В предлагаемом Вашему вниманию издании впервые осуществлен перевод на русский язык X и XI книг фундаментального труда францисканского монаха Бернардино де Саагуна (1498 или 1500–1590). Данные книги, в основном, посвящены вопросам медицины и ботаники. Для написания такого медицинского трактата автор использовал в качестве информаторов индейских лекарей, предоставивших львиную долю сведений о местных растениях, болезнях, лекарствах и методах лечения.

В отечественной науке до сих пор отсутствовали какие-либо исследования по истории медицины или ботаники астеков, поэтому публикация столь важного исторического источника должна будет восполнить этот пробел и пробудить живой интерес к наследию одной из месоамериканских цивилизаций. В своей «Истории» сам Саагун дал описания 123 лекарственным травам, в то время, как в текстах его информаторов упоминаются 266 растений. В целом же, в его книгах упоминаются 724 растения, из которых можно идентифицировать 328 видов, относящихся к 101 семье. Примечательно, что автор дал, фактически, первые описания таким растениям: кукуруза, чиа, авокадо, амарант, фасоль, тыква, агава, гуайява, черимойя, перец красный острый, табак, батат, какао, маниок, капулин, лукума, опунция, хикама, сапота, томат, ваниль, юкка и многим другим.

Книга рассчитана на студентов, аспирантов и преподавателей исторических, филологических, биологических факультетов и медицинских вузов, а также всех тех, кто интересуется доколумбовыми цивилизациями.

En este trabajo ofrecemos una interpretación nueva de la guerra que los grupos nahuas prehispánicos denominaban xochiyaoyotl o "guerra florida". Cuestionamos las propuestas existentes y planteamos que la guerra florida corresponde a un modelo bélico amerindio que tuvo como fin la incorporación del otro al grupo propio. Se trata de una estrategia cosmopolítica cuya finalidad es la construcción de la sociedad a través de la obtención de un hijo virtual en forma de cautivo, una apropiación con múltiples beneficios para el captor y para la sociedad. En este sentido, las relaciones de "afinidad o sociabilidad virtual"-como las ha definido Viveiros de Castro-entre los grupos enemigos, aunque muy poco estudiadas hasta el momento, son, a nuestro juicio, una clave para entender el mecanismo de la guerra florida.
This article offers a new interpretation of an indigenous war that the Aztecs called "Flowery War" (xochiyaoyotl). Existing approaches are questioned to propose that the Flowery War corresponds to an Amerindian war model aimed at the incorporation of the "other" into the victorious group. In this search for a desired alterity, the Indians displayed a remarkable preference for their close neighbors, a choice based on the proportion of "humanity" desired. It was a cosmopolitical strategy whose purpose was the construction of society by obtaining a virtual child in the form of a captive, an appropriation with multiple benefits for the captor and for society. In this sense, the relationships of "virtual affinity or sociability"-as defined by Viveiros de Castro-between enemy groups, although little studied to date, provide a key to understanding the mechanism of Flowery War.

The Aztecs of Central Mexico (AD 1325–1521) did not conceive of color in the abstract. Rather they thought of color in terms of its material basis. This relationship between color and its material manifestation determined the uses and meanings of colors in this society. This is evident in the way the Aztecs refer to “color”. They used the word tlapalli, which literally means “something dyed”, but also designated coloring materials. Moreover, tlapalli was employed to designate red things. Making the most of the polysemy of this word, the Aztecs used it to name cochineal, the material par excellence to paint and dye in red. The Aztecs also used annatto and red ocher as red dyes and pigments, but they were not referred to as tlapalli. This distinction in terminology shows that even if the chromatic qualities of these red materials could appear similar to a modern eye, they were different to an Aztec one. In fact, the diverse origins, provenance, physical properties of cochineal, annatto and red ocher, as well as the procedure through which they were transformed into coloring materials, made them conveyers of distinct meanings. Using both historical and iconographic evidence, my essay investigates the singularity of Aztec reds, demonstrating the significance of the materiality of color in this culture. Doing so, it inspires a novel way of examining color in ancient Mexico, claiming that it is essential to explore the meanings underlying the selection and uses of the materials that colored the Pre-Columbian world.
