This report describes the reliability and validity of a French version of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy – General (FACT-G) with a French sample of 493 cancer patients. The FACT-G consists of 27 items and four subscales: Physical (PWB), Functional (FWB), Social/Family (SFWB) and Emotional well-being (EWB). The study sample includes 64% with localized disease, 26% with metastases, 11% in remission, and 71% receiving radiation/chemotherapy. Internal consistency Cronbach alphas of the global FACT-G scale (0.90) and subscales (>0.75) are satisfactory (n =126). Test-retest reproducibility is satisfactory for all subscales and the global scale (n =87 to 93, r=0.74 to 0.90). ANOVA models show that PWB differentiated between the three disease stages; the global FACT-G and FWB discriminated between patients with metastases and others with localized disease or in remission; EWB only discriminated between metastases and localized disease; while SFWB did not discriminate between groups at different stages of cancer. Only the PWB subscale discriminated between patients with no history from those receiving chemotherapy (p ≤ 0.05). None of the scales discriminated between groups based on radiotherapy. These results may be useful in the design and interpretation of clinical trials involving French patients when the FACT-G is the outcome measure.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties and factor structure of the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) in a community population. The Swedish version of the BPI-01 was administered by interviewing care staff of all adults (n = 915) with administratively defined intellectual disabilities (IDs) living in Örebro County, Sweden. Sixty-two percent of the participants had at least one behavior problem. Altogether, 30.9% showed self-injurious behavior, 41.3% stereotyped behavior, and 34.8% aggressive/destructive behavior. All but the self-injurious behavior scale reached acceptable levels of internal consistency. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the unidimensionality of the subscales as well as the proposed three factor structure of the original BPI-01. The present study demonstrates that the three subscales are highly similar constructs across different language and cultural settings, and that the BPI-01 is applicable in research on populations with varying mental functioning, diagnoses, ages, and living arrangements.

The Perinatal Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Questionnaire (PPQ) was designed to measure post-traumatic symptoms related to childbirth and symptoms during postnatal period. The purpose of this study was to develop a translated Korean version of the PPQ and to evaluate reliability and validity of the Korean PPQ. Participants were 196 mothers at one to 18 months after giving childbirth and data were collected through e-mails. The PPQ was translated into Korean using translation guideline from World Health Organization. For this study Cronbach's alpha and split-half reliability were used to evaluate the reliability of the PPQ. This report presents a French translation and validation of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) in a population of women exposed to a natural disaster during or preceding pregnancy. A total of 223 francophone women who were either pregnant at the time of the 1998 ice storm or who became pregnant shortly thereafter completed the IES-R and other questionnaires 6 months after the disaster. The French IES-R has good internal consistency, with alpha coefficients ranging from 0.81 to 0.93 for its 3 subscales and total score. The test-retest reliability of the scale, although examined with another sample, proved to be satisfactory, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.71 to 0.76 for its 3 subscales and total score. Its convergent validity with perceived life threat and general psychiatric symptoms was judged to be marginally acceptable. Several studies have shown that growth hormone deficiency in adults leads to poor well-being and other clinical consequences, and that these improve when the hormone is replaced. However, the studies employed generic measures of health status that miss important aspects of the patients' experience and that have inadequate reliability and responsiveness. This paper describes the European development and testing of the Quality of Life-Assessment of Growth Hormone Deficiency in Adults (QoL-AGHDA), a condition-specific quality of life measure for use in clinical trials and for the routine monitoring of patients. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality of life (EORTC QL) questionnaires are used in international trials and therefore standardised translation procedures are required. This report summarises the EORTC translation procedure, recent accomplishments and challenges. Translations follow a forward-backward procedure, independently carried out by two native-speakers of the target language. Discrepancies are arbitrated by a third consultant, and solutions are reached by consensus. Translated questionnaires undergo a pilot-testing. Suggestions are incorporated into the final questionnaire. Requests for translations originate from the module developers, physicians or pharmaceutical industry, and most translations are performed by professional translators. The translation procedure is managed and supervised by a Translation Coordinator within the EORTC QL Unit in Brussels. To date, the EORTC QLQ-C30 has been translated and validated into more than 60 languages, with further translations in progress. Translations include all major Western, and many African and Asian languages. The following translation problems were encountered: lack of expressions for specific symptoms in various languages, the use of old-fashioned language, recent spelling reforms in several European countries and different priorities of social issues between Western and Eastern cultures. The EORTC measurement system is now registered for use in over 9000 clinical trials worldwide. The EORTC provides strong infrastructure and quality control to produce robust translated questionnaires. Nevertheless, translation problems have been identified. The key to improvements may lie in the particular features and strengths of the group, consisting of researchers from 21 countries representing 25 languages and include the development of simple source versions, the use of advanced computerised tools, rigorous pilot-testing, certification procedures and insights from a unique cross-cultural database of nearly 40,000 questionnaire responses.

Patient protection requires the provision of informed consent for participation in medical research. The MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool for Clinical Research (MacCAT-CR) is frequently used for screening the capacity of research subjects to consent to participate in research. To evaluate the utility of the Hebrew translation of the MacCAT-CR for assessing the capacity of patients with chronic schizophrenia to provide informed consent to participate in clinical trials. We evaluated the translated MacCAT-CR by comparingthe capacity of patients with chronic schizophrenia to provide informed consent to participate in clinical trials. This article reports on the Canadian-French translation of the Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale (PIADS), a 26-item questionnaire that measures the quality of life (QoL) impacts of using assistive technologies from the person with disability's point of view. Following standard procedures, the study included forward and backward translations, committee reviewing, pre-testing with bilingual lay people, and psychometric evaluation of the translated questionnaire with subjects with mobility impairment (n = 83) and visual impairment (n = 37). The use of translators translating in their mother tongue and the participation of one author of the questionnaire contributed to the quality of the translation. We found that words that had equivalence in English and French did not necessarily cover the same areas of meaning. OBJECTIVE: To translate the Perceived Stress Scale into Brazilian Portuguese, and to assess its validity for measuring perceived stress of Brazilian elderly. METHODS: The scale was translated and tested in its full version including 14 questions and in a shortened version including ten questions. The whole translation process consisted of translation, back-translation and committee review. The translated version was applied, by means of interview, to 76 elders aged on average 70.04 years (SD=6.34; range: 60–84). The internal consistency was verified by means of the Cronbach's alpha coefficient and the construct validity was analyzed by means of factorial exploratory analysis with varimax rotation. Full and shortened score means were analyzed comparing the perceived stress in terms of self-assessment of health, perceived socioeconomic condition, marital status, and living conditions, among others. RESULTS: As for reliability, the full version has showed similar internal consistency (r=0.82) compared to the shortened one (r=0.83). The factorial analysis found two factors for the full and one factor for the shortened scale. Question 12 showed the lowest factorial loads. When analyzing PSS likelihood of differentiating the perceived stress in terms of the study variables, it was found the full scale had greater differences in perceived stress than the shortened scale. CONCLUSIONS: The Perceived Stress Scale proved to be a clear and reliable tool to measure the perceived stress of Brazilian elderly, showing suitable psychometric performance.

The efficient and reliable assessment of general community health requires the development of comprehensive and parsimonious measures of proven validity. The Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) has been demonstrated to be a reliable indicator of common expressions of discomfort and stress in the general population. The present paper describes its linguistic adaptation into French, the derivation of item weights by Thurstone's method of paired comparisons and the comparison of item weights across various sociodemographic groups. There is more similarity than variation on the valuation of the state of health explored by the NHP between the French and the British population as little inter-cultural or inter-linguistic variations were found. The differences in judgement of severity elicited across sociodemographic groups in the French sample cast some doubts on the relevance of general weights for use in population surveys.

OBJETIVO: Traduzir, adaptar culturalmente e validar a versão em português do Questionário de Claudicação de Edimburgo, específico para avaliar a presença de claudicação intermitente. MÉTODOS: A versão em português do Questionário de Claudicação de Edimburgo foi desenvolvida, após autorização da Universidade de Edimburgo, e aplicada em 217 indivíduos residentes no município de São Paulo, com queixas de dor nas pernas, convidados pelos meios de comunicação de massa a participar da I Campanha de Combate à Doença Arterial Obstrutiva Periférica (DAOP). Na primeira etapa, eles responderam ao Questionário de Claudicação de Edimburgo e a um questionário sobre fatores de risco e antecedentes cardiovasculares. Na segunda etapa, realizaram medidas antropométricas e do índice tornozelo-braquial (ITB) de repouso com Doppler vascular e, nos casos duvidosos, teste de esforço vascular em esteira (TEV). A presença de DAOP foi definida por ITB < 0,90 e/ou por TEV positivo e/ou por DAOP documentada. A análise estatística, que incluiu avaliação de desempenho e comparações das proporções e médias, foi realizada utilizando-se o programa SAS versão 8.2. RESULTADOS: A média de idade dos participantes foi de 60 ± 11,5 anos, com predomínio do sexo feminino (53,4%). A análise de desempenho da versão em língua portuguesa mostrou sensibilidade de 85%, especificidade de 93%, valor preditivo positivo de 80%, valor preditivo negativo de 95% e acurácia de 91%. Não houve diferença no desempenho entre idosos (> 65 anos) e não-idosos. CONCLUSÃO: A versão em português do Questionário de Claudicação de Edimburgo manteve níveis adequados de sensibilidade e especificidade, podendo ser recomendado para o rastreamento de DAOP na prática clínica e em estudos epidemiológicos realizados no Brasil.
