Theban Myth Cycle

İlk defa ortaya çıkışı gibi kelime anlamı da tartışmalı olan tragedya bir tiyatro türü olarak binlerce yıldır seyircilerin beğenisine sunulmaktadır. Birçok dilde ortak olan ve felaket anlamına gelen ‘trajedi’ kelimesi de bu oyun türünden gelir. Çünkü neredeyse bütün tragedyaların ortak noktası insanın başına gelen felaketlerdir. Bu türün elimize ulaşabilen ilk örnekleri oldukça çarpıcıdır ve uzun süre tragedyanın nasıl olması gerektiği ile ilgili şablon vazifesi görmüştür. Belirli dönemlerde duraklamalar yaşansa da, tragedya tarih boyunca gelişimini devam ettirmiştir. En parlak dönemlerinden birini 16. yüzyılın sonlarında İngiltere’de yaşamıştır. Bu dönem, tiyatronun fiziksel şartlarında çok önemli değişimlere sahne olduğu için, sadece tragedya için değil diğer oyun türleri için de oldukça şanslı bir dönemdir. 19. yüzyıl düşünce dünyasının tragedyayı yeniden anlamlandırması ile beraber türün büyük bir değişime uğradığını söylemek mümkündür. Bu dönem verilen eserler ilk tragedya örnekleri ile yapısal olarak büyük farklılıklar içermektedir. Bu çalışmada antik Yunanistan’dan Sofokles’in Thebai Üçlemesi, Elizabeth Çağından Shakespeare’in Macbeth oyunu ve modern dönemden Arthur Miller’ın kaleme aldığı Satıcının Ölümü adlı eserler benzerlik ve farklılıklar açısından karşılaştırılacaktır.

This comment to the famous Dodwell Vase, an archaic Corinthian pyxis representing two figures bearing heroic names (Agamemnon and Thersander), proposes that the composition establishes a link between two archaic epic cycles: Troy and Thebes. In this essay, we will present a concise story of the discovery of the vessel, introduce the main questions surrounding the piece, and offer a reading of the scenes and inscriptions on the vase. This proposal analyses the figures in light of their mythographic and literary traditions, and hypothesises on the painter’s intention to depict the two heroes, together with other figures and two interconnected scenes, taking into consideration the development of archaic epic cycles.

Commenting on the wall-storming combatant and the connection between Bizye  and Thebes, as well as framing the coin type in historical context and in association with other relevant coin issues.

L’obiettivo di questo contributo è di chiarire la ricezione del mito tebano di Zeto e della sua sposa Aedon in epoca classica attraverso un’analisi dei suoi adattamenti e interpretazioni. Lo spostamento dello sfondo del mito in Tracia può essere letto come una critica nei confronti di questa regione, con la quale Atene aveva in quegli anni dei rapporti difficili. Alcuni elementi deducibili dal Tereo, come la «voce della spola», monstrano che Sofocle ha proposto una rilettura del mito dell’usignolo in termini politici: in questo modo egli intese esprimere la sua avversità a proposito di una possibile alleanza ateniese con la Tracia. Si tratta di un problema capitale nel dibattito politico ateniese all’epoca del regno tracio di Tere e di Sitalce.

L’objectif de cette contribution est de clarifier la réception à l’époque classique du mythe du cycle thébain de Zéthos et son épouse Aédon à travers une analyse de ses adaptations et interprétations. Le déplacement du décor du mythe en Thrace peut être lu comme une critique envers cette région, avec laquelle Athènes avait des rapports difficiles à l’époque. Il y a des éléments déductibles du Térée, comme la « voix de la navette », qui montrent que Sophocle a proposé une relecture du mythe du rossignol en termes politiques : par ce moyen, il veut exprimer son aversion contre la possibilité d’une alliance athénienne avec la Thrace. Il s’agit d’un problème capital dans le débat politique athénien au moment du gouvernement de la Thrace par Térès et Sitalcès.

By analyzing its adaptations and interpretations, this paper will shed light on the reception, in the classical period, of the Theban cycle myth of Zethus and his bride Aëdon. The myth’s displacement resulting from its setting in Thrace can be read as a critique of Thrace itself, with which Athens had difficult relations with at the time. Some topics recognisable from Tereus, such as the “voice of the shuttle”, show that Sophocles re-read the myth of the nightingale in political terms. The re-reading expresses Sophocles’ aversion to any possible alliance with Thrace, a central issue in the Athenian political debate at a time when Thrace was under Teres’ and Sitalces’ government.

Yes, there is one Egyptian Civilization, one Egyptian Culture, but many Egyptian religions; and by this of course I don't mean Aten, Akhenaten and the Atonic Religion, but the systems that antedated Akhenaten for more than two millennia and which survived the Amarna revolution.

From a “differential” approach to myth, I study the Theban Cycle in Book III of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The underlining of some poetic and ideological issues in the rewriting of that legendary story allows me to explain the literary functioning of a major cultural topic in Rome.
Moreover, I show that Cadmus’ foundational legend shapes a specific pattern that mostly conveys the representations of the collective history within Latin literature.
