This essay makes a case for reorientation in the controversially discussed matter of how the relationship between Orientalism and Zionism should be interpreted. It abandons the notion of convergence between both spheres, postulating instead that a tradition of downright resistance to Orientalism is inscribed into German literary Zionism. To exemplify the potential of this reorientation for new insights into both postcolonial and German-Jewish history, a discus- sion is provided of Theodor Herzl’s novel The Old New Land (1902), Felix Salten’s Neue Menschen auf alter Erde (1925), and Franz Kafka’s Schakale und Araber (1917).

Our time is characterized by a crisis of representational
practice, fuelled by unprecedented technological and economic changes on a global level. Narrative, therefore, takes a wide variety of forms. This course examines the aesthetics and techniques of film and literature from around the world, and analyses the masters of each art form. Through short stories and plays, we will study different ways a story can be told and the many exciting ways embedded "narratives" (or discourses) can be framed. Similarly, through films and film adaptations of great literary masterpieces, we will study how visual elements challenge the reader's imagination.


Specifically, we examine the relationship between meaning
and narrative structure. The course considers the tensions
between claims for originality and poetic license, between
producers and audiences, between fiction and reality, narrative and history, memory and representation. We will study representative theorists of narratology, such as J. Hillis Miller, Wolfgang Iser and Hayden White. Cutting-edge scholarship on film and the new media will also be introduced, such as Seymour Chatman, Rey Chow, as well as Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin's Remediation. In addition to becoming familiar with major issues in film studies and East-West comparative studies, students will acquire a working knowledge of narrative theory.

In “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses,” Louis Althusser proposed a complete rethinking of the category of the Subject. Despite the many critiques of Subjectivity that proliferated in France at the time, Althusser intended to salvage the concept of the Subject in order to address how a given ideology maintains its stranglehold on an individual in the absence of any external repressive apparatus (e.g. a police officer). This paper will assess Althusser’s achievement by way of immanent critique; rather than dispensing with Althusser’s theoretical framework, I will update it by adding two components that attempt to remedy its deficiencies. Those components reside in between the Subject and the ideological apparatuses that “capture” it. This mediating region is itself split into two concepts: 1) the Freudian death drive, or repetition automatism, which pertains to the composition of the Subject’s interior border, and 2) the phenomenological experience of that border, designated by the phrase “wounds in the sensorium”.  In order to approach the latter phenomenological dimension of ideological interpellation, I will take a seemingly roundabout, but necessary journey through the work of Walter Benjamin, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Franz Kafka.

Sound coming from outside the field of vision, from somewhere beyond, holds a privileged place in the Western imagination. When separated from their source, sounds seem to manifest transcendent realms, divine powers, or supernatural forces. According to legend, the philosopher Pythagoras lectured to his disciples from behind a veil, and two thousand years later, in the age of absolute music, listeners were similarly fascinated with disembodied sounds, employing various techniques to isolate sounds from their sources. With recording and radio came spatial and temporal separation of sounds from sources, and new ways of composing music.

Sound Unseen: Acousmatic Sound in Theory and Practice explores the phenomenon of acousmatic sound. An unusual and neglected word, "acousmatic" was first introduced into modern parlance in the mid-1960s by avant garde composer of musique concrète Pierre Schaeffer to describe the experience of hearing a sound without seeing its cause. Working through, and often against, Schaeffer's ideas, Brian Kane presents a powerful argument for the central yet overlooked role of acousmatic sound in music aesthetics, sound studies, literature, philosophy and the history of the senses. Kane investigates acousmatic sound from a number of methodological perspectives -- historical, cultural, philosophical and musical -- and provides a framework that makes sense of the many surprising and paradoxical ways that unseen sound has been understood. Finely detailed and thoroughly researched, Sound Unseen pursues unseen sounds through a stunning array of cases -- from Bayreuth to Kafka's "Burrow," Apollinaire to Zizek, music and metaphysics to architecture and automata, and from Pythagoras to the present -- to offer the definitive account of acousmatic sound in theory and practice.

The Doppelganger issue is caused by the denial of the self which is an unacceptable part of the society, this denial, which is called bad faith (mauvaise foi) leads to the demonizing and oppressing the inner self and causes the conflict between the selves.

“문학이라 불리는 이상한 제도”―데리다와 문학의 문제
그렇다면 데리다에게 ‘문학’이란 무엇인가? 문학 연구에 몸담아온 모든 이들에게 핵심적일 수밖에 없는 이 질문은 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스 이래의 서양 철학 전통 내에서도 끊임없이 반복하여 제기되어왔다. 이는 결국 문학적 질문이 아니라 철학적인 질문이다. 이 질문은 문학의 본질에 대한 진술을, 문학을 문학이 아닌 모든 것과 구별하는 요소를 추궁하기 때문이다. 따라서 “문학이란 무엇인가?”라는 질문은 “철학이란 무엇인가?”라는 질문과 분리될 수 없으며 문화, 정치, 윤리 혹은 역사를 포함한 모든 고려 속에 내포되어 있다.
이 책에서 데리다가 강조하는 바는 “문학이 하나의 제도”라는 점이다. 그에 따르면 “자체적으로 문학적인 텍스트란 없”으며, “문학은 자연적으로 혹은 머릿속에서 주어진 것이 아니라 역사적, 지리적으로 지도를 그릴 수 있는 사회적, 법적, 정치적 과정에 의해 생겨났다.” 특히 17세기 혹은 18세기 이래 서구 민주주의 국가들에서 경험해온 문학이라는 제도는, 우리 주변의 여러 언어적 실천 가운데서도 문학을 독특한 어떤 것으로 만드는 특징을 지니고 있다. 데리다는 바로 그 특이성을 강조한다. “관습과 규칙 등을 가진 역사적 제도로서의 문학, 그러나 또한 원칙적으로 모든 것을 말할 힘을 가진, 이러한 규칙을 어기고 이를 몰아냄으로써 자연과 제도, 자연과 관습법, 자연과 역사 사이의 전통적 차이점을 도입하고 발명하고 더 나아가 의문시하는 그러한 제도로서의 문학.”
이러한 의미에서 거의 최초와 다름없는 이 문학 선집이 갖는 의미는 각별하다고 할 수 있다. 서구의 사고방식을 가능하게 한 숨겨진 조건으로서 ‘문자’를 탐구하는 것이 바로 ‘해체’라 불리는 데리다의 작업이었고, 따라서 그의 작업은 서구 사상을 대표하는 구체적인 작품들에 밀착한 연구일 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 우리에게 잘 알려진 데리다의 ‘철학 텍스트 읽기’가 아닌 ‘문학 텍스트 읽기’ 작업을 한데 모은 이 책은, 이런 의미에서 난해하기 짝이 없는 ‘해체’란 현상을 이해하는 또 다른 길잡이가 되어줄 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 데리다 작품에 나타난 문학, 즉 문학 텍스트와 문학이라는 제도의 의미를, 그리고 문학에 있어서의 데리다 저작의 의미를 새롭게 생각해보는 계기를 마련해줄 것이다.

이렇듯 문학 텍스트에 대한 데리다의 글쓰기는 어떠한 관습적인 의미에서도 논평이나 비평, 해석이 아니다. 데리다의 글쓰기는 문학작품을 위치 짓거나 장악하거나 철저히 규명하거나 번역하거나 꿰뚫어보지 않는다. 문학에 대한 데리다의 텍스트는 문학적인 정도 이상으로 철학적인 것은 아니라 해도 여전히 철학적인 질문에 사로잡혀 있으며, 문학 텍스트에 의한 철학의 해체가 감지될 수 있는 방법을 찾는다. 그렇게 함으로써 문학에서 문학적인 것이 무엇인지를 전면에 내세운다. 문학이라는 단어를 글쓰기나 법과 같은 용어로 만드는 그 무엇, 문학이 속한 담론과 제도를 뒤흔들 수 있는 그 무엇 말이다.

Normative incomparability refers to cases in which A and B are, structurally speaking, comparable, but comparing A and B is (taken to be) prohibited on evaluative or moral grounds. Given that backdrop, the paper has three goals: first, it gives a more elaborated account of normative incomparability; second, it refers to literature, namely J.M. Coetzee’s novel Elizabeth Costello, to give a “think description” of a particular case in which we are confronted with normative claims about the possibility and (in)adequacy to compare; three, the paper aims at a tentative outlook regarding the demands on dealing philosophically with these kinds of severe evaluative, but particularly moral disagreements.

Nel suo film "The Trial" del 1962 il regista Orson Welles interpreta con sorprendente  penetrazione intuitiva  l'omonimo romanzo di Kafka, riproducendone le architetture esheriane e "l'angoscia senza forma". Un incubo del giovane Welles riportato da un suo biografo, le circostanze della produzione di "The Trial" e il suo contenuto, sono occasione per tracciare una narrativa delle esistenze sia del regista che dello scrittore, focalizzando le rispettive esperienze traumatiche ed esaminando  la loro peculiare creatività in termini di "posttraumatic growth".

In this article, I will discuss Benjamin's explanation of "negative theology" by focusing especially on Kafka's "The Castle" and "Before the Law" and examine the existing examples that lead Benjamin to do this definition. For this, I will go to his correspondence with Scholem and inquire about his thoughts on Kafka and how he evaluates him in terms of "negative theology" from what he wrote to his friend. From this point of view, I will conclude my study by discussing what it means to be before the door of the law and the metaphor of the door.

This essay extends an open philosophy with a philosophy of music education on soil. An open philosophy emerges from analysis of Kafka's parable " Before the Law. " I explore what " the law " might be, what it could mean for how people relate to " the law, " and how critiquing " the law " allows music teachers and learners to challenge the institutionalization of musical values. Extended with a metaphor of soil, music educators recognize " the law " is unsustainable and deserving skepticism. Institutions require continual skepticism. Through skepticism, ways of being and musicking together emerge.

GREGOR SAMSA IN THE SOVEREIGN DOUBLE BIND 
Many analyses of Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis proceed by treating key moments in the larger narrative as self-contained and symbolic of the modernist subject's powerlessness, solitude and futility and the apparent meaninglessness that these convey. Abundant evidence exists for such a reading, not least of which the tragic and increasingly isolated inner monologues Kafka composes. While any number of such scenes are in themselves poignant comments on Gregor's isolation and psychological torment, examining Gregor's relationships with the deputy director of the company for which he works, and with his family, will instead reveal a continuous and consistent theme of psychological, economic and physical abuse of Gregor. The scenes that best demonstrate this lend themselves well to a more political reading of the text, rife with meaning for, and resonance with, our present historical moment. Subject to the will of his father and that of the deputy director, Gregor becomes victim to the decisions these characters make regarding his destiny, decisions which take on a sovereign character, in the sense of the term elaborated by Agamben in Homo Sacer. I submit that reading the Metamorphosis as a detailed depiction of the ways in which such power can be exerted in the economic as well as the juridical realms will also reveal the correlations between the treatment of Gregor-as-insect and the treatments of so-called vagabonds and vagrants in early capitalist England. His recollections of life as a worker, his transformation and the violence that this transformation invites upon his body, his subsequent imprisonment in his room and finally his death are all moments that resemble the consequences inflicted upon those who transgress and/or exit the coercive dynamic capital exerts on one's life and labor.

In this piece, we will discuss what is posthuman in the writings of Kafka, and how his writing compares to that of the other writers classified under the title Posthumanism. The issue is whether Kafka's short story, A Report to an Academy (1988), is a posthumanist piece or not.

La burocrazia sconcerta non perché semplicemente aliena, bensì in quanto "aumenta" la realtà con cui interagiamo. A livello percettivo facciamo un salto di quantità e di qualità rispetto al mondo che ci circonda: la classe di oggetti che ci offre l'apparato amministrativo dilata il nostro orizzonte di esperienza, ponendoci a contatto con entità che non dovrebbero esistere. Ed è così che un certificato può far sì che noi - presenti in carne ed ossa davanti a un funzionario - non esistiamo; o che i morti, anziché starsene in pace, abbiano ancora dei doveri di cui render conto, perpetuandosi nell'aldiquà, al nostro fianco, come affaccendatissime esistenze protocollari. Questa situazione paradossale è stata colta con maestria da Franz Kafka attraverso acute analisi sociologiche travestite da enigmi letterari. Ma, per comprendere appieno il suo pensiero, occorre contestualizzarlo nell'ambito di un'articolata discussione su norma, violenza, apparato militare e stato d'eccezione. Ambito in cui teologia e diritto ammiccano l'un l'altra vicendevolmente e, in una spaesante promiscuità, s'intersecano e si confondono.

Der Aufsatz geht von der These aus, dass sich literarische Texte der Jahrhundertwende am ehesten aus dem Nebeneinander bzw. (vor allem in den 1900er Jahren) aus der Verbindung impressionistischer und symbolistischer Verfahren begreifen lassen. Diese Verfahren werden zunächst systematisch bestimmt. Danach wird an zwei Textbeispielen die Verwendung und Modifikation dieser Verfahren in Franz Kafkas frühem Sammelband "Betrachtung" beschrieben.

While the father figure in Das Urteil unequivocally occupies the role of judge, he has been relegated in criticism to the status of a defendant on trial for murder, accused of sentencing his own son to death. On few other matters, in fact, does one find such widespread consensus in Kafka studies. In this paper, the author challenges this conventional reading by asserting it is the father – rather than the protagonist George Bendemann – who is the victim of injustice. After establishing that the text is narrated almost entirely from Georg’s perspective, the author provides a reading of the tale as Georg’s testimony, identifying a number of inconsistencies and outright obfuscations by which the protagonist seeks to conceal his guilt.

The relationship of philosophy with Kafka’s oeuvre is complex. It has been argued that Kafka’s novels and stories defy philosophic extrapolation; conversely, it has also been suggested that precisely the tendency of Kafka’s writings to elude discursive solution is itself a philosophical tendency, one that is somehow contributing to a wiser relationship of human beings with language. These matters are the focus of the proposed volume on Philosophy and Kafka.

The proposed collection brings together essays that interrogate the relationship of philosophy and Kafka, and offer new and original interpretations. The volume obviously cannot claim completeness, but it partially does justice to the multiplicity of philosophical issues and philosophical interpretations at stake.

This variety informs the composition of the volume itself. A number of essays focus on specific philosophical commentaries on Kafka’s work, from Adorno’s to Agamben’s, from Arendt’s to Benjamin’s, from Deleuze and Guattari’s to Derrida’s. A number of essays consider the possible relevance of certain philosophical outlooks for examining Kafka’s writings: here Kafka’s name goes alongside those of Socrates, Kant, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Buber, Heidegger, Blanchot, and Levinas. Finally, a number of essays consider Kafka’s writings in terms of a specific philosophical theme, such as communication and subjectivity, language and meaning, knowledge and truth, the human/animal divide, justice, and freedom. In all contributions to the volume, such themes, motifs, and interpretations arise. To varying degrees, all essays are concerned with the relationship of literature and philosophy, and thus with the philosophical significance of Kafka’s writings.

Kafka created loneliness, on one hand, to support the need of his work and, on the other hand, as an exclusion of the rule of Law. As such loneliness is a troubled and ambivalent existential phenomenon lived at times as sheltering and threatening, as a salvation and a damnation.
