Theory and History of Architectural Drawing

This is a review of facsimile editions of two architects' sketchbooks, Eduardo Souto de Moura and Wang Shu. One factor in the staying power
of the sketch is its immediacy, another is its physicality. In a world in which we increasingly interact through various technological interfaces, in which architecture is mostly created virtually – before it has to interact with the messy reality of the site – the sketch can be seen as an intimate and individual protest against the prevailing norm. The two sketchbooks, Eduardo Souto de Moura – Sketchbook No. 76, and Wang Shu– Imagining the House, are examples of an architectural process in which hand-drafting still has a place.

En este libro se analiza un conjunto ejemplar de dibujos de la Modernidad que han llegado a formar parte del imaginario de muchos arquitectos. En sucesivos capítulos se aborda el cambio en el modo de dibujar de Le Corbusier antes y después de su viaje a Oriente; las influencias recibidas por Louis Kahn en los primeros años de su ejercicio profesional; las corrientes gráficas en la representación de la ciudad en Estados Unidos a comienzos de la década de los treinta; las técnicas de dibujo predominantes en el periodo de entreguerras en Alemania; la difusión de las nuevas ideas a través de las exposiciones de arquitectura; el modo en que Gordon Cullen analizaba y representaba el paisaje urbano; el impacto gráfico de la revista The Architectural Review; y los apuntes realizados por Joaquín Vaquero y Luis Moya en Nueva York en 1930.
El título del libro está tomado de la obra de teatro La Tempestad, en la que William Shakespeare afirma que todo lo que acontece en la escena no es más que una ficción, una ilusión, algo irreal: "we are such stuff as dreams are made on". Lo mismo podría decirse de los dibujos de arquitectura; no son más que meros sustitutos que nos permiten recordar, imaginar o soñar otra realidad.

El análisis gráfico es una herramienta muy útil en la restauración de monumentos, pero en realidad su uso está muy restringido. Lo que habitualmente se realiza, en todo caso, son análisis Implícitos en los propios planos de levantamiento, pero los dibujos específicamente analíticos no suelen trazarse salvo en casos muy evidentes o absolutamente imprescindibles.

Twenty years ago the British architect and urban designer Gordon Cullen died, without Spanish journals paying any particular attention to his legacy.  As 2014 sees Cullen’s centenary, this article is intended to be a small homage to his work, and in particular to the genesis of his book Townscape.  Thanks to its excellent drawings, this work has over the course of time become a classic in architectural literature.

Hace veinte años fallecía el arquitecto y dibujante inglés Gordon Cullen, sin que las revistas españolas prestaran especial atención a su legado. Aprovechando que en 2014 se cumplió el centenario de Cullen, rendimos con este artículo un pequeño homenaje a su obra, y en especial a la génesis de su libro Townscape, que gracias a sus acertados análisis gráficos ha llegado a convertirse con el paso del tiempo en un clásico de la literatura arquitectónica.

During the last five centuries, a great number of ingenious drawing instruments that allow to divide a segment into a fixed number of equal parts have been made by several skilful craftsmen.
Despite the apparent difference between the forms and the functioning of these instruments, at a deeper exame they all reveal their nature as kinematisms that apply the geometrical properties of Thales’ Theorem (as it’s called in Italy) and its corollaries.
Many of these instruments, such as the Proportional Compasses, the Sector or the Sectograph, are used to work out some others drawing or mathematical problems. Some of them, such as the Spacing Dividers, are used just to divide a segment into equal parts.
Even if the most used tecniques for dividing a segment are very simple and they need just simple instruments as dividers, these drawing devices are very important in drawing history.
They enable to reveal and to interpretate the degree of self awarenees that drawing matters could reach during the history of the last five centuries and they show how narrow were the links between the mathematics and the world of geometrical and architectonic drawing.

Este libro trata de cómo se reflejan las ideas y las realidades arquitectónicas sobre un plano gráfico. El dibujo de arquitectura se examina desde una perspectiva teórica, al tiempo que se ofrece un breve repaso histórico de sus ejemplos más significativos.

Los arquitectos tienen tres formas de expresar sus ideas y de comunicarlas a los demás: el lenguaje natural, el lenguaje gráfico y el lenguaje arquitectónico. El primero corresponde a lo que habitualmente entendemos como sus ‘escritos’; el segundo tiene que ver con sus ‘dibujos’; y el tercero hace referencia a sus ‘obras’. En este libro se estudia precisamente ese lenguaje intermedio que es el dibujo de arquitectura.

Este lenguaje gráfico posee rasgos peculiares que lo hacen trascender los simples aspectos técnicos o artísticos para alcanzar la categoría de un verdadero ‘sistema gráfico’ específico para la representación de la arquitectura.

A lo largo de las páginas siguientes, el lector descubrirá un auténtico esfuerzo por centrar el tema en sus dimensiones propias, huyendo tanto de las tentaciones estéticas de ‘el arte por el arte’, como de algunas aproximaciones estérilmente utilitarias de la geometría descriptiva.

Con ello se pretende poner al alcance de los estudiantes, los arquitectos y todos aquellos interesados en temas gráficos y arquitectónicos una útil herramienta de investigación que les permita abordar, de una manera general y ordenada, el estudio de los diversos aspectos del dibujo de arquitectura, esa «forma expresa de todas las formas inteligibles y sensibles que da luz al intelecto y vida a las actividades».

Para los amantes del dibujo arquitectónico, el presente libro será otra excusa más para seguir escudriñando inquisitivamente esos trozos de papel donde siempre se han reflejado las sutilezas creativas de la genialidad arquitectónica.

El levantamiento arquitectónico es uno de los grandes temas dentro del dibujo de arquitectura. Tuvo su origen en el interés de los arquitectos renacentistas por las ruinas romanas, pero con el tiempo se extendió a todo tipo de arquitectura con la intención de conservar una completa documentación gráfica de los edificios considerados de algún interés.

Las obras de arquitectura se presentan ante nosotros con unas formas definidas y tienen una imagen que puede ser real o únicamente gráfica, dependiendo de que se hayan construido o se hayan quedado sobre el papel. Este libro trata de cómo las ideas y las realidades arquitectónicas se presentan sobre un plano gráfico. El dibujo de arquitectura se examina desde una perspectiva teórica, al tiempo que se ofrece un breve repaso histórico de sus ejemplos más significativos. Con ello se pretende poner al alcance de los estudiantes, los arquitectos y todos aquellos interesados en temas gráficos y arquitectónicos una útil herramienta de investigación que les permita abordar de una manera general y ordenada el estudio de los diversos aspectos del dibujo de arquitectura. La presente tesis doctoral nace como consecuencia de una labor docente e investigadora en el campo del dibujo de arquitectura llevada a cabo en los seis últimos años dentro de la Segunda Cátedra de Análisis de Formas Arquitectónicas de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid.
Su objetivo es la identificación de las relaciones que se establecen entre las diversas categorías gráficas del dibujo de arquitectura y las categorías propiamente arquitectónicas.
Para llegar al estudio de tales relaciones se buscó una teoría que permitiera examinar de un modo coherente y homogéneo los aspectos comunes de ambas disciplinas. Como esta labor no estaba realizada dentro de la esfera del dibujo de arquitectura, se ha planteado una estructura que abarque de un modo integral todos los aspectos que atañen a la representación gráfica arquitectónica.
El cuerpo principal de la tesis, por tanto, lo constituye el desarrollo y exposición de una teoría del dibujo de arquitectura que comprende su definición, la identificación de sus características principales y el establecimiento de unas dimensiones que permitan su estudio con carácter general.
Una vez comprobada la pertinencia de tal estructura, se ha puesto en relación con la propia teoría de la arquitectura y se han investigado las conexiones que se pueden establecer entre ellas de un modo estructural.
Las conclusiones más importantes a las que se ha llegado consisten en la constatación de las dificultades existentes para poder encontrar una relación directa entre estilo arquitectónico y estilo gráfico, y, por el contrario, la clara evidencia de que tales relaciones existen entre las categorías o dimensiones de la arquitectura y las categorías gráficas del dibujo arquitectónico. Estas relaciones consisten básicamente en que el dibujo posee la capacidad de representar todos y cada uno de los valores arquitectónicos en base a las posibilidades de variación de sus dimensiones gráficas El dibujo es, por tanto, el medio ideal no sólo para describir la arquitectura, sino también –y especialmente– para poner de manifiesto sus valores esenciales.

Abstract:
Dealing with Gordon Cullen’s ideas in the decade of the fifties refers us to his articles in the magazine “The Architectural Review” and the campaign orchestrated by its publishers to defend the ideas of Townscape applied to urban design and New Towns. The articles by Cullen always included masterful drawings through which he managed to synthesis and transmit his concepts to the readers, which were not always easy to describe in words. This paper analyses his graphic proposal for a possible New Town located on a meander of the River Thames, next to the small town of Marlow. This idea was never actually built, although Gordon Cullen tried to put forward an alternative to urbanism in 1950 and the architecture of New Towns that were being created in the English countryside.

Architectural drawings can be problematic for traditional archives. Unlike paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts, which are accessioned, architectural sketches (and in some cases, drawings) may not. They can be the flotsam and jetsam in an archival terra incognita. Even at the well-organized Centro Carlo Scarpa at Treviso, for example, I’ve encountered uncatalogued or mis-attributed drawings, absent identifying nomenclature on virtual scraps of paper.

Family-owned archives present their own unique challenges. While visiting the apartment Scarpa shared with his wife Nini, at the Villa Palazzetto in Monselice, for example, longtime client and Scarpa friend, Aldo Businaro (who was developing his own archive) opened the drawer of a bedside nightstand. In mid-sentence, he began pulling out A4 sheets covered with Scarpa sketches –heretofore unknown to Businaro. Discovering Scarpa drawings is one thing; access to collections is another matter.

When I began researching landscape and garden in the oeuvre of Scarpa two decades ago, I had entry to fewer than 1,000 original drawings: the Castelvecchio archives at Verona, the Fondazione Querini-Stampalia, and the private collections of Guido Pietropoli, Arrigo Rudi, and Aldo Businaro. The remainder, more than 20,000 graphic works of various types and sizes, were stored in the professional office of Tobia and Afra Scarpa in Montebelluna, where they presented Tobia and his then partner/wife Afra, with birthright and burden. In large part, because of this onus on the Scarpas, and the shadow cast by the father on the work of the son, access to the drawings was limited to a handful of former associates and academics. These are the graphic documents that since 2006, constitute the bulk of the collection at the Archivio di Stato di Treviso.

The timing of my first research visit to the Museo Castelvechio archive in 1998, would have been poor had I come to see only the famous “factures,” as Marco Frascari calls them in Eleven Exercises, of Cangrande’s new setting, and Scarpa’s exuberant details. Most were out for cleaning in preparation for the 1999 exhibition at the CCA. Fortunately, my interest lay
in the flotsam and jetsam.

The notion of “looking around,” is anathema to archivists. Yet, owing to the nature of my topic, it was imperative that I did just that. I had come to the Castlevecchio, after all, to research the garden that the museum’s director Licisco Magagnato, who had hired and worked with Carlo Scarpa, insisted in his essay in the Opera completa, was not a garden at all.

The tradition of stereotomy developed in the different Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula between the late XIV and the early XV century will allow to materialize in stone the new Renaissance system which had arrived from Italy. This phenomenon, which represents, without a doubt, one of the greatest Spanish contributions to the “a la Antigua” architecture, will follow two different ways: one, derived from the construction techniques developed in the building of ribbed vaults, and the other one based on the carving and assembly of “piezas enterizas”.




La tradición estereotómica desarrollada en los diferentes reinos cristianos de la Península Ibérica desde finales del siglo XIV y comienzos de la centuria siguiente permitirá afrontar la materialización en piedra del nuevo sistema renacentista llegado desde Italia. Este fenómeno, que constituye, sin lugar a dudas, una de las mayores aportaciones españolas a la arquitectura “a la antigua”, se abordará a partir de dos vías sensiblemente diferentes: una, derivada de las técnicas constructivas desarrolladas en el volteo de las bóvedas de crucería, y otra, basada en la labra y el ensamblado de “piezas enterizas”.





La tradizione stereotomica sviluppata nei vari regni cristiani della Penisola Iberica tra la fine del XIV secolo e gli inizi del secolo successivo permetterà di affrontare la materializzazione in pietra del nuovo sistema rinascimentale giunto dall’Italia. Questo fenomeno, che rappresenta, senza alcun dubbio, uno dei maggiori contributi spagnoli all’architettura “a la antigua”, seguirà due vie profondamente differenti: una, derivata dalle tecniche costruttive sviluppate nella costruzione di volte a crociera, e l’altra basata sulla lavorazione e l’assemblaggio di “piezas enterizas”.

De acuerdo con la idea del canon occidental, se trata de los dibujos más representativos o conocidos de la arquitectura del Movimiento Moderno. Se seleccionan diez dibujos que podrían formar parte de un museo imaginario de los dibujos de arquitectura más conocidos por la mayoría de los estudiosos.

La arquitectura como hecho material va unida a la historia del hombre. Su consideración como hecho cultural lleva aparejado su estudio como una disciplina en sí misma, y en la materialización de ese estudio el dibujo ocupa un lugar privilegiado. Poner de manifiesto la existencia de un hilo conductor gráfico en el conjunto de conocimientos sobre la arquitectura constituye el propósito de la presente comunicación.

Neben ihren bedeutsamen Altbeständen an historischen Drucken und Manuskripten bewahrt die Herzog August Bibliothek auch einen eher weniger bekannten Bestand an bemerkenswerten Handzeichnungen des 16. bis 19. Jahrhunderts auf. Darunter finden sich zahlreiche Planzeichnungen und Darstellungen zu bau- und architekturbezogenen Themen, die im Verlauf der langen Geschichte der ehemaligen fürstlichen Sammlungen auf unterschiedlichste Weise Eingang in die Bestände der Bibliothek fanden. Sie liefern nicht nur wertvolle Einblicke in die lokale Bau- und Architekturgeschichte im Fürstentum Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, sondern zeigen auch die besonderen Hintergründe und Rahmenbedingungen auf, unter denen das Medium der Ingenieurs- und Architekturzeichnung im europäischen Kontext des Wissensaustausches zwischen den Höfen verwendet wurde. Die Publikation führt in diese Bestände ein und schildert anhand ausgewählter Einzelblätter und Bestandsgruppen anschaulich den besonderen dokumentarischen und künstlerischen Wert, den diese Zeichnungen als unikale Quellen und Zeugnisse europäischer Kulturgeschichte über Wolfenbüttel und Braunschweig hinaus genießen.

The primacy of vision within western culture, metaphorically and literally, has many sources and trajectories – from Plato’s cave to the Edenic garden. Genesis 3: 4-5, recounts “And the serpent said unto the woman...God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall [se]e as gods...”. In verses 6 and 7 the reader learns “And when the woman saw that the tree...was pleasant to the eyes...a tree to make one wise, she took of the fruit...and her husband with her....  And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked....”  The lens of Judeo-Christian theology typically filters most contemporary perspectives of “the fall.”  Yet, it may prove fruitful to consider for once the serpent’s point of view.  The original biblical humans in the first garden fell from grace, not because of what they ate or saw, but because of the way they saw.  The ability “to see as gods,” to quote the serpent, was less the by-product of having fallen, but rather the very thing coveted – that is, the ability to see what is hidden from the outer eye.  From Genesis to the Enlightenment, seeing that which is not visible to the naked eye often was associated with a transgression, in this case, of divine law. Artists, architects, alchemists, and astronomers were (and still are) constantly searching for an inner-vision establishing, as Ivan Illich has put it, “a new type of transgression.” This visual transgression is the focus of this paper.

Methodological research into the paradoxical relationship between architecture and people: the urban artifact is a man-made object and precedes man, and they both have their own histories of different durations. This has consequences for both 'man' and 'architecture'. Both quantities have to be redefined theoretically with respect to their daily meanings and cannot - as often happens for the sake of convenience - be projected back onto the past but also in the making of future policy. The history of architectural thought is therefore relevant to transcend a social science interpretation.

Methodologisch onderzoek naar de paradoxale verhouding tussen architectuur en mensen: het stedelijk artefact is een door-de-mens-gemaakt-object én gaat vooraf aan de mens ze kennen beide eigen geschiedenissen van verschillende duur. Dit heeft consequenties voor zowel 'de mens' als 'de architectuur. Beide grootheden moeten ten opzichte van hun dagelijkse betekenissen theoretisch geherdefinieerd worden en kunnen niet - zoals gemakshalve vaak gebeurt, terug projecterend op het verleden maar ook in het maken van toekomstig beleid. De geschiedenis van het architectonisch denken is daarom relevant om een sociaalwetenschappelijke duiding te kunnen overstijgen.

El presente texto acomete un recorrido a lo largo de algunas de las relaciones que se establecen entre Arquitectura y Dibujo, consideradas fundamentales para cualquier aproximación a la arquitectura dibujada.
Este acercamiento se produce desde dos vías: la de la autoría, acometida por el autor, el arquitecto y la de la mirada, acometida por el lector, el arquitecto-dibujante, que tras leer perceptivamente, bajo su atenta mirada, arquitecturas ajenas, las dibuja.
Se distingue entre el dibujo de la arquitectura que es, ya, realidad arquitectónica
y el dibujo como anticipación y tránsito hacia la arquitectura que aún no es, que será. El dibujo y la arquitectura se aproximan, así, de dos maneras diametralmente opuestas: una que, mediante la percepción, produce dibujos de lo ya existente, estableciéndose vínculos diversos entre ambas realidades, y la otra, que se sumerge en el dibujo utilizándolo como conformador de una realidad futura, hasta su completa definición. La segunda de las maneras enunciadas tiene lugar a lo largo del proceso de producción de la arquitectura, labor genuina del arquitecto, mientras que la primera carece de nomenclatura como ejercicio de una profesión específica.
Arquitectos y dibujantes, podría decirse. Pero el arquitecto, en ambos casos, dibuja, tanto si es autor –arquitecto– de la arquitectura que gesta como si es dibujante de arquitecturas ajenas.
Arquitecturas: de Bramante, el Templete de San Pietro in Montorio; de Utzon, la Ópera de Sydney; de Le Corbusier, la Villa le Lac y de Schinkel, el proyecto para Palacio Real en la Acrópolis, nos acompañan a lo largo de este recorrido desde la autoría. Dibujos de Michael Graves, Louis Kahn, Eero Saarinen y Le Corbusier muestran algunas de sus lecturas hacia arquitecturas ajenas, sus particulares miradas –instruidas, educadas, formadas– desde dentro de la disciplina, desde la arquitectura.

The paintings and drawings of the architect Louis Kahn were catalogued in a book by Jan Hochstim (1991), which allowed those interested in his graphic work to study them in greater depth in later publications. This essay is intended to show possible influences upon certain drawings by Kahn from the lithographs of Louis Lozowick, an artist who was very well known in the early 1930s because of his drawings of the American Scene

Although studies on Le Corbusier appear to have covered almost all the topics possible, strange though it may seem, the few visits he made to Britain have still not been investigated in detail. A recent publication under the title Le Corbusier and Britain at first sight appeared to cover this gap, but the book in fact concentrated solely on the reception of the Swiss architect in England, as seen through an anthology of texts given over to critical reviews of his writings or comments on his work. The present paper is intended to provide further details, especially on the basis of unpublished letters between Le Corbusier and Wells Coates from 1938, of letters between the architect and his family, and of projects included in his complete works.

Aunque los estudios sobre Le Corbusier parecen haber agotado casi todos los temas posibles, por extraño que resulte están todavía por estudiar las pocas visitas que realizó a Inglaterra. Una reciente publicación titulada Le Corbusier and Britain parecía que iba a cubrir esta laguna, pero el libro se ocupa únicamente de la recepción del arquitecto suizo en Inglaterra a través de una antología de textos dedicados a la recensión de sus escritos o comentarios a sus obras. Con el presente artículo se pretende aportar algunos datos, en especial a partir de cartas inéditas cursadas entre Le Corbusier y Wells Coates en 1938, del epistolario entre el primero y su familia, y de los proyectos recogidos en sus Obras Completas.

Some time ago the author made an attempt, by means of an analogy with Darwinian processes of adaptation to the environment and the success of species better fitted to it, to explain how images change and adjust to the various functions or social demands assigned to them in each historical era.  However, this analogy proved somewhat insufficient, as the world of images requires more detailed explanations.  So, in these days when ecology has attracted a majority interest, it seems more appropriate to adopt this paradigm and refer to an ecology of images.

The contemporary model of the Design Studio is constantly being tested and revised, before a rising heterodoxy of programs and methods. As a key, it is proposed the retrieval of John Ruskin’s essay 'The Seven Lamps of Architecture'. Written in 1849, the seven principles aimed at rescuing, in an almost primitive way, Architecture as an Art that enlightens the remaining ones. It returns to the example of Venice’s medieval stones to go forward on the symbolic indefiniteness of the industrial age, alerted by Pugin when in 'Contrasts' (1836) the verticality of industrial chimneys competed with the towers of the cathedrals. Ruskin’s lamps would indicate the modern way for the total artwork by William Morris. With Morris, design would be a part of a single process from concept to work, anticipating Bauhaus’s Modern Design. To Ruskin, the light for architecture came from Sacrifice, Truth, Power, Beauty, Life, Memory and finally Obedience. Morality was the colour of Ruskin’s light. Sixteen years ago, the magazine 'Assemblage' dedicated an issue to Ruskin. As guest editor, Jennifer Bloomer started saying 'Ruskin is out of fashion' (1997, p.8). Accused of being anti-modern, ignoring spatial organization in favour of delirious ornaments, Ruskin is possibly still out of fashion. His distrust on progress, as a salvific end to happiness, positions him very close to the times we are living and perhaps that is why it is so compelling to revisit him. Following, we will risk 'Seven Lamps of Architectural Design'. Differently from Ruskin’s light, the light we propose is not meant to be absolute, or strictly ideological. Ultimately it justifies itself when the path of research into design is yet submerged in obscurity. The light of research by design is multi-coloured: is it individual, subjective, phenomenological, collective, analytical or even scientific? Hence, what research does the Architectural Design want?

Wer entwirft, versucht dem Unbekannten eine Form zu geben, er oder sie baut eine – durch graphische Repräsentationen und Modelle vermittelte – Brücke ins Nichts. Im modernen Sprachgebrauch benennt das »Entwerfen« nahezu alle Praktiken, die zum Einsatz kommen, wenn Bilder, Architekturen oder Maschinen projektiert werden. Die Beiträge des Bandes beschäftigen sich mit der Geschichte und Theorie dieser Papier- und Modellabenteuer und untersuchen die Modi des entwerfenden Handelns, also jene Verfahrensweisen, die im Gebrauch der Instrumente und Modelle entwickelt werden.
Dabei erkunden die hier versammelten Portraits von Entwurfswerkzeugen die Exteriorität des Gestaltens, Bildens und Denkens in thematischer wie methodischer Hinsicht: zum einen in Bezug auf den Begriff des Werkzeugs, der einer kritischen Revision unterzogen wird; zum anderen in Bezug auf den Begriff des Entwerfens als einer Praxis, die den Künstler, Architekten, Ingenieur und Wissenschaftler, ja ganz allgemein das zukunftsoffene Subjekt der Neuzeit, kennzeichnet und begründet.

This exploration of the role of imaginal bodies in architectural design begins with the work of a pupil and is followed by an analysis of his teacher.  In both drawing and construction, these architects establish a dialogue between bodies and buildings through a phenomenological reduction of body-movement and body-image.  Using the lessons learned from the body -- particularly the body of the mime -- as a means of apprehending space and form, the Italian architect Valeriano Pastor situates the traditional image of “a body within a body” in a contemporary architectural practice.  Pastor’s graphic manner of evoking the body of the mime in order to provoke the design of a building is much indebted to the work of Carlo Scarpa, with whom Pastor studied and practiced.  We explore the drawings of Pastor and Scarpa in terms of how each architect engages the form and physicality of the human body within their own architectural production.

Laddove i progressi nel campo della tecnologia dell'immagine rendono disponibili monitor, schermi e touch-screen con risoluzione sempre maggiore-nei quali la misura di ogni singolo pixel sembra ridursi sino alla soglia della effettiva visibilità-la cultura visuale contemporanea, soprattutto nel cam-po ludico e videoludico, conserva ancora oggi uno spiccato interesse per tipologie di raffigurazione a bassa risoluzione in cui la riconoscibilità del singolo picture element costituisce il fondamento di ogni cifra estetica. La storia della formazione delle immagini digitali-le cui origini si giovano di acquisizioni tardo otto-centesche nel campo dell'ottica e della pittura-si dipana tra gli anni Sessanta e Novanta del secolo scorso attraverso continui rimandi e contaminazioni tra le arti figurative e le più avanzate ricerche nel campo dell'informatica. Queste immagini di recente concezione, organizzate su fitte matrici di ele-menti quadrati, a ben vedere trovano addentellati nelle antiche tradizioni artigianali del mosaico ma ancor di più delle differenti tecnologie tessili le quali mostrano una strettissima analogia concettuale con le tecniche informatiche di supporto all'immagine. Una riflessione che utilizzi il disegno come strumento per cogliere i legami tra queste immagini di natura diversa può rendere evidente come i più moderni low res media mostrino una connessione diretta con strutture visuali maturate attraverso la pratica manifatturiera. The aim of this contribution is to show how the perspective drawing, using soft graphite Pencils, Wolff’s Carbon Pencils or Charcoal was the most common technique of drawing and the most emblematic in the interwar period, during the Twenties and the Thirties. We offer some explanations on the spread of this technique and show some drawings by German architects, like Hans Poelzing and Dominikus Böhm.

In recent decades, architecture has persistently engaged with defining its relationship to digitization. The practice of architectural drawing has often been at the centre of this discussion, which has questioned its relevance by putting emphasis on the ability of digital visualization to produce simulations of spaces (Mitchell 1989; Carpo 2011; Graves 2012). This chapter examines the contested relationship between the mediation of architectural representations and the unmediated built in order to interrogate and define the value and nature of the virtual in architectural design. Through a critical review of mediation across visual culture, digital culture and architectural theory, the chapter introduces the concept of the ‘architectural virtual’ to define architecture’s own ability to produce architectural spaces, beyond and before the built or the digital.

The architectural virtual reframes the discussion of architecture’s digital turn, placing emphasis on drawing’s ability to operate between the abstraction of representation and embodied physical experience. The text reframes the supposed contradiction between systems of mediation such as language and the immediacy of experience to address and clarify the relationship between architectural drawing as a systematic language, and the digital claim to virtualisation as an effect of simulation, considering the architectural virtual through the idea of utopic texts as a spatial plays that entails a mode of situated experience (Marin 1984). Drawing from post-structuralist discourse, this research situates architectural drawing in the context of utopic visions within and beyond architecture through an understanding of language as a spatial condition of subjectivity rather than a purely referential representation (Derrida 1997; Lefebvre 1991).

Tracing the relationship between language and experience from the introduction of digital virtuality in William Gibson’s Neuromancer (1984), to the architectural utopias of the 1960s as drawn by Italian architectural group Superstudio, the chapter argues, that in both analogue and digital realms of design, architecture always emerges through a mediation that calls into question not only the media at hand, but also the very definition of architecture’s own claim upon the virtual before the real/built.
