Teatro sociale

In occasione dell'abbattimento del Teatro Sociale di Borgosesia, è emersa la necessità di recuperare l'archivio, i documenti e le testimonianze inerenti un edificio che ha ricoperto un ruolo centrale per la comunità borgosesiana e non solo.
Per l'occasione è stato organizzato un convegno con un approccio multidisciplinare, occasione che ha portato poi alla pubblicazione degli atti.
Il saggio "Il Teatro Sociale tra le due guerre: cultura, propaganda e censura" si occupa della storia del teatro e di Borgosesia (inscindibile il rapporto tra l'attività del teatro e i bisogni delle amministrazioni comunali) tra la prima guerra mondiale fino al 1950, anno in cui fu inaugurato il nuovo teatro. Particolarmente interessante è stato osservare come nei periodi più drammatici ci fosse un tentativo di limitare fortemente le attività ricreative, in particolare ci fu una particolare attenzione nei confronti del Carnevale, festività da sempre simbolo di lassismo e inviso alle autorità.

The issue of migrations, owing to its strong cultural relevance, offers a preferential outline of the post-dramatic, performative and social polyvalence of contemporary theatricality and transversally reveals a widespread, albeit frequently not concerted, engagement to act at local level in pursuit of an inclusive society. Playing Inclusion. The Performing Arts in the Time of Migrations: Thinking, Creating and Acting Inclusion is a collection of essays written by theatrologists, sociologists, psychologists, artists, performers, social theatre experts and facilitators, who describe and analyse with their different points of view and methodologies some experiences where performative arts and practices enact reflexive, creative and active processes aimed at taking care of the complex migratory phenomenon.

That opera was and can still be a great source of social status, prestige, cultural and symbolic capital, is already quite well known. That it can play such a role successfully in an utterly specific and intricate manner, which today seems entirely anachronistic and obsolete, is rarer to find. One such example notorious for remaining a class in itself is connected to the Mantua opera house called Teatro Sociale, which is privately owned by the heirs of the original box-holders who built the theatre in 1822, thus in a quite different Zeitgeist than today. Since then, there have been many political and social changes for the city of Mantua, which has resulted in a noticeable transformation of just one province of a much larger foreign-domineering monarchy over the patriotic unification with other Italian lands to the democratic membership within the Republic of Italy. The renowned opera house of Mantua, a private institution with public purpose, has managed through all those years of massive social change to remain untouched by one single element; that is its box-holders never surrendered their boxes to the Municipality or the State. It is semi-privately managed by the heirs who have until recently administered it as if it were still the 1800s. With this article, we attempt to reveal the historical context and social particularities that help explain that social world of a specific cultural tradition that have produced and reproduced such endurable box-holding practices over time in a city where possessing the opera house was and remains more important than attending it. This analysis is done on the basis of the social status theories of Max Weber, Talcott Parsons and Pierre Bourdieu, but particularly on the basis of Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, disposition, distinction and reproduction. Hopefully, through analysis it is easier to understand the “anachronistic” story of the tenacious and self-willed Mantuan box-holders, including a complex and historically conditioned situation showing that attending the opera house is one thing, but to own it is something else entirely.

Interactions between political activism and performative practices are historically numerous in Italy but, recently, they appear somehow institutionalised. In this scenario, some social theatre initiatives, combining arts with care, education and social development, might constitute a new outlet for activism. After a brief introduction on social theatre, this paper seeks to establish the quality of its civic and political meaning through the analysis of two recent cases: the Franco Agostino Teatro Festival in Crema (Milan) and the Montevelino "school without boundaries" in Milan, different instances of performative practices promoting forms of active involvement of the local community in changes of curriculum, education system and community identity. L’analisi del processo di obsolescenza che investe diversi edifici residenziali di ispirazione modernista e funzionalista è alla radice del mio intervento.
In "Rovine e macerie. Il senso del tempo" (2003), Marc Augé imputa all’architettura contemporanea di anelare non «all’eternità di un sogno di pietra, ma a un presente “sostituibile” all’infinito».
In "Come la modernità dimentica" (2010), l’antropologo Paul Connerton parla di «una lotta continua in cui dei paesaggi fisici adattati alle necessità del capitalismo vengono prodotti in un particolare momento storico soltanto per essere poi distrutti o smantellati in un momento storico successivo».
Le abitazioni inserite in questo processo sono pensate come “edifici-contenitore”, divengono “nonluoghi abitativi” senza identità né storia, incapaci di attivare minimi meccanismi sociali e memoriali.
"Rabot 4-358" (2013), spettacolo del regista e attore belga Simon Allemeersch, documenta il recupero memoriale avviato all’interno di tre case sociali in via di demolizione nella città di Gand, le “Torri Rabot”, con il duplice obiettivo di costruirvi una comunità di abitanti e di non lasciar cadere la loro storia nell’oblio.
Presentando questo caso studio, nel mio intervento vorrei mettere in luce le modalità attraverso cui alcuni artisti contemporanei riescono ad attivare processi identitari e memoriali all’interno di luoghi abitativi “sorpassati” dalla stessa società politica e civile che li ha precedentemente edificati.
