Victor Papanek

Im Zuge der Debatten um ökonomische wie soziale Nachhaltigkeit und angesichts der Tatsache, dass Soziologie und Kulturwissenschaft die Dinge vermehrt hinsichtlich ihrer Rolle in gesellschaftlichen Prozessen reflektieren, sind soziale Dimensionen des Designs in den letzten Jahren besonders virulent geworden. Gegenwärtig entsteht verstärkt eine Designkultur, die ihre Zeitgemäßheit auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise durch soziale Relevanz herauszustellen versucht und im Zuge dessen auch vermehrt mit der Reflexion der eigenen Praxis beschäftigt ist. Das Design wird nicht nur deshalb zunehmend politisiert, weil globale soziale Missstände – wie Chancen- und Verteilungsungerechtigkeit oder Flucht und Migration – medial vermittelt besonders sichtbar sind, sondern auch weil sich das Verständnis sozialer Prozesse geändert hat. Der Beitrag zeichnet diese Änderung des Verständnisses von 'Social Design' anhand einer ethischen, immateriellen und interaktiven Lesart nach und entwickelt ein einleitendes Verständnis der zwischenmenschlichen Dimensionen von Design.

Welchen Einfluss hat die Gestaltung des gegenständlichen Umfeldes auf zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen und wie werden diese gewollt oder ungewollt mit den Dingen mitgestaltet? Auf welche Weise werden durch Design und Architektur soziale Kompetenzen wie zwischenmenschliches Erkennen, Handeln und Erleben ermöglicht oder verunmöglicht?
Autor*innen verschiedener Disziplinen gehen diesen Fragen nach und eröffnen hierbei eine dingorientierte Perspektive auf das Themenfeld des Social Design, die sowohl geeignet ist, eine Brücke zwischen Theorie und Praxis zu bilden, als auch einschlägiges Studienmaterial für die sozialen Dimensionen der Gestaltung zu versammeln.

In March 2005, I presented a paper at the European Academy of Design conference in Bremen,
Germany.  It introduced the concept of the ‘natural design movement’ and discussed the
relationship between eco-literacy, ethics, and aesthetics within the context of natural design. 
The paper proposed:  “Eco-literacy – a detailed understanding of nature as a complex
interacting, creative process in which humanity participates – results in a shift in perception
towards an ecological ethics and aesthetics of participation that considers cultural, social and
ecological, as well as economic value” (Wahl, 2005b, p.1).  Such an approach tries to optimise
human patterns of participation in natural process in such a way that it contributes to the health
and sustainability of the overall system.

The Natural Design Movement shares an ecological worldview.  The movement unites diverse disciplines
ranging from ecological design, industrial and urban ecology, sustainable architecture and bioregional
planning to ecological economics, eco-literate education and green politics.  Furthermore it considers the
philosophical, sociological and psychological implications of the ecological worldview.  Design in the 21st
century will be grounded in eco-literacy and aspire toward community-based designs that are adapted to the
specific conditions of a particular place and culture (Wahl, 2005b, p.1).

The Natural Design Movement encompasses such diverse fields as ecological product-, process-
and institutional design, sustainable architecture, community-, urban- and bioregional planning,
industrial ecology, and ecological engineering, but also political systems of governance,
ecological economics, education for sustainability, renewable resource based technologies and
energy production, as well as aspects of bionics, eco-technology, and green chemistry.  All of
which will be discussed in more detail in chapters four and five.  As I have already alluded to in
chapter two, the natural design movement is united through a salutogenic intentionality behind
design on all scales of the fundamentally interconnected whole in which we participate.

The perception, preservation and restoration of the condition of systemic health, or dynamic stability, are
the underlying strategies of all sustainable designs.  Salutogenesis, or health generation at the scale of local
and global ecosystems and social systems has to become the priority of design in the 21st Century if we
want to create a sustainable global civilization through diverse, locally adapted cultures of co-operation
(Wahl, 2005b, pp.15-16).

This chapter suggests that such a design response to the current crisis of unsustainability is
already emerging, represented by a diverse, international movement which is as yet not fully
integrated and conscious of its own existence.  This thesis hopes to facilitate the process of
networking that is necessary to unite this trans-disciplinary, scale-linking movement by
providing a generalised map of its various contributories.
This chapter begins with a brief history of ecologically conscious design and introduces
some of the key visionaries who have prepared the ground for its emergence.  It starts with an
acknowledgement of the important influence of traditional and indigenous knowledge on
appropriate design; and highlights the influence Sir Patrick Geddes, Lewis Mumford,
Buckminster Fuller, Ian McHarg and Victor Papanek on the natural design movement.
Subchapter two discusses the concept of natural design within the context of the shift in
perception facilitated by an ecological worldview.  It suggests that a participatory understanding
of humanity’s involvement in natural process dissolves the apparent paradox of natural design
which itself is simply the result of employing an epistemology of Cartesian dualism.
Subchapter three explores the relationship between ecological literacy, an expanded
horizon of empathy and self-identification, and ethical and aesthetic perception and judgement. 
It offers a more detailed exploration of how the emerging natural design movement also
engenders a fundamental reconsideration of our understanding of ethics and aesthetics.
Subchapter four describes how the various members of the natural design movement
have approached nature as a source of knowledge, wisdom and insight that deeply informs their
design process.  It discusses and exemplifies a new way of learning from nature.
And finally, subchapter five continues with the theme of responsible co-design of
humanity’s active participation in natural processes, by exploring the notion of co-design of
complex systems, which serves as a general introduction to the scales of sustainable design and
the complex scale-linking issues that are explored in much more detail in chapters four and five.

Автор по-казывает, что Стив Джобс в своих дизайнерских решениях придерживается ряда ценностей, таких как призрение к социальному статусу и украшательству. Дизайнер также наделяет красоту чертами истины, рассматривает ее не как предмет спора, а как истину, которую надлежит открыть. Он пропа-гандирует эти ценности среди своей целевой аудитории и оказывает влияние на людей. Стив Джобс выносит на первое место безупречный вкус и эстетику и показывает пренебрежение к «ложным» ценностям, таким как демонстрация статуса, продукты luxury сегмента, но в тоже время брезгливость по отношению к дешевым и некачественным товарам, рассчитанным на массовую аудиторию. Одной из особенностей Стива Джобса является бескомпромиссность, способность принимать решения и нести за них ответственность. В статье показано, что этические ценности сыграли важную роль в популярности продуктов компании Apple, разработкой которых руководил Стив Джобс. В статье также приводятся законы лаконичного дизайна, разработанные американским философом и дизайне-ром Джоном Маида под влиянием продуктов Apple. При анализе труда Маида " The laws of simplicity " видно, что данные законы во многом опираются на этические ценности. Верность многих покупателей Apple этой марке настолько впечатляет, что «фанаты Apple» всерьез сравниваются исследователями с верующими [1]. Вряд ли компания доби-лась бы подобного эффекта без своего CEO — Стива Джобса. Именно он пред-ложил новаторские дизайнерские решения, благодаря которым продукты компа-нии приобрели популярность и которые впоследствии копировали другие произ-водители смартфонов и планшетов. Это большой экран, занимающий почти всю площадь смартфона, единственная кнопка и автоматическое выключение, всеми известная оперативная система и иконки приложений в виде квадратов с закруг-ленными углами, а также не менее полюбившиеся фанатам белые корпуса гад-жетов. Когда в 2011 г. Стив Джобс скончался после долгой болезни, тысячи по-клонников приносили цветы к магазинам Apple по всему миру. Несмотря на то, что сам Стив Джобс был харизматичной личностью, успех его дизайнерских решений обусловлен не только личностными качествами CEO компании Apple, но и принципами дизайна, лежащими в основе продукции Apple начала XXI в. Целью данной статьи является рассмотрение ценностей дизайна, которыми руководствовался Стив Джобс при создании продукции Apple, особенно iPhone, iPod и iPad. Чтобы выявить эти ценности, следует обратиться к истории дизайна и промышленного дизайна в частности.

Relire Papanek, "re-read Papanek" is a re-discovery of Victor Papanek's major work, 'Design for the Real World', first published in 1971. The article shows the relevance and freshness of some of the insights gained by Papanek in terms of sustainable and socially responsible design 40 years ago.

—The paper analyses ethical values of design concepts of V. Papanek and S. Jobs. Both design concepts represent the concepts that aim to change the human environment inventively and consciously in order to achieve the main aim. The simplicity and the absence of superfluous details are very important characteristics of both design concepts. The basis of consideration for V. Papanek's concept of design was taken from his book ―Design for the Real World‖ and his other works and projects in which he had contributed. In order to reconstruct S. Jobs' understanding of design we use the interviews, his speeches, and his presentations. The values of design are self-sacrifice, the rebellion against injustice (V. Papanek) and genuine knowledge – truth that cannot be understood by everyone (S. Jobs).

This paper argues that the writings of cultural-theorist Jean Baudrillard from the late 1960s and early 1970s provided an important contribution to twentieth-century Design Theory. Baudrillard’s theory of consumer society was informed by a critical engagement with themes that preoccupied twentieth-century design practice and theory. Rejecting the designer’s testimony as evidence, Baudrillard insisted that design be understood within the broader sociological context of consumer society. Towards the close of the 1960s, as the universalist project of Functionalism was attacked by various factions, Baudrillard uniquely argued that Functionalism had not simply failed to establish a singular mode of design in opposition to the multiplicity of fashion; rather Functionalism was fashion’s progenitor and perfect exemplar.

Der Beitrag thematisiert anhand gegenwärtiger und historischer Designdiskurse soziale Denkweisen der Gestaltung. Diese werden in drei Dimensionen systematisiert, die das zwischenmenschliche Gestalten auszeichnen: der Soziabilität des Gestaltens, der Sozialität des Gestalteten und der Soziabilität des Gebrauchens. Es wird gezeigt, dass die gegenwärtigen Bestrebungen im Nachdenken über soziales Design insbesondere um eine angemessene Integration des Autonomiegedankens bemüht sind, und zwar sowohl auf der Seite des Gestaltens wie auf der Seite des Gebrauchens. Zwischenmenschliches Design erweist sich so als eine Art Metadesign, als der Versuch, die dinglichen Voraussetzungen für das autonome zwischenmenschliche Gestalten der Gebrauchenden zu gestalten.

participatory value of the program / Con crescente frequenza e pregnanza, il design dell’arredamento in cartone è portatore di importanti significati connessi alla sostenibilità dei processi produttivi: disegnare e costruire mobili o oggetti con i materiali a base di cellulosa significa attivare filiere brevi e circolari, a basso impatto e a costi competitivi, finalizzate all’uso consapevole e al riciclo, dove il valore dell’autorialità del progetto non soverchia la valenza funzionale e partecipativa del programma.

A few thought about Product Design and Sustainability.
Essay written during my exchange at University for the Creative Arts - UCA, Farnham (2019).


“For too many and for too long, design has been first and foremost associated with a styling exercise led by creative tensions between aesthetic and function. Consumerist propagation and exaggerated material cultures have quickly ostracized the teachings of designer-ecologists” such as Victor Papanek, but “with sustainability and social welfare at its core, design has the power to change the world as we know it” (Franklin & Till, 2018:7). This paper first gives a brief overview of the history of sustainability in general and within the field of design; then analyses the different approaches and guidelines industrial designers use nowadays, including Life Cycle Analysis and Functional Unit, and tries to demonstrate their intrinsic inconclusiveness with the help of the insights written in the book ‘Cradle to Cradle’ and confrontation between products. The third part introduces us to a different and more radical way of approaching design and shows its potential in terms of diffusion and philosophy.

Franciszek Duszeńko nie był chyba nigdy w swoich wewnętrznych przekonaniach częścią systemu patriarchalnego, mając dystans do „zabawy we władzę”. Od najmłodszych lat również obserwował nastroje społeczne danych miejsc, narodów, nacji, większości
i mniejszości społecznych, wskazywał na prawdopodobne zarzewia konfliktów
i wykształcanie dominacji, wrogości wreszcie przemocy. Również z perspektywy bycia
w środku, starał się nabierać potrzebnego dystansu.

Charakteryzowała go zarazem skłonność do cynicznych dekonstruowań wszystkiego, co monolityczne, nazbyt pewne siebie, również do własnych sądów, czy formotwórczych idei powojennego modernizmu, w którym pokoleniowo uczestniczył. Po dyplomie w 1952 roku miał styczność z założeniami rozwijanej przez Oskara Hansena (1922-2005) „teorii formy otwartej”, z dokonaniami Jerzego Sołtana (1913-2005), z twórczością i działalnością pedagogiczną Jerzego Jarnuszkiewicza (1919-2005), jednak starał się zachowywać własne intuicje, niechętnie przystawał  do silnych prądów zewnętrznych, kulturowych, społecznych czy historycznych, również wewnątrz konstelacji ludzkiej w której żył. Bliska mu była postawa nasłuchująca, analityczna i jakby programowa antyrewolucyjność, która jak się okazało w jego pracowniach sprzyjała dojrzewaniu przemian, które i tak nadchodziły
i których też nie powstrzymywał.  Jego postawa dążenia do demokratyzacji przestrzeni społecznej, do rozbrajania nabrzmiałych napięć, zarazem przypominania o równym prawie do wolności indywidualnej wypowiedzi (również artystycznej), wydaje się mieć reperkusje
w filozofii twórczości jego uczniów, w tym Anny Baumgart. W 2014 artystka ta podkreślała: „Feminizm jest dla mnie jak powietrze, jest zupełnie transparentne. Pytanie czy jestem feministką jest dla mnie pytaniem o to czy jestem za równością i wolnością dla wszystkich. Jest to tak uwewnętrzniona wartość, że aż trudno ją opisywać, jako coś zewnętrznego. Cała moja praca z kliszami kultury odbywa się po to by dokonać subwersji, zastanowić się jak wygląda transgresja, przekroczenie i czy to jest prawdziwe” .

Franciszek Duszeńko interesował się ewolucjami w twórczości swoich podopiecznych, otrzymywał od nich również morfemy swoich dokonań, które eksponował
w mieszkaniu na ulicy Mariackiej, wśród nich prace wybitnych artystów: Ludmiły Ostrogórskiej, Tomasza Misztala, Janiny Rudnickiej, Zdzisława Pidka, Marii Talagi-Korpalskiej, Krystyny Andrzejewskiej-Marek, Katarzyny Jóźwiak-Moskal, Magdaleny Schmidt-Góry,  Roberta Kaji, Marka Targońskiego, Edwarda Cichonia i innych.  Ale profesor Duszeńko otaczał się  również materiałami laboratoryjnymi, na przykład w pracowni,
w osobistej biblioteczce miał liczne numery wielkoformatowego kwartalnika nowej sztuki EXIT, (ukazującego się od roku 1990). Obok leżał niebieskawy architektoniczny obiekt
z wieloelementowego „Habitatu” Katarzyny Józefowicz i bladoróżowa kostka pokryta drukowanymi literami Jadwigi Sawickiej.  Między innymi zachował katalogi offowych zdarzeń w Galerii EL w Elblągu: „Zjazdu Marzycieli” (1971) oraz sympozjum „Notatnik Robotnika Sztuki – Kino Labratorium” (1973). Przypominane dziś Sympozja Elbląskie  były zainicjowane przez niezależnych twórców oraz Gerharda Blum-Kwiatkowskiego wybitnego artysty, kuratora pięciu edycji Biennale Form Przestrzennych,  który w 1974 w wyniku różnego rodzaju problemów wyjechał do Niemiec. Mimo doświadczenia urzędniczej nieprzychylności na terenie Polski Blum-Kwatkowski nie zaprzestał fascynować się polską sztuką współczesną, jak i konkretnymi artystami, których twórczość prezentuje
i upowszechnia w założonym przez siebie Museum Moderne Kunst, w zaadoptowanej na ten cel starej gazowni w Hünfeld. Filozofia pogodzenia się ze stratą i udane próby dalszego budowania "na ranach", była bliska biografii Franciszka Duszeńki, w którego złożoną osobowość wpisywała się „filozofia pęknięć” i „sztuka pęknięć” (odnosząc się do określenia Jerzego Ludwińskiego).  Do ostatniej chwili pracował nad koncepcją form, obserwował uważnie konteksty przestrzenne bądź międzyludzkie i był też otwarty na dalsze przemiany, nawet w czasie finalnej realizacji. Kierowało nim pragnienie docierania do głębszych powodów istnienia, i tworzenia niż wymierne korzyści, wynikające z sukcesów zawodowych, czy szerokiej aprobaty społecznej.

Postrzegam postawę i twórczość Franciszka Duszeńki tworząc metaforę
„linii papilarnych rzeźby”, dotykającej sfery haptycznej w tym dokonujących się w jego życiu nieustannych tarć  między wewnętrznym powołaniem do sztuki i zranieniem psychiczno- fizycznym, którego doświadczył od zewnętrznego świata w bardzo wczesnym wieku, co jak wspomina prof. Ludmiła Ostrogórska ukształtowało jego osobowość, naznaczyło życiowe kroki ostrożnością, czujnością ale i odwagą". DGT

Over the past couple of years, I’ve had the opportunity to lead hundreds of people around the world in “design swarms” that have crafted innovative responses to urgent social challenges. To take on wicked problems such as homelessness, climate change and the refugee crisis and come up with creative solutions, I’ve leaned on the guidance of many teachers I’ve had. A few individuals stand out who continue to influence and inspire me every day: Victor Papanek, Buckminster Fuller, Achille Castiglioni, Charles Eames and Ray Eames
