Cihuatl, Xochitl y Cuicatl: Análisis textual de la mujer en los cantos nahuas, examina la agencia femenina como parte del análisis textual e iconográfico en la literatura precolombina y colonial mexicana. Además, este análisis es un aporte a las ramas de los estudios etnográficos, etnohistóricos, arqueológicos, antropológicos, históricos y de historia del arte. Siendo un análisis interdisciplinario, nos da una imagen más completa de la representación de las mujeres nahuas que describe la voz interlocutora femenina de los cantos. Así se destacan los diferentes roles que ejercía la agencia femenina en el ambiente público y privado de su vida cotidiana en la sociedad de los Siglos XV y XVI del centro de México. Desde un punto de vista literario y cultural, este estudio se basa en ocho cantos nahuas recopilados durante el Siglo XVI, en crónicas escritas durante los Siglos XVI y XVII de españoles y de mestizos, como también de varios códices precolombinos y de la post-conquista de los Siglos XV, XVI y XVII de México.

En toda cultura y de cualquier temporalidad, la apropiación del mundo se genera
de diversas maneras, una de ellas son los ritos. Se trata de un lenguaje complejo con variadas
formas de expresión, entre ellas, los sonidos. Estos nacen a partir de la percepción sensorial
del entorno; la naturaleza y la fauna son los principales referentes para la creación de
sonidos que expresan necesidades de comunicación e interacción. Es pertinente un estudio
comparativo entre dos culturas mesoamericanas para encontrar coincidencias y diferencias
de percepción. En la vida ritual prehispánica del centro de México y del área maya, cada
sonido tuvo un simbolismo particular y con funciones específicas ¿cuáles fueron estos sonidos?
¿cuáles eran sus funciones? Los resultados son claves para una nueva forma de entender
la cosmovisión indígena previa a la conquista. El enlace entre el pasado prehispánico y el
presente ayuda a identificar los procesos de ruptura y continuidad a través de las expresiones
sonoras. Los ritos eran y siguen siendo un espejo visual y sonoro, una construcción metafórica
que prescribía y describía parte de procesos rituales para los nahuas y mayas. Las fiestas
y ceremonias indígenas tenían y aún lo tienen un ‘lenguaje sonoro’. Este artículo aborda
ejemplos concretos sobre modalidades de conocimiento como lo es la percepción acústica
de la naturaleza en espacios determinados como el juego de pelota o el templo que unían
metafórica y simbólicamente a los participantes del rito con sus deidades.

Para los nahuas de la Sierra Negra de Puebla, el consumo de maíz es considerado uno de los elementos que establecen la distinción entre los humanos y los no humanos, pues mediante este se crean cuerpos que se diferenciarán, entre otras cosas, por su estabilidad o la falta de ella. La fabricación del cuerpo requiere de una serie de acciones realizadas a lo largo de toda la vida. En este texto se dará cuenta, principalmente, de la importancia que tiene la alimentación mediante productos locales (por ejemplo, maíz y frijol) –frente a aquella que conforma cuerpos anómalos como el de los migrantes–, así como el consumo de sal y el bautizo, para dar paso a la descripción del papel que juega el trabajo en la milpa en la conformación de cuerpos adecuados para lo nahua, es decir, lo humano por excelencia. Se pondrá especial énfasis a la niñez como una etapa donde el control de la inestabilidad requiere de un esfuerzo mayor. Los niños nahuas son asociados a los antepasados, a lo acuoso y a lo mítico. Su humanidad está constantemente en riesgo, pues su cuerpo no ha llegado a los niveles necesarios de madurez.

The Nahuas have an impressive tradition of saberes, which can be considered as
knowledge that is rooted in the experiences, cosmovision and way of life as a
group. Due to the length of the existence of Nahuas and the different indigenous
group that constitute this broader group, it is relevant to analyze their saberes
throughout their existence.
For this paper I study the different processes that Nahuas used to create and
socialize their saberes with a decolonial and intercultural approach. The saberes
that I will analyze in this paper are the use of the process of “taking face” by the
tlamatinimeh, and the saberes of the Tonalámatl.
It is relevant to understand and promote indigenous saberes to rethink western
dominant conceptions of knowledge and development.

The volume provides a reconstruction and analysis of the knowledge and practices concerning health, illness and therapy among the Nahua of Mexico, since the testimonies on Aztec medicine collected by the first conquerors, through documents of the colonial era, up to the present ethnography, based on a thirty-year research in the Sierra of Puebla. By examining the Nahua concepts of the person, the delicate balance on which health depends and the dangers that can cause illness, the book highlights the articulated spectrum of diagnostic categories of the indigenous medical tradition, as well as the therapeutic practices (which combine herbs and other substances, bodily manipulations and ritual acts) through which healing is pursued. The in-depth examination of Nahua medicine reveals the misunderstandings that – since the first contacts with European medicine - have characterized its assessment by non-indigenous people and which still persist today, when the health institutions have opened up new spaces of collaboration with native specialists. Precisely the critical comparison between the peculiarities of the various kinds of medical knowledge which co-exist in the current panorama of medical pluralism allows us to grasp the reasons for the vitality and persistence of indigenous medicine.

The Grolier Codex (Codice Maya de Mexico, CMM) is discussed in the context of the archaeoastronomy of the ancient Americas on pages 98-99 of the March 1990 National Geographic Magazine article "America's Ancient Skywatchers" by John B. Carlson. One of four known ancient Maya books, the Grolier Codex depicts different manifestations of the planet Venus; the column of glyphs on the left of each panel records days in a 104-year Venus almanac. These plaster-coated bark-paper pages, carbon-dated to the 13th century, represent only half of the 20-page original. A numbered photographic arrangement of the Grolier Codex depictes the author's discovery that Codex pages 10 and 11 are actually two parts of the same "page 10".  Carlson clarifies the identities of Venus deities depicted in the Grolier Codex from a comparison of images from the Cacaxtla murals and links the images of the Grolier Codex with ancient Maya astronomically timed ritual warfare and sacrifice. The article examines an aspect of the conceptions of personhood, found since very early times in Mesoamerica. First of all, the idea that human beings are all endowed with one or more alter egos, mostly animals (but also natural phenomena, such as lightning, wind, etc.), that the species of the "double" determines the character and physical and spiritual resistance of the individual, and that the destinies of the two counterparts are closely interconnected, in a relationship that some scholars have called "co-essence". Secondly, the idea that some individuals (sometimes due to the particular nature of their alter ego) can abandon their human features and turn into animals or other beings, in order to perform prodigious acts. These two conceptions, present with many variations among native Mesoamerican peoples, have often been labeled as "tonalism" (from the Nahuatl "tonalli", which originally referred to the calendrical day-sign) and "nahualism” or “nagualism” (from the Nahuatl “nahualli”, which designated a transforming-witch).

The essay examines the use of monochrome in a few illustrations of the Florentine Codex in relationship to the theme represented, the corresponding text and the general layout of the work as a whole. It argues that monochrome painting was a conscious decision employed by the painters as a strategy for commenting on the incorporation of European traditions into Nahua religion and history, as depicted in Sahagún’s General History.

The Rain Gods’ Rebellion examines Nahua oral narratives to illuminate the cultural basis of the 1977–1984 rebellion against the local Hispanic elite in Huitzilan de Serdán, Mexico. Drawing from forty years of fieldwork in the region, James M. Taggart traces the sociopolitical role of Nahua rain gods—who took both human and divine forms—back hundreds of years and sheds new light on the connections between social experiences and the Nahua understanding of water and weather in stories. As Taggart shows, Nahua tales of the rain gods’ rebellion anticipated the actual 1977 land invasion in Huitzilan, in which some 200–300 Nahua were killed.

The Rain Gods’ Rebellion reveals how local culture evolves from the expression of unrest to organized insurgency and then into collective memory. Taggart records a tradition of storytelling in which Nahuas radicalized themselves through recounting the rain gods’ stories—stories of the gods organizing and striking with bolts of lightning the companion spirits of autocratic local leaders who worked closely with mestizos. The tales are part of a tradition of resisting the friars’ efforts to convert the Nahuas, Totonacs, Otomi, and Tepehua to Christianity and inspiring nativistic movements against invading settlers.

Providing a rare longitudinal look at the cultural basis of this grassroots insurgency, The Rain Gods’ Rebellion offers rare insight into the significance of oral history in forming Nahua collective memory and, by extension, culture. It will be of significance to scholars of Indigenous studies, anthropology, oral history, and violence studies, as well as linguistic anthropologists and sociolinguists.

El articulo periodístico reseña brevemente la Danza de los Negritos practicada en Puebla y Veracruz, en un complejo simbolismo mesoamericano y colonial con las personas en condición de esclavitud en contacto con los totonacos y nahuas. Describe los personajes y episodios de la danza.

The focus of this paper is the native concept of chichimecayotl, studied through pictorial and written evidence. Images of nomad ancestors, founders of altepetl and their descendants display Chichimec traits
that are important in the iconography of rank of pre-Hispanic and postcontact native nobility; these attributes reveal a constant tension between humble and prestigious connotations. A significant aspect of this
analysis is the transformation of the Chichimec tradition across the sixteenth century under the impact of European concepts; another essential factor was the outbreak of a violent and prolonged war with pagan inhabitants of the northern regions. It is argued that pictorial images of "contemporary" Chichimecs mirror conceptualizations expressed in verbal language recorded in Nahuatl and Spanish sources. However, despite the profound changes that the term chichimecatl underwent, native communities continued to view the arrival of the founders as a source of prestige and legitimacy through the late colonial period.

La sociedad zitlalteca se ha distinguido por ser de las pocas sociedades en la región montaña baja del estado en conservar en gran número sus tradiciones y forma de vida que le da identidad a las generaciones presentes. Sin embargo mucha de esta tradición ha sufrido diversas modificaciones en gran medida a la influencia de factores externos como lo es la influencia angloamericana.
Cabe resaltar que mucha de la memoria histórica se ha perdido en los archivos y vestigios que aún siguen bajo tierra, existen muchos legajos en los archivos parroquiales que fueron quemados o deteriorados al paso del tiempo y los agentes propios de destrucción de los materiales impresos, al igual que mucho de los monumentos y vestigios que permanecían en pie fueron devastados por la mano del hombre en su afán de permitir más áreas de cultivos y explotación de la tierra con fines agrícolas.

In her groundbreaking investigation from the perspective of the aesthetics of religion, Isabel Laack explores the religion and art of writing of the pre-Hispanic Aztecs of Mexico. La tesis pretende responder la pregunta: ¿Cuál es la organización de la producción y las estrategias de distribución de los artesanos(a)s nahuas del bordado del municipio de Chicontepec, ubicado en el Estado de Veracruz en los años 2018 a 2020? La cuestión del párrafo anterior —se plantea responder— con la siguiente hipótesis: “si consideramos que hombres y mujeres de Chicontepec han empezado a buscar en la producción de textiles una forma de ganarse la vida, entonces es de suponer que, para lograr su inserción en el mercado nacional e internacional, necesitan valerse de diversas estrategias entre las que destacan, la conformación de redes de distribución para su producción y el apoyo de instituciones gubernamentales”. Para lo anterior se fijaron los siguientes objetivos generales de la investigación: 1.- Explicar la organización de la producción de los artesanos(a)s del bordado nahua de Chicontepec, Veracruz. 2.- Describir las estrategias de distribución de los artesanos(a)s del bordado nahua.

El trabajo analiza la danza de negritos practicada por totonacos y nahuas de la Sierra Norte de Puebla, México, vinculándola con el enfoque Afroamérica y Afroindolatinoamericano, consistentes en visibilizar las relaciones entre lo africano, lo indígena-originario, lo mestizo y blanco en una misma condición, sin menoscabar a ninguno de los involucrados y, por el contrario, buscar las intersecciones de las relaciones sociales entre dichos grupos y superar así una condición de invisibilidad de lo afro en nuestro país, y más aún, de las profundas relaciones establecidas con las poblaciones indígenas.

The fourth known pre-Columbian Maya codex, the only one discovered in the twentieth century, was found by looters in the mid-1960s. First exhibited in New York in 1971, what has come to be known as the  Grolier Codex is half of a 20-page, 104-year divinatory hybrid-style Mesoamerican Venus Almanac, probably the physically oldest surviving pre-Columbian book, and with new radiocarbon dates that place it in the thirteenth century CE. It is likely to be the oldest surviving book on paper from the Americas as well as the only ancient Maya codex now residing in Mexico. Although most Mayanists have accepted it as authentic, based in part on the author’s 40 years of research, it remains an unacknowledged Mexican national treasure, as it has never been officially recognized. Mesoamerican Venus Almanacs were widely used in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica to regulate practices of sacred warfare, the goal of which was to obtain captives for sacrifice, their blood shed to invoke the personified forces of rain and fertility. The  Codex offers unique images of 10 of the 20 manifestations of Venus, greatly enriching our knowledge of these traditions. The present study offers a brief history of accounts of the discovery of the Codex and allegedly associated artifacts; presents a documented photographic history; outlines the author’s comprehensive program of research, including several new scientific discoveries; and offers a new Latinized name that recognizes that the Codex Mayano-Mexicanus is an authentic ancient book deriving from the Maya culture and now properly residing in Mexico.

Resumen :Ante la necesidad de una nueva revisión de las crónicas coloniales que tratan del
calendario nativo del centro de México, se revisa una serie de fuentes que guardan relación entre sí y que por lo general no se había puesto atención a la forma en que se vinculan y derivan unas de otras. En su mayoría las crónicas presentan y derivan de lo que parecen ser tres tradiciones proponentes cada una de una correlación entre el calendario indígena y el cristiano; una de estas fechas representativas es el 1 de marzo, la cual analizaremos y mostraremos sus conexiones e implicaciones que conlleva. Es de notar que se pondrá énfasis en la revisión de fray Toribio de Benavente Motolinia y de fray Diego Durán, autores ampliamente utilizados por investigaciones contemporáneos pero que, sin embargo, hasta la fecha nadie había estudiado a fondo y comprendido la verdadera manera en que escribieron acerca del calendario.

This paper seeks to use Ixquihuacan Nahuatl N, a true definite article systematically used in a highly configurational dialect of Nahua, as a "toy case" to decipher the chaos of Classical Nahuatl syntax.

Resumen En el pensamiento nahua prehispánico la humanidad fue creada para trabajar incluso después de la muerte. Los difuntos iban a lugares determinados en los cuales se transformaban en seres nue-vos para cumplir allí con sus labores. Sin embargo, en la cosmovisión prehispánica los sitios donde moraban los muertos se encontraban en estrecha comunicación con el mundo de los vivos, y mu-chas veces se confundían entre sí e influían en el mundo humano. Palabras clave: cosmovisión, cultura nahua, más allá, existencia después de la muerte, Tierra. AbstRAct In pre-Hispanic Nahua thought, humankind was created to work, even after death. Those who passed away went to certain places where they were transformed into new beings so they could carry out the new tasks they had in the place where they had arrived. However, in pre-Hispanic world-view, the places where the dead go were in a close communication with each other as well as with the world of the living, so the dead could influence the human world.
