Empathy Circles are a hands on, walking the talk, empathy practice. The circles are based in science from many different disciplines such as psychology, neuroscience, biology, philosophy and arts (i.e. dance and literature). When developing the empathy circles, we did not want to get fussy over the term while getting distracted from the real important outcomes of the volumes of books, scientific studies and practices developed. We therefore decided to take a blended approach to empathy and started to actually practice in the empathy circles what all these different disciplines had to say about it. We blended science and practice to both decipher what empathy looks and feels like as well as figure out what works and what does not work in practice. Combining the different disciplines lead us to propose five phases of empathy: Self-empathy, mirrored empathy, reflective empathy, imaginative empathy and empathic creativity or -action. At the core of these five phases of empathy are different levels of synchronicity between two or more people.

Empathy is considered the basis of moral action. But if we examine this more carefully, the ability to »empathize with other people« proves itself to be a prerequisite for deliberate humiliation and cruelty. Additionally, even well-meaning compassion has many unintended consequences. It is for these reasons that we must investigate especially the dark, hitherto repressed aspects of empathy in order to achieve a better society.

This chapter argues that emotion recognition is a skill.  A skill perspective on emotion recognition draws attention to underappreciated features of this cornerstone of social cognition. Skills have a number of characteristic features.  For example, they are improvable, practical, and flexible.  Emotion recognition has these features as well.  Leading theories of emotion recognition often draw inadequate attention to these features.  The chapter advances a theory of emotion recognition that is better suited to this purpose.  It proposes that emotion recognition involves scripts. Emotion scripts describe how people are likely to behave in different emotional contexts. Scripts can be improved with the addition of richer social knowledge, they are practical in that they describe and guide social interaction, and they are flexible because they must accommodate that fact that emotions have different behavioral impact depending on the agents involves and the circumstances at play.  Learning to recognize emotions through scripts qualifies as a skill.

In The Dark Sides of Empathy, Fritz Breithaupt contends that people often commit atrocities not out of a failure of empathy but rather as a direct consequence of over-identification and a desire to increase empathy. Even well-meaning compassion can have many unintended consequences, such as intensifying conflicts or exploiting others.

Empathy plays a central part in a variety of highly problematic behaviors. From mere callousness to terrorism, exploitation to sadism, and emotional vampirism to stalking, empathy all too often motivates and promotes malicious acts. After tracing the development of empathy as an idea in German philosophy, Breithaupt looks at a wide-ranging series of case studies—from Stockholm syndrome to Angela Merkel's refugee policy and from novels of the romantic era to helicopter parents and murderous cheerleader moms—to uncover how narcissism, sadism, and dangerous celebrity obsessions alike find their roots in the quality that, arguably, most makes us human.

This qualitative study investigated the lived experiences of highly sensitive persons (HSPs) to better understand the way they experience careers.  Sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) is the underlying personality trait and is present in approximately 20 percent of the population, equally distributed across gender and racial lines.  SPS is considered a non-normative personality trait in some Western societies and subcultures.  Thus, many HSPs experience difficulty finding an appropriate match between innate temperament and career.   
This qualitative research perspective employed semi-structured interviews with 35 participants recruited through social media web sites and snowball sampling.  Participants in the study were primarily from the U.S., but also from five foreign countries.  Participants were chosen based on answers to a recruitment questionnaire and Elaine Aron’s HSP Self-Test.  Major findings reveal a complex, interwoven dynamic interplay between nine major themes: (1) empathy, (2) childhood’s influence, (3) self-care, (4) a rich inner life, (5) creativity, (6) high sensation-seeking, (7) the sociological perspective, (8) the experience of work, and (9) the integral being.  The significance of this study is that it is the first of its kind to investigate this topic in a systematic, scientific manner.

This paper addresses the lack of a short scale measuring the phenomenon of empathy. For this reason, a full empathy scale, the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire (TEQ) is reduced in a complex three-step process: It includes both quantitative external and internal validation criteria, as well as qualitative theoretical/ semantic reasoning per item.
Using data from Germany and Canada, different measurement model alternatives of the short scale are tested in a Multigroup Confirmative Factor Analysis, in order to identify the most con-vincing theoretical explanation for an optimized item compilation.
From this study, a remarkably short questionnaire of four items, measuring Affective Empathy effectively and efficiently, is successfully constructed for the first time. I describe the latent vari-able that the short scale measures as Emotional Empathy (EE): the emotional ability and motiva-tion to experience feelings caused by another person, which might lead to the motivation to help.
The study successfully proves measurement invariance of the EE short scale across samples from Canada and Germany, as well as across genders. Apart from loadings, intercepts are also inva-riant across samples/groups, allowing meaningful empathy level (latent mean) comparisons be-tween groups. Also, EE is negatively associated with right-wing authoritarianism and social do-minance orientation.
Thus, this study distinguishes itself from previous empathy investigations by its intercultural approach, and also takes into account Emotional Empathy‟s associations with other important constructs of political psychology. This is an important step to enable further research, for exam-ple empathy level comparisons between different cultures and sub-groups, and investigations of empathy in relation to constructs connected to social and political attitudes.

One of the particularly challenging aspects of children's literature lies in its ethics. The intended audience of children's literature is often perceived to be morally malleable, and particularly vulnerable to narrative strategies. This why it is of high importance to consider the moral contents which children's narratives attempt to communicate to the implied child reader and what narrative strategies are used to communicate them. In this paper I employ a classic narratological approach to analyse the many different ways through which children's literature both constructs and communicates ethics to its young readership, both on the separate story/discourse levels and in an underlying, philosophical sense. Robert Westall's The Machine Gunners serves as the example text analysis for this purpose, as the heightened stakes and emotions of war stories such as this one also increase the importance placed on moral reasoning, judgements, and consequences. In my analysis I show how certain ethical messages are communicated through different narrative strategies, and how these can either strengthen or contradict one another. This contradiction is potentially particularly confusing for young readers, and the resulting dissociation may undermine the moral framework of the work at large. This is why, at the end of the article, I call for a holistic narratological framework in the analysis of ethics.

Using cognitive narratology, this theoretical thesis examines how the three linked concepts of empathy, ethics and justice are created and communicated in children’s war literature. Due to the divisive nature of war literature, the basis of this thesis lies on the in- and outgroup theory of empathy, according to which the extend of our empathy is strongly tied to who we identify as “like us” (ingroup) or “unlike us” (outgroup). The limits of our empathy have a direct influence on both our moral frameworks and our ability to perceive the ethical implications of textual actions and characterisation; if we are not empathically engaged, the consequences of a character’s motivations and actions are irrelevant to us. In complex situations like those in war stories there is another layer of moral importance; justice. The reason for going to war, how it is conducted, and how it is resolved are so specific that they have their own justice philosophy. Children cannot be assumed to be aware of this, or to have the power to influence it. Yet it plays a significant part in children’s war literature. This thesis argues that in children’s war literature empathy, ethics, and justice build on each other in a bottom-up manner. It then further examines how this is achieved in the genre, and what its potential impact on the reader may be.
The thesis examines this by analysing the construction and communication of each concept separately in a bottom-up approach, starting with empathy and ending with justice. These sections are divided up into two chapters dedicated to the narrative techniques most relevant to the concept analysed, in a top-down approach, starting with narrators and ending with scripts. A different novel is analysed for each technique, both to demonstrate the argument using the most appropriate example, and to showcase the patterns within the genre. The thesis concludes that through these narrative techniques a complex web of empathy, ethics, and justice is constructed, in which each technique plays a direct role in the concept communicated to the reader. Because young readers are still developing cognitively, as well as building their life experience and reading skills, children’s war literature can provide a strongly influential training ground for them to learn and grow as empathic and moral people.

The swift progress in the study field of human-computer interaction (HCI) causes to increase in the interest in systems for Speech emotion recognition (SER). The speech Emotion Recognition System is the system that can identify the emotional states of human beings from their voice. There are well works in Speech Emotion Recognition for different language but few researches have implemented for Arabic SER systems and that because of the shortage of available Arabic speech emotion databases. The most commonly considered languages for SER is English and other European and Asian languages. Several machine learning-based classifiers that have been used by researchers to distinguish emotional classes: SVMs, RFs, and the KNN algorithm, hidden Markov models (HMMs), MLPs and deep learning. In this paper we propose ASERS-LSTM model for Arabic Speech Emotion Recognition based on LSTM model. We extracted five features from the speech: Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) features, chromagram, Melscaled spectrogram, spectral contrast and tonal centroid features (tonnetz). We evaluated our model using Arabic speech dataset named Basic Arabic Expressive Speech corpus (BAES-DB). In addition of that we also construct a DNN for classify the Emotion and compare the accuracy between LSTM and DNN model. For DNN the accuracy is 93.34% and for LSTM is 96.81%.

Why compassion matters? What is compassion and how does it affect our design work and every-day life? Based on scientific evidence (psychology, neuroscience…) from the last ten years, compassion is a potential driving force behind the transformation of the mind and the way we perceive the world.
This idea influences the way we operate in our personal lives and in a work place.
This narrative thesis essay guides the reader through 7 chapters of written work, where one will get a holistic overall view on the topic.

The author is describing an inter-subjective path of discovering compassion in private life and its potential of cultivating and studying compassion in the field of design, where visual communication is used as a tool. The path of topic exploration lasted over 4 years and more than 20 workshops and lectures were conducted in different parts of the world to gain a better insight of how to study compassion.

The purpose of the thesis Why Compassion (in Design) Matters was to map compassion in the landscape of emotions, showcase the example of workshops, exercises and methods used to visual-ize it and to be able to study it. The work also shares the feedback from the participants of the workshops who shared their insights.
Participatory and experience design methods assisted the author to build the case studies from scratch. Due to almost non-existent research work engaging compassion in the field of design, all case studies were developed solely for this project. The methods were also engaging the partici-pants who got immediate hands-on experience and understanding of the topic.
The main findings showcase examples of how visual communication can be a tool in helping to study cognitive processes, visualize intangible concepts and help create new paths to work cross disciplines to study emotions, in our case compassion.

The flow of the written text is easy to follow and uses maps, visualizations and images which can help the reader to grasp the topic, along with examples from the workshops and other projects conducted during the thesis research phase.

The written work serves as the base for further research that could be conducted in depth by trans-disciplinary teams connecting visual communication and many other science fields (psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, …).

This article takes its inspiration from Wickramasekera II’s empathic involvement theory of hypnosis. That model illuminates the mutual territory of hypnosis and empathy—common to much interaction between hypnotist and subject, and to the internal process of subjects as they enact suggestions of the hypnotist. However, the present article suggests that the overlap is not as ubiquitous as the empathic involvement theory asserts. Other aspects of hypnosis involve disengagement from real persons in the environment and dissociating from other ego states of the self. Amnesia and certain uses of focused attention in the hypnotic context run counter to empathy. The fantasizer type of high hypnotizables experiences hypnosis more empathically than do the equally hypnotizable dissociater type. This article also explores the relationship of hypnosis and empathy to other related states, including meditation, dreaming, and psychedelic drugs. The conclusion is that empathy is an important component of many hypnotic phenomena, but that the relationship is as partial and complex as the manner in which other traits, such as imagery ability and dissociation, map onto hypnosis.

Illustrando alcune regolarità caratteristiche del modo in cui Chrétien descrive gli stati affettivi dei suoi personaggi, si evidenziano sovrapposizioni e caratterizzazioni speci che, cioè i fattori differenziali che determinano la dimensione identitaria dei singoli, con riferimento a fattori di genere, età, posizione sociale. La valutazione complessiva dei dati consente di osservare la regolarizzazione dello spettro affettivo dei personaggi sui parametri di un sistema a coda lunga. Inoltre, l’altissimo livello di interconnessione che risulta dalla combinazione dei verbi, dei sostantivi e degli aggettivi prova a posteriori che il sistema emergente basato sulla co-occorrenza contiene parole ca- riche di rilievo emotivo. This paper presents comprehensive textual data concerning the description of affective states in four romances written by Chretien de Troyes (Erec et Enide, Cligès, Chevalier de la Charrette and Chevalier au Lion. These data emerge from a theoretical approach which assumes co-occurrence of words as an indicator of semantic proximity and/or interdependency. The data processing is based on Wittgenstein’s idea of “family similarities and relies on tools which reflects basic assumptions of the Graph Theory. Lexical data concerning the description of affective states are associated to the specific characters targeted by the described emotions. This approach based on distribution allows for a subsequent comparison between the characters. Differences and similarities, specific characterizations and overlapping areas are highlighted and explained in detail. Special consideration is given to the differential factors that determine individual identity, with reference to such factors as gender, age, social position. A close examination of the collected data shows that the emotional system of all leading characters, and some of the supporting characters as well, are drawn along long-tail curves and show a consistent interconnection between all the affective states. In retrospect,  tight interconnection of verbs, nouns and adjectives which describe the affective states of each and all leading characters shall constitute proof that the emerging system based on the co-occurrence contains words which actually refer to affective modulations. Furthermore, an integrate affective system must be the prerogative of consistent characters and reflects an idea of realism which is based on the the adoption of different affective angles and aims to describe the emotional truth of a story.

This chapter focuses on an emergent topic in contemporary architecture theory and practice, the connection between architecture and neuroscience, a field with potential to help understanding the biological and sensory effects of the built environment on human beings. This relationship mirrors a larger context, where architecture, in order to cope with increasingly complex issues approaches other areas of knowledge, such as biology and physiology. Neuroscience is particularly relevant in this scenario considering that there have been many more discoveries in the past 25 years than ever before, such as the genetic sequence of the DNA in the human brain, completed only in 2003. Different than behavior sciences in 1960s, neuroscience offers more precise tools to measure the impact of spatial experiences upon man. Neural images and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), for instance, have enabled the visualization of the inside of the brain when it engages a spatial experience, and have been used in the past 10 years in multidisciplinary studies by several research and educational institutions, a knowledge that starts to be translated to the Human Sciences. Tracking the origns of the interface in question, some if its precedents from the 19th century until the mid-1980s will be revisited in order to establish a relationship with contemporary neuroscientific notions applied to architecture, including: Initiatives related to the empathy theory in the 19th century and its continuity in the Gestalt, as well as more sporadic efforts throughout the following century, mainly the phenomenological and multisensory experience on which several current studies focus on.

Since its introduction into English in 1909, as a translation of the German concept Einfühlung (feeling into), “empathy” has had a convoluted relationship to the concept of sympathy. This essay sorts some of this complicated conceptual history, with a focus on the primary subjects of their earliest overlap: late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century phenomenology and psychology. Out of this analysis emerges a surprising discovery. Within turn-of-the-century phenomenological conceptions of Einfühlung and empathy, on the one hand, and early American social psychological conceptions of sympathy, on the other, is a common concern to connect both concepts (respectively) to a claim about the recognition of other persons. Specifically, there is an attempt to use these concepts to explain our ability to experience other persons as just that—as “other.” Accordingly, the philosophical import and conceptual ramifications of this discovery are explored.

In this paper I reconstruct the basic structures of Max Scheler’s social philosophy, focusing on the question of which different forms of human togetherness (feeling or acting together, etc.) are possible. My specific aim is to connect the theory of different forms of human interaction, which Scheler developed in The Nature of Sympathy (infection/unification, sensing, and fellow feeling), with his theory of social forms (mass, community, society, collective person) in Formalism in Ethics and Non-Formal Ethics of Values. I show that Scheler recognizes two different forms of collective intentionality: a primitive form of feeling-the-same that is brought about by “infection” or “unification”, and a form that is characterized by a genuinely experienced community: a “feeling-with-one-another” (Miteinanderfühlen).
