualified meaning or legal definition. They are therefore an expression of the general dislocation of a natural person’s connections to a place in a particular state in which the person intends to reside and establish all of his or her personal and professional connections. However, we must strictly distinguish between that concept and, for instance, the centre of the debtor’s main interests within the meaning of jurisdiction laws in insolvency proceedings with international elements in EU law, as introduced by Article 3 of Council Regulation (EC) No. 1346/2000, on insolvency proceedings. Th at is a sui generis concept introduced by said Regulation in so-called cross-border insolvency in EU law. One of the differences distinguishing the “centre of main interests” from the general definition of a natural person’s main living and other connections is, for instance, the fact that such concept, in terms of European insolvency law, applies to legal persons as well, takes special account of economic relations and accentuates (according to the existing case law) the way such economic relations are perceived and viewed by third parties, i.e. the debtor’s creditors. We have to point out that the logical structure, as well as the reasons for the decision, contributes to it being a very modern and highly professional decision, with balanced reasons. The reasons take account of both domestic resources and resources of international origin, which were very well chosen in their historical connotations. The court articulated a politically very careful, yet pertinent and fitting description of the correct approach to the interpretation of international treaties after the political and social changes in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which resulted in radical changes both inside these countries and in the mutual relations between these countries. This international political and international legal reality was masterfully exposed by the court on the platform of the traditional foundations of the international law of treaties, as primarily expressed in the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties (1969). This decision definitely deserves attention, even international attention.

In Finland for almost one hundred years until the 1990s, student halls of residence have provided accommodation near schools to 7-15-year-old pupils who lived faraway. This study was focuses on the second widest municipality of Finland, Sodankylä, and countryside pupils' possibility to study. The target period of this study covered the year of establishment of the first secondary school of Sodankylä in 1943 until 1972 when the comprehensive school system was introduced. The purpose it to describe the life span of the secondary schools of Sodankylä with special focus on the role of the student hall of residence.
