Antigone

The concept of Limbo, a marginal place where the unbaptised dead are sent to spend eternity in neither pleasure nor pain, has haunted Irish language literature. The consequent ban on burying stillborn children on consecrated ground meant that funerary rites, from wakes to headstones, were routinely withheld from them, while mothers were instructed not to pray for their dead children. Instead, the unbaptised were often buried in unmarked graves in designated marginal spaces called 'cillíní'.

After ​briefly arguing for the importance of traditional Gaelic burial rites, and especially the keen (oral elegy) as a female vernacular art, this paper will examine the ambivalent and sometimes subversive Gaelic literary response to this particular area of church teaching. Drawing on elegiac poems and short stories by Irish language writers Máirtín Ó Cadhain, Derry O'Sullivan, Dairena Ní Chinnéide and Biddy Jenkinson, I will argue that this edict against a rich tradition of funerary rites, Christian and other, constituted a 'bridge too far' for a generally religiously observant community. I will highlight how each text reflects, in its own way, an incomplete grief and an intense pressure on mourners to choose, like Antigone before them, between opposing moral duties to authority and their dead.

Erede di una terribile colpa – l’incesto del padre-fratello Edipo – Antigone è colei che ama eroicamente e che moltiplica i suoi volti nelle riscritture del mito, mostrandosi ora donna innamorata e adolescente inquieta, ora eroina della giustizia, ribelle e martire della ragion di Stato. Pensiamo ad Antigone come alla figlia pietosa e alla sorella devota delle tragedie di Sofocle, ma la ritroviamo soprattutto nelle vesti di paladina della libertà individuale contro tutte le forme di sopraffazione da parte di chi sta al potere. Da Stazio ad Alfieri, da Hölderlin a Hegel, da Brecht ai nostri giorni, Antigone non cessa di porre interrogativi di natura etica, filosofica, politico-giuridica. D’Annunzio invoca la sua presenza in una lirica di Alcyone chiamandola «Antigone dall’anima di luce», ed è così che la immaginiamo nel continuo rinnovarsi del suo destino. Chi s’innamora di Antigone, diceva il poeta Shelley, non sarà mai soddisfatto di nessun altro legame mortale.

Prevajalec, ki je rokopis sam oblikoval tako rekoč kot knjigo in ga opremil z najnujnejšim komentarjem, se je namreč zavestno odločil za prepesnitev, za pesniški in ne za filološki prevod; to je očitno tako iz njegovih »Pripomb k prevodu« kot tudi iz prve – in doslej edine – kritike prevoda, pisma njegovega mentorja Janeza Remica. Vzporedno s slovenskim je objavljeno tudi besedilo grškega izvirnika, rekonstruirano s pomočjo standardne Dain-Mazonove izdaje v zbirki Les Belles Lettres, kar bralcu omogoča boljši vpogled v Hribovškovo prevajalsko metodo.

Rokopisna oblika besedila je v natisu spremenjena v tem, da so imena govorečih oseb pomaknjena z levega roba med tekoče besedilo, dvopičja za njimi, ki uvajajo replike, pa so opuščena. Oštevilčenje, ki ga v rokopisu ni, je dodano za večjo preglednost besedila in za lažjo uporabo spremne študije. Številke strani so pomaknjene z vrha strani na dno. Ohranjene so oblike grških imen iz rokopisa (Zeus; Haimon; Polineikes; Teiresias; nominativi Antigone, Ismene, Evridike, Kreon), ki so odraz tedanjih pravopisnih norm, pa tudi nedorečenosti (npr. Dionizos, Pallada), a niso samo jezikovni in kulturni dokument časa, temveč dajejo besedilu značilen kolorit. V skrajno redkih primerih so bili potrebni lektorski popravki pri postavljanju ločil, pri čemer so bila upoštevana pravila iz časa, ko je prevod nastal. Prevajalčeve (redke) napake in lastne popravke »tehničnega« besedila (oštevilčenja strani) ta izdaja izpušča.

Prevajalec sam opozarja na posebnost zborskih partij in liričnih vložkov, ki jih je prevajal v rimah. Ti deli besedila (v Antigoni je to šest zborskih pesmi in dva komosa, žalostinki, ki ju izvajata izmenoma zbor in posamezen dramski lik) so bili izvorno namenjeni petju: po zgledu nekaterih uveljavljenih izdaj grških tragedij so v tej knjigi natisnjeni ležeče. Če so besede, ki jih je vodja zbora prvotno govoril (npr. verzi 178–181), prevedene v rimanih verzih, so v skladu s prevajalčevo predstavo prav tako natisnjene ležeče.

V knjigi je reproduciran odlomek iz Hribovškovega rokopisa, ki naj bralcu odkrije vidno sled pesnikovega največjega prevajalskega dela in mu tudi na ta način približa njegov svet.

Tinin Fenomenolojisi adlı eserde ise Hegel tinin kendilik bilincine ulaĢmasının fenomenal bilgi bakımından betimlemesini sunar. Tinin kendilik bilincine ulaĢma yolculuğundaki ilk aĢama dolaysızlığı içerisinde var olan tin olarak Antik Yunan Dünyası " dır. Antik Yunan dünyasında tinsel töz ile bireyin canlı bir bütünlüğü vardır ve bu henüz üzerine düĢünülmemiĢ verili bir gerçekliktir. Antik Yunan Tini hem tözsel hem de bireysel olanın dolaysız birliğidir; tam da bu sebeple henüz modern öznellik anlayıĢının olgunlaĢmamıĢ olduğu bir bireysellik bilincini ortaya koyar. Bu bilinç durumu antik Yunan tininin dolaysız birliği ya da güzel uyumunun dağılmasına sebep olacaktır. Eylem ile birlikte antik Yunan " daki güzel uyum çatıĢmaya doğru ilerler ve bu çatıĢmanın tarafları törel tözün güçlerinin edimsel savunucularıdır. Antik Yunan tininin iki tözsel kuvveti olan ilahi yasa ile insani yasanın doğal ve dolaysız savunucuları olan edimsel bireyler, eyleme geçtikleri anda birbirlerinin yıkımına doğru ilerlerler. Most contemporary political theorists who have interpreted Sophocles' Antigone have focused on the fearsome clash between Antigone and Creon. The relationship between Antigone and her weaker, more cautious sister Ismene has not garnered similar attention. This essay addresses this gap by revisiting the tantalizing possibility that Ismene played a more significant role in resisting Creon than has often been assumed. The essay shifts the analysis of Antigone, first, by illuminating the complex and fraught relationship between two women and emphasizing the political and legal challenges that they face together as women. Second, the essay shifts focus from vertical power relations—that is, between the individual and government—to horizontal power relations between disempowered outsiders. On this reading, Antigone reveals less about the downfall of a character than it does about the political power of the weak and disadvantaged.

The present essay will attempt to approach to Lacan´s (1959-1960/1992) interpretation of Antigone through Zizek´s (2009) theories about violence. I will use the notions of `objective´ and `subjective´ violence to analyse it within the sophoclean tragedy. The Antigone question, that shows the conflict between the individual and the community laws established by power, enlighten Zizek’s theories about contemporary violence in a capitalistic context. Zizek´s thought about it and Lacan´s approach to Antigone shared a fundamental attempt to overcome the moralistic reading of these questions. Avoiding this simplistic approach will be one of the goals of this essay.

Questo libro si chiede in che misura la temperie politica, psicologica, sociale, storica connotata dal terrorismo e dai terrorismi influenzi o condizioni il ripensamento, le riscritture, le messe in scena del mito di Antigone. Dalla letteratura di Antonio Tabucchi e Francesco Piccolo al cinema di Marco Bellocchio e Oliver Haffner, dalla satira di Dario Fo al teatro post-moderno di Yael Ronen, la figura di Antigone ricorre nell'immaginario e nella riflessione dagli anni '70 ad oggi e si intravede in filigrana nelle narrazioni della vicenda Moro, del pentitismo degli anni Ottanta, della guerra in Afghanistan; affiora quindi nelle questioni etiche poste dai corpi insepolti degli jihadisti e dalla crisi economica e identitaria dell' Europa attuale. Seguire questo filo porta a interrogarsi di nuovo sulle ragioni storiche del conflitto alla base della tragedia di Sofocle, ma soprattutto sul suo significato nel nostro presente.

In questo libro l'Antigone di Sofocle funge da pretesto per una riflessione critica su alcune implicazioni fondamentali dell'istituzione delle leggi – della loro produzione e della loro esecuzione – all'interno dei regimi democratici, nei quali, almeno in linea di principio, esse non sono autorizzate da nessuna fonte extrasociale. L'esplicitazione della genesi sociale delle leggi fa emergere in termini radicali il problema della loro giustificazione o legittimazione, il cui fondamento è da ricondurre esclusivamente alla responsabilità dei consociati. Il conflitto tra Antigone e Creonte non contrappone la ragione al torto, ma l'unilateralità di due ragioni o di due torti, tra i quali la messinscena tragica dimostra che scegliere non solo è impossibile ma non avrebbe neanche senso. La ricerca difficile d'una mediazione giuridica efficace, che il teatro tragico segnala come esigenza pressante, senza tuttavia indicare i modi e le forme del suo soddisfacimento, si precisa nel corso del libro come l'unica legittimazione dell'ordine costituito adeguata a una società democratica. Camus’ Meursault and Sophocles’ Antigone are both characters in literature who act in ways that require them to deliberately confront their own mortality. In both cases, their actions lead to their executions, requiring that they struggle with the meaning and fear of death.  ese two cases raise issues of hope, acceptance of the truth of the human condition, and the question of what di erence human action can make given the inevitability of death. I propose to examine both examples as a way of working through two possible stories of death. To set a frame, I begin with Hannah Arendt’s description of the fundamental levels of human activity and the di erent relation each activity has to death.

This paper explores, from a feminist post-structuralist perspective, the way in which gender power relations and specifically, how men and women are represented in the play Antigone, by Sophocles, in order to identify to what extent, then and still today, these representations contributed to, contested or influenced gender power-imbalances in society.

Latin American twenty-first-century Antigone-plays seem to follow a new pattern that distinguishes them from the long history of regional re-writings of the tragedy: they feature scenic strategies of repetitions and multiplications, whether of the Antigone character or of specific lines or scenes. I look at two Colombian plays that follow this trend: Carlos Satizábal’s Antígona y actriz (2005) and Patricia Ariza’s Antígona (2006). I argue that in both plays theatrical repetition displaces the centrality of the classic opposition between Antigone and Creon, and highlights instead the act of storytelling itself as a problematic site of representation. Both plays honor the struggle that real-life peasant women affected by the country’s six-decade-long armed conflict have to lead to tell their story to an urban audience. In the Colombian context, these Antigones speak to the translation of rural experience into urban experience.

En el presente trabajo se lleva a cabo un análisis de uno de los textos más influyentes de la literatura mexicana reciente, Antígona González (2012) de Sara Uribe. En un primer momento, se expone el contexto social, político y estético en el que la pieza de Uribe fue escrita, para después proceder a estudiar las estrategias textuales de que se sirve Uribe para generar una autoría colectiva, con especial atención a las aportaciones teóricas llevadas a cabo por Cristina Rivera Garza y su concepto de “desapropiación”. Por último, el artículo propone una interpretación de la obra tanto en sus aspectos formales como en su aspecto ético-político, desarrollando su vínculo con las propuestas de Judith Butler. El presente trabajo relaciona ambas dimensiones, al ubicar la obra en una tradición de escritura militante cuyo objetivo es llevar a cabo el duelo por los desaparecidos en la frontera norte de México.

L'écrivain Henry Bauchau a traversé tout le XXe s. sans cesser de s'intéresser au politique et à ce qu'il percevait comme des mouvements vers une possible libération aussi de be soi-même que des sociétés dominées. Il n'y a donc pas de rupture, après 1945, qui laisserait place à un auteur seulement préoccupé de lui-même, de psychanalyse et de formes nouvelles. Le grand roman 'Oedipe sur la route', qui ouvre sa dernière période, témoigne d'une sensibilité aiguë aux questions postcoloniales, notamment celles du nationalisme et de l'identité culturelle, aussi bien sur le mode de l'affirmation et de la résistance que sur le mode du métissage réaliste.

La traduzione dell'Edipo a Colono di Sofocle è un'avventura straordinaria, ed emozionante. Non solo perché con questa tragedia Sofocle chiude idealmente la vicenda terrena ed umana di Edipo, vicenda ch'egli aveva già narrato - limitatamente alle tragedie che ci sono pervenute - prima nell'Antigone, quindi nell'Edipo re. Ma anche, e soprattutto, perchè questa tragedia ci avvicina, come nessun'altra, all'uomo Sofocle, e in particolare a quel dialogo intimo che ogni uomo, e Sofocle in particolare, intrattiene con la morte, nell'attesa della propria morte. E Sofocle, ormai novantenne, sapeva di non dover attendere ancora a lungo per fare esperienza di quest'incontro.
Il personaggio di Edipo - in esso è naturale vedere lo stesso poeta - ingigantisce progressivamente nel corso della tragedia: è un percorso opposto a quello che Sofocle aveva delineato nell'Edipo re. Il vecchio dal passo incerto che incontriamo all'inizio della tragedia, guiderà egli stesso Teseo al luogo nel quale si compirà misteriosamente la sua eroizzazione. L'uomo che nel prologo si rivolge che timore e rispetto all'abitante di Colono, si rivolgerà da pari a pari al re di Atene, ed infine assurgerà tra gli dei.
Condivido, qui, una parte di quest'avventura: la traduzione del prologo (1-116) e della parodo (117-253). Il testo di riferimento, così come le note, sono quelli dell'edizione di Jebb.
La traduzione è 'ragionevolmente letterale', e le note sono limitate ad alcuni commenti grammaticali che possono aiutare il lettore nella comprensione del testo.

From the Introduction: "Greek tragedy is a kind ofscripture that teaches us by showing, not telling, what we need to know. I call it a scripture because it is a religious discourse about human beings and their relationships to the divine realm ofabundance and to the material world ofscarcity. But it is also drama, a scripted matrix of interpersonal words and actions, as human and social as any conversation in the audience. Like all drama, tragedy is about individuals, but it also speaks to public life — Thebes and Athens and Corinth are not just crowded places but living societies with their own crises, wounds, and needs. Oedipus himself is a gifted man, endowed with an intellectual power that exposes him to special dangers. But he is also the Everyman that Freud made him. Garnier a composé son Antigone (1570) en s’inspirant d’une part des Phéniciennes de Sénèque et de la Thebaïde de Stace, et d’autre part de l’Antigone de Sophocle. La cohérence de la pièce tient au fait que toutes les sources font apparaître un conflit entre les prétentions également légitimes des personnages. Si le tragique se définit comme ce qui est à la fois impossible et nécessaire, ces conflits insolubles entre des normes coexistantes sont proprement tragiques. Ils rappellent la complexité du système normatif auxquelles Garnier a été confronté dans son activité de magistrat. La composition d’Antigone est contemporaine de celle de La République (1576) de Jean Bodin : dans ces années charnières émerge l’idée que la loi positive doit exprimer la volonté du roi absolu. Pourtant, la doctrine juridique, qui place au sommet de la hiérarchie des normes le droit divin et le droit naturel, offre le moyen de contester la loi du roi.

In the "Spiritual Work of Art", the gods, not the humans, show up as the heroes of Greek tragedy. Given the way the gods are characterized in this section of the Phenomenology of Spirit, I argue further that the subject matter of ancient tragedy is not a particular situation in which one human meets his or her fate in a way that elicits fear and pity from the spectator. Rather, tragedy concerns the untenable nature and inevitable dissolution of the ethical world in general.

да ја спореди и објасни разликата во интерпретацијата на волјата на боговите која во грчката митологија никогаш не е унифицирана. Следствено на тоа се поставува тезата дека и двата лика кои се водени од сопствените верувања, чувства и интереси сами ја креираат сопствената судбина, а Софокле во преден план го става развојот на карактерите претставувајќи ни ги како два совршени ривали.

The usage of the word αύτονομία at line 821 of Antigone is unusual because it refers to the autonomy of a single person, whereas normally the word is applied to corporate situations.  The chorus uses it at the precise moment of Antigone's condemnation to death, and links it to her κλέος and praise - in essence according her cult hero status.

Članek se ukvarja z etičnim pomenom nenapisanih zakonov v stari grški religiji ter pri Antigoni. V ospredju naše interpretacije je branje Antigone pri Luce Irigaray. V drugem delu ponujamo primerjalno raziskavo o vlogi Savitri iz indijskega epa Mahabharata ter dokazujemo, da legendo o Savitri zaznamujejo podobni kozmični odnosi ali kozmični simboli kot versko ozadje Antigone.

A revised and corrected version of a paper that critically assesses Lacan's endeavor to show the limits of, and build upon, Kant's ethical philosophy by way of an analysis of Antigone and by attempting to show how Kant's ethical reasoning is formally consistent with the "philosophy" of the Marquis de Sade. The paper concentrates on Lacan's notion of "desire" as he applies it in his account of Antigone. It then undertakes a similar analysis but substitutes for "desire" Kant's analogous concept of an "end that is also a duty."
